Game Scripting!
I doubt it. 99% of the kids with those calculators only care about how to get "games" to run on them.
Now, this wasn't the first program-ish thing, but you know what was (in retrospect) a really awesome phase of my childhood?
Tribes.
The original Tribes had something resembling a Perl interpreter built into the game. Myself, I became interested in modifying other scripts to work with features in the HaVoC mod.
Let me just praise the old game again: it was so functional, people even made versions of tetris that you could play while bored defending the flag. Of course there wasn't enough functionality or tie-ins to the system to let you make an aimbot with it, but things like additional hud elements (timed grenades or flag-returns) were possible, as were featured like auto-equipping sets of weaponry, alternate HUDs for quick-selection of loadouts, etc. When I sat myself down to learn perl years later, it was practically a nostalgia trip.
Hell, I think it even had bitwise operators in there, although I never used them. Most games nowadays (like Half Life) have their client-side scripting totally neutered, which is a shame. -

Does
/. realize just how big this has gotten? i know its very much flamebait / faux par to even mention Digg - but its gone truly Viral, very nearly 6,000 digg's (thats voted for - in non dig-speak) as well as 814 comments, its now the #1 article of the year on digg. Also the site in question (www.PriceRitePhoto.com) as well as 2 other sites that seem to be owned by the same company - TheCameraMall.com and EmpirePhoto.com - are either down or incredibly slow, most likely due to dig users either using good 'ole VGET or this new fangled "Spam Vampire" thing or even just opera users checking the 'reload every 15 seconds' option. ;) I for one *Really* wanna see a copy of there monthly bandwidth bill! If you have a medical condition that prevests you from comfortabley viewing URL's that contain the word "digg", look away now... http://www.digg.com/deals/Abusive_New_York_Camera_ Store_Threatens_Blogger Also - these are a MUST LISTEN !!! http://danny.st/tmp/pricerite.mp3 http://danny.st/tmp/pricerite2.mp3 Apart from that, all I have to say is: PWNED!!! No, they probably interviewed Cats.

Thanks
I should thank the editors for actually including the link to the BBC article since a brain fart left me forgetting to include the link.
Any how. Crazy. First submission accepted for me!
But abotu the article.... there have been a couple of games I remember that I actually wanted the soundtrack. Starsiege: Tribes had some fun techno tracks that could be assigned to a level based on the map designer's settings. Also, and even better, is the Evil Genius music, which is a symphonic score straight from Austin Powers / James Bond. Great game. Great musical score.

What you say!!
I should have been more specific in my previous post. What I mean is that this is good:
In A.D. 2101
War was beginning.
Captain: What happen ?
Mechanic: Somebody set up us the bomb.
Operator: We get signal.
Captain: What !
Operator: Main screen turn on.
Captain: It's you !!
Cats: How are you gentlemen !!
Cats: All your base are belong to us.
Cats: You are on the way to destruction.
Captain: What you say !!
Cats: You have no chance to survive make your time.
Cats: Ha Ha Ha Ha ....
Operator: Captain !!
Captain: Take off every 'Zig'!!
Captain: You know what you doing.
Captain: Move 'Zig'.
Captain: For great justice. While this is not:
A.D. 2101
The war has begun.
Captain: What was that?!
Chief Engineer: It appears someone has planted bombs.
Operator: Captain! We have an incoming transmission!
Captain: What? Who?
Operator: I'll put it on the main screen.
Captain: You! You're...
CATS [with sarcasm]: You seem to be preoccupied, gentlemen.
CATS: With the kind cooperation of the Federation forces, all of your bases now belong to us.
CATS: Your ship, too, will soon meet its end.
Captain: That's... impossible!
CATS: Thanks for coming out this far. You have made it too easy.
CATS: Make the most of these last moments of your lives.
CATS: Ha ha ha ha ha...
Operator: Captain...
Captain: Operator, give a launch order to all ZIG fighters, now!
Captain: We have no time to lose. It's up to them.
Captain: All our hope for the future is in their hands.
Captain: Godspeed, ZIG fighters!"With the kind cooperation"? Can you imagine the text "With the kind cooperation of the Federation forces, all of your bases now belong to us." being used all over the signs and buildings and vehicles and even advertisments and repeated by literally millions of people with almost religious admiration? Neither do I. But sadly, this is how Japanese-English translation looks today, and Doukutsu Monogatari is no different. Sad. Very sad. Where are the old translators with just the right balance between the sense of humour and--let's face it--brilliance? Are there any new games with similar narrative style as the original version of Zero Wing? Will there ever be?

Image the World Wide Web Without Flash
People, give Macromedia some credit. Without Flash we wouldn't have some of the movies that defined a generation. Some of the classics are:
All Your Base
Yatta
Eat Your Oatmeal
This Land is Your Land
And all the other bizarre flash that lives HERE Without Flash we'd be living in a world on Animated GIFS or worse yet ASCII art. Sure Flash is proprietary, has a less than optimal IDE, and costs way to much just to make screwy videos, but it sure has brightened up the web. Additionally, Flash has given me more than one much needed side-splitting laugh. Long live FLASH! -

Serious Question -- not intended to offend
I wonder what it is about Korean culture that lends itself so well to social videogame obsession. My wife is Korean and she had an addiction to Tribes that seriously interfered with her real life. She eventually had to quit gaming completely.
I remember some story about a Korean guy playing until he actually died (of dehydration or malnutrition or something). And although data is not the plural of anecdote as they say, there seems to me to be evidence that gaming as a culture is sweeping Korea faster than almost anywhere else. When I visited there two years ago you couldn't walk 20 yards in Seoul without passing a PC Bahng (internet cafe/gaming room). People were there 24/7.
I've talked about it with my wife but she doesn't have a particular theory. Though she grew up there she's not very traditional so she doesn't seem to have any insight to it beyond her own obsession.
Any Koreans out there who have thoughts on this?
Cheers. -

Stuff you need
For tribes2, I recommend getting some updated scripts to help things out. Panama Jack has some good scripts for T1/T2. I use Writers also.
Also not sure if they removed the cd check, but I used the no-cd patch tfc_t2v24834. I would figure they would, but I actually bought 2 copies of tribes2 for lan parties back in the day. Bot play is still fun, and on 2ghz+ machines, large bot matches with AA/AF turned on is smooth.
See you on a server soon!

Flash and the downfall of art
I've always wondered why the only popular uses of Flash that spread via word-of-mouth are horrifically awful.
Badger, Badger, Mushroom.
All Your Base.
Hamster Dance.
Singing Rats
Strong Bad is marginally better quality, but it's still hardly on par with a lot of good animation out there.
What the *hell* is wrong with the human psyche?
Maybe it's just an exhaustion with polished, glitzy, perfect, tweaked-by-marketroids stuff. Adult Swim has to do so well for *some* reason... -
Perhaps this is too cliche, but....
Somebody set us up the bomb!
All your base.... -

Re:"Engrish"
You might be surprised about how bad some translations can be. Think about how many companies try to cut corners when writing documentation. If they're not willing to spring for decent writers in their primary language, what makes you think that they're going to do so when it comes time to do translations?
In fairness, the Japanese have gotten much better on the translation front than they were in the days of Zero Wing. I've purchased a lot of Japanese equipment, and everything that I've bought recently has come with well written and translated documentation. Not so some of the other international stuff I've seen. We recently got some German-made equipment at my work, and the documentation was poorly translated. It is full of German gramatical constructs that don't belong in English, and the overall effect makes it quite difficult to understand. Even though my German is quite rusty, I almost think that I could understand it better if they hadn't translated it at all.

Internet fadsThat list is way too incomplete.
I've been a hardcore netizen since 1998, when I used to dial up from my uncle's home to a text-only shell account with a 1,500 bps modem
:-) I remember waiting minutes to download a single JPEG file, then transferring it to my local machine using Kermit, and opening it up in Internet Explorer 3.0 on Windows 95, only to realise that it's the wrong one! Those were the days when I learnt to use Pine and Lynx, my favourite mail/www combo. Those were the days of Internet success stories: ICQ, Napster, Winamp. Remember ShellSock?
In a perfect geek encounter, I met bluesmoon on comp.lang.java. Google didn't even exist back then.
Now, when I look around, I see "techies" with 5-10 years of experience in the software industry and no clue what All Your Base... means
:-) Clearly, these guys have been here for the money. I, however, am here because I love it. The Internet is changing lives, and I want to be responsible for some of it. Somebody give me that perfect job! :-D -
Let's not forget...

Re:So I can't copy something I create?
I am waiting for the next SCO press conference where McBride will announce that "all your bases now belong to us".
I'm sorry, but the phrase you're looking for is All Your Base Are Belong to Us". I suppose, given their propensity for getting everything else wrong, that SCO probably couldn't get that quote right either. In any case, I think that both IBM and RedHat have already told SCO "You are on the way to desctuction".
