Re:Impressive, but usability?..
Make sure to give yourself enough time with it... make sure to go to http://www.kdelook.org/ and get some icons and a theme you like and spend time in the control panel getting everything to your liking.
I find that KDE takes more work to get like I want it.... but with all of it's features and configurability it surpasses Gnome after I spend that amount of time. Kind of a pay up front kinda deal.
Good luck! Have fun!

The website is really: http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/
We don't have the ability to maintain the superkaramba.com site as Adam is not available currently to help, and he owns the superkaramba.com domain.

KDE DOES NOT MIMIC WINDOWS!
Where on earth did you get that idea? The defeault keramik theme is all own its own. Plus you can make it look like anything you want. Mac, BeOS, CDE, Indigo, C64, RiscOS, QNX, anything. Look at the screenshots, see the truth!
KDE is the universial GUI, its just that most people, including you haven't clicked the wrench icon to start customizing! -
Re: Mac.
FUCK OFF MAC ZEALOT!
Do I really want to spend 3000 on an expensive slow machine that LOOKS LIKE A FUCKING CHEESE GRATER that gets whomped in performance by 1000 e-machine computers that look good. Not to mention that before Mac OS X, Macs were pieces of colour candy crap! Ooo, did I mention the mandatory $129 upgrade extortions that you need to pay! Yeah right, she would like that, for what. So she can look at icons enlarge when they move over them? So she can look at all her windows as thumbnails when she points the mouse cursor at a screen corner? Stop wanking Mac Fanboy, Linux has surpassed Mac OS X's usabillity AGES ago. Since KDE 3.0 and SuSE 8.0 infact!
Im getting her KDE 3.2. All the mac she wants, and with 2000 to spend on other stuff for her. Karamba kicks the shit out of Konfabulator anyday. Look at it and weep. Linux gets more eye candy then you, not to mention we get more applications becuase We use the INDUSTRY STANDARD X11 graphical system rather than some propreitry crap! -

Re:What is KDE exactly?
KDE stands for the K Desktop environment. It is a complete user interface. Its not a window manager, but it does contain one. With kde you get a Window manager, a desktop, a collection of programs and tools for Linux, such as a web browser, file manager, games, utlities and office suite. You should try it as its way beyond the dark ages of FVWM.
Here are some screenshots, so you know what it looks like -
Re:Good job to Lindows
As another example, Lindows also supports KDE-Look (a KDE desktop theming site) which IIRC couldn't pay for its hosting until Lindows sponsored them.
Anyway, it's nice to know that a pay-only Linux distribution is still contributing to the community (though I do not use Lindows either).

Putting out the flames.
It looks like the same old flamewars are starting again. Here is some information to debunk the myths and trolls on this thread.
KDE/Gnome is ugly
Well if don't like the look, change the theme. Both desktops are very themeable. Go into the control panel and change it. Also check Gnome art and KDE look. You will soon see that the most popular Gnome downloads are Klones of kde themes (Such as Crystal, Keramik and Plastik).
The leading desktop environment.
This is the most controversial point. While people try to convince themeselfs that Gnome is leading, it is actually KDE. Look at most of the Linux Distros out there. All the desktop distros (Mandrake, Lindows, Gentoo, Suse) use KDE by default, while distros aimed at Servers and geeks (Like redhat, debian, slackware) use Gnome. Recent surveys show that 70% of users prefer KDE, 20% for Gnome and 10% for others such as Windowmakers, BoxFlux, Twm, etc.
KDE/Gnome is bloated
Nonsence, both desktops are modular, and when only the base pakages are installed, they are very light. Its only when you install the add on packs such as kdeutils, koffice that you get USEFUL utillites. Not to mention that part of the reason why gnome feels lighter is because a lot of the configuartion has been removed, and they have to use tools such as gconf-editor to edit the advanced stuff. KDE lets you have all the stuff and dosent hide it.
This is meant to be insightful. I choose KDE as my preferred desktop enviornment, but I'm fed up of gnome trolls spreading noncence about KDE and fed up of kde trolls spreading noncence about gnome. Make your own choice, but dont spread FUD about the competition. KDE 3.2 is coming out soon and I think 90% of trolls will be silenced by its improvements, its that good! -
Re:Ewwww!
Gnome Screenshots
KDE Screenshots.
Which ones look better?
The reason is that the GTK theming api is reatared and Pixmap based. The SVG hacks are awful too. KDE can use programmable themes, that are also more flexible and FAST too! Now go away and type (or your equivilent)
apt-get uninstall gnome
apt-get install kde-3.2-alpha! -
Re:HindsightApple has realized the dangers of x86, and so they leave that to the open source community. For example, the Darwin kernel has been ported to x86. Another example is Apples involvement with KDE! Look at the changelogs and you will see a lot of apple developers.
Try the KDE 3.2 beta, its a lot easier to use and is definitely a Windows replacement! EyeKandy, Shiny fonts, Reduction of K-names, Less buggy and can emulate MacOS X very easily, check kdelook to see screenshots of what it can do!
So, if you want apple on x86, go with Linux! The days of crappy fonts, confusing interfaces and dependency hell are long gone!

Re:pffttt....
I don't know about StarOffice (I'll never use another Sun product ever again
... well almost never *curses java*) but OpenOffice can use KDE's icons so you can pretty much make it look like any KDE application. That's with the OpenOffice 1.1RC series. Its not unstable for me at all and with the icons, its not ugly. It is still slow as heck though. Of course as koffice is going to migrate to OpenOffice's fileformats, this issue will be mute for you eventually. -

Stop the fisher priceization of GNOME!
Looks like Eugina has been smoking bad shit again! After the awful window decoration she designed, comes this shit! If you thought Microsoft Luna or KDE Keramik were bad, think again! Least it isn't this bad!. Start using one of the boxes (blackbox, fluxbox, openbox et el) instead.

Re:Slowly sneaks up to Tackat and Everaldo...
> KDE 3.0's graphics were just horrid.
I'm not sure what you mean. KDE 3.0's graphics by default look pretty much like KDE 2.x. It was released before either things like Keramik or crystal-SVG were ready for inclusion into KDE.
KDE 3.1, however, will have the new looks.
> Get with it guys.
Well, pretty much the rest of the world is headed towards OSX-ish graphics. WindowsXP went there. Most OSX-ish related icons on kde-look are highly popular. It's just the new modern look.
I also think a point has to be made that these are original works of art. They aren't knockoffs, but derive insipiration from other previous works.
Anyways, if you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to use whatever is default. In fact, it's a option to use "Classic" themese in kpersonalizer, which is run the first time KDE is run. All it takes is one mouse/keystroke. -
Re:In case of slashdotting
Everaldo Coelho: By the way, for me, KDE-Look is a big basket of ideas and there is lots of good stuff there.
Yep, most definatley. KDE was once chastized for not having many options open for people who did not prefer the hicolor/locolor icons. There were really not that many icon sets available for kde before KDE-look opened. But now, if you go to the icons section of kde-look, there are a LOT of them. KDE-look attracted quite a few of the artistic type, especially with other sites having trouble (especially the whole themes.org version 2 fiasco.) This has really made kde's customizability shine.
btw, I'm not sure why this article got delegated to the developers section of slashdot... it has nothing to do with art. -

Make it pretty
In going with the idea that bright and shiny things can catch attention, my advice would be to use Keramik if you're showing KDE, and also install the Geramik gtk theme. I've always considered Keramik to be a very inviting theme for people used to XP. It's similar enough in style that they'll feel unintimidated by it, and different enough that they won't be thinking "ripoff" when it comes up. Linux still has a very bad reputation for being a scary operating system that only the extreame computer geek could comprehend. Having ones first real experience with linux instead of a command line being a nice shiny set of buttons I believe can have a big impact on getting someone into it. Plus having Keramik and Geramik both active will hide the multiple styles and give a unified appearence. In terms of functionality I like having the choice, but in terms of the 'average' end user I think most would rather remain ignorent of what's running at any one time.
I also think another thing you might want to try is showing off apt (via a frontend), or one of the apt like systems. One of the biggest impressions mandrake made on me was when I typed mp3 in the search field of rpmdrake, and it gave me a list of media players which could be installed or downloaded with just a click or two. I think something like that can be a huge help to someone not overly familier with computers, or especially with what software is available for the platform. -

KDE alternatives(Heck it's only karma)
Here's some places you can go to if you fancy KDE more than Gnome (hey, tastes differ. Get over it already) :
- KDE-Look dot org - A nice theme repository. Even has GTK themes and icewm themes because KDE can use those too.
- Official KDE art site

Mandrake
I almost hate to do this but, I think Mandrake REALLY needs to start reading this and taking it into account. I've been using MDK for a few years now and I do really like the distro. Hell, infact, I'm burring the 8.2 beta2 right now. *BUT* one thing that makes me REALLY hate what they do is all this -mdk crap. Even something simply like the Kicker Menu icons are all stored in -mdk locations so no source that you use will get the icons right without you making symlins all over the place. And even when you DO make all the symlinks and copy stuff to MDK's locations, next time you install something, their RPM's will run "update-menus" and "fix" all their locations to their liking. THAT makes me not too happy.
For instance Mosfet's Liquid theme. He has a kcontrol module that he uses to control his theme. You can't have it on MDK if you don't copy his module to (something like, I forget): /usrshare/applnk-mdk-simplified/.hidden/Configurat ion. Not the two big problems there. First eh mkd specifck location and then a HIDDEN dir on top of that.
It's this sort of thing that (my understand is) the LSB is supposed to help "prevent". I wish MDK would follow it. I think it would REALLY help the newbies if they did.
