Well then how do you get credit for the work you do, when all that's noticed is the downtime?
You guys could still learn smth from BOFH ;-) -

There's Need To Know , it's UK based. Although, it isn't the same as EFF/FSF.

yeah, you right.This man could never work for IBM, now could he. Gates did not last long either.
It's big of you to call for "a somber, factual, reasonable, respectful debate" after calling RMS a "rude", "interupting", "unpresentable", "shrill", "adversarial", "divise" and bigoted messenger. More name calling, how typical. Go away no one here needs closed source binaries and I'm tired of your form of debate.

Re:RIP Internet

I see no advertisements. Perhaps you could search through this this thread for possible clues to where a better browser can be found.

Re:How did they lose $80 million?
It looks like NTK is out of their "I got £80million in venture capital for my

Re:Boohoo.
It's almost as if they are completely ignorant of the fact that DEVELOPERS are the only ones keeping Microsoft in their position, so -- of *COURSE* Microsoft is going to be aggressive about controlling them.
I can't believe you would question Microsoft's devotion to developers... -
Re:what was the "different and confusing" set?
Well, if you actually read my article properly...... you'd see that Dave Green from NTK had a recorder with him, and the Union video'd the whole debate. No news on when (if ever) either of those will go online though - waiting on Dave seeing if the quality is good enough, and the Union reaching a decision on putting their debates on the net.

This is almost TOO easy ...``He's got it tough,'' said Walter Price, who helps manage $35 billion at Dresdner RCM Global Investors and holds Microsoft shares. ``I don't know what you do to protect your shareholders and preserve your market capitalization except to out-innovate the Linux community.''
He must be new
...Let's inform him on some of the "innovating" that Microsoft has done in the past
... shall we?DOS
... Nope, they bought it ...
Windows (UI) ... Nope, got it from the Mac ...
Internet Explorer ... Nope, got it from NCSA (Mosaic) ... in fact, they almost missed the Internet ...
Word ... Nope, WordPerfect was already around ...
DRM ... Nope, got it from the RIAA ...Hmmm
... seems that Micrsoft needs a little improvement for innovating ...BTW, don't miss the Dancing Monkey

I bet I can find 15 people who love XP, OS/2, AmigaDOS, ColecoVision, Mincemeat pie, sweaty gym shorts, beastiality, etc, etc.
I think I could only find one guy who loves sweaty gym shorts enough to testify about it. -

BBC moving away from Linux?
According to NTK, the BBC has merged its streaming media divisions so a move to OGG may no longer be on the cards.

BOFH Meta Thread
Post any jokes about the Bastard Operator From Hell (and what he would think of this) here so people don't have to hunt for them. Then delete those people's files and point their login to the null device.

DVDSynthBizarrely, this was in NTK this week. OK, windows-only and all that, but looks like a perfect solution to their problem.

Instead of a central repository, carry it with youSed quis custodiet ipsos custodes? It doesn't matter where the data are; if they're on a central server, they're at risk -- all it takes is some disaffected sysadmin type or his boss or an FBI/NKVD/Gestapo type, and your personal details are public.
I carry all my logins etc. in my PalmOS device, encrypted in a Blowfish-protected database, and synched to my personal computer when I'm back in the office. I have to enter one decent password to get at my data, and if I lose the PDA I suppose someone could crack it if they *_really_* wanted to, but at least I know the data are NOT on a Microsoft/Sun/Liberty Alliance box where some disaffected BOFH can get to it.
YMMV.

Great GraphicThe BBC have a history of having "wonderful" graphics to go with their stories. In this case there's a picture of a Sky Digital (satalite) remote control, which I doubt very much could be used to reprogram a DVD player, and a grinning moron (no offence) with a N64 controller...
At least it's not as bad as some bad examples. (links stolen from ntk

Re:You killed NTK(enny), you BASTARDS!Doesn't seem to be doing too badly (probably helps that most of the usual target market for NTK have probably been down the pub all night, and that it's hosted on pretty decent bandwidth).

Re:UK Courts and PoliceThe RIPA tapping provisions only started recently, for ISPs with >10k subscribers. See last weeks NTK. But that shouldn't be too much of a problem for people running their own MXs(*) with TLS enabled, eh...? (of course, you also have to give them keys if asked, but it's a bit less susceptible to mass tapping than standard ISP email).
footnote: (*) easier done in the UK where static IPs are fairly easy to come by compared to some countries - though most proper ISPs are sensible and check you need them first, some, for example the main telco in the country, pretty much force a
BTW, a request from the authorities which I saw about providing user information for a dubious newsgroup posting asked for who was at a certain IP address at the time mentioned in the Date: header. Clever, eh...? /29 on the less clueful of their business customers. (The web page is only one side of it, the salespeople seem to be quite good at pushing this option too). Of course: they can then sell personal firewall software and get you to install a second line if you have >5 users. And don't even get me started on their wonderful trick of restricting MAIL FROM: domains at their SMTP relays (and making sure their dynamic ADSL netblocks are listed in the DUL..... -

London MeetupAhh, the London Meetup, what a story...
IIRC, ~130 people RSVP'd for the Pitcher and Piano London
/. meetup. It was the 2nd largest after Toronto when I checked. About 10 people showed up. =/ It was a great night though. Dave Green from NTK came along...and sold t-shirts. (I bashed you for selling t-shirts again! but at least I plugged NTK=)I was hoping, but didn't realistically expect that ~130 people would turn up, but the people that did were great to talk to. We talked about lots of geeky things--as you would imagine. I met some people I had only read about before and really enjoyed myself. Plus there was, of course, lots of beer. I only regret having to leave around 11 to get my train home, when the party was moving to Pizza Express! (Dave's pathological addiction). All in all it was a great night, and I would like to do it again sometime.

Re:How I'm planning on celebrating Friday...
Amateur. The BOFH would ruthlessly torment the user by resetting the password to something vaguely resembling line noise before he'd even sniffed the first lager of the day.

LOL graphics
Sorry, but this has to be one for NTK's habitual BBC graphics mock-fest. The asteroid depicted is somewhat larger than Earth's moon.

Re:Probably already fixed
I just tried it. I sent the list from NTK to my Yahoo account in HTML format and what I sent was NOT what I got.
What I sent:
eval => review
mocha => espresso
expression => statement
javascript => java-script
jscript => j-script
vbscript => vb-script
livescript => live-script
And what I got
review => review
espresso => espresso
statement => statement
java-script=> java-script
j-script => j-script
vb-script => vb-script
live-script => live-script
This is not cool. Whats next? *'s when I tell someone to goe F*** themseleves? -
I interviewed for mi2g
...for a web dev position with cross training to network security (which I was, and still am, very interested in.) This was in 1998, IIRC. The head geezer is one D.K. Mattai. He told me they did consultancy for a lot of City (financial) firms, including info-sec work, and that I'd be paid a small basic (about 20K IIRC, not much even then) with substantial commission on any sales I made. Between the man himself, his dodgy "lounges" microsite idea (he wanted a "carlounge" site, a "videolounge", etc, but had dodgy ideas about advertorial as a revenue stream), the very non-technical, "hobby job" feel of the place (I only met him, and saw little evidence of anyone else using the rather flashy offices in Battersea - right on the Thames in fact, not a cheap location!)... just weirded me out a bit. I remember walking along the embankment afterwards, looking at the sun on the river and thinking "I know I hate Logica, but I'm not sure I trust this set-up - in fact I don't think I'd take it if he offered me the job." He tried to pressure me into signing up on the spot, too, IIRC. Oh yeah, and he thought NT4 and IIS were the bee's testes for secure servers.
Anyway, over the next four years or so I kept coming across sitings of him in Need To Know. Search for mi2g or "D.K. Mattai" and you'll see what I mean. He puts up some new FUD release every six -12 months, and presumably reaps some consultancy fees from the credulous and ill-informed. The other day I saw he'd even got himself onto the BBC with some nonsense "survey" about virus attacks by Al Qaeda... before that, it was anti-globalisation
protesters who were going to make the sky fall.
In short: nothing to see here, move along please. -

Wouldn't that be ALL of the time? Delete their files, erase their account, and lock them in the tape safe.
"Bastard Operator from Hell" articles here... Enjoy. ;-)

I saved my previous company $60K with OpenSSH
The "security" admin there wanted to load F-Secure on everything.
Except he didn't know how to load it. I was tasked with "implementing SSH..."
I loaded OpenSSH on all the Sun boxes (90+). Loaded up putty for all the developers and started shutting off telnet/ftp.
The F-Secure sales rep called me to see "how things were going".
I told him we were going to go with OpenSSH. He asked about support... I laughed at him. 2 weeks later a major hole surfaced in SSH
(OpenSSH was not vulnerable to this one.) and F-Secure was the LAST vendor to come out with a fix, ala 2+ weeks later.
I have OpenSSH running on my HPUX box, all my Sun boxes, all my Linux boxes, and of course my OpenBSD boxes.
If OpenSSH is good enough for Sun/HP/Redhat it ought to be good enough for your managers. If not it might be time to go Bofh on them....
Just load it on there and then tell them you *didn't realize* it was already on there.... Then stuff them in a tape safe... -
