If you know about D&D, I recommend you read...
It's super funny (only for those "in the know" I think) http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html

Wrath of the Lich King, starring...
Lord Xykon as the new world boss, who was quoted as saying, "I think I just had an evilgasm!"

using a bunch of scraps of paper with "Orc" written on them in crayon in lieu of the expensive orc miniatures
Obligatory The Order of the Stick link. -
The problem's been around for a long time
Radiation was a big problem even in olden times -- I wouldn't be surprised if lawsuits start popping up about this nowadays as well.

Re:Let :-) Reign Supreme!
I will say that the western smilies are quicker to type, but the asian ones are much more expressive. There really aren't any western smilies anyone can recognize beyond:
:) ;) :( :| and :/ but you can express frustration and resignation much easier with the asian smilies.
I have found myself using the western style with eyebrows added. Even in certain animation, the eyes are completely featureless but the eyebrows are drawn in for expression and not even attached to the face.
>:(
I guess that makes me an Order of the Stick sort of person:

Did anyone else think of these?
Not the sort of noodling I would be hoping for... http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0020.html

Giant In The Park
Having to deal with strange technical rules regarding reality is par for the course at Order of the Stick. There's something here that hits a note with any techie (well, frankly, anyone) if you've ever played D&D.

Re:Penny Arcade no, Megatokyo yes
Penny Arcade is for people who don't get Megatokyo.
I get megatokyo fine. I used to read it until I realized that it was kind of really boring. So it got replaced by order of the stick.
Well as bad as megatokyo gets, at least it will never be as bad as user friendly. I have no idea how I ever enjoyed that travesty.
The weird thing is no matter how the lineup shuffles around, I always settle on three webcomics. -

Larry Gardner and the Angry Half-orc
I would have preferred Larry Gardner and the Angry Half-Orc
-
Potionomics
Well, of course. Here's a great Order of the Stick comic that illustrates the point quite well. =)

Re:Don't buy the Hype
...Africans do no have smaller brains because white people had cave-men sex with Thog.
Maybe with Og or Trog, but Thog thinks girls have cooties. -

"One word my elven friend: volume!" -
I know what they meanI'm guilty of this myself. Sure, by day I wear an button with Elan and Banjo on my ESD lab coat, hang up pictures of my fiance and I dressing up like Pompey and Vaarsuvius (from the same comic) outside my cube, and reading Linux Kernel Device driver books for fun. But by night, when no one is looking, I'm over at sportsdot and playing fantasy football.

Not exactly what you had in mind, but
Have you ever checked out Giant in the Playground? They actually play by post in the forums over there. Besides which, the comic Order of the Stick is the funniest RPG comic I've ever read. It actually makes me want to get back into gaming and learn these newfangled 3.0 rules.

about that... -
Re:Goddman it
For some reason that story puts me in mind of the current issue of The Order of the Stick

Re:Compromise
Actually, I thought it was bacause they were OOTS readers, due to the content of the most recent comic.....

Ah, the lure of being #1, even if you cheat
The article sums itself up by saying that they don't understand why people would cheat and artificially inflate their rating.
Duh! To be at the top!
How many times do you see on gaming forums some clown posting "FIRST!" or "First Page!", like it matters. Just about every Blizzard post on their forums has that stupidity going on, and you even see it happening on non-competition sites like the forums for Order of the Stick webcomic.
It's all about having bragging rights, or as I like to call it, "showing off the size of your e-penis".
It's almost homo-erotic at this point. (Not that there is anything wrong with being gay, btw.) Before the computer game evolution, guys usually tried to have bragging rights in some sport, and a lot of the hot "cheerleader" type chicks dug the guy with the letterman jacket. The guys tended to get buff, be athletic, and do something worthy of praise. (They also tended to be morons, but that's besides the point.) They competed with each other to gain the attention of women, mostly.
Now, we have the same behavior going on, but with computer gamers. They have to be the best, be the coolest, etc. Except, there aren't a lot of chicks out there that will drool all over them. What they get is other guys wishing to be like them, instead of chicks wanting to be with them. There isn't a big call from girls to date the guy with a high Halo2 ranking, but the H.S. quarterback still gets a hot chick more often than not.
I don't know about you, but when I was in H.S. or college, I didn't want the adulation of other guys. I wanted to be noticed by chicks. But hey, that was just me. -
Obligatory...

Wooooo! I'm invisible!!! -
MUD Justice
One of my favourite old MUDs featured a prison affectionally known as "the milk room". It was a prison full of incredibly jubilant spammy songs about milk. It was similar in concept to this tried-and-true method of torture.

Rich Burlew - Order of the Stick
Explorer's Handbook
David Noonan, Prank Brunner, Rich Burlew
Wizards of the Coast
Hey, it's Rich Burlew, kids! Author of one of my favorite webcomics, Order of the Stick. D&D oriented comic with stick figures that are more expressive than most wecomics full figured drawin's. Share and Enjoy. Umm, that's all. -
Re:speaking of which
Yes. He is also the brother of Banjulhu!
-
Another Recomendation- OotS
And here's a link for the more traditional geeks... Order of the Stick (I also read this little sci fi epic among the multitudes of comics out there.)

Greatest Sci-fi webcomic ever:
http://www.schlockmercenary.com/
Seriously, you owe it to yourself to read this. Updates every day, complex plot that still has lots of gags, characters you can really appreciate...there's nothing better in the genre.
Also, for all your D&D-based humor needs: http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript -
Make love, not lightning! Can't we all just get along?
Maybe it has to do with the general attacks on our environment these days
...Or maybe we should just be happy with the lightning guns, and hope they don't come up with any other bright ideas.

Re:You've got a point
There's also the distinguishing mark of what McCloud calls "closure." It's the ability, the necessity actually, of the human mind to connect the panels of a comic together narratively.
For example, in a comic ilike this episode of Order of the Stick, the humor lives in the last two panels. The reader creates the action of the dragon eating the party.
McCloud draws levels of closure distinguished by how granular the passage of time is as related to the narrative. Animation easily eliminates much of the instant-to-instant granularity of closure by expressly displaying it -- when a character moves from one end of the frame to the other, that action is generally animated as motion. The imagination of the audience is less engaged.
More avant garde animations might use fades, dissolves, or wipes, which make them more comic-like while reconstructing the influence of time on the medium. ...
Wow. That's what I get for all that fancy book-learnin', I guess. -
Saw a good one...

Re:Well...
On the other hand, I believe having real comic books published online would be a boon for the industry.
They have for quite some time now. They're certainly nothing new (unless by "real" you meant the many rehashed comics from the 1930s.
If DC/Marvel had a decent online presence and started making original comics again, Keenspot and the rest of the webcomic industry would be hard-pressed.
I can see them having an online presence before they start actually make original comics. But even if they did do both, I just can't see them handling the sort of comics I've come to enjoy, so I doubt very much Keenspot would be threatened by them. -
Re:Compass
Nah, a hex grid is better. Movement and spell areas are more realistic that way.

Re:Implications
It's true, you can't trust guys with goattees.

Re:Yeah, but are they FUNNY?Show me a print comic strip that is consitently funny.
That said, I've gotten regular chuckles from:
- Sexy Losers (NOT work safe)
- Sinfest
- Order of the Stick (thanks to someone on
/. last time comics were discussed)
Only Sinfest is a daily strip. The Sexy Losers is updated... apparently whenever the guy has time. Order of the Stick a M-W-F strip.

Re:You're a brave man!
I'm all about "The Order of the Stick" myself.
-
My theory...is that he wasn't a victim of D&D, but, rather, bad customer service.
Sometime you just gotta kill someone after dealing with a prick like that.
;-) -
Re:Too cool
Just in case you (or someone else) hadn't noticed, Order of the Stick does have hardcopy coming out! Order from here.
-
Too cool
This and Order of the Stick are the two webcomics that I like enough to invest my money in a harcopy version of their work.
-
Re:There's a good reason
Not all D&D players are your typical generalization. Nor are all of them imaginative.
Just ask every drow who's an outcast from his/her people, and not really evil, dual scimitars and all. -
D&D Nerds
For you D&D nerds out there (present and accounted for!), I highly recommend The Order of the Stick. It's just updated Monday and Thursday (soon to be three times a week), but it's excellent.
-
Best stick-figure comic
There's a great stick-figure comic called Order of the Stick.

Re:Quantity over Quality
Not to mention the aptly-named Order of the Stick
