On a lighter note The Ambassador, (and I'm not totally convinced this is a true documentary, although I've not seen anyone claim it's fake) - Danish journalist with the approach of Borat goes to the Central African Republic to expose the blood diamond trade. This is a documentary unlike others for that the maker is possibly crazier than the absurdities he finds and it is exceptionally funny. (Red Chapel by the same guy is not as great, but might be available at your local netflix and well worth the watch).

If you're not able to talk about such things, then the belief in them doesn't go away..it just goes underground, and festers.....and then they never get exposed to other points of view.

The free exchange of ideas, allows for beliefs to be put forth and discussed, and in such discussion, the better ones stay and the others fade.

They fade NOT because they are shouted down, or not allowed to be expressed, but by thoughtful conversation and making valid points to address the weaknesses of the weaker argument.

I was just watching an interesting video yesterday on Amazon Prime Can We Take A Joke" , and it really puts an interesting light on what's happening on today's campuses.

Its interesting how in the past, saw with Lenny Bruce...that is was the far Right that had him arrested and shut down.

It was the more liberal colleges that pushed the greatest back then, IMHO, for true free speech...even controversial speech.

And now today...PC and such, are closing down speech again, but this time, instead of the right pushing it...it is the left.

I would posit the best way to get bad speech out of the way, it to allow it to be spoken, and don't shout it down, but speak against it and debate it.

Surely the best side will win on merit?

Let's not forget about impossible physics as part of the plot.

Damned straight! It pissed me off that Gravity (2013) had characters floating in orbit, waiting to be impacted by debris in the same orbit! Surely if the debris was travelling at a high enough velocity to overtake and smash into them, it would be orbiting at a different altitude.

This seems to be what studios have forgotten. Not every movie needs to be a mega blockbuster, or Oscar winner. There can just be good movies that will never be the next Shawshank Redemption but we need more good movies like Dr. Strangelove. Movies like Gattaca, The Usual Suspects, Blazing Saddles, Heat, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, are all good movies and tell a good story. People do like to think movies were better before but that is because we have forgotten about the huge number of shitty old movies that were made. In looking at what films came out the same year as Laurence of Arabia (looks to be a surprisingly good year for movies) there are a few others I recognize like Dr. No, The Manchurian Candidate, How the West Was Won, Lolita, and To Kill a Mockingbird, but most I have never heard of.

Given that something either critically acclaimed, and well watched by many people, has come out in pretty much every genre available this year alone, maybe the reason you don't think anything is "worth watching" is because you're a bore who doesn't like movies...

I cant speak for Skuld-Chan, but here's my take on that bit of your comment.

Am I a 'bore who doesn't like movies'?, well, I've quite a collection of DVDs etc ranging from old silent films, through B movies, French Noir, SF, Horror, Comedy, animation etc. bloody. etc to current popular releases, and, yes, I'll occasionally still go to the Cinema to watch some of these films (but not the local cinema, as it's an abomination, had it been designed/built a bit better, and it showed a better selection of current releases I'd go to the cinema more often), maybe I do love them, maybe I don't...I can go for months without watching anything, and I'm not claiming some sort of 'refined' sense of taste here (otherwise I'd have never have gone to see 'The Phantom Menace' in the cinema, and things like the 'Chucky' films wouldn't have a place in my collection..), but you will eventually get to the point where you realise

and that films such as 'Guardians of the Galaxy' are what they are, throwaway items, entertaining, but which may not be worth revisiting to watch again in a few months time, let alone a few years/decades later.

As an example of the perils of populism, for a fun evening set up a marathon of 'Bollywood' films (hey, they're popular!), and see how many you get through alive..and yes, for reasons too tedious to get into here, I'm partial to some of the Mythological ones so have some of them in my collection as well.

If it may also help you at this point, I'm not USian, not a 'millenial', your base cultural references != my base cultural references, I may understand a few number of yours thanks to decades of US global 'Cultural Imperialism', however that doesn't mean I necessarily share them.

This is driving the push towards re-hashing "proven" formats, plots and approaches. This is reducing the willingness of studios to be a little bit more edgy, or take a chance with some slightly different material. In fact, here's a little test for you... Think back to your favourite (and original) movies from, say, the 1990s, i.e. say roughly 15-25 years ago. Now ask yourself how many of these would actually be green-lit and made today, given what has happened with film studios.

Just perusing the top 50, there are plenty of examples of films that would be highly unlikely to be made today. The single biggest issue with modern cinema is that, for quite some time now, maximising profit has come before the provision of satisfying content. Modern cinema has become the equivalent of junk food. Forget any idea of fine dining - the concepts of subtlety or art have been conveniently swept away in favour of the all-conquering bottom line.

I suggest a million dollar reward to find the bastards, and then send the SAS around.

I thought the story was click-bait for a British TV series on Sky (and Amazon) called Fortitude. Totally same idea, except in the show the reindeer is a mammoth, and instead of anthrax it's larvae from an ice-age insect that infect people's brains. Coincidence?

The three friends agree that it's a foolproof scam, and decide to put it in motion the following day before Samir and Michael are let go for good. They also agree not to tell anyone else, even though Lawrence has heard all the details of the plan through the apartment wall. Peter assures Samir and Michael that "he's cool."

The next morning Peter checks the balance in the illicit penny-pinching scam account and finds it is a shocking $305,326.13! The three friends meet, and Michael chalks the glitch up to a mundane detail that he's possibly overlooked.
