Re:So much for public charging locations
Should be trivial to construct a USB charging cable with inline fuses (or sacrificial caps/resistors/diodes), maybe adding $1 to the cost of the cable, and protecting your expensive devices from not just intentional sabotage, but also cheap, poorly engineered chargers, which might just kill you.
It was already bad hygiene to plug-in a USB cable that has the data lines intact into a public port, as all your data could be quietly siphoned off, and malware loaded on. If this new threat gets people to pay attention to previous threats, we might all be better off for it.

Before the election, people were worried...
we proved many times before the election that many elections machines could be hacked. the election officials said no, dont worry, it's not going to happen. now that people are not getting their way they are finding any dumb excuse.
Huh. I would have said exactly the opposite. Before the election many people, including people in government, were saying that we need to worry about hacking, that there were many organizations targeting this election (see here and here and here), but now that the election is over, people are saying don't worry, no problem.

Re:Hillary did not lose because of fake news
2. Unscrupulous: When Bill Clinton was done his 2nd term, the Clintons took over $100,000 worth of White House furniture and decor. They were forced to pay or return it.
Ah, I remember this one. Once more exaggerated accusations that don't rise to the level you want to pretend it is.
Look, you want to espouse the principle that politicians should live in ascetic austerity, go ahead, but right now? You've got bupkus in the way of substance. Oh my, disagreement over who owned what, and misunderstandings. My word, the same thing happens every day in court. Every day.
But let's burn the witch, because that's the way you have to do things.
I look forward to your silence about Trump's misdeeds and peccadilloes though. It'll make listening to the crickets all the more interesting.
I do wonder how many racists will be complaining about Obama trashing the White House in some way, maybe with some note about fumigation, or getting the smell of grease out of the carpets. And of course, it won't be racist at all. Nope. Just a coincidence.
Oh, FUCK YOU
:Former President Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, have sent $28,000 worth of household goods back to Washington after questions arose over whether the items were intended as personal gifts or donations to the White House.
...After they were criticized for taking $190,000 worth of china, flatware, rugs, televisions, sofas and other gifts with them when they left, the Clintons announced last week that they would pay for $86,000 worth of gifts, or nearly half the amount.
Their latest decision to send back $28,000 in gifts brings to $114,000 the value of items the Clintons have either decided to pay for or return.
So your defense of the Clintons is effectively: they got away with stealing $76,000 worth of stuff.
You're too dumb to know how dumb you are, aren't you?

I guess you did miss that he's considering Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D) for a cabinet position.
Of course, considering the other cabinet picks he has in the works, this may just be window-dressing.

Re:Why?
Isn't there? When I had young children I heard about that constantly; men can make a very valuable contribution to the traditional women's jobs. We simply have a different approach doing things
Nursing is one thing, find me a Kindergarten teacher that isn't female. Males have been largely chased out of early education, and it's moving up the chain . Men who are interested in being around children are now considered pedophiles. A male who wants to teach young children is immediately suspect.
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/m...
From the article:
"It's very hard to change the suspicion of men who are going to elementary education when there are so few of them," Thompson said. "Schools ask me to talk to men on their faculty and when I sit with them behind closed doors, they say the moms look at them like potential pedophiles. "If they are too nurturing or a mother comes in and sees a teacher reading in a chair and the child is leaning against the teacher or cuddling him, they freak out," he said. "Men tell me they only have to look in the mom's face to know what they are thinking." So you would think that since males have been chased out of th eclassroom on account of us all wanting to boink the kiddies, it's now a safe haven, where women can teach th ekids without mommy worrying about them.
Well mommy might not be worrying, but teh lady teachers appear to like a little bit of underage dickin'. You can do the research. Still a fair bit of statutary rape goin on in the classeroms by teachers - even if the teachers are female.

Re:Snowden also did something illegal
Well, the GOP offices have been firebombed ("Nazi republicans get out"). Someone here on Slashdot was calling that a "Reichstag fire" (yeah, umm, so where are the riots over it? oh, right... the GOP doesn't stage those). People on the Democratic payroll (MoveOn, specifically) were responsible for staging the violence at Trump rallies and then blamed Sanders supporters for it. Oh, and there was a mysterious DC "robbery" (where nothing was taken) with the guy shot twice in the back in the middle of the night. Who was an insider that may have been responsible for some leaks. Don't worry! Fact checkers "debunked" that due to there being "no evidence" on the same day (investigate? why?). The killer has not been caught.
But we can ignore that because Russia? If Putin wanted to influence the elections, it's pretty clear that he could've just donated to the Clinton foundation like Qatar, Saudi Arabia and everyone else.

Re:The odds
Samsung has sold millions of these things. Three of them have caught fire. That makes the odds of a device catching fire less than 1 in 1,000,000. Business Insider says that 17 cars catch fire every hour. Where are the cries for recalling cars?
I'm going to keep a copy of your post for safe keeping. This "what about y" device is constantly being invoked as justification for everything from mass surveillance to red rum so often in so many different contexts it usually makes me cringe/sigh Al Gore style whenever I encounter it.

Re:guess again
Given the "Officials Investigate Leprosy Case in California" reality
:)
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/o...
The US will deal with such news by making the decades of very good public health and epidemiology political.
Infections and contagious conditions entering into the USA will just be a very hard to treat "rash".
Computer entry and collection of any such data will never make it out to the regional or national media.
Enforcement changes can also be seen in the lack of reporting on infectious like syphilis, gonorrhoea, infectious leprosy, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
Active tuberculosis is about all the US gov will ever admit to be able to track in public.
"Medical Examination of Aliens-Revisions to Medical Screening Process" (01/26/2016)
https://www.federalregister.go...
With political change US doctors will not longer mention or track communicable disease.
That will be fun for top US experts at international medical conventions. The US case count this years is? Classified, redacted, not ready, not found, guess?
Could other nations ever even trust US medical data collection again? Lack of reporting and an active under reporting policy would make all such US stats useless.
What will that expensive and advanced US medial degree be worth if basic reporting trust is gone? -

Re:Really? Why?
I'll add that the Clinton campaign has been proudly touting its Twitter and social media strategy ahead of the debate. They are happy to tell you that they have their affiliated PACs and supporters coordinated in a campaign to influence debate moderators to "fact check" Trump during the debate, producing an advantage for Clinton.
They also proudly tout their strategy to have an army of supporters and astroturfers alike live-tweet the debate to create the impression that Hillary is winning the debate. They are specifically targetting the reporters and pundits who cover the event to ensure that they get the early buzz as winning the debate and have a quick declaration that "the election is over" following the debate.
This story, with labels like "Shitposting" would appear to be cover for this strategy, designed to neuter any criticism of the Clinton strategy, which has been fairly openly discussed at least since the Matt Lauer national security forum.
So we have moved into a new era of political ground game - where social media is used in increasingly sophisticated ways by the campaigns to influence the election. They both seem relatively hamfisted about it at this point, but that doesn't mean it isn't having an effect.

Re:Missing the point
Re 'Massive incompetence in the CIA is the only possible explanation."
Kept it safe from the NSA, GCHQ, MI6, other parts of the CIA or other agencies... or just decades of later FOIA requests.
The point is not to have anything thats interesting to your own staff, rogue staff, long term spies, 5 eye nations, the NSA, ex staff, former staff who might be looking or have sold/given/been of the same faith/cult and liked to give details to other govs, mils...
The selection of a mainstream US brand is so unexpected it almost feels like a limited hangout to see who is looking.. that might have kept other US agency staff guessing about the real role of just such an account. Bait, limited hangout, a long term trap, a totally created account as part of an ongoing FBI domestic cyber trap.. something for the NSA to wonder about. Was the CIA setting a spy trap and not sharing domestically ? A trap to induce diplomatic/other gov staff to contact their deep cover staff at any level of the US gov to see it was really real.. Any search for a unique term mentioned would have been perfect.
Thats another aspect of the US cyber teams foreign and domestic overlap that now has so much agency duplication and international help. Was it FBI, MI6, CIA joint long term bait? Did the NSA know, at what level and when?
Recall the massive lost of US gov workers, contractors data that was kept in plain text on open servers ..
Parts of the US gov knew people had access and hoped they would look for names online. The data walked in bulk and was totally lost ..
But for a while all that other agency and new digital security clearance data was left and kept wide open as a huge open honeypot.

"Over the next several months, the hacker moved unchecked through the system and stole sensitive security clearance background investigation files, personnel files and, ultimately, fingerprint data."
One part of the US gov needs the contractors, another part just sees the gov/mil files as massive online bait.
So expect to see a lot more easy honey pots, limited hangouts as policy. The real smart agency workers files are never allowed online, but a vast pool of contractors, low end staff or staff with new plastic digital clearances will be left out in the wild for anyone to read up on. Just in the hope direct searches are done online rather than just downloading it all...
Remember the technology was selected to be plain text, wide open, network ready and was left like that as policy. -

Re:Clinton should be in jail!!!
They spend (at most) 10% of the foundations huge cash flow on actual charities/causes. The rest is all "administrative" fees and costs, including large salaries for cronies who "consult" with the foundation, and a huge parade of paid-for amenities for the the foundation's star attractions: Bill, Hillary, and their daughter. Do you really think that one dollar out of ten spent on "causes" is the sign of a proper charitable foundation? It means they are either corrupt, or incredibly incompetent - just like everything else they run.
Do you think your numbers are accurate? Or perhaps you can explain why other examinations don't agree with your conclusions. Surely you can show your own numbers are more valid than independent examinations. If not, it means you are either corrupt, or incredibly incompetent.
