Re: Isn't this thing already deployed?
You don't need 283 A-10s to fight ISIS. It looks like the number engaged is more like 12. They are flying a lot of missions, but there aren't dozens of them doing it.
Perhaps their should be.
Choppers are more expensive to operate, less effective, and more vulnerable than A-10s.

Remember we originally bought 700 to destroy massive Soviet tank columns in Europe. ISIS is a) much smaller, b) much less well-protected. You don't need a tank gun to take out a Toyota and (since their AA abilities are truly primitive) you can use choppers. The AF's desired number (283) is almost certainly overkill.

Re:contraband cellphones are persistant problemMany prisons are starting to use stingray type devices. If they cannot jam, they will track. Enough data points from called persons will easily track down the potential owners of a phone.

I was never a gang member, but due to my background I was the 'fix-it' guy. See if you can make a soldering gun out of pencil and an AC adapter. Then use it to desolder parts from devices to fix others...
I was a fair hand at this trade, and because it was pretty harmless, most of the guards ignored it. I was however trusted, and often phones came to me to either fix a busted charger/charge port, or for flip phones with a hard to conceal charging base, wire in a different charging mechanism. Those were fun jobs. Far better than replacing the thermal fuse in a fan coil.

Re:Meanwhile in SRS business continues as usual
So, how can the problem be "harassment" and "doxxing" when SRS is still allowed to exist?
That's simple, because many of the admins when they quit suddenly become mods of SRS. Just like Ellen Pao did, literally the second she quit a CEO. Or as I like to put it: SRS, where admins and CEO's go to show their true colours.
It is really, really ironic after the Ellen Pao pitchfork campaign that it turns out she was the only one at Reddit management fighting against censorship (and not involved in the firing of Victoria). These Reddit users attacked the only one that was actually on their side in this whole mess.

Beware the 'Pizza Delivery Syndrome'
The fault of that lies in Congress.
Spend Middle East War money on NASA and science and it goes a lot faster. You cannot successfully argue against war itself as a waste of human resources or a needless monetary expense. Sure you can philosophize and get a show of nodding heads in peacetime, but then something awful happens and someone shouts "Remember the Maine!" or "Hitler will invade the UK, then Mexico!" or "Let's get Bin Laden!" and all is moot. Inquiring line items is useful... such as whether ~$60 billion disappeared while out-sourcing the supply line or whether airlifting $40 billion in 'unmarked bills' into Iraq was a great idea.
Be sure to tune in C-SPAN today [Sunday] at 4:00pm ET to see how many senators believe the Patriot Act is a good thing. But I'd bet my bottom dollar that all the NSA rhetoric will center on so-called 'call metadata sharing agreements' with nary a word about full content backbone taps which are the greatest threat.
Government spending is a mysterious process. When it is time for the Fed to mint virtual money for Quantitative Easing, bail out banks by easing their losses, or the Federales to finance wars by raising the trade deficit ceiling and selling bonds to the Chinese we are awash in Magical Unicorn Money. When it is budget time every cent is haggled or omnibussed. Clearly this beast has two heads.
But you have to get more specific than 'military spending'. Pick something, anything and try to start a grass roots movement to attack it. Or better yet, just spend your time 'selling' space exploration in all of its forms. Neil deGrasse Tyson wasn't completely joking when he suggests that a militarized space race with China (or rumors thereof) would jump-start the process. A new Cold War would certainly unlock that Magical Unicorn Money. It may seem odd but weaponizing space is actually a good idea.
But there is something I call the 'Pizza Delivery Syndrome', where someone desirous of something, say a Space Program, will seize upon a money-factoid such as this
cite "Consumers spend around 33 billion U.S. dollars in quick service pizza restaurants each year in the United States. Takeout pizza constitutes the largest share of spending within this category at nearly 15 billion U.S. dollars annually, followed by pizza delivery at around ten billion. This is perhaps unsurprising considering more than 20 percent of U.S. consumers eat takeout or delivered meals at least once a week. While older generations appear less dependent on such services, around 40 percent of 18 to 54 year olds felt that takeout food was essential to their way of life as of November 2014..."
and create, out of thin air, some hypothetical world where every one who desires a pizza is visited by a Fairy Godmother who smiles and asks, do you really want that pizza or could we all fulfill mankind's most glorious dream? Your wish is my command. In this scenario they always choose the pizza, statistics show. It serves as foundation for acerbic commentary on the wretched excess of modern humans. This is a dead end because (on the whole) people would rather talk about pizza than space.
Ask not what pizza lovers can do for you.
Ask what you can do to send pizza into -

Let's call it what it really is..
The Clinton Corrupt Slush Fund for Easy Policy Change..
Need some weapons deals pushed through? Donate millions to the foundation! http://www.ibtimes.com/clinton...
And who really cares where the money goes.. Charity Navigator won't even rank them due to their "atypical business model." It's a slush fund for the Clintons to doll out favors to their political toadies. Nevermind Hillary's absurd "I can't carry two devices" excuse for hosting a private mail server in her house to conduct State Department business. -

Re:One word: Cloud
There are some good volunteer defenders -- I've met them, especially at The Innocence Project. The term that's usually used to describe them is "overwhelmed." But you want a just system, you can't depend on getting justice only if a volunteer happens to be available and willing. Why don't we depend on unpaid volunteer prosecutors? That would even the contest.
If you want to claim that the system is biased against blacks over whites after people are arrested, you'll need some evidence for that.
There's quite a bit of evidence. Here's what I got from a quick Google search:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/...
The Color of Justice
This study, released by the Justice Institute in February, 2000, found that in California, African American, Latino and Asian American youth are significantly more likely to be transferred to adult court and sentenced to incarceration than white youths who commit comparable crimes. Compared to white youths, minority youths are 2.8 times more likely to be arrested for a violent crime, 6.2 times more likely to wind up in adult court, and 7 times more likely to be sent to prison by adult court.Youth Crime/Adult Time: Is Justice Served?
This study released on October 26, 2000 by Building Blocks for Youth, found that minority youth, particularly African American youth, were over-represented and received disparate treatment at several points in the process. In the 18 jurisdictions in the study, 82% of the cases that were filed in adult courts involved a minority. And Justice for Some
This 2000 study was prepared by The National Council on Crime and Delinquency for the Building Blocks for Youth Initiative. It concludes that "African American juveniles are overrepresented with respect to their proportion in the population at every decision point" in the juvenile justice process. Here's more:
http://www.ibtimes.com/ferguso...
If I wanted to get solid scientific evidence, I'd start with a law review article, maybe in Harvard Law Review or Yale Law Review.
Every system gives at least a little advantage to rich people, of course, that's what rich means after all.
You can't be perfect, but it's not "a little advantage." It's an unacceptable advantage. The money spent on defense should be equal to the money spent on prosecution, and commensurate with the costs of running the criminal justice system. If the taxpayers want to spend $500,000 to keep somebody in prison for 10 years, then those taxpayers should be willing to spend a similar amount of money to make sure the right person is convicted.
I think one of the reasons people accept this is the tradition of racism in this country, for example in Texas with its death penalty cases. The people who run society accept it when it happens to black people (and working class people) who aren't like them.
I realize no system is perfect, and I can accept the injustice of a multi-millionaire (or a cop) getting away with murder. But I can't accept the injustice of a poor man being executed for a murder he didn't commit, simply because Texas didn't want to spend as much money for a defense as they do for the prosecution.
One of the underlying problems is that the US has greater inequality than most developed countries. Poor people have disadvantages because there are more poor people here than most developed countries. You can't have a fair justice system with massive economic inequality.

Re:Progressive Fix 101
Bzzt! Wrong. Many of the vehicles that anyone looking at them would classify as full size SUVs use unibody construction, especially at the higher end. Mercedes, Lexus, Infinity, Audi, etc are all unibody. Even Cadillac is looking to move their full size SUV to unibody. All of these seat 7+ and tow 7000+ pounds.
As for safety, there are only nine vehicles that have 0 driver fatalities in accidents from 2009 to 2012. Six of them are SUVs! None of them are hybrids or economy models.

Because an egregious violation of someone's privacy that's can be traumatizing as a sexual assault is a minor thing.
Revenge porn is a sexual assault? Seriously? Do you also regard the iCloud compromise as a sexual assault?
His premise that revenge porn "can be as traumatizing as a sexual assault" is not in any way the same as saying "Revenge porn is a sexual assault.". What you did there was to twist his words to create a straw man to attack, saying his statement about traumatization was instead claiming actual assault. Re-read his statement and you'll see he never said what you claimed as his premise.

Are you insane?
I'm not a US citizen (German, but living in Switzerland), but follow the debate somewhat from the sideline - half amused, half horrified.
I suggest you take a look at the archive of the Isaac Brooks Society for FATCA:
http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/ta...
And judge for yourself if this is what you want to "gift" to your children?
I have to live here for a another couple of years before I can seek citizenship - but given the dire situation most countries' financials are in, I doubt they would enact the same laws as the US regarding out-of-country taxation - if they could enforce it.
If you love your kids, don't give them a US passport. It will severly limit what they can do later in their life
As for visa-free travel, see this page:

Re:Maybe they are just dumb?
I'd say yea, they certainly are dumb! Don't put an admin switch in a consumer app! Sure, they could have put in better checking to make sure it is an appropriate account accessing, but, still, it is better to just leave the code out of the app!
There should be a separate driver app, possibly off the app store. The Enterprise Program is not appropriate, because Uber drivers are not Uber employees, so not technically eligible. But Apple now has a B2B program where this would fit. Even a separate App-Store driver app would be better, because at least it wouldn't (normally) be in the hands of normal users. (I don't know nuthin about Google Play Store. But drivers could just install the driver app from a download on Android, right? Besides, nobody expects security on Android...)
Sure, an app-store driver app would be a target. Which is good. They'd have to be especially careful with that app to make sure that nobody can actually log-in with it without having a driver account. (But, really, best to keep it completely off the public App Store.)
I'm currently working on an app for Karaoke singers to show the Songbook and request to sing. (Works with some popular Karaoke-hosting software.) I'll also have a kiosk version and another version for Karaoke hosts to remote-control the show. Even for this, I know better than to put all this into a single app! Because: Karaoke Murders. Hey, some of these people are serious. Yea, if some singer could take over the show, they would. I mean, they sometimes do this:
I have a workflow for making variant apps. Don't just pour all the code into a single app!

Re:maybe we should
Where do you think he's getting all of these ideas for spaceships, cars, and hyperloops? With a name like "Elon Musk", he's not even trying to fool anyone. No way that name originated on planet Earth!
Really, it's pretty obvious that he's here to soften us up in preparation for an invasion. He's used his alien technology (a "software update" to improve 0-60 performance? yeah right!) to win over thousands of Teslacolyte converts already, with more joining his religion every day. His spaceship company is poaching the top talent from NASA, who otherwise would have been our best defense against alien attack. His electric cars can be crippled via software update and, if allowed to further propagate, will eventually lead to a reduction in our current fuel infrastructure that is outside of their control. Now he's talking about making whole-home batteries, meaning he could cripple all of our homes instantly too. And stuff like his hyperloop concept? It'll be used to get us to turn on each other as we fight over whether or not to accept the aliens and their promises of technological advancement.
Hyperloop in one tentacle, and a ray gun to betray us in the other. Just you wait and see.

Re:Windfall taxes are a crap idea.
Except that's not what Apple is doing. See the fact that Apple US paid 6 billion dollars in US taxes on 18 billion profit.
That is what they told you. The US Senate grabbed Apple's IRS paperwork and found a check for $2.5 billion.
What Apple Europe (which is in Ireland) does is holds all the profits that Apple makes in countries other than the US, because they can't bring that money back into the US. The US wants to charge a second round of taxes, even though European taxes have already applied.
European taxes have not been collected because of the tricks Apple uses. The EU is pursing Apple for dodged taxes as well. One of Apple's subsidiaries paid absolutely no taxes at all for 5 years despite $30 billion in profits. $0 taxes, $30 billion profit.
This is the same thing that the US does to dual nationals - a US/UK dual citizen working in the UK will pay income tax both to the UK and to the US, because the US thinks they're entitled to taxes on money made abroad.
Does said US citizen get to hold his US passport? Does he get to use US Embassies? Will he be rescued by the US military if kidnapped in Iraq? All that costs money. And the guy gets to deduct from his US tax bill anything paid in the UK anyways.
The reality here is that what should change is the US's policy of taxing all money everywhere, whether or not it ever had anything to do with the US.
As long as it has nothing to do with the US.. I agree the US shouldn't tax it. Last time I drove through Cupertino though, I'm pretty sure I saw a giant Apple logo behind a bunch of people carrying Apple Ids. At least one of Apple's Irish subsidiaries has zero employees though.

Re:Communism
I agree. Recent data by Oxfam confirm that Marx was absolutely right:
http://www.ibtimes.com/richest...He was wrong on one issue only: the forecast that workers would soon unite and lead uprisings everywhere. It has happened only 2-3 times. Unfortunately many people are just too stupid. Brainwashing themselves with trashy reality shows and eating junk hamburgers and fries is enough for them. And that's also why your comment was voted down, and probably mine will be too. Not that this would modify the truth anyways.

Re:The religion of peace
Queue up people claiming that he was just f**** in the head, not Christian
First cab off the rank. Anders Breivik did not identify himself as a Christian in the sense that he was a follower of Christ but merely a 'cultural Christian'. His motivation was to protect 'Christian Europe', not to protect Christianity or Jesus. In fact he was quite scathing of religion in general saying "Religion is a crutch for many weak people and many embrace religion for self serving reasons as a source for drawing mental strength". [1]
It's still too early to say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that the guys who carried out the recent attacks in France are doing so because they believed it is the 'will of Allah', the prophet 'commands it' etc etc.
A second important distinction is that Anders Breivik, even if he wanted to, could not justify his actions based on what Jesus or his disciples taught. Islamic extremists can and do quote directly from the words of Mohammad to justified their violent actions.

Re:Meh.
Actually this is incorrect. The reported numbers are known deaths. See for example this article, quote
"WHO most recently said it believes the actual Ebola death toll is about three times higher than the roughly 4,900 confirmed or suspected cases. That would bring the number of people killed in the current Ebola outbreak to about 15,000. ".
So yes, tens of thousands have probably died from ebola.

Re:Free from captivity... for how long?
You wouldn’t charge a five-year old with disturbing the peace for throwing a tantrum in public.
Oh really? Tell that to St. Petersburg school officials calling police and officers who arrested 5yr old gold for tantrum, and Salecia Johnson arrested and charged with battery and criminal property destruction for actions during Temper tantrum in 2012.
Anyways.... people who are of diminished capacity and a danger to themselves and others get locked up, just the same as any criminal.

Re:8 years and now you want to code to make money
The good news for you is that at the bottom of the profession is enough money to feed a family and pay off what you fear is a worthless degree.
The problem is that the poster isn't even at the bottom of the ladder. He hasn't stepped on even the first rung. And pay at the bottom won't pay your bills. Not when you're competing with everyone else who finds themselves in the same situation - new to the field, no practical experience, etc. And even when he gets to the point where he can make an app, the numbers are awful:
Accounting for 47% of app developers, the “have nothings” include the 24% of app developers – who are interested in making money, it should be noted – who make nothing at all.
Meanwhile, 23% make something, but it’s under $100 per month
and this
How Do You Make Money When Less Than 1% Of Apps Are 'Financially Successful'
and this
There is no shortage of stories about lone developers who made an app for the iPhone or iPad and had runaway success. But in the real world, the majority of app makers struggle to break even, according to a recent survey by marketing firm App Promo. Though the survey's methodology is a bit on the light side, numerous developers that we spoke to agree that the results -- 59 percent of apps don't break even, and 80 percent of developers can't sustain a business on their apps alone -- are close to accurate.
I'd be shouting "It's a trap!" but I think with these numbers, I don't have to. And the numbers are only going to get worse over time.

Slashdot IS social media, which is why NSA and GCHQ created a fake Slashdot to hack into a Belgian Telecom company.
You dirty terrorists, you! Bad Slashdot! BAD!
I might agree with you there if the fake
/. was Beta clone that was full of Bennett's rambling "articles" interspersed with Nerval's dicevertisiments. On the other hand I also might feel sorry for the terrorists for being exposed to something like that.

Seriously, though, this is beyond belief and beyond the pale. Where do they get these morons? Most of these people are guilty of perjury (at best) and outright conflict of interests and gross violations of basic human rights at worst.
When is this going to stop and when are we going to get rid of these idiots? Where is Senator Franck Church when we need him?

Let me disabuse you of this notion:

And, a money quote from the CNN article below:
"While the United States and several other wealthy countries have been happy to pledge funds, only Cuba and a few nongovernmental organizations are offering what is most needed: medical professionals in the field," the New York Times opined in an editorial.

Re:Climate change is degrading the military
I think you're confusing the US with China, the latter of which did increase its defense budget by 12% (and has for about the last 12 years), and is on track to exceed US defense spending by 2020-2025.

Re:Preferred the Volt ?
Price of 2015 Chevy Volt - $34,345, 60 month loan price per month $587
Price of a Model S - $69,900 , 60 month loan price per month $1,187
Anticpated Price of a Model 3 - $50,000, 60 month loan price per month $855 http://www.ibtimes.com/2017-te...
I think on a commodity product like an automobile, customer retention will be dictated far more by the average wealth of the consumer and less so on brand. Brand makes a difference when price is comparable.
No, its not as simple as comparable. The brand can make a difference when the price is affordable to a particular consumer, even when more expensive.
Using your numbers, fewer potential Volt buyers will settle for a Volt if the Tesla is $855 a month rather then $1,187 a month. GM would experience some loss in customer retention in the scenario you describe. -

Re: Wrong Title
George Zimmerman was a bilingual, self-identified Hispanic (his mother was a Peruvian immigrant and his great grandfather was Afro-Peruvian) and registered Democrat. Hispanic Democrats are generally not a great source of Tea Party followers.
Andrew Joseph Stack III (the "IRS plane guy") left a suicide note raging against the policies of George W. Bush, the FAA, the IRS, the Catholic Church, Bush's TARP bailout and Enron (among others).
His note ended:
The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.
The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed.Once again, pro-communist, anti-capitalist, church hating people who blame George W. Bush for regressive tax policies are not generally considered prime Tea Party material.
Maybe next time, you could read up on the subjects that fill your own diatribes.

Set In The Past
Instead of 900 years in the future, he should have set it in the past. Or at least included dinosaurs. You'd never get in trouble for writing about Dinosaurs... Oops, sorry. Forget about that.
In all seriousness, though, school shootings are a problem. However, I'm much more afraid of my oldest son (who begins middle school in a couple of days) getting in trouble for someone mistaking something he says/does as being a threat against the school than I am afraid that someone will walk into the building and kill a bunch of people. (My oldest is diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and anxiety disorder. He can tend to be clueless about "other meanings" to the things he says or how people might take offense to certain phrases that he means in an innocent manner. Not a good combination with overzealous administrators who are jumping at the slightest whiff of trouble.)
