Excel 1040It's sort of open source, as open as an excel spreadsheet goes anyway. Works fine in OpenOffice Calc. I've been using it for years, haven't been audited yet.

Re:Education would fix that
2) The fonts in Windows have been optimized at the per-pixel level to match up with LCD monitors. In KDE 3.x the fonts are about where they were in the Windows 3.1 world, circa 1995. Big pudgy letters that my eyes have to fight to glom. Especially in FireFox on Linux.
This is what your post looks like to me on Firefox 3 under Yellow Dog Linux 6:
http://home.mchsi.com/~CronoCloud/pics/firefox_slashdot.png
Does it look like that to you?
3) For fucks sake - where's the calculator? It's bad enough that I can't hover over the different parts of the start menu (or what ever it's called) and just see what's under there, drill down without it hiding all the other stuff because it 'page flipped' - but the calculator isn't called 'calculator'. It's called kcalc. And the movie player isn't called 'movie player'. It's called ICEwigga or something. And the music player isn't called 'music player' - it's called kude or some shit like that.
Depends on the distro. Some distros do have kcalc listed in the menus as calculator, or Rhythmbox as "music player".

Re:Yeah, well
And I'd imagine that with the right software both the PS3 and XBox 360 would make quite acceptable work machines capable of running a spreadsheet program, for example, with ease.
There's no imagining needed, the default install of the PS3 version of Yellow Dog Linux includes Open Office.
Heck even the PS2 can run a spreadsheet, again with Linux:

Open Office tax form spreadsheet
I shouldn't do this. But please give the guy some cash. It is extremely useful, and works with OpenOffice. My taxes were fairly complex and they came out perfectly. Maybe you can help out and make an even better version.

Spread Sheet Alternative
Not quite open source. But free as in beer.
I've been using this guy's spread sheet for the past three years. Labled as 'Excel' but I've actually used it in Open Office. Prints nice.

Excel 1040
Google Excel 1040. It works for me. I blew off Intuit after their activation debacle. That and the fact that Office Despot consistently has lower prices for Intuit's products than Intuit's website. After Intuit, H&R Block's product seemed ok.

C64, Amiga, and INFO Magazine
Ah, the computer wars of the mid-80's.
At INFO magazine, we were right in the middle, bashing IBM and Atari, giving grudging admiration to the Mac, and singing the praises of the Commodore 64 and Amiga.
Those were the days.
Anyone still interested in such things might be interested in visiting my INFO nostalgia page at: http://airship.home.mchsi.com/infomag.htm

PS Very nice article at Ars, by the way. Great research. Those numbers are almost impossible to find, and I think they did a great job. Love the graphs. :) -

Lawsuits maybe part of the reason for the disasternature should get out of the way or face lawsuits
That's pretty funny, but I think it's true that lawsuits (or the fear of them) played a role in this disaster too.
The city of New Orleans had 400 municipal buses and 2500 school buses, enough to take 100,000 people to Baton Rouge in a day and a half. The only one that was used was commandeered by a 20-year-old civilian, Jabbar Gibson (bless his soul), and driven to Houston with 70 strangers aboard. The rest were not only unused, but now lie destroyed by the flood waters. Why?
The answer could be simple ignorance and incompetence on the part of local Democrat politicians (at the risk of being redundant). However, the buses were part of the official State of Louisiana Emergency Operations Plan: see page 13, paragraph 5:
'The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating'...
I have a more likely theory to explain this appalling failure on the part of the local pols: I bet the Mayor and Governor were afraid there would be a traffic boo-boo, and everyone aboard would sue the city for millions.
(Especially if the evacuation turned out to be a false alarm. Which is why the incompetent Democrat schoolmarm of a Governor went out of her way at the Aug. 28 press conference to state that she and the Mayor were only evacuating the city at the express urging of none other than President George W. Bush.)
If you are a lawyer, you had better think long and hard about the damage your profession is doing to the American way of life.

Excel Spreadsheet
Here's a free Excel spreadsheet which covers US form 1040 and a number of related schedules. It's done a good job for me. http://home.mchsi.com/~taxcalculator/.

Here's a good Spreadsheet
I've used this for the past two years, and I think it's great. http://home.mchsi.com/~taxcalculator/ And yes, I've successfully used and printed this from Open Office. I didn't like Turbo tax because it was tough to play those "what if" scenarios. Like, what if I had made 100 dollars more than I did, or had 12 more kids, etc...

Excel tax spreadsheet
I can't believe no one has mentioned the Tax Calculator. It uses Excel spreadsheets (which work in OpenOffice) for all schedules and most of the major supplemental forms to produce IRS forms with all the math done correctly. Don't download it now, but wait a month or so while the spreadsheet is being refined. It's probably the best tax software that works on all platforms, and it's completely free. As long as you can read IRS instructions, this works great.

Re:Hmm.
Yeah, I got that too. The title went blue also... #3300cc, not the color used for Games section stories. I'm not a subscriber or anything fancy like that. The article now shows up fine except that the titlebar is still blue. Maybe they just edited Slashcode to have different colored article titles, and messed something up in the process. Screenshot here.

Qwest once had a transparent proxy in Des Moines
Qwest Communications, before selling dial-up and DSL customers to MSN, once had a transparent web proxy set up in Des Moines, Iowa. All outgoing HTTP traffic to port 80 was routed through the proxy.
The worst part was that when the proxy went down, packets continued to be routed to it, but tier 1 tech support personnel (located in another state--probably Minnesota) had no idea that the proxy even existed. The only way to work around it was to use a web proxy somewhere on the Internet that did not operate on port 80!
Qwest finally removed the transparent proxy shortly before switching customers to MSN. I eventually switched to Mediacom cable modem at home and McLeodUSA DSL at work.
