broken already (it's lame)
"Anonymous Coward", the submitter, says "Check out what these crazy fools have done. One has to ask, exactly how much time these people have on their hands?"
Apparently you have enough time to speak in the third person about yourself. If you're going to astroturf your website at least make sure your machine and bandwidth can handle the load, idiot.
To those that couldn't load it: all you missed was a very slow loading gallery with 50 pictures and Quicktime movies of someone taking apart a hard disk and attaching shit to it.
Next story, please. -

uh?!
enforcer999 writes "As you know, the CAN SPAM ACT preempted many state laws that were tougher on spammers. For instance, many of the laws that were enacted by states included a requirement that sexually explicit SPAM be labeled as such. The FTC, in charge of adopting rules, came up with a new rule that will require sexually explicit SPAM to be labeled as such. Hmm? I think the states were already trying to do this before the Federal government preempted them. Anyway, I wonder if it will work?"
I highlighted in bold a point I am not sure I understood, is it willingly redundant or did the submitter write it twice because it went from the states laws to the ftc requirement ? -
Cybercafes bveing blacklisted by anti-spam sites. Our cafe was *BLACKLISTED* by spamcop.
Does anyone else find having entire Cybercafes blacklisted by anti-spam filters a bit worrying?
I do a lot of travelling, and about a year ago, I noticed that in a lot of Cybercafes, when I tried to e-mail a particlar person, I got an automated response from their mail-server to say it had rejected the e-mail because it was spam. I usually use my Freeserve account (via a web-mail interface). I wondered how my e-mail address could have become blacklisted, and tried my Hotmail account which I hardly use (I only got one could use MSN messanger). The Hotmail e-mail got through (I got no automated rejection, and even a reply). This at first led me to the conclusion that my Freeserve e-mail address had been blacklisted. Later, I found that sometimes, e-mails from my Freeserve account would get through, and at other-times, they would be rejected.
Eventually, I figured out that it was the IP address of the place I was sending it from that triggered the spam-filter. This has lead me to two conclusions.
- E-mails sent from Hotmail accounts are immune to spam-filters, but not from Freeserve accounts.
- Just about half of the Cybercafes or Internet-Kiosks I have been to have been abused by spammers.
Do all spam-rejecting filters give out an automated rejection-reply? If not, then I won't know that my e-mail has been rejected by an anti-spam filter, and I won't try to mail it again from my Hotmail account or another place with Internet access.

Re:Agreed.
"(it's not a Genesis, silly Americans)"
What the fuck? It was called the Genesis in the United States so I don't know why someone who called the system a Genesis would be "silly." You're a cunt Greg Tebbutt. Tell me, when you go to eBay to find an old console to play Sonic on, are you going to search for Megadrive or Genesis? Take your snide little anti-American sentiments elsewhere moron. -

Not an endorsement, an "I don't care if you do it"
From the dictionary--
en*dorse - To give approval of or support to, especially by public statement; sanction: endorse a political candidate. See synonyms at approve.
This did not happen. The quote from the article which you've fictionalized into an "endorsement" goes something like this--
"I also don't necessarily like DRM myself," Torvalds wrote on the "Linux-kernel" mailing list. "But...I'm an 'Oppenheimer,' and I refuse to play politics with Linux, and I think you can use Linux for whatever you want to--which very much includes things I don't necessarily personally approve of."
Please, xgyro, tell us how you extrapolated "use Linux for whatever you want to...[including] things I don't necessarily personally approve of" into "endorsed"?
A Microsoft troll, no doubt, but necessary to refute. Fiction becomes myth becomes fact after time. -
Without a doubt
Nothing would make me happier than getting all farty and bloated on a frothy latte while blowing my secretary/programmer salary 1:1.
Hell, I could check out all the latest innovations in penis enlargement technology, maybe peruse a little man-on-goat-on-sister incest reading, settle in on a favorite literary magazine... is it worth $10 an hour?
You bet your sweet ass it is, just as long as I can afford another 10-spot to pay my gimp to read it to me. -
Re:Real programmers...
I intend on putting my stuff up on Freshmeat or equivalent sometime in the future.
I'm going to do a little research first, and see if there is already a project that is a going concern before I do - that way I don't duplicate efforts.
If you want to contact me regarding this, email me at this location and I will give you what I've got (grep.py atm). -

Re:CNET have all the best domains!
> They must have damned good renewal services...
Maybe they simply have auto-renewal and don't let some domains expire like some people.
Not quite as good as you listed, but some others in the C|Net network:
zdnet.com
gamespot.com
mysimon.com
techrepublic.comWait until they buy Internet.com and About.com. Then they will truely control the Internet!
-
Re:It's questionable
But Microsoft re-brands everything they buy. Maybe I am missing something, but everything in software division gets rebranded with MS logos, graphics and colors, everything in Web division is now called MSN something with butterfly attached.
Buying up Google and running it as a separate company might be a good idea for them, but it would probably be merged into MSN division sooner or later, to avoid the overlap in sales, accounting, marketing, engineering, etc. -
Re:eek!
Ugh this is depressing.
Remember Hotmail? The original nice and simple hotmail? The one that didn't have a zillion ads, didn't run like a slothpig, and didn't delete peoples e-mail after a few days. The one whose service didn't get worse and worse while fees for services once free increased?
Decemeber 31 1997 rolls around and the beast (fat beast) comes and assimilates a once great service. At first it isn't so bad, just a little MS logo or mention here and there. But now check it out. -

Re:Pay OneWhere? Who?
After reading a book written by a counselor who placed new grads in a position for a pctg (paid by the hiree), I tried in vain to find someone who would take my money in exchange for placement assistance. What are they called in the Yellow Pages? Is there an industry-association webpage that directs you to these types of service providers? Fortunately, I'm not currently looking for work, but if you anyone has any pointers...mail me (remove the underscores)

Re:Vancouver's Pretty Nice
More Canadian-job-seeker questions: where's the best place to go look for employment opportunity in Canada? Is there anything largely available on the web? Publications? Where should I go?
Furthermore, what are the chances Canadian tech companies will hire talent from the United States? Is it a shot in the dark or are many open to the possibility?
By the way, tell me where to send resumes.

Re:It's not a bad thing
Spam is a social problem, just like any other type of fraud.
Yes, often the goods and/or services promoted through spam are fraud, but spam itself is not fraud. It is advertising.
As for the problem, I see it as a technical problem, as in "Why can't my damn service provider reject email with forged headers, from unsecured servers, from ISP's that are notorious for hosting spamers, and is obviously and easily recognised as spam by even the most half-assed filters? I guess I'll have to get my service somewhere else or check and filter it myself."
I haven't been "on the 'net" all that long (about seven years), but I still wonder when it happened that my fellow "netizens" started begging to be regulated. If you have a spam problem, do something about it. Learn something about the problems with open relays, irresponsible ISPs and how touse procmail to filter spam.
Help others learn by pointing them in the right direction.
Encourage your provider to take proper measures to stop spam from entering or exiting thier domain, and put pressure on other providers to do the same.
Don't use services that encourage spammers (Hotmail, AOL, MSN, Mail.com, etc)
Stop asking lawmakers who don't understand the problem to do something about it. -

not why, but how?
I understand why msn would want to be the number one search engine but, not to start a flame war or anything, I just don't see what msn could possibly offer that google doesn't already oiffer, execpt possibly passport.
The whole point of google is that it is incredibly simple and it gets great results from queries. The incredibly simple part is something I don't imagine msn's competitor will have on the account of.. well just look at it, and again.
So, why would one choose msn over google unless it offers some sort of advantage (intigration with the next distribution of windows possiblly)? -

"cellular" TV?
I think that this is an excellent idea! Although, it does not have to be an all or nothing proposition. Rural areas could keep more of the spectrum for broadcast TV while developed areas could use the spectrum for wireless netoworking. Or, what if we made TV "cellular," with content delivered to a station within a cell by fiber, and then broadcast at a lower power than TV stations currently use? I am from rural Iowa, which has a lower average income and education outside of the cities. But we also have a state-owned fiber network with a fiber end-point in every county. I think that it would be feasible here.
