Re:Seems expensive
The idea that it costs as much as a good mobile phone is vague. Do they mean $300 models or $800 high tech top-of-the-line phones?
From the interview with the creator that someone else linked to:
PT: Any approximations on cost yet?
AL: I can hardly imagine it to be less than $200 to $300 (USD). Sounds like a lot for a keyboard, but most modern mobile phones cost about that.
I'm quite unwilling to pay more than $50 for a mobile phone personally, but $200 for this... I might do that. Though I'll want to try it out in a store first, mostly to get the feel of the keys. They'll need to have decent "grip" / not feel too weird.
Still, very excited about this keyboard. It could be the best thing since tabbed browsing. -
Re:Power ConsumptionIn an interview the designer says "possibly it will have an external power supply". Like I don't have enough power blocks and cables already.
He also says he can't see it costing less than $200-$300.

Plasma...
Plasma probably describes the remains of the poor server.
See mirrordot or CoralCache for the pretty screenies. -
Re:The fan thing... + mirrorI agree, fans themselves are not the problem. It's how they are used.
It's the stupid historical design that puts the CPU in the middle of the case, where it's the most difficult to cool. What I'd like is a CPU mounted on the 'wrong' side of the circuit board. Then you could use the entire case as your heatsink, and barely need a fan anymore.
I want big heatsinks with natural convection cooling. It's not impossible as it was done in the G4 cube at least. It wouldn't work for laptops so well though.

server seems to be slashdotted and this doesn't get it yet (for me)... anyone got a mirror?

From my knowledge....I wonder if you have any idea what you're talking about. How exactly is a current transducer (a little ferrite core which clips around a wire and allows the current to be read) going to affect the circuit in the least?
For that matter, how could he screw up the circuit in such a way as to blow the motor without blowing it up immediately? You sure can't wire the circuit to 220 volts without doing something very funny with the common wire.
IAAEE, and I've also wired my share of panels. I want to see what you have to say to justify this strange claim of yours. (And whoever modded you "Interesting" needs a clue - I'm only posting AC because I was forced to mod you "Overrated" and I'm not about to cancel it.)

It's not even a "design model". It's a "rendered model". Sweet concept. You'd spend a bloody fortune on 116 individual color OLED displays - in several sizes - and all the circuitry, interfacing, and drivers to run them. I see that they are Macintosh fans, though. -
Re:Quite a bit.I can't tell the difference between CD and MP3 192 and CD and Vorbis 128...
I agree that OGG is excellent. In fact, I can often hear weird tinny-sounding artifacts and clicks in MP3 even at 160, while OGG sounds clean. Moreover, the sound of OGG is more, how should I say this, luscious than MP3, even when I compare OGG 80 mbps to MP3 128.
By the way, you should try that compile someone did that allowed Vorbis to encode to -2 quality at 500 BITS per second. It sounded quite amazing, considering the size...
This is what I have found in my own tests. Using Audiograbber (open-source cd ripper that supports ogg, LAME mp3 and more), I ripped several tracks into mp3 and ogg at different bitrates. I found, to my amazement, that I couldn't tell the difference between ogg at 80mbps (!) and CD most of the time. Now all of my music on my iRiver iHP-120 (around $200 for 20gb player on ebay) is in ogg, at about half the space that mp3's would take, and at better quality.
Also see this comparison of OGG, MP3 (LAME 3.91), WMA8, and MP3Pro at 64mbps and 128mbps, which I didn't believe until I reproduced the results with my own encoder.

Re:Greasemap
Then it's not, as the article summary states, "a GPL Firefox plugin". If the Greasemap link wasn't Slashdotted, maybe I could've found that out for myself.
tip for those who actually try to RTFA but can't when slashdotted:
next time try mirrordot, or coral cache:
Just add ".nyud.net:8090" to the end of the hostname for a coral link. Like this: http://www.vinq.com.nyud.net:8090/greasemap/ -
Coral!
It took about a day to load, but at least it did something! Try it Coralized.

Notes
The stand seems uncomfortably high, though I suppose it's used with an external keyboard or mouse, or perhaps standing up. I wouldn't trust my PowerBook to the cardboard backing on a desk. A bit more wood could bracket it to the actual desk from behind without loss of the aesthetic.
My biggest issue is the appearance of the stand without the computer on it... it's three prongs looming over your desk space. If it could fold up, I would like it more. Of course, that would increase the cost, but I think it might be worth it.

File server, print server, router, firewall?I would have gone (that's actually what I am doing) with one double core Athlon64 + XEN and multiple virtual machines. Less space , less power, cheaper, easier to upgrade, easier to back up.
Anyway, the web server is melting

Some more information
You can find "comments" from the scene people here along with a copy of two search warrants by the RCMP for two of the raids that occured in Edmonton, Canada. (Coral Cache of the above, just in case)
Some information about Site Down can be found here.
And whoever is saying that RCMP is targetting sceners, take a look at their Strategic Priorities... My bet is that, just as it happened in the States, they are being pressured by the CRTC (Canada's equivalent to MPAA and RIAA all in one), and with that new DMCA-like law, what could possibly stop them from raping every canadian file trader like they did (and continue to do) to the US'?
