Re:Living sample
Way off topic.... They have samples of the music on his page. It is terrible, it is in real format.
http://www.hatchmusic.com/real/my_god_is_love/mygod.ra The title of this file gave me a chuckle though.
MyGod.RA... I didn't know that Hatch was an Egyptian! -

Finally, Orrin Hatch can sell music again
He's been worried about flagging CD sales since before he ever tried to have accused copyright violators' computers destroyed, but for some reason the profits he should be seeing from How His Glory Shines are still vanishing, as if down some Glory hole. Could it be that Orrin's music no longer resonates with today's youth? Could it be that the "Order" link at the top of his music webpage is broken, and nobody even noticed until some jerk on Slashdot decided to click it to look for more things to make fun of?
No. Of course not. It must be the counterfeit used CDs' fault. -
Re:Speaking of laws...
Oh, that's right. They paid off the politicans. Is the lobster to your taste, Mr. Hatch?
Orrin Hatch isn't just some bought-off Senator - he's also a successful recording artist!
http://www.hatchmusic.com/
So you see, Senator Hatch has a rather personal stake in copyright law. I mean, if his works weren't protected by civil and criminal law unto 70 years after his death, he'd have no incentive to create anything.

The Senator As Singer-ComposerAs usual, follow the money....Orrin Hatch received $126,918 from the entertainment industry in this last cycle
Orrin Hatch is also a respected singer-composer and publisher with deep roots in Christian music. The Music of Senator Orrin Hatch. Orrin Hatch - LDS Musician, Composer/Senator Orrin Hatch.
-
Re:Hoisted By Their Own Petard!
I believe he also, at one point, used LAME to compress samples of his music. He uses Realplayer now. Is this a coincidence, or did Fraunhoefer come a-knocking for some protection money?
-
You cant..
You can't beat the man, give up. They have you by the balls. Which balls, the balls = 99% of consumers who don't give a shit that big businesses can do whatever they please and think its "un-American" to question capitalism, even when the markets are obviously and publicly manipulated. I mean whats the alternative, letting people steal Orin Hatch's wildly popular music? Unthinkable.
-
Re:does anyone else see the irony
No irony there. Hatch is a hobbyist Christian musician who commercially sells some of his music.
-
Re:Not really
I found this article on Mr Hatch quite amusing too for anyone interested... Orrin Hatch, Software Pirate?
Hatch himself, is actually an amateur musician (http://www.hatchmusic.com/). I am guessing we will not be seeing his latest album available through Napster. -
Re:Powerful incentives (and interests)
Interestingly, that's not his only incentive to block p2p. He's also an "Exceptional Singer, Songwriter and Composer". And, though you can listen to a few of his songs on his web site, it's hard to believe that he's not one of the top two or three most pirated artists on the net. I mean, according to one Sony exec, "On any given day in Nashville we receive 200 good songs. What we are interested in is great songs. We think two of the songs are great songs and that they'll be around for 100 years or more". And of course, no one in the record industry would ever lie to further their own agenda.
-
Re:Powerful incentives (and interests)
Are you sure his incentive isn't simple in being an artist himself? http://www.hatchmusic.com/
Tonight at Saltair, on the anti-P2P tour, Orrin Hatcn and Metallica! -
Now i see why hes worried...
Sen. Hatch is only protecting himself from these damn pirates, since it is practically assured that his music is on the top of pirates most wanted music lists around the globe. Or maybe hes a just the fascist pinhead he asserts himself to be.
-
One good thing about Orrin Hatch...
At least he writes & sings better songs than John Ashcroft.
-
Orrin Hatch is just pissed...
that nobody is copying his music

Quick, Someone Share Orrin Hatch's Album!
I know I'm late to this story so maybe no one will see this, but Sen. Orrin Hatch has his own cd out. Maybe if all of a sudden his album was downloaded 1000's of times, he would change his tune.

Re:On whose behalf?
- Illegal price fixing (RIAA)?
- They were found guilty and supposedly paid the price they deserved. The open debate about the severity of the fine is irrelevant.
And shortly thereafter, they had the law changed to legalize price fixing for online music distribution.
- The record industry already has an antitrust exemption that allows record companies to jointly negotiate royalty rates for digital distribution. Late last year, the music industry convinced Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to insert language into the EnFORCE Act (Enhancing Federal Obscenity Reporting and Copyright Enforcement Act of 2003) that would extend that exemption to "physical product configurations" such as CDs. That bill is still in committee.
Surprise! There's a name I'm always hearing good news about: Orrin Hatch. You know, the DMCA's author. The 'nuke your hardware with a file sharing virus' guy. The infamous software pirate himself?
After finding HatchMusic, I think I understand him now. It's not just the lobbyist bribes that motivate him. He must actually think that if he spreads enough KY Jelly on the American public's rectum for the RIAA, they'll give him "money for nothin' and chicks for free".
As a final note, if you find the KY Jelly comment a bit graphic, you'll be glad to know Orrin Hatch handed the pornography industry a blank check recently. What's not to like about the man?

Senator Hatch Sings the Hits!Um... yeah. I can't think of a witty comment for this, but here it is. Apparently Sen. Hatch not only wants to support the music nazis, he's also an aspiring artist himself! Right.
The Music of Senator Orrin Hatch

I'd love to see what those albums are
I suspect one of them may be the musical stylings of a certain U.S Congressman.

Should these people even talk....
...about technical issues. One of the co-sponsors of the bill can't seem to get her websites working.
http://lgraham.senate.gov/
http://www.lindseygraham.com/
In fact the whole senate.gov domain isn't even working. Guess the best way to stop piracy is to stop sharing files of any kind.
Co-sponsor Senator Hatch may be bias toward media companies. After all, I'm sure he's got a lot to lose if his work was pirated.
"I'm Goin' to Pray for this Land" indeed! -
Re:Scary
Maybe Hatch only wants to destroy the computers of people sharing his music. In which case I can't really argue against that plan.
-
What about his CD cover?Earlier today I was reading through the comments from the previous story about Senator Hatch, and someone mentioned his site, hatchmusic.com. I went and looked to see what kind of music he writes.
Check out this link: http://www.hatchmusic.com/songs.html
See the second CD from the bottom of the page, "Many Different Roads"? I thought the cover art looked awfully familiar. Turns out I have a copy of that rose picture on my hard drive from years ago. It's all over the web, and can be found via Google image search.
I don't know the history of that particular image or who owns the copyright to it, but I can't help but wonder if the good senator bothered to find out...
-
Re:Sensationalism...
He's not selling CD's from this site. He sells CD's from this site. Not that this proves that he's actually selling any CD's, just that they're for sale.
-
This makes perfect senseHatch is jealous that his cheeseball songs are not being traded on the p2p networks, so he wants to destroy them.
Anyway, the most shocking thing about the article is that he earned any money at all from selling that crap
:) -
Hatch: the man, the legendA little bit of Googling turned up some interesting stuff on this:
- He's got a website up promoting and selling his songs, along with Real Audio samples (why am I not surprised he's not using mp3s)
- Acording to a AP news wire from last week
In 2002, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee took in $18,009 from moonlighting as a songwriter, according to his latest Senate financial disclosure.
So, despite file trading and p2p networks, Sen. Hatch is earning more money than before. And they say file sharing is taking money away from artists, eh? Must be all those sales of the soundtrack from Rat Race.
It is Hatch's most successful single year as a songwriter; he has earned $65,986 in songwriting royalties since 1997. It comes on top of his $150,000 Senate salary and investment income between $56,000 and $122,000.
- There is a picture of Sen. Hatch with Barry Mannilow
... scary!
- He was also paid $2,123 last year for a voiceover he did for a character in an animated religious film. IMDB doesn't say which film, but did anyone else know he was in "Traffic"?
- He's got a website up promoting and selling his songs, along with Real Audio samples (why am I not surprised he's not using mp3s)

...would do better to stick to his fascinating musical career. He has done more to make a fool of his party's agenda, but not as much as some. What a schmuck!!

When Lobbying goes wrong
The old DRM Lobby has been trying a bit too hard. Some old folks in congress have got such a huge misunderstanding of how the machines that power our lives work it's incredible.
BTW, according to netcraft http://www.hatchmusic.com/ is running Apache on Linux.
That means Linus, as well as most other programmers who have worked on Linux or Apache would be able to remotely destroy his site. Bill Gates would be able to destroy 90% of the computers in existence.
I suppose this law would quickly be followed by a law making it illegal to block the port they pick. Or maybe they will just talk to your ISP, go to your house and take your computer. They can cut them up with axes in the street like the old prohibition days. I bet Hatch can remember those days himself.
:) -
Re:Later in the discussion...
Hmm... Although my recollection may be distorted and dimmed by the passage of time, as I see it, Hatch has none of the properties of female genitalia, which in any case happen to be praiseworthy, rather than pejorative, on the whole.
Hatch is a puritan (religious nut-case?) with unabashed authoritarian tendencies leaning strongly toward fascist, which ought to be damnable enough. Hatch is also almost certainly eloquent enough to insult you directly, without missing, and instead offending your mom, your sister, and any female lovers you may have had.
One other weird bit of Hatch Trivia: Hatch makes music, lots and lots of it. -
At first I thought...
...that he was a disgruntled artist tired of being ripped off by p2p users.
But now I see there's no danger of that. :) -
What songs has he written? If you read the article, it mentions he made $18k last year.
Check out his site for information on his music!

Re:Here was my posting of the story:
This picture from one of his album covers is a bit trippy. Wonder if any mind altering substances were indulged by the illustrator? It also seems to have a likeness of Saturn in the top right corner, someone must have copyrighted that. Ready, aim, fire....
-
Here was my posting of the story:
"Washington Post reports that the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Orrin Hatch from Utah, said Tuesday he favors developing new technology to remotely destroy the computers of people who illegally download music from the Internet. A notably quote: "If that's the only way, then I'm all for destroying their machines. If you have a few hundred thousand of those, I think people would realize [the seriousness of their actions]". Hatch has a personal interest, since I'm sure his music is pirated on a regular basis.
;)"
Just thought people might appreciate other links and such...guess I should've submitted it a couple minutes earlier....oh well :) -
Re:With Friends Like These...Quoth the poster:
With friends like Phyllis Schlafly, who needs enemies?
Just as well say, "With enemies like Phyllis Schlafly, who needs friends?" It's bloody stupid to cast people who don't agree with you on some issues as "enemies." This is a big, complicated issue in a big, complicated world, and there are plenty of opinions to go around.
Orrin Hatch, for instance, is a fairly conservative and very Christian man. We disagree on many important issues, but we do agree that citizens have fair-use rights to copyrighted material. Orrin's a musician, so he sees this issue from a very different side than most conservatives.
If Phyllis writes an editorial with which you agree, send her mail and say, "You and I disagree about many issues, but we're on the same wavelength here. Thanks!" Take help where you can find it, folks.
Off-topic rant: one of the most insidious and dangerous intellectual crutches many people use is this false dichotomy of "good" or "bad" people or ideas. No person, and precious few ideas, are wholly good or bad - most are some sort of compromise. Hitler instigated some of the most horrible acts ever seen on this planet, but word has it he was good to his dog.
Using this crutch is easy and tempting, but it immediately requires you to build up all sorts of mental walls. Instead, see both sides of an issue. See the ideas with which you disagree are formed, how they propogate, and why people espouse them - then attack the root, not the manifestation.
Mr. Senator from Disney doesn't kiss the Mouse's ass because he's evil, but because the ass is gold-plated and some of it rubs off on him. And our political system requires those at the highest level (e.g. U.S. Congress) to gather and spend truly stunning amounts of money to stay in power.
You can call people "evil" or "enemies" and thus shut yourself out of the system, you can work within the system to defeat those people (or more to the point, their ideas), or you can change the system. The latter two options require the ability to see both sides of an issue, and the causes of a person's behavior.
People's actions have good or evil consequences (often both); ideas have good or evil implementations. Get beyond the juvenile labels and to the root causes and you'll be a lot better off. -
My Favorite D.C. Musician doesn't have anything up
Guess I'll have to stick to clips from here.

Re:Have you seen this?
If that is scary to you, you had better not look at this.
-
Re:Wait a minuteThis is the second time in the last year that I have thought Hatch did something right. Now don't get me wrong I'm still glad that I voted against him but this is just plain odd....
On nearly every issue Hatch is indeed a conservative's conservative, but unfortunately for the RIAA the Seanator is a musician himself. Funny how these things go sometimes.
-
Re:Why Orrin Hatch?Yes, I just ran into this same information myself. I'm sure that my head will stop spinning any minute at the bizarreness of this story...
It might be helpful to post Sen. Hatch's music site here: http://www.hatchmusic.com/
-
Re:Holy Water!
Well, Hatch has his own distribution system set up, he's got his stubby Mormon finger in the proverbial pie... http://www.hatchmusic.com/
-
The real motives
I'm surprised Hatch didn't, in the interest of full disclosure, provide a little background to his diatribe...
You see, once upon a time, Orrin Hatch recorded a CD full of music. Not just music, but folk music. Not just folk music, but Christian folk music. And it was bad - reeeaal bad. Bad enough to make William Shatner sound like Luciano Pavarotti. Really. Don't believe me?
Now, legend has it that old "Orrie" got spurned completely on his ass when he tried to sell his 74-minute croonfest to the major record labels. So it's obvious why he wants to screw them over now - as an independent artist, he has no way of circumventing the system! Digital distribution allows him to share his ... erm ... unique brand of music with the world. Hooray!
