Re:Well...
DockbarX isn't a perfect drop-in replacement, but it's actually pretty decent, even adding live previews via Compiz. Different themes are available, of course, but isn't that pretty much always the case where desktop Linux is concerned? The tray/notification area and clock are obviously quite different still, but one step at a time.

Re:And So Offered Another Inaccuracy
Indeed, if you're familiar with Docking Bay 327, it is inside a large maitenance trench where the structural weaknesses should have created a horizontal ring exploding outward. Instead the movie gave us a vertical ring exploding outward.
Veritcal or Horizontal?? Based on what? Too many misconceptions about the use of the word Horizontal.
Based on how they framed it in every goddamn scene and the frame before it blew up?

And So Offered Another InaccuracyFrom the article:
Sadly, upon closer inspection, we see that ILM blew this rare opportunity for scientific realism in the Star Wars universe

I hate most of Star Trek and basically considered Star Wars a religion as a human larva & pupa (see above docking bay reference). Being as how I was hatched after the last (real) Star Wars movie came out, my nipples exploded with joy at the prospect of seeing the originals on the big screen -- special edition or not. I was confused by the Han/Greedo exchange, found not a whole lot of added value in the other aspects but must have been the only person pleased with a more satisfactory Death Star explosion. But a debunking astronomer
Yes, it's Phil "Bad Astronomer" Plait. Look, it's great you get people into astronomy via sci-fi religious flamebait stoking but
... I think you put it best in the last slide of one of your presentations. -

Re:I heard the same about 8.10 and 9.04 and 9.10
What I don't understand is why they don't focus on the gdm login screen. The default looks horrible and they removed the option screen to add your own themes.
They really should replace it with something like this by default but with the current wallpaper they have.

Re:Neat hack, but ultimately useless
That's fair; My Touch Diamond 2 fits neatly under the lip of the recessed clock display (top centre of dashboard) with a charging cable from the in-car USB socket. I can't play music from the phone at the same time, as CoPilot map data is from the card yet the car requires exclusive access to it as removable media. Still, battery lasts a day running satnav so I don't need it plugged in all of the time.
If you want a car mount, try Brodit ProClip - I've not used them, but the folks at xda-developers with them all swear by them. A little expensive, but less than the TomTom unit (£50 for fully adjustable version) -

Re:Our budget deficits are catastrophic, too
And you are... or if you prefer... willfully dishonest as you ignore facts on the ground.
Need I remind you that it was THIS ADMINISTRATION (via Christina Romer) who published this rather well known graph that predicted what the unemployment rate would be with/without the '09 stimulus bill... and even with it... the actual has come out to be WORSE than they had predicted it would be without.
Now... could it be that the economy was so much worse off than they knew... perhaps... but that doesn't exactly paint them in a very competent light, now does it? I mean... if they cannot be trusted to know how bad something is... how can we trust them to be able to fix it? (hint: don't do either!)
The fact is... Keynesian economics have never actually worked as proscribed... in fact, they've even gotten their implementation completely wrong and are driven more by what they want than what actually works... and what's worse is they've instead made things far far worse than they would have been than if they had sat on their hands and done nothing.
Remember... I'm not talking about perceptions here... I'm talking about what then canidate Obama, and later President Obama and his administration said they could/would do. I'm sorry for holding them to what they said.

Fix Sound!
I like how he sort of blew off the sound question.
It has nothing to do with "supported hardware" it has to due to the Cluster Fuck that is Linux Audio.I know OSS is about "choice" but there's just too many choices. And none of them work right. I'd consider myself a high level user and usually read a "How To" then understand the underlying system (such as how uBoot works on my Sheeva Plug), but I haven't in the slightest idea how the fuck linux audio works.
I can install OSSv4. And use those drivers with ALSA. Or use ALSA drivers while playing through Pulse Audio and telling all ALSA applications to go through Pulse Audio. And I don't even want to start to think about 'mapping' in ALSA.
If Canonical/Ubuntu fixes sound, it'll be one of those stories that we tell our grandchildren about.

Re:I'm not quite sold.
Yah but then you don't get any icons for non-steam games, which are the majority of my games. Using vista game explorer editor I can have nice huge boxart for every single one of my games, even my old DOS ones I launch via dosbox (Wizard's Crown, Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator, Romance of the 3 Kingdoms III, etc).
See this for an example, though I have my boxart much larger.

Re:Eye-tracking is a tricky subject
I wouldn't be surprised if this idea were patented already, given that it's obvious.
Given that it’s obvious, it can’t be patented... not that this would stop anyone.
Even so, the concept of the mouse pointer would have to be completely rethought. Anything opaque would be in the way, and anything transparent would gradually fade away... a pulsating glow might work, but there would be a fine line between noticeable and annoying.

I have a question about this.
Suppose an elderly airline passenger is wearing his adult diaper (recently used), will they be pulled out of line and made to display their crap to TSA employees? I mean, wouldn't that look a lot like our nigerian friends special underpants? Is this just another excuse to harass the incontinent?
Will very fat people be asked to lift and display what's under their folds? I've seen people who could hide quite a lot in their sweaty crevices, Why I bet the average
/. reader could be hiding a very dirty bomb on their person for sure that wouldn't be detected by these machines. What would this scanner detect on this woman. There's a lot on her that is (and would be best left) unseen by such a device. This, like every other measure taken, seems only to harass and annoy regular people. These are people representing several government organizations, who when told that someone is planning a terrorist attack by that persons father, and that person pays cash, buys a one way ticket and checks no bags, they can't be troubled to ensure that he doesn't get on a plane. But up untill 2008, made very sure that Nelson Mandella couldn't board a US bound plane? This is just crazy. Makes me want to pull my hair out at the thought of handing these people new tools when the basic tool of common sense has been long abandoned and replaced with seemingly random regulations and rules.
As Frank Zappa said, "America is a nation of laws; Poorly written and randomly enforced"

Is that you, John G.?
Why am I so certain you've read Atlas Shrugged in the last three years.
Don't worry: when you regain the capability for independent thought, you'll realize the world is not black and white, and not everyone who doesn't want to give free reign to manipulative, anti-competitive, privacy-intruding, innovation-stifling, cartelizing corporations (Pt. 2, 3) wants to steal your soul. They may be looking to fix our problems, too, you know.
Example: OLE vs. OpenDoc
The Old Strategy
- Direct competition on tech details
-
Press, pundits LOVE this!
- Conflict!
- Underdog!
-
ISVs are confused, so they do nothing
- "I'll wait to see who wins"
- OpenDoc's FUD worked
-
Complete disaster
- Delayed the widespread adoption of OLE
The New Strategy
-
Allies
- Apple, Novell, IBM
-
Strategy
- Disrupt the alliance
-
Tactics
- Reposition OpenDoc as an OLE dev. tool
- Put OLE in the enterprise
- Pits Apple against IBM & Novell
-
Help Claris & WP support OLE in Win95
- pits part of an ally against itself
(From: How to Get Your Platform Accepted as a Standard - Microsoft Style)
(Don't despair if it's been longer than three years. You can always hope for a lightning strike to work its magic.)

Re:Catholic Church is pretty poor.
The only way the Catholic Church is worth a hundred billion of anything is when you calculate its worth in Lira.
Sorry, but nope. Catholic church is very wealthy... here's a pic of the solid gold alter in Cuzco... the picture does it absolutely no justice
... and there's probably 5 times more gold than in this pic and an equal amount of silver (this pic is not mine; I don't know who this pic belongs to; they don't let you take pics inside the church, so this person committed a bit of sacrilege by taking this)
And I'd say the items contained in this photo are worth a few bucks.
In terms of net worth, they are very clearly rich. -
idea is redundant

Re:poor reasoning
Problem is that it relies on OLD technology to 'work well'.
That's a dumb argument. I still slice bread with knife, a technology which has been around for thousands of years
Pros do it with a multi-bladed automated bread cutting machine, you philistine!

Amsterdam
This is why Amsterdam has public toilets that look like this: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_D4avj_GZuq4/SAsa2yTgvYI/AAAAAAAAB6E/ANS4tx2JuKc/toilet.jpg
Sure, it is not very private, nor can it be considered to be self-cleaning. But they aren't very attractive hideouts for prostitution and drug use either.
Haha! As if Amsterdam had any prostitution or drug use going!

Re:a match made in heaven . . .
Why would anyone want to Pirate the Olympic broadcasts?
You must be new here allow me to explain. First and foremost a vast majority of the money holding populace are simple rubes. The profits to be made from a relatively poor and uneducated populace such as China has is not to be underestimated. This is common in the United States of America, such as Yellow Ribbons once found on the vast majority of the SUV driving public. Themselves unlikely to formulate even a remotely insightful or articulate statement as to the conflict responsible for it's re-adoption. Taking advantage of the rubes can also happen on a much more local level for when the Boise Broncos won the 2007 Fiesta Bowl the local news industry was elated to find it's self in a constant self gratification stroke fest as it replayed the admittedly exciting game over and over. Including a year later. Wal-Mart also jumped into the fray to hawk a commemorative DVD with all associated Bronco's paraphernalia located conveniently nearby. It was given the same status in the store as a new Hannah Montanna release for many months after. Just think if China pulls some big wins, the populace is going to eat it up.

Lego Wall-E
I love the fact that animator Angus MacLane made a WALL-E out of Legos: http://www.brothers-brick.com/2008/06/26/pixar-animator-angus-maclane-builds-best-lego-wall-e-yet-interview/
