Re: Help Bury!
Can Ted McGinley help?

Re: Bringing down others...
Ask Ted McGinley.
http://www.jumptheshark.com/forum/Ted-Mcginley/22
"Ted is the patron saint of shark jumping. Chances are that if Ted is anywhere near your cast, consider the show on the downward spiral. That's not to take away from Ted's fine acting skills. Consensus here enjoys Ted more on the big screen (Revenge of the Nerds) than on our sets. Then again, we wouldn't have a patron saint...thanks Ted!" -
Adam's resume...
Adam Savage: I worked on Star Wars Episodes I and II, on the Matrix films, on AI and Terminator 3;
Hang on. Didn't those movies suck? Maybe Adam is the film equivalent of Ted McGinley?
-
That's fine
I'd rather see the show go out on a high note than to jump the shark. Two of my favorite shows are Seinfeld and The Simpsons. Seinfeld went out at the top, so whenever I catch a rerun of it, I can be sure I'll enjoy it. With The Simpsons, I usually avoid the reruns because at this point there are more bad episodes than good ones. I hope I'll be able to enjoy reruns of Battlestar Galactica for a long time to come.

Linux in Space
I guess this means Linux has finally Jumped the Shark?
I think it is pretty much a universally accepted fact making something "In Space" is pretty much an undeniable jump the shark moment. -
Re:Better to burn out or fade away?
So Ben Browder is the Ted McGinley of Sci-Fi?
-
Is that a surprise to you? :-/*
Apparently you haven't been on Slashdot too long. There's not much fact here; just entertainment for fanboys of LUNIX...err, Linux and The Simpsons.
If you're looking for facts, turn to USA Today. If you're looking at venting some immature prepubescent frustration, come to Slashdot. You'll be welcomed with open arms.

We've Seen This Guy Before
Let's see...
- Computer's defunct video card business
- 3DO's failed game consoles
- chip startup that screwed up a deal with Nintendo
- the never successful WebTV
- Microsoft's canceled Ultimate TV satellite TV recorder
Is it just me, or does this guy sound like the Ted McGinley of the tech industry?

Re:Hollywood's fascination with prequels
Did anyone else watch that and NOT think "Bobby Ewing in the shower?"
That being said, if they pull it off, it'll be a monumental acheivement. -
Jump the shark
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_the_shark and http://jumptheshark.com/
It originally referred to an episode in "Happy Days" where the lead character literally ski-jumps over a shark. It's now become slang for any pointless, spectacular, diversion/stunt by a TV show or company (or whatever) that has run out of ideas, is on its way down, and can only retain public attention via these stupid stunts. -
Given the subject matter...
Perhaps a better animal-based metaphor for stunts over plotlines would be "LOTR has slid down the trunk"
-
jump the shark
I think TV Star Wars just jumped the shark before it even started...
-
Peaked? Not yet...
...not until Sergey Brin and Larry Page jump over a shark tank on their motorcycles... After that there'll be a cute but irritating cousin who comes to live with them, and after that, they all move to LA and take up professional surfing and crimefighting.
THEN it's all over. Or at least has jumped the shark... Same thing. -
Re:Jumping the Shark

Re:Just like TOS
It's not like they hired Ted McGinley. There are actors that can doom a series, but Scott isn't one of them.
-
Re:I don't think so
4. Jumping the Shark (Malcolm in the Middle, Will and Grace)
5. The thing everyone waited for happened (Cheers, Moonlighting, soon will happen to Lost and Desperate Hosuewives)
These are usually considered to be the same thing. In fact, at http://www.jumptheshark.com/, Character A and Character B Finally Having Sex After Six Seasons Of The Fans Wanting It To Happen is one of the biggest reasons a show jumps the shark.
I guess for that matter, changes in the cast can cause a show to jump the shark as well. Lots of people felt that Happy Days (the original shark-jumper) jumped the shark upon losing Richie Cunningham to the void.

Re:All That Glitters
You can infer all you want. But jumping the shark means
"A defining moment when you know that your favorite television show has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on... it's all downhill. Some call it the climax. We call it jumping the shark."
That expression was taken from the episode of _Happy Days_ when Fonzie jumped a shark on a "motorcycle". As someone who watched that episode in original broadcast, and have seen many other things, least among them TV shows, jump the shark, I can tell you that the sharkjump is the climax. After that, it's all downhill. Any subsequent event of any importance would be something other than "downhill", and destroy the metaphor. Jumping the shark is taking something to its limit - not a failure to live up to the limit. -
Re:YES!
Browder coming onto the show has nothing to do with "jumping the shark" unless the show goes downhill after that.
I'm intererested to see if Browder and Black's characters are going to be anything like Crichton and Sun (i.e., how much on Farscape was acting and how much was personality).

Re:Actually
The Hallmark Channel really went downhill once they stopped showing "Hart to Hart"
Yeah, I hear what you're saying -- I can still get my Robert Wagner fix whenever I want by popping in an Austin Powers DVD. But what about Stefanie Powers?? -
I'll go one step further...I'd say that both individuals and entire development studios should grab more recognition for their creations. If you browse Mobygames, games are listed by publisher:
- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault by Electronic Arts
- Star Wars Battlefront by Lucasarts
- Asheron's Call by Microsoft
- Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay by Vivendi
- ...etc...
What seems clear to me is that middlebrow games criticism cannot function without some reference to authors: a critic needs to know who to blame or praise, how to assign and imagine intentionality, how to accessibly discuss the intertextual relations between games.
The gaming public does, indeed, seem to care who's recognized for a title. Development studios should be lauded for their successes, just as book authors are. To wit, we'll be self-publishing our next title. I'll personally bear responsibility for the game, whether it unleashes a horrible plague upon the world, or becomes a hit.
I'm sorta hoping for the latter.

Brilliant!
Showing a simulation of a sport with consistently low ratings on a channel with consistently low ratings. It's brilliant! If Ted McGinley was the host, they'd when an Emmy for sure.

Re: what star trek needs
Sadly, the IRA had mostly shuttered their doors by 2000-2001. So, by the time that Star Trek: ENT was being plotted out, me and my pals had long since been reduced to sending our ill-gotten petrodollars to the likes of ETA.
(And yes, I suppose we could have supported "The Real IRA" but, quite frankly, their name is too ridiculous to even be worthy of consideration. Plus, it brings back too many memories of "The Real Ghostbusters") -
Re:"Surfboards?"
And then Anakin Skywalker will jump over some sort of alien lava shark on his surfboard....

Re: "Dismayed" is a bit strong.
It describes that point when the show takes a dramatic turn downward....
There is a website devoted to the concept. They define it as that point when the show is at its peak, but it seems to be used as I defined it above.
Sounds much like climbing Kilimanjaro then: most of it's up until you reach the very, very top, and then it tends to slope away rather sharply. -
Re: "Dismayed" is a bit strong. It describes that point when the show takes a dramatic turn downward. This usually occurs when a show has gone stale and they add extra characters to try to get new life out of it.

"Dismayed" is a bit strong.
Science fiction fans may have be dismayed when they learnt that Firefly was being cancelled, but I buy the DVDs of Andromeda here in Australia and I'm far from dismayed. Not saying I know when it jumped the shark, but I almost stopped buying it at DVD 4.6.

The vast majority of those who voted believe that the Simpsons has yet to jump the shark.

Re:Aren't they doing that this season?
For those who don't know about this phenomenon, "jumping the shark" is a term a guy coined to describe when a TV show (or anything for that matter) has started to go downhill. It comes from Happy Days, when Fonzie jumped a shark on water skis. It was made up to be a scary and serious episode, but was clearly very very lame. After that, the show was never the same. See jumptheshark.com for more info.
For someone who even points to the webbage, you seem to be a little misguided. Fonzie jumping the shark was not 'very very lame', but when the show clearly reached its peak and could never achieve anything better than that moment, and it is from there that everything goes downhill.
'Jumping the shark' is when something has reached its peak and has nowhere to go but down. It is not when the show has all ready started to decline in quality. -
Aren't they doing that this season?Y'know, that's a great suggestion! Matt might have them jump a shark in this movie just for the joke. He knows the show is old, and mocking himself would be perfectly in keeping with his style.
I swear I saw Homer jumping a shark on skis in the previews for this season. It made me crack up. I am actually surprised they haven't done it on the show yet. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it became a running gag. I don't know if the Simpsons could ever truly jump the shark, they are all about the shark.

Re:Mmmm.... movies!
Isn't there an episode were Homer literally jumps a shark?
Actually looking at Jump the Shark it was the episode titled Gump Roast... which aired on 21 Apr 2002.
So The Simpsons jumped the shark between 8-8:30 PM EST on April 21st 2002. -
Well, yeah...
I'm sorry, but so what? Star Trek jumped the shark as soon as they threw that half-baked Battlestar Galactica rip-off, Voyager, on the air. (Don't agree? Borg = Cyclons, Voyager = Galactica, far from home and lost.) Berman and Braga fucked up what could potentially be a great series by trying to do the same stupid Time War shit they did with Voyager, etc.
In the end, as much as I find the characters interesting, I just can't bring myself to care too much about the premature end of this five-year mission. You can't keep a show running, much less grabbing public interest, based on potential. This show had it, but it failed to deliver on it. -
So...

The original 4-hour mini-series was great. The following series "jumped the shark."

Desktops?!!!You're still thinking in terms of desktops?!!!
I thought that as we all saw on TV, we should have all been using VR interfaces back in 1996!
Desktops? How quaint.
What about the kitchen metaphore?
Or better yet, the bathroom user interface?
What about countertops?
Or stovetops? What ever happened to VRML?!! I've got this mungo-ass 3D accellemerator card that came with my PC, but my operating system utilizes exactly 0% of it. Where are the direct-to-brain elecronical interfaces invented by William Gibson? Why has the state of the art been polishing the same turd since 1978 ?!!!
