Postal 2
So I should be ashamed for playing Postal 2 as a M-16 toting Gary Coleman shooting a likeness of Osama Bin Laden? I guess if I didn't game on a Mac I might have healthier game choices available.

Re:A note on the department...
A 2d guy on an isometric map? I was thinking of this game, perhaps you were thinking of something else. I admit to never having played the original but the sequel uses the Unreal engine... the most powerful and flexible FPS engine at the time of its release.

A note on the department...
Z does stand for good things. Violence is a good thing, especially when it's something certain gamers look for. Like, say, myself.
You know y'all loved the Postal series. At least your id did. There's no denying it. -
full statement
I don't know why the submitter would submit this story and leave out the link to the real story...
http://www.gopostal.com/statement/
Maybe he was afraid people would browse the site and buy the game or even find the "Postal Babe of the Month" section :) -
If you ask me...
...holiday gaming begins and ends with the Postal "Santa patch" add-on.

Re:Arrogance that could power a city.
Nicely said!
I wonder if these protesters have ever heard of Running With Scissors?
First mission in Postal2 you have to deal with people just like this. Gasoline was never so much fun! -
Engine re-use
Many games simple are existing engines with mods to them. Green Berets is MYST II, modified. Postal 2 is built of the UNREAL engine.
If open source could come up with a kick but 3D engine, that would be the equivalent of the Linux OS team. Other teams could develop games from the core engine. Equate that to KDE or GNOME.
While it is possible, and it is being done, it will exist much as Linux does today. Not mainstream. If it ever does take off, it will turn commercial. At least, that is my opinion. Others vary.

Fun fps Postal

WHO CARES!!!!
If you want religion, go to church.
If you want to play a video game, play a video game.
Personally, I would like to see more video games that portray religion as the scourge that it is. POSTAL 2 does a pretty good job of portraying the religious as a bunch of loonies.
Why do these religious freaks insist on putting their hand into everything? They want prayer in schools, they want religion in Rock, now in games. Screw them all. Seriously, screw them! -
Re:I don't care how realistic the figures look...
This actually brings up a good point. Games like Postal 2 are full of brutal and bloody violence. In the article, Clive Thompson says the characters in games look like "animated corpse(s)." I for one would rather be brutally killing things that may try to be realistic, but are obviously not, than ones that actually come closer to fooling us into believing they're human.

Re:Agreed.
Indeed. That's something the author forgot to mention: new consumers.. or kids, whatever.
As you said, new generations don't play retro games - they just think they suck, more or less. They probably think: "Why play that game when this one has almost the same content/gameplay/etc, but is much prettier? (or harder or, yes, even better! eg: Scorched Earth vs Worms)
New games don't equal remakes of old ideas, even though many of them are. There are many unique games out there that don't quite fit in a specific genre. Just look at Syndicate or, damnit, Tetris! Yes, I know they're "old", but they're unique! Sure, some could say Syndicate is just a abstract remake of Cannon Fodder, but that's not quite true. If another company steals a truly unique concept, they will be marked as ripoffs, lame, etc. By the "older" generation, that is. But hey, there are ripoffs that are unique in their own way, even though it has "been done before": Postal 2
Don't try to flame me by saying "Those games are new!" or "When I was a kid all we could play were textmode games!", that's beside the point. The point is: I don't think many kids today have played the "good ol' games". So when a so called new game comes out, it will attract the younger generation.
Games will be fun for a long time, as long as there are people who like games and challenges, and people (kids) who have never played them before. I don't see the end of this market in the near future. If it dies, it probably won't be because of lack of entertainment value. -
Try this
Go Postal. Or rather, go Postal 2.

Postal 2?
Not GTA3, but how about this
You can use various disliked public figures as DM characters, I believe. -
Re:Video Game Reviewers...There is a patch that helps the load times.
I personally noticed a 60% load time reduction.
Would you rather I pissed on virtual people or should I go and piss on real people? Should I indulge in violent acts in a virtual world or should I commit violent acts in public?

Re:Anyone else predict....
or a 3D version of Postal
Oh you mean Postal2 nothing quite like taking a head off with the shovel, kicking it down the street and having the dog bring it back to you to play fetch...
Soon to be released with Multi player. -
Re:Sick, Offensive Games
If I was a programmer, I would create games where you try to kill the President or a game where you get points for each nun you rape. Why? Because it would offend people.
I think Running With Scissors has a job opening for you. -
Re:And California?

Re:Rape?
Part of what makes the GTA series sell is that there doesn't seem to be a line Rockstar won't cross. The first company who makes a game that crosses a new line is first to market a game with some totally new aspects which makes the game more interesting.
I disagree entirely.
Compare GTA3/VC with Postal 2. If GTA3's sales could be attributed to its pushing the boundaries of good taste, then Postal 2 should be an unprecedented blockbuster. But it's not.
Although it's an arguable point, I'm convinced that GTA3's success stems from its quality as a game, not from being controversial. In fact, if you look at the differences between GTA3 and GTAVC, Rockstar North actually made it *harder* to behave immorally in Vice City, as the police are far more difficult to evade.
Despite what authoritarians might tell you, GTA3/VC didn't reward you for killing innocent people. There are many missions where you must kill, but you're only forced to kill other criminals. (Why is it "okay" to kill criminals? I'm not sure; ask the majority of Americans who support the death penalty.) Sure, you can hire a prostitute. That's legal in many places in the world, including Nevada, U.S.A..
Here's the line that I wouldn't expect Rockstar North to cross: I wouldn't expect them to cast you as a junkie, and to reward you for getting your next fix. I wouldn't expect them to reward, or even allow, rape. I wouldn't expect them to reward (or even fail to punish) the murder of innocents.
I'll re-evaluate my positive assessment of Rockstar North if they prove me wrong on these points, but I don't expect them to do so. -
Re:this should do it
Also, it was quiet interesting Americas Army came out before UT2K3 using the UT2K3 engine. So the engine does look good on other non-bouncy fps games. (Any other U2K3 engine based games out?)
From the Unreal Wiki, released UT2k3 engine games:
America's Army
Devastation
Raven Shield
Splinter Cell
Unreal 2
Unreal Championship
Postal 2 ...and of course itself, and any others I have forgotten.
Notable upcoming Unreal Engine games include:
Deus Ex 2
Thief 3
XIII
Unreal Warfare, Epic's worst-kept secret, is next-generation (from UT2003's engine) and is said to rival Doom 3s and Half Life 2s. Speculation I have heard is that is seems to be a large scale combat game (either that or i'm getting this confuesd with Digital Extreme's Stargate game), perhaps in the style of BF1942 or PlanetSide (yes, there are games in development (unannounced) that are using the Unreal Engine as a platform for a MMORPG, so it is a possibilty). -
Postal 2 is out!
Hi
Check out Postal 2... www.gopostal.com or www.postal2.com. If you enjoy pointless violence, this is for you! Show your support by purchasing this game. Don't be a pirating ass-tard! This game is nice. Real nice. Heh.
After getting all the way through and "beating" the game, you can play an "Enhanced Game" where you have special powers and some of the weapons behave differently. Think urine=flame-thrower!
-
Here's your violence, Sir!
While bouncing through this Postal 2 site I found the Severance mod.
Description:
You can now shoot limbs off of people and corpses, right down to their little midsections. Different weapons have a better chance of removing a limb and being closer will improve your chances, except for the sniper rifle which ignores the distance check. Pistols will sometimes remove limbs whereas shotguns will frequently remove them (at closer ranges).
I think that's pretty violent. Maybe too violent.

Re:DiversionsYou could play the Postal 2 demo and pretend!
This is a great idea though, anyone care to make a Half-life mod involving tormenting spammers? heh

Typical Australian Liberal Government Policy
This move to "reclassify" (ie. censor) a whole stack of games right before Christmas, when demand for such games is at its highest, reaks of not only ignorance but a certain sense of mean-spiritedness. And this isn't the first time that the Australian government has tried to ban games it didn't like. First up was an FMV-driven graphical adventure by the name of Phantasmagoria because it contained very violent scenes and was thought to have contained a possible scene of sexual violence. Next in the firing line was Carmageddon, which the government attempted to ban on the laughable premise that it would encourage people to run each other over (interestingly enough, the sequel, which contained more realistic graphics than the first, passed through without dissent). The game Postal also came into the firing line, although I'm not sure if it was banned or not (I think it was). What strikes me as even more odd this time around is that the first two GTA games passed through practically untouched, while this game was allowed to be released and is now being recalled right before the busy and lucrative Christmas holiday period. Furthermore, the basis on which the game is being banned ("sexual violence") is extremely tenuous because the act of killing a prostitute after (and not before or during) sex shouldn't qualify as sexual violence. The term "sexual violence" refers to violence that is being committed during the act of sex (eg. rape or killing someone during sex), which is not the case here. Yes, the game does allow you to kill a prostitute after you have sex with her, but the two acts as described are not mutually exclusive (ie. you can do one or the other as well as both) and are not necessary to win or advance in the game itself. Yes, the possibility of committing the described acts may offend your sensibilities but you do have the democratic freedom in this country to not perform the acts in-game or, even better, not buy the game altogether. This recent move to remove all the games from stores effectively removes that democratic freedom. Controlling what you see, do, read, write and say should be your responisibility and not that of your government. Same goes for parents with children. If you continue to abdicate such a right (this responsibility is also one of the fundamental democractic rights of my nation, Australia) to government then you lose the right to complain when things don't go the way you want them to or when the government starts to take more than they're entitled to.
The reason for all this madness when it comes to the classification of video is that the Liberal government (which has just won its thoroughly undeserved second term by successfully tapping into the nation's xenophobic tendancies over the Tampa incident and illegal immigrants in general) is notoriously conservative and ignorant when it comes to matters of new technology. For instance, they banned online gambing in Australia, effectively giving the world market a huge headstart, because a moratorium was needed to "assess the risks of online gambing" when in reality the government had allowed, even promoted, the installation of poker machines in pubs and clubs with willful ignorance of the social consequences. They also tried to remove "offensive content" from the Internet (ie. net censorship), which merely made it hell for companies to host content locally for fear of being shut down by an anonymous person who was offended and forced ISPs to do the technically impossible and monitor their services for such "offensive content" (a term which was not even properly defined and hence gave the bill a DMCA-like level of scope). However, this bill was necessary to gain the support of Independent senator Brian Harradine, whose vote was needed to swing the balance of power towards the government so the "wonderful" GST could be passed (which the government screwed up in spectacular fashion by creating mountains of red tape through increased business paperwork and "exceptions" fiascos, when they would have been better off by taxing everything and giving income tax cuts). So what starts out as beeing a possibly good idea becomes a complete pain in the ass. Furthermore, the little surplus (which was collected by slashing budgets across the board, especially in the areas of health, R & D, the arts, science and education - now university costs a packet and we're behind in pretty much everything), often derisively called the "election battle chest", was used to offer all kinds of expensive gifts to the electorate to lure their votes in the election. Now that they've spent it, the only way they can get more money to actually do something useful is to raise taxes or cut spending (usually the latter). Wonderful.
So as you can see, this kind of inconsistent, ignorant, poorly-implemented crap, I mean policies, (ironically the only consistency in government policy is it has all these properties) happens all the time. The sad part is we're used to it, even expecting it to happen.

Re:Old Game?
First of all I would like to say... Why not port this sucker? It's a fun game to mess with and doesn't involve any fancy 3D. And it isn't _that_ old. The date on it is 1997. You can read all about the controversy over here http://gopostal.com along with screenshots etc. It is funny how some people say we port "old games" but then theres this whole group of people asking us to port counter-strike/half-life which isn't exactly new.

Re:shame about the webserver though
Yea. I couldn't faind any screenshots anywhere...
