Re:"Death to Gamers and Long Live Videogames"
Making potentially defamatory claims without evidence is not just lazy, but possibly also illegal depending on where you live. Show your work.
There is a fair bit of editorializing here, but also a lot of evidence: Quinnspiracy on KnowYourMeme
At a quick perusal, it seems like; a) she has been subject to some abuse by misogynists, b) she has been engaged in some conflict of interest regarding reviews of her games, and c) she has both benefitted from and promulgated the misogyny aspect of her story.
The misogyny part is obviously bad. But if Zoe is taking advantage of -- and thereby harming -- the movement to advance the equality of women in gaming and technology, then she is bad too. If that is the case, then we who seek equality should reject her as an icon. Backlash is a perilous thing to progressive movements.

YOU DON'T SAY?
I love memes.
I make sure to catch up with memes twice a month on specialized web sites, but they often come to me while browsing around.
I think they are now a good 33% of what really make me laugh on the web.
The Botched Christ meme and its parodies is a major meme to me, I hope they won't forget this one

RMS is wrong on MAC
Mandatory Access Control, or "application censorship" as Stallman calls it, is just a refinement of earlier security practices. His own GNU system enforces Unix's user/group access controls. A process running on a user's behalf is not allowed to interfere with other users in the same system. It turns out that programs can do undesirable things to the user's own stuff (mostly from accidental security vulnerabilities), so it's helpful to limit what a program can do. The only alternatives are for you, the user, to limit yourself to running programs that you can study and verify that they simply do not do bad stuff, or to disconnect yourself as Stallman has done. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Re: Fat Chance
Reminds me of a translation of a sign I saw in Ukraine: "If you become part of Russia, you won't be speaking Russian - you'll be silent in Russian."
A large portion of the problem is Putin's crackdown on the press. As bad as the state of a free press often seems in the west, it's nothing compared to Russia where pretty much all opposition to Putin has been eliminated. They're now ranked 148th in world press freedom, worse than half of Africa.
Whatever is the current propaganda message, it gets echoed relentlessly. Just the other day they had the same Ukranian guy (Andrey Petkov) on three different stations, but they didn't even bother to give him the same story on each. On NTV, he was a German spy smuggling money to support the anti-Russian protesters. On Rossiya 1, he was a repentent pro-Ukraine extremest who converted to the pro-Russian side after having been savagely beaten by fellow protesters. In yet another segment he was a neo-Nazi surgeon supporting the new Ukranian government.
Probably the funniest bit of propaganda was after an attack on a pro-Russian checkpoint. They all broadcast images of the two totally burned-out cars which they said that members of Right Sector drove up in to attack it. They then presented piles of American money, satellite images, and a business card with the name of the leader of Right Sector on it, among a bunch of other stuff. Just ignoring the absurdity of right-wing assault groups roaming around carrying business cards of their leader (with a fake phone number on them), the funny part was that everything that they presented was pristine - not only unburned, but altogether undamaged. Whatever material Right Sector makes their leaders' business cards out of that can survive a car-gutting fire, please, disclose it immediately so we can use it for fireproofing! It's gotten lots of coverage; the card now has its own Know Your Meme entry
;)As funny as it is, a large portion of the Russian public just takes this sort of stuff at face value. The media keeps repeating the same mantra: "Ukranian neo-nazi extremists overthrew the government and are assaulting innocent Russians". So when international reporters first-hand witness the "little green men" throwing molotov cocktails at a peace rally full of children, it doesn't matter, it gets reported in Russia as "rival protest groups clashed" or even "pro-Russian protesters repel an attack", and there's nobody on the airwaves to say otherwise.

Re:More lip service
If your browser is presented with a genuine signed Google.com certificate, issued by Honest Achmed's Trusty Certificates of Tehran Iran, then why shouldn't your browser just trust this certificate from a trusted CA?
Because if you don't accept, your browser will emit a shrill piercing wail, loudly declaiming your obscene and hertical attempts to use a secure connection which has not been certified. A yellow clad official -- likely of Arstotzkan origin -- will appear to lend an air of official disapproval to the disgraceful suggestion that you should prefer encryption, any encryption, over plain text without authentication.
So, you must Accept Our Glorious CA Validated HTTPS Protocols or else revert to wide open plain text. Cause no trouble.
P.S.
I personally believe that Firefox's self signed policies were the result of NSA lobbying/influence at Mozilla. The secure web was set back a decade by this decision, and the fallout has render the entire CA and hence https infrastructure all but useless.

Kill Will Wheaton
The NSA nowadays seems focused on finding people/groups/countries intent on hurting the USA.
So, to be grateful to the NSA, we need people / groups / countries intent on hurting the USA.
These already exist, so that part's addressed.
But... what if the supply of angry people were to dry up?!?!
Oh noes! No more need for the NSA!!So logically, we need to ensure that we create new people who are pissed at the USA.
Since we're talking about the future of the NSA here, this is too important to leave to any extremist, no matter how well-intentioned they may be.
The best way to get new folks pissed at you -- and I am speaking from personal experience here -- is simple: be a dick.
As such, the very first step towards a new glorious dawn of the NSA can be nothing else but to kill Will Wheaton. Will: sorry bout that, but the logic seems irrefutable.

Re:Changing culture
You haven't read the links carefully if you didn't see what I wrote. Take the video for example, in the follow up the woman is very careful to explain that she was beaten for turning down a man instead of being a snitch. The presumption was that anyone being attacked like that must have been a snitch. Luckily the neighborhoods like Oakland are very much the exception, and the vast majority of America is statistically safer than Europe. A few more examples for you to think on:
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/fuck-the-police
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Many-young-black-men-in-Oakland-are-killing-and-3299781.phpSeeing a shrink isn't going to help with a cultural issue. The culture that rules these types of neighborhoods celebrates violence, (this is where most US murders come from) and ruthlessly kills anyone that speaks up about a crime they witness. To quote the SFgate article:
Witnesses are cowed into silence because snitches have been known to disappear. Nearly half of all murders in Oakland go uncharged for lack of a willing witness, so a shooter knows he has about a 50-50 chance of getting away with it.

Go check out what happened to Usenet
I'm generally in favor of giving users the right to anonymity - it doesn't represent the real world, people say, but hell, isn't that one of the benefits of the internet? But that said, I'm not sure it's worked out perfectly.
I've spent a lot of time on Usenet recently, for several reasons. And holy crap, Usenet is a festering cesspool of vile, antagonistic, hostile, offensive ad-hominem attacks. Yes, anonymity allows you to discuss sensitive subjects while remaining protected. It also subjects you to the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory (GIFT) (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/greater-internet-fuckwad-theory).
Maybe this says more about current Usenet denizens than it does about the benefits of anonymous discussion, but it seems Usenet has become a platform for aggressively launching personal attacks against other readers. Just one of the nails in Usenet's coffin, I think. So much for civil discourse!

Working for tiny companies
My last job was kinda odd this way, they were so frightened of me spending some extra time on my actual project to ensure it works in cases of bad input and to simplify some code that they laid me off. Of course, I was a bit cavalier about ensuring management backing.
I would call this a sign of the times, I currently work for some guy for free because he has an interesting project and yet I still don't want to fool around with stuff that needs doing but isn't highest priority. This is a startup and needs some help so I better show some manners.
But in general I squarely blame net energy decline for it. While it may look to some as if financial mismanagement caused this short term thinking craze that has gripped CEOs and associated ilk, I think it is actually the awareness that we really do have no future for projects mankind doesn't need anyway. If our world is turning into an energy starved wasteland much like the onion suggests:
http://knowyourmeme.com/videos/66081-the-onionthen there is really no need for engineers who have a passion for their job and improving their knowledge of highly complex systems that depend on a working industrial society for its continued existence. Ultimately you will be overspecialized in a field that due to its multiple hard dependencies has an increased probability of failure in an environment that is characterized by shortages and sub standard performance because somebody tried to follow the growth paradigm
by eating its own flesh, i.e. abused the trust still existing in society to sell a shoddy, substandard product while the usual drivers for growth like population growth and energy input have become unavailable. -
Re:3% velocity
the Designer claims it fires the nails at 9000 Feet Per Second.
In the video comments, the designer says "over 9000" fps. No doubt this references a popular internet meme, rather than say "I don't know exactly," because a projectile that size traveling at 9000 fps could not use a bedsheet as a safe backstop.
-
Re:3% velocity
So apparently the quote is: "over 9000? There's no way that can be right." linkage.
I'd be quite satistifed if I had the engineering skills to build that in my garage. Kudos to the guy for moving past 4chan.
Also: the Dell got what it deserved.

Re:apple profits from every product, MS doesn't
MS has lost billions of $$$ on bing, x-box and other experiments funded by Windows and Office license sales which are now slowing and decreasing. microsoft has been innovating for years but not profitably.
Yet another search engine and yet another game console don't really count as major innovations. Also, consider this.
they had commercial tablets before apple
Apple launched the Newton MessagePad in 1993.

Model view
The underlying technology, however, is the essence of the game. It's what tells us how mario moves compared to sonic or y metroid cant crawl.
"metroid can't crawl"? Do you think Halo is a "pretty cool guy" too? Let's correct that for a bit:
[The 3D engine technology is] what tells us how Mario moves compared to Sonic or why Samus cant crawl in Metroid.
In terms of a familiar MVC-style abstraction, the 3D engine forms part of the "view" on top of a "model" containing game mechanics. The model generates new positions for the game objects, and the view draws meshes at these positions. The model could be implemented in Python, Lua, JavaScript, or assembly language for an 8- or 16-bit virtual machine for all anyone cares.
