Re:ABC
I actually haven't had too many issues with ABC, but then again I never do things like multiple deletions like that one poster mentioned. My main gripe with ABC is how much RAM it uses. It will routinely take up as much, if not more, RAM as Firefox will use with many tabs open. If I want to do something else in the background, I'm out of luck if I want any semblence of speed. For this reason, I'm slowly turning over to uTorrent, which uses very little of my RAM while still keeping the same functionality. I also kinda like watching the speed chart in uTorrent go up and down and up and down and up and down...
Oh, and because of that speed chart, I was able to determine the right upload rate to allow in order to get maximum download speed, which was very helpful when redownloading the several GB of music from http://www.ocremix.org/ after my hard drive crashed. -
Re:MOD PARENT UPThis AC is right, your choice in music says nothing about your intellect
Mhmm I have the sudden need to link http://www.ocremix.org/
In this case, your taste in 'music' tells me plenty about your intellect.

MOD PARENT UP
This AC is right, your choice in music says nothing about your intellect (or morals, or political affiliations, or favorite text editor...) is just your taste in music. I don't delude myself, many of the songs I listen to have stupid lyrics but I like the melody and that's what matters to me. I usually can't pay attention to lyrics while coding (or reading, browsing, writting emails...) anyway. Mhmm I have the sudden need to link http://www.ocremix.org/

Re:One more try...
Agreed 100%. I, much like many of the users around here, love the new means of finding music online, such as great sites like Overclocks Remix and by bands such as Machinae Supremacy who publically give music out for free on their own.

Re:RPG Music
Well, many game make their Original sound track on CD. You can buy those on Ebay, amazon or other e-commerce site. It can also be found in anime and Jap specialised store. Some video game store may have some of the more popular, but rarely. You may want to search for "game OST" for more information
For remix, there is a great website entirely destined for VG remix. OcRemix -

NES/SNES music
How many people can hear an old gametune and relive the fond memories of those days? I managed to get my cellphone working with a USB cable (take that evil moneygrubbing $2/download phone company) and regularly use old NES or SNES music as ringtones. Actually, the polyphonic ringtones on myphone do a pretty darn good job of playing those midis... so it's fun to play guess-the-game when I'm with geek friends and my phone goes off with the latest ringer.
Also, if you enjoy old game tunes, check out some of the remix sites like ocremix. They've got some decent remixes of old game tunes (as well as some not-so-decent, but not everything's a classic), as well as some newer ones. -

Good grief......how can you possibly talk about arranged video game music and not mention OverClocked ReMix? Game music, rewritten and reimagined by fans (and in some cases, by the original composers), all at a consistently high level of quality.
And no, it's not all repetitive electronica. Check out this beautiful (and live) piano arrangement of Chrono Trigger's Kingdom Trial , or this quiet and contemplative, and brilliant, adaptation of Final Fantasy 6's Terra .
Or, for a change of pace, try this version of Metroid Prime's Phendrana theme. Or for sheer old-school energy, this powerful adaptation of Raiden's theme --- nothing subtle there, but god, it wakes you up.
Oh, yeah. There's also the differently good --- one author did, for a joke, A Boy And His Blob using samples constructed from the game data itself. Damn, that's freaky...

Re:The core failing of remixing...
Once everyone is doing it, then the core pieces used to create the remix will gradually dissappear.
But then someone will take a bit from here, a bit from there, and inspire himself to write something completely new.
If you think human creativity will disappear with remixes, you're quite mistaken. Take for example 'Into the Corridor of Shadows' by Nigel Simmons ( http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01212/ ). And you'll see how much creativity can be put in a "remix". -

Re:So...Idle Hands are...
Funny, I can't remember the last time I heard about a homocidal maniac running around with a swimming pool killing people.
But this is beside the topic. My point was BitTorrent does have it's legit uses. And I would personally rather hear, "Motherfucka, I gonna bust a torrent in yo' ass," than "Motherfucka, I gonna bust a cap in yo' ass," while walking down an abandoned alleyway.
The MPAA and RIAA can take care of their own damn selves. They're large, hulking, entrenched plutocracies, I'm sure that they can make it on their own. But I, for one, don't want to go back to getting my Linux ISOs, or my video game remixes, or anything the slow FTP/HTTP way. It's retarded, when I could be using BitTorrent, but for the sake of the poor record companies who's afraid that suburban teenagers won't want to pay for the overpriced shit they call music nowadays, will instead sign up for spam and search unnavigable websites for hours on end to locate that one pitiful torrent that isn't even seeded anymore and spend 1 week trying to download it before giving up in disgust.
If you want to find music, there are better alternatives out there. Ones that don't require a webmaster to risk a subpeona by putting it on his website.
And I'll bet that the 3 people who modded me Flamebait are all NRA members. I love /. where even logical conclusions are inflammatory. If you disagree with me be decent enough to argue. If you find you can't, then maybe you are the one who's wrong. -
Re:Ocremix.org legal?
Well, I know at that at least one video game composer, Jeremy Soule, has expressed his support for them and even submitted a FFVI remix of his own.
Granted, that's an individual opinion and the video game companies may think a little differently. But it's good to know that there's at least one composer who is aware of and doesn't mind remixes of his work up there. -

Re:EghI seriously doubt you own 40 legit gigs
You'd be surprised how many free, legal songs there are on the net. Oh, but you'd know this if you were doing stuff other than downloading RIAA Stuff, right?
For instance, my Overclocked Remix folder is 4.88 gig. These are mostly 128kbps mp3s.
My backups folder of CDs I own is 6.81 gig.
Also, it just so happens that having a larger player allows one to encode stuff in higher than 128kbps quality.
Anyhow, I'd like to type more, but morons like you have already cost me enough of my life and regret even firing off this response.
:/Poor, poor you. My heart goes out to you

Aw, c'mon now, where's the love for ocRemix?

Re:The Remixes, Too
Not to mention that it's a real pain for anybody who wants to hear anything but Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger music. Each game on the site has anywhere from 1-3 remixes, except for the two series of games mentioned above, which have around 20-30.
I have nothing against the music, I just have a hard time appreciating it when, in the game, there was never a smooth transition between the walking-around music and the fighting music. Not to mention, this and many other console RPGs, it was almost always the same fighting song over and over and over.
Odds are 9 in 10 that Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, or Xenogears music will be playing on their streaming radio server -

And for all those, particularly NES and SNES Final Fantasy fans, who have yet to experience the many glorious remixes which players have undertaken to make especially for the 8-bit and 16-bit era games, you are heartily encouraged to visit OC Remix's Final Fantasy game music remixes.
Personal favourites include Agony of Obscuration and The Atomizer for Final Fantasy VI, but the worthwhile remixes available are all in all, too long to list. -

Quick listI read about halfway through the thread and saw the same old stuff. I'll throw in a few off the top of my head.
- Overclocked Remix has thousands of video game remixes available for download. Due to the massive amount of bandwidth this takes up, redistribution via P2P is encouraged. In addition, they have bit torrents up of their remixes, with a total amount transferred of roughly five thousand gigabytes.
- Star Trek: New Voyages is a fan made continuation of TOS. With the amount of bandwidth a million episode downloads sucks up, they use and encourage P2P and Bit Torrent redistribution.
- The audio section of the Free Software Foundation's website has many speeches by RMS, Moglen, etc that can be shared via P2P as long as there is no modifications to the recordings. So far I've uploaded about 20 copies of their various speeches.

No offense to the VGmusic people, but...
MIDI is shit. It is the Wonder Bread of music formats. MIDI of videogame music is never going to sound anything like the actual tunes themselves, neither will it sound like a nice live instrument recording of the tunes.
For the latter, go to ocremix.org
For the former, try zophar's music section
Don't even bother with the MIDI on VGmusic. It's not real videogame music. -
Re:OC Remix! How can you forget to mention OC Remixes?
...which, of course, goes hand-in-hand with Ormgas streaming radio: all remixes, all the time, and most of it is damned good. (I recently put together a FF remix album for a friend, with four McVaffe piano tracks on it: live recordings. The guy is seriously talented.)
Ormgas is ogg powered, too. Which is nice.
I'll warn you, however, that there are about, say, infinity remixes of that song from Mega Man II. You know the one...
I was surprised to find that there are only eight Wizards & Warriors remixes.

OC Remix!
How can you forget to mention OC Remixes?
It's a massive, massive, ever-growing collection of remixes of classic video game music. Most of it is very good.
Even better, they have torrents of the entire library available for you compulsive music collectors out there. (Not entirely for altruistic reasons, it just saves them bandwidth).
I'll warn you, however, that there are about, say, infinity remixes of that song from Mega Man II. You know the one... -
Overclocked Remix
You might be interested (if you haven't heard about it already) in a site called OverClocked Remix, which has remixes (in many, MANY different styles... instrumental, techno, rock, even rap, you name it) of video game music available to download. All of the music went through a judging panel before it was posted to the site, so 90% of it is some very good stuff. Take a listen.

OC Remix
If you guys like final fantasy music or any other kinda of music from video games, http://www.ocremix.org/ has alot arrangements of different video games tunes. Don't let the name fool you, it's not filled with those lame techno remixes, it's done by tons of different people with too much time on their hands. Some kinda suck, but some of the remixes are done very well. It's worth a look, imo.
