One of my favorite web browsing features comes from a project called Pornzilla, an effort to turn Moz into a better poon-viewing platform.

At the link above, there's a neat little javascript-bookmarklet which will open a new window and populated with all images linkd to on any given page. You can then save just the images en-masse or view them without clicking to and fro a bunch.

Yes, it's a neat invention for porn surfers. It's even better for any kind of web artwork or to check image links on a page you're developing. Unfortuneatly, it chokes on donkey balls on sites that check referrer headers before serving images.

So I'm surfing on over to Netscape's browser page to have a look at the new monster when...OH MY LORD!!!! Jumping out from behind my desk I run to the wall and yank my network cable from the wall jack.

It seems as though Netscape has been spying on me while I surf the internet, how else could they produce a browser for the way I use the web? I must say that I feel torn by the obvious intrusion into my personal space and the fact that Netscap 7.0 must now be a Lynx clone. It sure would be nice to run a text only browser with a Netscape interface.

Maybe when I get brave enough to go back on the web I'll give it a try...

Get a near-monopoly on desktop operating systems, expand into developer tools, and push the competition virually out of the marketplace by making people think they have to use your product. :-)

By the way, IE is the most DOM compliant browser (comparing it to NS, Mozilla, Opera, and Links). So don't spread the FUD.

Hmm for some strange reason, I get the feeling you don't actually do much DOM work. If you did, you would know that you're the one spreading FUD... or at least, talking out of your ass.

Netscape put out a comparison chart a while ago (M13 vs IE/PC 5.5r1 vs IE/MAC 5.0), which while old, still serves it's purpose in pointing out IE5's weaknesses (IE6 is much improved). ppk keeps has own W3C DOM compatibility chart.

Still, IMO Mozilla's DOM support outshines IE's. Does IE have their known DOM bugs online like Mozilla does? Mozilla's main weaknesses are some speed issues (improving a lot recently), and lack of ranging/selections in textareas, however, the DOM Inspector and JavaScript Debugger more than makes up for it.

The DOM Inspector alone will make you switch to Mozilla as your primary testing browser - it'll tell you the DOM properties, Box model, CSS rules, and computed styles of any element. If that doesn't get your eyes to light up, then you probably haven't ever had to do much "advanced web code multiple browsers."

Mozilla has zoom. Ctrl +/- zoom in and out.

But that doesn't zoom images. But fortunately, you can get mozilla to zoom images with a bookmarklet from the Pornzilla page.

Using the Wayback machine trick outlined above, I was able to get a copy of the original ariuni .exe file. Below is the EULA, which is written as a supplement to that of applicable software. The definition of the latter includes "Microsoft Office" (no version specified), whereas the MS website now stipulates that the font is for Publisher 2000 users only.

Thus, to expand on my comments above, there is an even more dire need for a OS'd and free prorportional TrueType (or better) font with as broad a unicode coverage as possible. The only alternative I know of is Cyberbit; Bitstream's website says it is now a commerical font, but you can download it from netscape's ftp site.

The eWorld cooperation led to nothing further up to now, so I am unsure if this means anything. Apple seems to be good at keeping options wide open. For example, while the default browser on a fresh Mac OS X is IE, the default home page is hosted by Netscape (AOL/TimeWarner, whatever).

Overall they say that mozilla would make a good substitute for IE 6 but there is no major reason to switch over.

No reason to switch over? I've been using Mozilla 1.0 in Windows constantly since 1.0 was released. IE 6 just feels so DUMB compared to it. I shouldn't even have to mention tabbed browsing or the sidebar tabs and the great reference content that you can put there. As a web developer I find it indispensible. I can't speak for the average user, but I think that when this thing gets released as Netscape 7 with seamless support for all of the plugins Microsoft will be in for run for its money.

Bottom line, there are major reasons to switch over -- tabbed browsing, control of javascript (no popups), searching Google from the url bar. I can't say enough.

Back in the day (think Navigator 3.02 timeframe) at Netscape, the "home page" marketing team though spawning a new window would be nifty. With their PRD in hand, they turned to an engineer named Jonathan Feinstein.

Jonathan might not have been the absolute first, but he certainly created the most visible pop-up example. Back then, Netscape had well over 50% market share and the vast majority of those users still used www.netscape.com as their home page. Millions of users were baffled by this new thing. And thousands of "web-designers" copied it.

So there you go. I'll buy him a beer if I ever see him again.

The value of 1 came in a patch by the PornBrowser team, did it?

Many free web hosts (not just porn hosts) require each image request to include the correct referrer. I wouldn't expect the "images only" setting to work on porn sites, because the browser doesn't know whether a link (such as a thumbnail) links to an image or an html page.

AOL already has the broadcasting infrastructure and the reciever infrastructure. Shoutcast uses streaming mp3s which do stream very well considering its not the best compression out there anymore. Winamp is probably still one of the best mp3 players out there.

The problem of course, if they want to kill real audio, is that AOL does NOT have the infrastructure to do video. Others might say the problem is that all this is bottled up in the mess which is currently time-warner. The company which bought up all the tools to destroy microsoft then failed to develop them.

But all this is a moot point because a sizable percentage of people haven't used any real audio product or service in ages because microsoft's media player is adaquate, free, and doesn't require installtion (since it's bundled with the os) or navigating past the "pay for something you already have!" screens to get to the "free" player.

Real audio is a dying format. All AOL has to do is either buy the company (doubtful given the current economic climate at time warner) or simply throw their support to quicktime or windows media. Eventually real audio will go the way of so many other dot.coms that tried to play in microsoft's sandbox.

The Mosaic it's refering to is NCSA Mosaic: the first web browser. Some of it's principal developers went on to form Netscape Communications Corporation.

MS should be bashed...it's like the diner that tries to sell rancid water and stale bread for $100(us). They use whatever means necessary to beat down their competition, so almost all of the other diners (or food producers) have gone out of business or are struggling. You can get better food from homeless shelters for free.

If you want to make a better comparison of MS vs open source then take 80-90% of _all_ open source programs and compare the number of flaws to MS' flaws.

Probably 80-90% of all open source programs are made by one or more of: script kiddies, teenagers playing around, hobbists, power users, people that bought "Learn to Program C in 21 Days" who now think they are "experts", and the people can't program so they start a project on SourceForge with a basic description and hope someone bites. None of these people should be expected to create a decent, bug-free program. For you to even think MS needs to be compared with them shows how backwards your position is.

Anyone and their cat can start an open source project in their garage. It doesn't mean anyone will use these programs, and it is absurd to compare those projects with a funded company that has paid professional programmers. However, from what I've seen, Microsoft would barely scratch by with even this test. If compared with the commonly used (and made by real programmers) Open Source projects, Microsoft wouldn't even have a chance.

Take a simple program like "BitchX," an IRC client.

I've used it before. Not to dis the guy who made it (BitchX isn't too bad an effort), but it does seem a bit script kiddie-like. In fact only a script kiddie would choose such a name. ;-) In fact read their page: "BitchX was started by Trench and HappyCrappy as a script for the ircII client."

It has had countless security issues, and IRC has been around since '89 or so.

Why don't you compare BitchX with Microsoft's IRC client--assuming they still have one. All I remember about it was almost no features and stupid cartoons. BitchX has lots of features. Not that I'm saying they should be compared, BitchX is made by script kiddies after all--in fact they seem to want to be known as script kiddies--just look at their page!

there is no equal or objective comparison between MS and "Linux" (or whatever you want to define as the yardstick of security.. which is typically "Linux" on /.) in terms of security.

There is no equal or objective comparison between the two because MS doesn't care about security or bugs! Whatever Linus would call a "Brown Paper Bag Bug", Bill calls a "feature". ...and I don't think most slashdot readers define Linux as a "yardstick of security". That would be something more like OpenBSD, who kick the hell out of Microsoft in terms of paranoia and therefore security. Numbers from bug reports aren't a good comparison between them either--the OpenBSD people seem to raise hell when they find the tiniest potential exploit, while Microsoft won't even acknowledge the most horrid of bugs/exploits and will only release a patch if they are embarrassed into it.
