Re:Canada.....
According to this article at macrumors, it should be available "soon" (whatever that means...
;) in Canada. I sure hope so! -
Re:OS X VersionActually Adobe products on the mac phone home and I was not notified prior to purchase. I own PS for Mac so i wasn't terribly concerned, just annoyed enough finding out after the fact that i won't be purchasing any upgrades.

Re:iTunes for Windows Screenshots?
I know it's bad form to reply to your own message and all, but I found a thread with a few screenshots here.
And yes, it looks like the widgets (particularly the popup menus) are in Jaguar style rather than Panther. Dialog boxes and menus are Windows themed. Still looks good, though... -
Re:Does Panther support case-sensitive journalling
According to this macrumors story there is an option in the Panther disk utility. However in 7B85 I do not see this option. I had originally thought it was Panther Server only but maybe this is not the case and they have just removed it from the final release. I suggest you google it if you want more information as this is as much as I know. I suppose you could use UFS if case sensitivity is really a necessity for you.

Re:Does Panther support case-sensitive journalling
Yes according to this macrumors article , "The additional option is available under the Panther Disk Utility and is called "Mac OS Extended (case sensitive/journaled)"".
User of recent Panther builds verified this option was present. See the related forum . -

iPod rumors
There's a rumor that Apple might introduce a device next week which would allow the iPod to be hooked up to a TV for video playback. A lot of people have speculated that the iPod was never supposed to be just about music ("pod" suggests something more general), so this wouldn't be too much of a surprise. A built-in color screen would be the next step, I guess.

Re:Free ($20) Qualifying Update
Even if you purchased a powerbook G4 a few weeks earlier you have some chance of qualifying. Check out this link I bought my powerbook on Sept 16th and I didnt qualify at first but when I tried a couple of days later it worked like magic.
-
September 03 PowerBooks can qualify for uptodateA friend showed me this forum over at MacRumors where some people who purchased new updated PowerBooks in September were reportedly able to qualify for the upgrade.
Of course, hearing about this, I immediately went to the up to date page at the Apple store to qualify my new PowerBook which I purchased in September. My machine was qualified for the $20 upgrade and I promptly ordered it.

Re:Countdown clockI'm not the biggest fan of XBench, but these numbers [bidouille link] do paint a very impressive picture
... especially considering those stats were produced with a release earlier than 7b21. It's common knowledge that Apple were seeding 7b85 last week. That's a lot of updates in-between .... -
Re:Hooray!!Generally these coupons are only for upgrades to the current OS that shipped with your machine -- 10.2.x. It's for people who can't update software over the internet and need to get CDs.
That said, some folks over at MacRumors seem to have had early success in getting their previously obtained PowerBook serial numbers accepted for the up-to-date program. Who knows if Apple will actually honor them, though? Also, there's a group trying to persuade Apple to extend the up-to-date program to all new PowerBook purchasers. Phone number to contact Apple is here.
I'll be interested to find out if this ends up working, as I'm expecting 2 new PowerBooks at work any day now (they were supposed to be here yesterday!).

Re:Good for the semi guys
Apple to sue Motorola?
That's all I got. I dunno if that rumor was repeated elsewhere or not, or if there was any confirmation from anywhere that those are even the terms of the Apple/Moto contract. -
Re:Holy crap that thing's uglyYes, I have. Although Apple has very low market share among all personal computer manufacturers, they have very large market share (well over 50%, last I checked) among all vendors of digital audio players.
The iPod pretty much dominates the market for MP3 players. Making the iPod compatible with PCs was a brilliant move, and it'll take a lot more than Dell's share of the personal computer market to shove the Dell DJ down people's throats.
Some market share stats for the iPod: There's been an explosion of iPod sales this year, fueled initially by the availability of an iPod version for Windows, and then later by a version that works with both Macs and Wintel PCs, and supports both FireWire and USB 2.0.
And yeah, the Dell DJ really is ugly as sin. -

P2P & HTTP Replaced By B2P?
While P2P and HTTP may be excellent ways of file sharing, for better or for worse, the RIAA _will_ stop them. Right now they have attacked legally, which is leading P2P developers to make some advancements in the way of encryption, anonymity, etc. The RIAA seems to realize, now, that there really is no way to stop technology. We have already won.
Now they are taking the overused advice of "adopt a new business model", which seems to be services such as Apple's iTunes Music Store (Soon for Windows), BuyMusic.com, Rhapsody, and soon Roxio Napster 2.0.
The new RIAA attack plan is to offer B2P services. The problem? DRM. If I buy a CD from iTMS, for example, it may be $9.99. I would buy the same CD in store for $14.99. No, I'm NOT paying five bucks for the album art, professionally burned CD, etc. I'm paying for the right to do with it what I want. There's something about having "SOMETHING" in your hands. They can't take that away from you, like they can with digital music.
P2P for me is a way of sampling music before buying the CD. This will never be replaced by a $0.99 deal, since I like to download it, and listen to the song throughout the day. At work I listen to different music than at home. At night, different music from the day. Walking music is different from sittin' or driving music. Rhapsody fails here, so does iTMS... you can only sample certain portions, while in front of your computer. It's not the same.
Why P2P is better than HTTP? It's easier. More people use it, than HTTP was used for MP3 trading. Does it matter? No, B2P will overtake them both. There IS a large number of people who ONLY want digital music, that's why they turn to P2P. These people will turn to B2P once it becomes "mainstream."
For the most part the RIAA doesn't have to do legal battles any more (though it is a nice source of income), they can attack it by offering new online services, just as EVERYONE has been saying for years. Me, I'll stick to brick and mortar, and P2P though. -

Question:
Would that be the same "good solid engineering" that produced the extremely overpriced TiBook, which had trouble with airport range due to the materials it was built with, the same engineering that flaking body paint?..
Would that be the same engineering that allows for body and hinge fractures?
Wow, thats some damn good engineering! -

Hi. I can't stand Cringely, and didn't read his article, but you might be interested to know that the Panther betas/seeds from around August 3 have supported a case sensitive HFS+. I've been waiting for this for a long time ( switched my desktops from Linux ), and it was heartbreaking to watch a bunch of knuckleheads complaining in a mac forum that this would 'destroy mac as we know it' ( movie at 11 ). Seriously, where do these people come from?

good read... but way offI'm an IT Manager for a small company. We have about 5-10 Mac's here. We're 99.5% Linux on the server, and about 35% Linux on the desktop. I have a G4.
Mac OS X and 9 are not easier to use than Linux/Windows. I think many people erroneously think Macintosh is "easier to use" since they just give up on doing much with it. For me, "easier to use" means I can decide a task on my own, let's call it a "goal", and easily achieve this "goal" with my computer. This is why I prefer Linux or FreeBSD. I can achieve any goal I want. If someone else hasn't achieved it already I can achieve it for everyone. I've used OS 9 and OS X and I can state that achieving my goals was in many instances not even possible.
Even with modest goals I couldn't achieve them. For example, I dont like the default "skin" and I want to change it.. I have NEVER seen someone do this, I've even posted this statement half a dozen times on /. and NOBODY has shown me a screen shot of their customized OS X. A good friend of mine went from Linux to OS X and I consider him very technical, he doesn't know how to do this. Can it be done? No, I don't think so. You can do it, great, reply with a howto, or email me kgb@submarinefund.com I'll try it out post haste on my G4. There are a couple dozen tasks like this that I've tried that I ended up with the answer "can't be done?"
Ignoring the horrible hardware monopoly and the extremely overpriced and underpowered machines Apple sells, I can't recommend OS X to anyone since I have a VERY LOW expectation that they will be able to achieve their goals with it.
Of course the UI customization is one area that just irks me about Apple zealots. It's such a slick GUI. That's greeaattt... I hope you like it since you're stuck with it... I do think this is why a lot of people choose Linux over Win/Mac OS for control of customizations, with Mac or Win you're helpless, or dependent on shelling out $$$ for often buggy "skin" software...
It wasn't the only thing that couldn't be done with the Mac I have, but it's the one that bugs me the most and that I remember, since I moved on, back to my Linux box that does whatever I tell it, like a good penguin should..wow, you CAN change your skin.. with aftermarket software
...It looks like it messed up most peoples OS X.. -
Re:iPod
Apple has publicly stated that they're working on getting the iTMS working for Windows users (by the end of the year (macobserver story)), and as of the end of April Apple had a job opening on their website for a developer of iTunes for Windows (macrumors story).
So yes, there will be a Windows version of iTunes. -
iTunes for windows
Apple is making iTunes for windows, and they say it should be out by the end of the year. Macrumors.com has an article about iTunes for windows.

Clearing out inventory?Of course, everyone has been expecting new PowerBooks for some time, especially with the 8-month-old 15" model still lagging the other two in system specs. Both WWDC and MWNY came and went without a refresh, and it seems that the latest rumors are predicting a late August update to the line, using new Motorola PPC 7457 processors running at 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 GHz. As always, rumors should be taken with a huge helping of salt, but perhaps Apple realized that many students and educators have been waiting for a PowerBook revision before buying for the fall. End of August is probably a bit too late for most people to get new machines before the semester starts, so maybe this is just a small incentive to get people to buy current models now?
Regardless of speculation, it'll be interesting to see what happens with pricing when newer models do come out (whenever that may be).

Re:Piles?
Look here.
It seems that someone missed this, and that "piles" is actually the "Expose" feature in Panther. I got to play with this last night, and it is pretty cool even though it ran like shit (and was expected to) on my spare G4/350 with a feeble video card.

Re: This is fake
First, I'm really really really pissed off because I wrote this whole message and then accidentally deleted it. Seems you can't control-Z in these input boxes.
Second, I think these shots are fake, too. I hope they are for some of the reasons outlined below. I'll be going into a lot less detail in light of the fact that I'm having to type it all again. I did do an Observation/Conclusion thing, but this time I'll just make the observations and you can make your own conclusions.
I have only skimmed the thread, so apologies if these points have been brought up. Just seemed like everyone was "WOOHOO"ing without really looking closely. And similarity to other posts is just coincidence.
OBSERVATION: In the Activity Monitor window there are strange inconsistencies.
* First there are really tacky colours. Windows type tacky colour, not beautiful Apple colours.
* Second, the "% Nice" uses a , to seperate the decimals, not a . like the rest of the %'s. This smacks to me of a slip-up by someone European making the fakes.
* Third, the "Threads" and "Processes" don't line up right. Unless this is a very early build, it's very sloppy.
OBSERVATION: Yahoo Instant messenger is in the dock and on the desktop. If this is Panther, that presumably means no Yahoo support in iChat.
OBSERVATION: In the full screen of the expose desktop, Safari is all blocked out. Why? What incriminating website could he/she be looking at?
OBSERVATION: Why are the iChat windows censored totally? Why not just block them out like the Safari window?
OBSERVATION: About Finder is all wrong. "The Macintosh Desktop Experience"? And why "Finder version 10.3" rather than "Mac OS X (10.3)" like we'd expect? These aren't big things, obviously, but still...
OBSERVATION: No build number. Seems strange, since they'll most likely be giving out preview copies on Monday, and developers will want to know what build they're working with. If it's the final release, how did slip-ups like above creep in?
OBSERVATION: In the iChat window, it says "There is no camera attached to this computer." Yet the progress bar seems to be showing activity of some sort?
OBSERVATION: The Finder window named Xdrive is metal, but not entirely consistently. The metal has a bar down the right, next to the scroll bar, unlike Safari. This on its own is nothing that important, but the grow icon thing in the bottom right seems misplaced.
OBSERVATION: In the Mail screenshot, the "Working Offline" seems all wrong. Especially the "o" in working.
It just seems all wrong to me. I'm bound to end up with egg on my face, but I thought these items needed discussion.

Re:My analysis of why this is fake. It's not a G5, it's a PPC970, completely different beasts. Not to mention neither Motorola or IBM have 2GHz chips in their roadmap until 2005. Bzzzt One point impossible
Reliable rumor sources (such as MacRumors) have said that they have confirmed the use of the name G5 by Apple.
1GHz bus? gimme a break. Intel hasn't yet reached this. Two points impossible
Just because Intel hasn't reached it doesn't mean it's impossible. Anyone who judges the entire computer market by Intel's advances needs to get out more...
- AGP 8X Pro graphics options from NVIDIA or ATI
Almost believable, but for the moment Apple are phasing out the use of NVIDIA cards in their machines. I highly doubt they'll be used. Half a point impossible
These are Apple's Pro machines. They also, obviously, use a completely new architecture. So who's to say it's not plausible for Apple to use AGP 8x? Why can't Apple use AGP 8x? Don't you think they'd learn from their mistakes in the past, and include the fastest and latest technology in their products? Besides, if Apple is targeting this machine at high-end professionals, don't you think they'd need or want AGP 8x?
Three USB 2.0 ports
The rest of Apples site would say "3 USB Ports" not "Three". Also, Apple have a long standing habit of using Firewire instead of USB 2.0. I take this as one point impossible
Referring to my previous post, why wouldn't Apple include USB 2.0? Sure, it competes with FireWire, but it's a feature that will help sell more machines. Besides, with USB1.1 only motherboard chips becoming increasingly rare, it would seem only natural to include USB 2.0 with these new machines.
One FireWire 800, two FireWire 400 ports
Once again use of the verbal "One" instead of the numeric. Only one FW800 port? Why would Apple stick with FireWire 400 anyway? I mark this impossible
Maybe not everyone has use for FireWire 800. Even though it is backwards compatible with FireWire 400, not many people would want to carry around adapters for the plug. Besides, it would probably cost more to put in three FireWire 800 ports, when people mainly use FireWire 400.
Optical and analog audio in and out
Bad grammar, but optical audio in a graphics machine? I'm sorry but this sounds like wishful thinking. One more point impossible.
Who said this was exclusively a graphics machine? Look at the audio software out for Mac OS X. With the audio underpinnings of OS X, wouldn't it seem like a smart idea to put in pro-level hardware to make their software side of the OS more useful for the pros who need it?
In total, that's 4 and a half impossible features out of ten. If you're waiting on this machine, you'll be waiting a LONG time people.
I can wait three days for it. As said previously in this thread, there is no law of the universe that says Apple will always be behind the wintel world in hardware. These advancements will bring the machine up to par with PC's (AGP 8x, USB 2.0, Optical audio, etc..) while also surpassing high-end desktop PC performance.
Besides, if 8GB of ram is accecptable (which is not even available in any desktop PC that I know of), what makes you think that features that are standard in PC's today are impossible for Apple to implement???

Re:New Mac
Actually, the G5 and Panther (OS update) are rumored to be 64-bit. You might see 64-bit on a Mac first.

Re:My analysis of why this is fake.
It's not a G5, it's a PPC970, completely different beasts. Not to mention neither Motorola or IBM have 2GHz chips in their roadmap until 2005.
geez, and the pentium iii wasn't much of an upgrade over the pentium II, right? it could be just a name used for marketing. maybe they want to avoid a situation where a ppc970 seems as awkward a mouthful to say as "Pentium II celeron".
I will concede to you on the 2ghz.. that was a suprise to me as well.
1GHz bus? gimme a break. Intel hasn't yet reached this.
i guess you were pretty incredulous when the Athlon came out with a double data rate bus before Intel. Intel does not corner the market on chip innovation: Hypertransport, for example, is pretty much something that Intel has nothing to do with either.
The rest of Apples site would say "3 USB Ports" not "Three". Also, Apple have a long standing habit of using Firewire instead of USB 2.0.
guess you missed the bulletin that USB 2.0 chipsets are on new powermacs right now...
Only one FW800 port? Why would Apple stick with FireWire 400 anyway?
becuase fw400 and 800 use different plugs? becuase there are mostly FW400 perhipherals available? i could think of all sorts of reasons. the 17" cafeteria tray powerbook has only one FW800...
but optical audio in a graphics machine? I'm sorry but this sounds like wishful thinking.
yeah it's whishful thinking. but hell, if the Creative Labs Audigy can have a SPDIF input and output, why not a mac? What kind of moron does audio on a mac? oh Skywalker Sound and Aphex Twin. i mean, have you ever heard of Protools?
maybe it's going to be a big hoax and we'll all look like dupes. but saying that these things are "impossible" makes me think you've been reading too much PC propaganda. -
HOLY SHIT: G5 SPECS LEAKED!
