Re:Artificial shortage = FUD
You can read more about SCEA's official response, which blamed the reduction on the component shortage. Notice, however, that Sony is still sticking to their final fiscal year numbers. I'm pretty sure they would have gotten slammed pretty hard in the stock market if they reduced that estimate. But having the launch shortage will obviously make it harder to "catch up" to those finale estimates. That's why I'm saying an artificial shortage is crazy.

Re:uhm, Okami?
Okami does look like it could be very pretty but I think the things that made it so pretty were probably design decisions and not graphical intensity. I've never played it though so I can't say for sure. All I can do is provide screen shots of both Okami and Gears Of War. In my personal opinion I think that a lot of the North American gamers, myself included, will be thinking that Gears Of War looks better and like a next gen title, and that Okami looks similar to Zelda on the gamecube.

Re:Talking about the wrong company.
Microsoft blew last generation on the RPG front, but this time around, they've got an exclusive arrangement with Sakaguchi, Uematsu, and Amano; with that particular brain trust, well, I think it's hard to say they're not trying... (Note: No, Amano isn't -- I don't *think* -- directly connected with Mistwalker, but there was an article on this very news-service a few days ago mentioning that he's still in close contact with Sakaguchi. Story by 1up or someone, IIRC.)

I've learned a lot from games.
ie.: Manhunt taught me that sneaking up behind an enemy, surprising him with a chokehold then ramming long shards of glass in his eyes works very well.
That knowledge has helped me a lot in recent months.

Re:Talking about the wrong company.
Well I think that a difference between the Xbox and the 360 is that this time around Microsoft is getting a lot of 3rd party support for RPGs for their system - they just haven't been released as early as other titles. Although it's a solitary player on the field, Oblivion was a great RPG, although a bit overwhelming. Bioshock, from Irrational Games, will be coming next year (I believe) and was so impressive that it won IGN's Overall Game of the Show award for E3 '06. I don't know how much stock you put in IGN's reviews, but it is an impressive looking game nonetheless. The 360 will also be seeing more Japanese RPGs come over to the system on the American side. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are being released in Japan, with Blue Dragon set to hit this side of the Atlantic next year as well. A lot of this information can be found at this IGN article actually, with a preview of the upcoming RPGs for the 360: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/716/716474p1.html I've got a 360, an XBox, a PS2, and wouldn't be surprised if I own a PS3 down the line, if the games are there, so I don't consider myself too biased one way or the other. I do love RPGs, though, and I can tell you that I'm really excited about some of these upcoming titles for the 360 - much more so than I ever was about an RPG on the Xbox.

Re:My toddler has the very same problem.
A guy on one of my favorite forums actually claims that his nephew *is* having issues like this:
http://vnboards.ign.com/Message.aspx?topic=9893447 1&brd=5156&start=98934605
Highlights (edited):
My nephew started preschool today :O
According to his teachers...
He knows less in general than all of the other students.
He was the only student to scream and refuse to sleep during nap time. He chose to run around the room yelling and trying to stomp on all the other kids while they were laying down. (seems he thought his classmates were Goombas)
He had all four of his misbehavior strikes used up before lunch time came around.
He kept yelling that he was Mario and he was going to eat mushrooms (He's addicted to the DS Lite I sent to him).
Upon returning home, he literally said "My teacher is a monster. Let's go kill her".
After the first day, the teacher is scheduling a visit to his home to meet his family.
He just turned four.
Now that I think about it he does call his backpack his "turtle shell". That's Mario again.
However, the kid's 4, and he has some seriously fucked up parents -- he'd still have serious behavioral issues, Mario or no. A 14 year old has no such excuse. -
Re:Wii controller
They're definitely not making a controller that will be adaptable to work with every system; they've just revealed the controller for the XBox 360:
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/736/736269p1.html
This leads to the conclusion that there will also be a Wii-specific controller for the Wii; and that makes it quite plausible that, yes, the Wii-mote will be able to hook up to the guitar controller and provide the wireless interface, the motion sensing for "star power", and possibly even the Wii-mote speaker.
This would probably mean that the Wii Guitar Hero controller will actually be cheaper than the other systems' wireless controllers! -
Re:Non FPS Halo games?
Maybe with one of these: http://gear.ign.com/articles/708/708054p1.html

Re:A Universal Controller
According to IGN, the controller will "initially" be wired, whatever that's supposed to mean.
-
Re:but will this game screw me up...
Check out this IGN review... they go into a little bit about the similarities between this and the real thing and that it's really not a bad changeover.

Re:20 Gigabytes?!?
This Interview explains what is taking so much space on the disc.
Consider that even with compression, each of our "levels" (or loaded areas) has more than 300 megs of unique data. And keep in mind that we're also streaming data during level playthroughs. It doesn't take too much level data before you've gone past what can be stored on a dual-layer DVD. And between single player and multiplayer we have a lot of level data (over 40 different large loaded areas) - yes, more than will fit on a dual layer DVD.
So just in compressed level data they are nearly to 12 gig. -
What was that?Run that by me one more time?
Final Fantasy on the DS would be a big step backwards from the PSP, graphics-wise. Not gonna happen for a franchise that always prided itself on pushing the limits of technology.
Funny how that echo rings. Ironically, PSP is the one getting the "spinoff franchise," with a sequal to the sequal of the sequal of Final Fantasy VII coming out. I'm not at all looking forward to it. Final Fantasy III on the DS? YES PLEASE.
You realize, of course, that there IS a confirmed Dragon Quest Game coming out for the Wii, and the 360 has not even the rumor of real Final Fantasy on it. -

Re:Wii....
Final Fantasy is coming to the Wii. Though in the form of Crystal Chronicles, which suffered from GBA connectivity for the Gamecube. Hopefully this version doesn't require four Nintendo DS's and four link cables to play four player.
-
Re:Wii....
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has been announced for the Wii already, see here. It has also been announced for the NintendoDS, along with all of the Final Fantasy remakes that they have previously announced. It seems that Square-Enix is well aware of the potential that the new consoles hold.

Re:Summary is wronger than you thinkThis whole thing seems to be a complete anti-sony beatup. According to IGN:
Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that Sony plans to make GT HD available for the cost of the game disk and instruction manual. This suggests a retail price point of just a few dollars for the first PS3 Gran Turismo game.
To me this sounds like a great way for the game to work.

Re:lower development costs & other bottlenecks
Hair is actually really hard to do. Clothing too. They take a lot of processing power. Bodies have a very small number of joints. Fabric and hair are flexible anywhere, making it a lot harder to model. They're also the kind of thing you're not going to notice 99% of the time while you're playing.
I mentioned this because soft body deformations are one of the hardest things to do right in games. They also feel like they're a huge step behind the kind of leaps we've made in the visual realm. The girls in Fight Night are a perfect example. They have very realistic skinning and great visual effects thoughout the game. But the ring girls hair is floating disturbingly high off their shoulders. It's clear that in one area huge advances have been made, yet in another we're still using technology and techniques that haven't made similar progress.
Your point about the degree of physics one would want in games is quite valid. I was oversimplifying a series of thorny design issues. But the fact is that things you may want to do in games as developers you simply can't from a practical processing standpoint. Things like having liquid dynamics play a role in the game... Say you've got a gun that can absorb any kind of liquid in a game and spray it back out. And say that when Water and Plastic combine, they form a series of hard surfaces. And maybe molten lava digs straight through plastic. You could make an entire game out of the liquid dynamics of the situation. Add in maybe one or two other forms of liquid, and you'd have tons of interesting interactions. But you can't do that because realistic water with volume is too expensive to model. -

GC version: IGN quotes Miyamoto differently from
Kotaku says that this will even be true in the GameCube version of Princess, to avoid confusion.
From IGN,When asked why Link was left-handed in the Wii version of Twilight Princess, Miyamoto had this to say:
"Although Link is [traditionally] left-handed, at E3 we noticed people seemed to be using the right Wii controller to swing his sword. That's why we decided to make Link right-handed. The interesting this is, on the GameCube Link is still left-handed; because of the mirror mode the game map is reversed." -

Re:Ha!
Keep in mind that the media is virtually irrelevant. For example, a PC game that comes on a couple of CDs could still be rendered at multiple high resolutions. The only real advantage of Blu-ray in this area would be its ability to store more static 1080p content.
While what you say is true, there is another advantage of Blu-ray, no(?) disc swapping. One thing to consider is that games on a PC get installed to a hard drive so they can come on multiple CDs and you only have to swap during the initial install. Unfortuntely, The Xbox 360 didn't put a hard drive in every unit so swapping discs at some point will come into play. If done right it won't be bad though, it didn't bother me on Resident Evil 4 for the Gamecube. While I'm no PS3 fanboy, I do love larger capacity media and I think at some point it will be a big advantage for the PS3. Games are likely to just get bigger and bigger with more and more detail. Resistance: Fall of Man would take three DVD-9s to put on another system with how much space they are already using (could probably be knocked down to two though.)
Quote from Ted Price (Insomniac Games) "The second topic that has been surfacing a lot lately is our support of Blu-ray as a medium. Yes it is true - we are currently using more than 20 gigs. And yes, we do compress our level data. The fact that we store so much on disc is actually not that surprising when you look at the numbers. Consider that even with compression, each of our "levels" (or loaded areas) has more than 300 megs of unique data. And keep in mind that we're also streaming data during level playthroughs. And between single player and multiplayer we have a lot of level data (over 40 different large loaded areas) - yes, more than will fit on a dual layer DVD. We also include a lot of data in the form of game movies in both HD and PAL formats, high quality audio streams for all supported languages and some of those Insomniac "extras" that our fans have come to expect. I realize that some people will still be skeptical unless we provide an actual layout of the disc. But for now I wanted to give you some better info." -
Re:None of them
GDC isn't E3 though; E3 is for journalists first and foremost. Big COME LOOK AT OUR SHIT demo show where everyone spends 25% of the game development time and budget making a demo for 3 days, wasting resources.
GDC is for GAME DEVELOPERS. There are as many lectures and talks and so on which serve the purposes of mapping out the course of game development as there are silly little demos on games. Journalists come in because they would throw a fit if it was totally closed, but also because they offer some good input on games - and how to get good review scores of course.. I think Matt Cassamasinansansaisanas from IGN made a good blog post on this subject;

The Golden Age or the Revolution? When it comes to media, I'll take a revolution over a golden age any day.
What I mean by that is there are no new genre defining games coming out anymore. Maybe it's because we've reached hardware & software limitations or maybe it's because no one is willing to risk it with so many popularized genres out there to make a buck off of.
But at the end of the day, there are more different games out there than ever before, from the oh-so-pretty Oblivion to Guitar Hero to Dwarf Fortress.
This is true and I applaud games like Guitar Hero or even Um Jammer Lammy ... although I've never played Dwarf Fortress or Oblivion, Oblivion seems like a new twist on a way too common engine. Unfortunately, the makers of Guitar Hero are already making a Guitar Hero 2. How many before they channel their resources and creativity on another concept? I think franchises stifle creativity -- yes, even our beloved franchises like Final Fantasy & Legend of Zelda.
One would think (or hope) that with internet connections for consoles and the MMORPG world conquered by World of Warcraft that we would be seeing a lot of innovation. Unfortunately, I'm beginning to see less and less innovation and a whole lot more 'safety' games. Indeed, this is a golden age ... but if I visit IGN and search for Madden, it returns 115 results. Yes, I know it's been on every console and PC since the dawn of games ... but, for Christ's sake, when will it die? There is a proper time to lay a game to rest. I'm very much convinced that EA relies mainly on disposable games and sequels for 95% of their profits. Golden age indeed! -
There are lots of 3rd party Xbox controllers
here. Nintendo's tech is new and patented. You won't see third party controllers, or if you do they'll be priced the same as the offical Nintendo one (or more). So yeah, Sony and Microsoft gamepads aren't cheap, but if you just need a cheap pad for a few hours of Multiplayer, you can get one (eventually).

Re:It costs a Wii bit too much
As I understand it the processor on the Wii is made by IBM and is 800Mhz or less
Actually, all we know about the Wii's GPU (code name Hollywood) and CPU (code name broadway) is that they're custom built processors manufactured using a 90nm SOI CMOS process; the process is the same process which was used on the PowePC 970 processors (the G5) which came in single and dual core configurations and ran between 1.5GHz and 2.5GHz. We have heard from ATI that the graphics demonstrated at E3 were just "The tip of the iceburg".
Recently, in an interview with UBIsoft about RedSteel, it was reported that UBIsoft did not recieve Wii hardware until 2 months before E3 and they did not have time to complete the artistic upgrades before the demo had to be ready for testing (most developers require 4-6 weeks of testing a demo prior to E3); this meant that the E3 demo was more representative of what was running on Gamecube hardware than what the Wii can do. Now, I'm not arguing that the Wii is a technological marvel but it is not incapable of adequate graphics ( http://media.wii.ign.com/media/821/821973/img_3914 539.html ),
The one thing I will say about your "under 800MHz remark" is that I know for a fact that EBgames was publishing the fake IGN specs and received a nice visit from Nintendo's laywer; now they publish the same specs Nintendo does. Matt from IGN was either lying or believed a lie. -
oh .. but we will have them!
FTFA:
There are so many people out there that love to buy the new Madden release or the latest Final Fantasy sequel that it's difficult to believe that Nintendo can change their mind or be a success without them.
Ummm .. but we will have them. (or in the case of FF, we probably will have them. Square-Enix is in a love fest with nintendo these days)
Madden is coming to the Wii. And in fact, will probably be the first (American) football game I buy since like '98. After reading that developer interview over at IGN, I'm quite excited about play this game! It's a very long read, but it sounds like it'll be a lot easier to play. Running with the ball, I'll be able to straight arm a guy to my left, and at the same time, juke to the right, and it'll be as easy as flicking my wrist. Something we all probably do already when playing video games!!! -
Re:You've Come A Long Way Baby
Try a Mario Sunshine screenshot that isn't all blurry and ugly and you don't really have much different left. Also Mario Galaxy uses different shading and emphasis the edges a lot, which gives the pictures some extra brillance, but that isn't really a sign of much improved power.
When you compare Link you have to take into account that SmashBrosMelee was a launch title for the console, current generation Gamecube games do look quite a bit better, compare it for example with Twilight Princess on the Gamecube, again, no big difference left.
I would be happy to be proven wrong, but so far it simply looks like Wii will have only minimally more power then the Gamecube. None of the Wii games so far looked like it couldn't have been done in the current generation. That doesn't mean they are ugly, Zelda looks great, but for a next generation console it really is quite a disapointment, especially for the price.
-
Re:You've Come A Long Way Baby
Why didn't you use a game that actually demonstrated the difference between the Wii and Gamecube; if I wanted to I could go get images of Gun, King Kong, Tiger Woods, or NBA 2006 for the XBox 360 which looked worse than the XBox versions.
Try these screenshots:

The Wii may not be in the same league as the XBox 360 and the PS3 but it is still a very powerful system. A fair comparison would be that:
Gamecube = N64
PS3 and XBox 360 = XBox/Gamecube
Wii = Dreamcast -

The Wii may not be in the same league as the XBox 360 and the PS3 but it is still a very powerful system. A fair comparison would be that:
Gamecube = N64
PS3 and XBox 360 = XBox/Gamecube
Wii = Dreamcast -
Re:You've Come A Long Way Baby
Why didn't you use a game that actually demonstrated the difference between the Wii and Gamecube; if I wanted to I could go get images of Gun, King Kong, Tiger Woods, or NBA 2006 for the XBox 360 which looked worse than the XBox versions.

Re:Wiiiiii!
Nobody is berating Sony/MS for region locking, but then they never claimed that they'd do anything else. Nintendo, on the other hand, seemed to be doing pretty well in the media wars, and now they've gone and shot themselves in the foot.
Really now? So what exactly is THIS supposed to have ment? Sony is JUST as full of hot air as Nintendo is, but in Nintendo's case, it seems like it was an honest mistake made by a single person, as opposed to a mindful shift made during design. If the Wii was never region free in the first place, and no one had ever said anything about it, would we be complaining as loudly? I do admit that Nintendo should have kept their mouthes shut in this regard, or at least made it a little more low key (having someone from the UK section basically say "We are region-locked" is not exactly buttering it for our eventual forced consumption, and I think this was a mistake.
It doesn't matter: people who find this out and actually know what it means aren't going to refuse to buy a Wii on these grounds, and people who don't know what it means won't care anyway. I don't see Nintendo losing as many sales over this as I see Sony losing sales over their decision to only ship 500k units worldwide at launch, or their slaping Europe in the face. -
Re:You've Come A Long Way Baby
How is $250 expensive? It's $150 less than the version everyone gets of a console already out for a year.
The Wii is also a heck of a lot less powerfull then the other nextgen consoles. You have to compare the Wii with the Gamecube and if you do that you will find that its $150 more expensive then the Gamecube, doesn't look so sexy anymore. And when it comes to how much the Wii is more powerfull then the gamecube, lets just look at the screenshots of Gamecube and Wii, see the difference? I don't.
The controllers are comparable to controllers on the market.
Except that they cost almost twice as much, oh and they are also not compatible with all the games on the console, so you have to get additional classic controllers to play all the games the console has to offer.
The people that were disappointed, it seems, weren't thinking realistically.
Well, some of us hoped that Nintendo would offer the console at a fair price and not try to squezze every cent out of the consumers just because the PS3 is totatly out of reach for many.

I wouldn't trust Nintendo UK.
They're always last to hear the news. I trust Perrin Kaplan over David Yarnton.
They're region loocked: http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/732/732982p1.html
They're not region locked: http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/732/732748p1.html

Re:econ 101
Well, for me Wii Sports is a disincentive - For a parent it's going to be different. Ignoring everything else and looking at the Wii Sports game - if the child is under 10 the parent will get the Wii if the child is over 12 the parent won't.
Any teen or adult is going to be far more impressed by a 360 game such as 99Nights
99N (NNN?) is probably a bit too violent for the preteen market but there is nothing stopping Microsoft giving a game like Kameo free with the Core 360. That's going to further marginalize the Wii.
This senario supposes that the store is promoting the "free" game and not something like WarioWare of Raving Rabbits. They can also promote more grown-up (FPS) games, but Wii Sports just looks bad. And it's apparently realy easy.

I'm lost.
Ok, I'm really a bit lost. This seems to directly conflict with an article stating that Wii titles are to be region-encoded.
