  11. Two style of masters by CFN · · Score: 3, Informative · on Searching for a Master's Degree On or Offline?

    In general, there appear to be two styles of masters degrees: those that are more research oriented, and those that are more professional oriented. Different schools offer different ones (some offer both).

    Profession masters usually consist mostly of course work. Part of the courses will be a graduate level "redo" (the courses will be more indepth and expand on the knowledge you gained as an UG) of some of your undergrad work (usually a fixed curriculium), while the other courses will be more advanced, allowing you to study things you find more interesting.

    A more research oriented masters is similar to the program above, but has a thesis project in addition to (or in substitution for) some of the courses. It is "independent" research, you will be working with a faculty advisor as part of his/her research group.

    Usually research masters require you to be a full time student (and some even offer fellowships / assistanceships to help you financially), whereas many professional masters can be done while you are working. For example NYU offers their masters corses in the evening.

    The choice between the two types of programs depends on what you would like to accomplish, and what your time and financial limitations are. Both will impress potential employeers. I'd give a slight edge to the research masters, because you will have something very interesting to discuss with interviewers, and if you present them with a copy of your thesis it will be impressive. Also, certain "research" type jobs might want to see proof that you could do research before they hire you.

    If you do a research degree, you might be convinced to stay on (or continue somewhere else) and get a PhD (and, you'll have a better sense of what one is like), but it is definitly not a formal stepping-stone. Most PhD program will take people straight out of undergrad, but will require them to do some general course work and obtain a masters en-passant. Having a masters already might help reduce that course load, or at least make it easier.

    Incidently, once an object gets an atmosphere, the surface temprature (sun side), is likely to be cooler, allowing more of an atmosphere to be supported.

    Why do you put Sokal in the same group as Schon? Schon was hedging the data to get prestige and more funding (most likely). Sokal was criticizing the social sciences for their lack of rigor by submitting a parody --- which they published without any fact checking.

    So let's get it straight: Schon is a talentless hack; Sokal is a dedicated scientist who wants to see more people acting and thinking rationally. If you don't believe me, check out his website. From personal experience I can tell you that Sokal is a good guy. It makes me sick to see people like you lashing out without even taking time to learn about what you're talking about (actually, people like you were the motivation for Sokal writing that piece.).

    Since this discussion goes back to Sokal's hoax, I recommend looking at Sokal's own work. His own papers are largely about obscure properties of lattice models in statistical mechanics. For much of this kind of work, it is far from clear whether it is relevant to any real physical system, or whether some of the assumptions under which they are proven are even mathematically meaningful or consistent. In mathematics, if you start with inconsistent assumptions, you can prove anything. Sokal's own field would have been another good target for a physics hoax, although string theory clearly beats lattice methods to the punch.

    Then, Bell Lab's star physicist Hendrik Schön got caught after having published faulty data. That was fraud on purpose.

    The whole thing sheds a bad, bad light on science. I wonder why I work so hard to get my PhD sooner or (most probably) later... I think I should switch to physics.

    It seems like a small story from a small news outfit that is quite thin on anything other than Mr. Warby's hearsay. Talk about FUD... but with any news site, no matter how obscure, as soon as it hits the front page of slashdot, it is beyond reproach. That's something we should watch out for, after reading so much yesterday about Alan Sokal's Social Text hoax. In summary, he tricked a popular publication of the literary, postmodern Left into printing a hoax article of his that any amount of editorial review should have uncovered as a hoax, to the discredit of the journal, the editors, and (hopefully) perhaps some of the movement itself.

    Let's not be so reactionary that we leave ourselves open to a Sokaling - a doc without any factual basis, that goes unchecked because its conclusions agree with our mindset.

    What should also be mentioned is Slashdot's ability to make the news. We're a publication with a large circulation, that doesn't do much fact checking before our editors endorse an article. (I know that we never set out to be a reputable news site, but when google's news is referencing us as the top source on a story... I'd be happy if we just held ourselves to a higher bar.) If the Smallsville Post carries a totally unresearched article that doesn't ever leave the downtown coffee shop area, and LexLutherCorp doesn't even bother returning a comment on it, and suddenly the Daily Planet, without doing any more investigating, just decides to reprint it to its own (much-larger) readership... well, it bites when the article turns out to be crap.

    Now that it's been slashBotted, the article will probably get a response from MS PR, something along the lines of, "Don't be silly, of course Microsoft has the highest committment to customer data confidentiality, as part of our TrustWorthy Computing (TM) Initiative. All of the data we use comes from version numbers, and we leave the option for customers to completely disable the Microsoft Windows Update feature. Look at how paranoid and reactionary this bunch of misfits is. Snort. Linux users... " =)

    Let's win the spin war Larry Wall style, not MS style.

    I was going to do a research paper on something similar, but I couldn't find enough scholarly writings on the topic. My paper was going to go through how the music industry and technology interface, and how the technology and contract laws give them large ownership of music, and how if they moved to a digital distribution model (which they could) it would violate their previous business model based on artificial scarcity and monopolistic competition.

    I don't know what books you have read but I urge you to read the following two books. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them and I plan to re-read them as soon as my friends return my copies back to me:

    • Lawrence Lessig, The Future of Ideas: The Fate of the Commons in a Connected World (ISBN 0375505784 and 0375726446)
    • Siva Vaidhyanathan, Copyrights and Copywrongs: The Rise of Intellectual Property and How It Threatens Creativity (ISBN 0814788068)

    Around February 2003 you should be able to find Vaidhyanathan's new book The Anarchist in the Library (ISBN 0465089844) in hardcover. Given how approachable and clearly written Copyrights and Copywrongs is, I fully expect Anarchist in the Library to be worth everyone's while.

    Lessig's book is the more scholarly of the two, but that takes away nothing from Vaidhyanathan's excellent book. I would not hesitate to cite, quote, and paraphrase from both of them in any research paper.

    In case you're not familiar with Vaidhyanathan and Lessig check out Siva Vaidhyanathan's brief interview on Slashdot a while back. Lawrence Lessig's name might be more familiar as the lawyer who argued Eldred v. Ashcroft before the US Supreme Court on the side of Eric Eldred. Lessig has also done a Slashdot interview.

    Go pieces, once placed on the board, cannot move anymore. Chess pieces can still move from one place to the other. This means that as more and more Go pieces are placed on the board, there are less and less positions the computer has to consider.
    Chess has at most 40 legal moves possible for the first move; go has 361. The average chess game has 40 moves; the average go game has 6 to 8 times that.

    So yes, after each move there are fewer go positions, but after 80 stones have been placed (the average number of chess moves), there are still 281 moves possible. You have to play more than 200 moves into a go game before you have as few move possibilities as you do for your first move in chess.
    Go requires the ability to look at patterns rather than combinations.
    If by "combinations" you mean "tacics," you're incorrect. Tactics are crucial in go, and it's only by a solid understanding of tactics that strategic thinking is possible. It's true that the rules of chess tactics are more complex than go, but it's precisely this lack of rules and formulae that make go so hard for computers.

    Go's not nearly as easily quantifiable. You can tell a chess computer that the king is worth 10,000,000 pawns, the queen 9, bishops and knights 3 or 3.5. In go, however, the only thing giving value to a stone is its position on the board and its relation to other stones ... sometimes all the other stones.
    Sure, the Go board is larger and the possible positions are greater but then there are only three possible ``cells'' to consider: the first player's stone, the second player's stone and an empty cell. That should be easier to manage than the job we are asking computer's nowadays to do: recognize people from their faces. I believe computers can match fingerprints easily today. Go should be a walk in the park.
    Um ... this is a sad series of non-sequiturs. Computers are stunningly bad at facial recognition, even in best-case scenarios. Humans, on the other hand, can recognize someone they haven't seen for 20 years based on a casual glance. Being social animals, there's literally nothing humans do better than pattern recognition, and go is all about pattern recognition.

    I think I realize what you're trying to say, though - that there are only three states for one position on a go board, while there are many more for a chess board. This is immaterial to the game. The problem computer programmers have with go is that there's no algorithm that will reliably determine if a group of stones is alive or dead without brute-forcing the entire game. Many groups can be correctly evaluated, and computers are good at scoring finished games, but computers will happily slog ahead (and lose horribly) in games that professionals would resign in disgust.

    Read a few of these pages and then reconsider your viewpoint: Note that I'm not saying go is better than chess. I think such arguments are foolish. But, to quote myself, from a computer's perspective go makes chess look like tic-tac-toe.

    The InfoWorld article describes a secure distributed storage system, not just plain old messaging connectivity. There aren't too many such beasts around; usually it's more of a "distributed, secure, usable - pick two" kind of thing. Some of the projects that approach the goal of combining all three actually seem to sharing the IRIS award - i.e. OceanStore at Berkeley and various projects at NYU.     There are several classification techniques in the field of machine learning that are all more powerful then simple native bayes. In fact in graduate school I built one that outperformed N.B. by a significant margin.

    This is very much like Demetri Terzopoulos's work on artificial fish. His simulated fish learn to swim.

    It's not really that hard to learn locomotion in a continuous environment, where you can improve a little bit at a time. Swimming and crawling were done years ago. Basically, you formulate the problem in terms of a measurement of how well you're doing, and provide a control algorithm with lots of scalar parameters that can be tweaked. You then apply a learning algorithm which tweaks them, trying to increase the success metric. Any of the algorithms for solving hill-climbing problems in moderately bumpy spaces (genetic algorithms, neural nets, simulated annealing, adaptive fuzzy control, etc.) will work.

    There are limits to how far you can go with this technique, and they're fairly low. Gaits that require balance, such as biped walking and running, require more powerful techniques. Any task that requires even a small amount of prediction needs a different approach. Rod Brooks at MIT has explored the no-prediction no-model approach to control thoroughly, so we have a good idea now what its limits are.
