Anyway my take on the headline is that girls are less likely to be one of the xbox-rockin beer-chugging football broes that play games casually and ruin the Male team's hardcore percentage.

Re:OS X needs VLC
Let me describe how it works in Windows 7 as my request may not be clear. From my reading on the topic, I simply don't think it's possible from the GUI.
Windows Explorer has a "Homegroup" and a "Network" tab which is automatically populated with available networked machines. When I resume my laptop from standby, within about 5 seconds I see "Jason (Jason-Laptop) pop up in the Homegroup and Network section.
See an example below:
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/322/homegroup.png
In addition, I can aggregate folders with the same type of data into a single "Library". For example I have a Television and a Movie library on my desktop. The former contains 3 folders spanning 3 hard drives while the latter contains 2 folders spanning 2 hard drives. Rather than showing as Television1, Television2, Television3, Windows 7 merely shows the single library. If you drag a file to the library, it copies to the default directory (specified when you create the library). I doubt this is supported in any OS other than Win 7.

OT: Can someone verify BP's favicon?
Completely off-topic, but what the hell, it was an odd piece to read. For me, in Chrome, Bruce's website has a very similar favicon to Microsoft. See:
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8692/perens.jpg
Of course, it's probably a bug as I can't verify this in another browser (doesn't display). If it is, is a nice throwback to the good old days... I remember when it used to be a horrible experience to try and get IE4/5 (?) to flush a cached favicon in a bookmark (favourite). Those were the days...

Re:Google
You're the first person to ever take me up on trying to prove a difference in search result quality rather than just saying how rubbish Bing is. So kudos for that. :)
However, there's something very wrong here. Your Bing results don't match up with what I get at all. Here . As you can see, the first couple of links in Bing are offers to buy a Wii on Amazon, but that's just the different location of ads in Bing v. Goodle and easily distinguishable. In the links proper, I see the wiibrew.org Main page that you said was the best result, immediately followed by the Wikipedia page which you said was the second result. I see no sign of the Spanish and German "scam" sites.
So we have a few possibilities. One is that you are getting different search results, perhaps due to personal settings or being located in a different country. Another is that you are making things up and relying on Slashdot's tendency to believe anything it reads. For politeness sake, and because you sound rational, I'd prefer not to suggest this possibility. Thirdly, MS Bing admins are watching the story on Slashdot and updating things super fast.
I suppose the last is possible, do you want to try refreshing? Failing that, what country are you in and do you have any particular preferences set for Bing? There has to be a reason why we get different search results. -
Comparison Between 2004 and 2009 Images
I took the 2004 UDF image and rotated/cropped as needed to match with the 2009 UDF image so you can switch between the two and compare the differences.
The new image uses infrared versus the visible light filters from the 2004 image. The resolution may not differ much between the two images, but the infrared will pick up deeper objects that we missed with the visible light filters. However the visible light image tends to pick up more detail such as in the spiral galaxy in the middle-left. That galaxy is known as UDF 7556 and what you see is how it was 6.1 billion years after the big bang.
This stuff is so cool.

Re:Demonstrates jack!
As said in some posts above, the game is actually rendered in 3D but at a fixed angle to make it appear to be a 2D platformer. Therefore, it does show off the emulator prowess very much although not the best example. You should see Wind Waker when it's upscaled and that's just a gamecube game:
http://www.dolphin-emu.com/images/photoalbum/album_1/win.jpg
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/7384/windwaker1280x9608xqcsawx8.jpgPersonally I think the similarities between the Gamecube and Wii is what made it so easy to emulate compared to other systems where it was a completely different architecture than the previous generation. This is clearly why the gamecube and Wii emulation are being developed alongside eachother and compatibility appears to be similar for both systems.

Re:Second Flamebait
Ethanol-fueled (the guy who posted the original inflamatory statement) posting here.
Apparently there are a lot of his kind on Slashdot, because the post was enough to get me banned. This is the screenshot of what I saw when I came back from my morning jog.
I would usually pay no mind and just continue to lurk, but I think it's important that everybody knows that, after all of the race-bait trolling myself and others have done, the one thing that gets me banned is persecuting the poor oppressed "minority" white christians! Yes, that's right. The same people who complained about me have proven the article's point! The religious influence on Slashdot undermines its credibility as the foremost science and technology website. The reason why is left as an exercise to the reader.
Funny thing is - I'm part Scots-Irish, part Hispanic/Native American. That moron had the gall to accuse me of "racial slurs" because I said the word "Mick"?! Hey, bub! It ain't the 19th century anymore! Anyway, I mentioned hicks and micks, but no Texans or Oklahomans complained!

Re:The closed circle
Blender doesn't allow you to do anything unless you spend a few hours just configuring things and doing tutorials, which is a pain in the ass compared to 3D studio max (yes, you get what you pay for, 3DS Max is not cheap).
Yes, the money makes the software to be such that it is 100% intuitive and not the UI. We all know that 3D Studio Max is very expensive and thats why it is 100% intuitive so every new users can do same kind effects as we see on the movies when they just pay the license. It is just so awesome that my 80 year old grandmother did better effects to her family movies than what we all have seen on movies like Titanic, Matrix, Final Fantasy and so on. Too bad that the movie studios are so stupid that they do not use 3D Studio Max because it just allows you to create everything so easily without studying and learning first the 3D modeling.
And the blender UI... it really is just so terrible. You see that you can configure it how you want it and how you want it to be on every project. It is just so awful that you need different kind UI with different set of tools for different kind modelings. We really should get a samekind UI what MS copied to Office and started to call them as "Ribbon". Yeah, the Blender would be MUCH easier by that way. No wait... the ribbon is so easy but why does 3D Studio Max have the old 80's looking UI then? Hmm... wonder just why...
But really. When it comes to UI's. The most powerfull UI is not the default. Good defaults just makes the learning easier. But it does not mean that the using the application is easier. The Blender is not designed for new comers, to be a simple tool. It is designed for powerusers who knows what they need and they can get the UI to adapt their demands. Same thing is with GIMP. You can just simply change the UI to such what you like to do. The GIMP has almost everything what any PS user needs to get things done. But problem is that it is not the Adobe Photoshop but GIMP and problem is caused from attitude about it because by default it is not similar with GIMP.
Question is only about do you know the power of GIMP/Blender UI or not. Seems you have never even tried to solve problems. But you just made up your mind and you try to stick with it as long as possible. You believe the problem is on GIMP. But you do not accept to notice the problem is you. For those new users who comes to Linux and have used someway PS. I configure GIMP look more like this http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/9131/gimpps.jpg That is not a perfect because I use myself different kind UI what fits my needs better. But I know it can be configured pretty close one to PS. And they do not usually miss anything and actually they like GIMP because it teach them the basic thinking how to do manipulate photos and not just using automatic filters getting similar looking results every time.

Re:The closed circle
I've never modeled something with more than 50 polygons before. Blender was the first thing to let me make a complete complex model*, and I did it with not very much outside help.
It took me a week to figure even the basics of Maya and 3D-Studio Max.
I don't accept your argument against Blender, by my very own experience of that learning process.
* - Modeled 1016 polygons, if you include edge loops for the smoothing/subsurface modifiers. The "actual" mesh is only 400 or so.

If a 'smoking exclusion' was not in the contract, then they lied to you when they sold the contract, plain and simple.
Yes, because no one would assume "covered in tar" would fall under a general abuse clause.

Re:A pixel is not a little square
Thank you. By far the best post in this discussion.
If you want to simulate a CRT with a larger stripe pitch, you can double the LCD pixel pitch (at the expense of reversed color order) or quadruple it, but this is a fairly limited set of options. The real tricky part is getting the beam profile right and ideally one would want an LCD with even higher vertical resolution than is currently available.
I actually took a shot at this problem a while ago. I use Lanczos scaling to stretch the scanlines horizontally to the output resolution. Then (after applying a CRT gamma) I give the beam a Gaussian profile, with increased width (blooming) when it is brighter. This image has a two pixel aperture grille pattern overlaid.
The code here is far from real-time, but I also created a GLSL shader for SDLMAME which does run real-time with slightly reduced quality.

I wasn't affected, fortunately, and followed it RT
I live in Rio Grande do Sul, in a region where we have smaller power dams that supply more than enough energy for us to keep running without Itaipu, and I must say it was quite interesting to follow everything from here in real time. I was chatting with a friend of mine from Rio de Janeiro, and we were about to play some Mario Kart online, when suddently she sends me an SMS in 22:14 telling me "You're not gonna believe it, but the entire city of Rio de Janeiro has no energy. Even the Cristo Redentor doesn't have any light, and I've never seen that happen in my entire life!". A few minutes later she comes back online using her notebook and a 3G modem, retwitted the infos I sent her to her friends, and following my suggestion took a couple of pictures of what she was (un)able to see.
I then called her and she proceeded to tell me about how chaotic things were on the streets, that basically the traffic was jammed, all buildings nearby had people locked inside elevators and she could hear the cries for help, and until 5 minutes after the blackout all cellphone lines were jammed too. I then kept following the news on portal websites and Twitter and reported back to her in real time to let her know what was happening and how big things where, although she had already contacted friends throughout the country and kind of knew the places that were online and the ones that weren't.
I must say it was quite an experience to follow things in real time and inform someone right there about it, and I guess she was "thrilled" about it too, even though she's afraid of the dark.

Re:No
House of the Dead: Overkill is an original game in the House of the Dead series. Also, your logic for what "counts" and what doesn't seems completely arbitrary to me. If I really wanted to play Onechanbara for whatever reason, I'd probably go with the superior Wii game(at least, according to Metacritic), the same applies to the games you listed as 'ports'. Especially in the case of Resident Evil 4, which makes playing the next game in the series on 360 feel like a major step backwards.
If he wants to rule out awesome games for having colors other than brown, then that's his problem - though I must say, when I think cutesy games, the first thing that comes to mind is Monster Hunter 3.

P.S. If you want to see where the next generation of consoles are headed, simply look at Crysis on a maxed out Rig.
Current Generation PCs can still barely run the game at 1600p with 30fps, personally I predict the next generation consoles to have equivalent power to this.

Re:This problem has been solved on my desktop
Or I use virtual desktops basically for the same thing
I think you hit my soft spot right there.
I've been using Linux for a few years (since 2002-ish) and I really like XFCE. It's virtual desktop support is great. My favorite part is the mouse resistance on the edge of the screen to switch to the next screen.
All you need to do is drag the mouse to the edge of the screen, and give it a nice push. Depending on how you have your virtual desktops arranged, I have two rows of 4, so a total of 8 virtual desktops, so they are arranged in a grid like so:
[1][2][3][4]
[5][6][7][8]1: Work Stuff (usually a web browser, file browser and text editor)
2: Usually a terminal and sometimes graphics stuff.
3&4: "Extra Work Stuff", VirtualBox and a terminal usually sit somewhere on these two.
5: Music and Media
6: "General Stuff" (on #6 right now) Usually a web browser(firefox), aMSN and E-mail (Thunderbird)
7&8: "Extra General Stuff" When I'm compiling things they usually sit on one of these two. Sometimes I use 7 to find a document quick when I need to show it to someone (easier to switch to 7 than to minimize stuff and open a folder)And to top it off, here's a screenshot!
