A bunch of Aura workstations
As in these
-
Re:Workspace disconnectThe real world is more mundane, but I did at a previous workplace have a multi-computer, multi-monitor rig. That was lovely. Now, not so much.
I'd love a 'more sci-fi' workspace, but I'd settle for a PoeticTech Aura: http://www.poetictech.com/aura/index.html

Re:First investment
And one of these desks.

Pre-Bubble Burst

The ultimate workstation

Air filtration
Rotates to avoid glare
Custom overhead lighting.
Really freaking expensive.
Everything you'd need. :) -
If price was no object...

Poetic Technologies
Check out Poetic Technologies for desks. They're more like pods. I'd love to have one of these myself, but with my cash flow it looks like the folding table and folding chair will have to suffice.

Good work stations
These are what I have in mind: http://www.poetictech.com/
-
Poetic Technologies...
...has an awesome line of tech friendly workspaces. Some of them have self-contained air circulation and they can rotate on a preprogrammed schedule to follow the sunlight, multi-monitor support, lighting, pneumatically adjustable seating with presets for multiple users, etc., etc., etc. http://www.poetictech.com/index.html

Re:Big Buck Solution
Buy and install one of these...
Shudder. It's both awesome and yet somehow reminiscent of a bad hacker movie.
Their price list is a little blank. Anyone had the benefit of a quote / delivery from these guys?
...or is it just wish-ware? -

Big Buck Solution
Buy and install one of these on your porch near the garden. I think it tracks light sources and compensates by rotating itself. Apparently it also has built-in AC as well. -
Re:Ultimate Desks?
You know, I tried time and again to find the "ultimate desk" and every one I could find, this one and the others from PoeticTech, and the harder and the more I try, the more I'm convinced that the ultimate desk is a big wooden plank at desk level that I can put all my stuff on. My computer(s), my computer screen(s), my TV, my clock radio, my stereo system, my phone, my action figures, but, more importantly, my junk.
It seems that no desk out there leaves me room for just a few cubic feet of crap. Open manuals lying on their faces, takeout food wrappings, books, piles of paper...
Of course a real desk with good quality wood is better than just a plank, but those ultra-ergonomic moving thingamajig desks would never work with me. -
The ultimate desks are sold at Poetic Technologies
-
Ultimate Desks?
For that kind of money I think you could do a whole lot better, the Aura is definatley nicer than that.
-
Re:cool desk to put all the stuff on..
I think that this might be the rotating work pod that you were thinking of: Aura
-
The best desk ever
Ok, here's my favorite high-tech toy:
High Tech Desk -
How's this for a desk?
Poetictech has some nice looking desks...they start at about $1500 for the base model, and run up to about $4500 for the high-end models with air-conditioning and indirect lighting sources. Strap on a 20" flat panel LCD's and you've got the perfect workstation for your VIP...who will set the resolution at 800x600.

Peotic Technologies Aura workstation
These guys make cooler furnature that looks halfway functional.

Rank Amateurs......as compared to these guys...I especially like the idea of a controllable light source and full control of the seating angles, pressures, tempratures, desk angles and filtered and heated airflow...and, with a powered/programmed rotating base, we don't need no stinkin' LCD monitors with an Aura or Echo workstation!
Hoo!Yah! "...120-degrees of rotation in 15 seconds," under my control! WOOT!
Seriosly, these guys "designed, developed, manufactured, and installed a modular trading pit system for the CHICAGO MERCANTILE EXCHANGE
," and, if you've ever been there, much more difficult, IMHO, the exceptional indirect lighting system for the MERC. They're known for quality of materials and effort. -

Re:Old...
I liked this idea better when it was being marketed by Poetic Tech. At least PT gives you the option to have counterspace to pile crap on.

I'd prefer on of these

Poetic Technologies
http://www.poetictech.com/
Poetic Tech has been building this kinda stuff for years and years. Definitely on the pricey side, though. -
OMGoth!!! You gotta get this!
-
Get a real desk...
A Poetic Desk!
PoeticTech Desks
All others pale by comparison and the amount of comfort and human convenience is mind-boggling. There's even room to put in tiny little fridges!
There is nothing better (that I've seen) than what these guys can do for you. A computer desk with air conditioning; a power swivel--for the whole desk just to track the sun (no sun-glare for you); specially-designed ambient lighting; ultimately adjustable seats! What more need be said? This Ask Slashdot is answered. -
Poetic Technologies
makes some neat looking all-in-one integrated work areas. No prices listed on their website (so I'll bet they're pretty expensive), but they do look interesting.

Rotating cubicle made by Poetic
Poetic Technologies makes the rotating cubicle that they are using.
Looks like they are using the full-featured Aura model. Yes, we should all have one. -
The best off the shelf computer stationThis "chair" has been on slashdot before, and I can't see what the item in the article looks like due to the slashdot effect, but this chair is the one I have been longing for......
lighting, heating, rotating sun tracking to prevent glare through the day, pre wired for its own two idependent 15amp circuts with 20 outlets, the list goes on and on.
sure wish i could by one.
cheers
-
For those of you with $20k, but no time...
...you can buy something similar
-
Why?
What geek would *buy* an ugly case mod? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? It looks like an industrial lightable for animation or drafting. Home made mods are cool because they are home made, personal and unique. If I'm going to actually buy an integrated desk/computer, it better be slick. This looks stupid. Think of all the bloody knees that will result from banging them under the desk...
-
At the risk of being boring...... just what are his requirements? You've said it has to handle vibration. I assume it has to handle dust. What kind of external electrical power do you have available, if any? If it has to run off of batteries, how many hours does it need to run? How much space is available? What kind of applications will be needed? Is he looking for a wireless internet connection? What kind of budget does he have? More specifics, please.
In any event, since this is Slashdot, I'd recommend a Linux based beowulf cluster in custom wooden cases with a long T-1 cable trailing behind. Don't forget to weld a nice chair to the tractor too! Maybe a nice desk would be useful too. Heck, I'd just park the tractor and make a fortune by answering Make Money Fast emails!
-
The ultimate ergonomic workstation
Poetictech has always had really cool stuff... it's not DIY... but it's very slick.
-
Re:Use a Door.
Why, when only a few thousand more you can have one of these...?
-
Slashdot calls it "the ultimate chair"
When it comes to office furniture, one's got to mention these:
Slashdot: The Ultimate Chair
Poetic Tech: Working environments for high tech professionals
They don't come with beer fridges but can serve as inspiration, that's for sure... -
This is cooler
While i think that Adam's cubicle is cool, I still think that these are still cool. I think they were once featured on slashdot, but search is still down.
-
Forget the cubicle....
Persuade the powers that be to buy you one of these!
-
Why just the chair?
[Dundie Accent ON] You call that a Chair? That's not a chair. Now this is a chair.
-
Not Stokke, Not Aeron, POETICTECH
Everytime an Aeron story comes out Im reminded of how much FREEKIN cooler these chairs are. Sure they're almost as expensive as a luxury car, but a Mercedes doesn't have inetrnal fiber ports or room for four moniitors!

Almost my dream workstation...
Now - I want one of THESE, integrated with one of these from the Ultimate Chair article the other day - I think the Aura model, with the air curculation and rotation and customizable overhead lighting... yeah... this is getting closer.

I want to work in style...
I sit at my computer most of my waking hours. I stare endlessly at a flickering screen whether I am actually working or just geeking out.
Since this is the way it goes... I may as well do it in style with the Aura, kindly supplied by Poetic Technologies.
At the impressive price of $7,769.00 USD (or for the economically challenged (me) $11,340.00 CDN Funds (Don't forget the GST)) this puppy will obviously fall under the Unlimited catagory.
A nice comfortable catheder and a bowel bag and I won't have to function as a human again.

I want . . .. . . the Aura from Poetic Technologies. Although the price tag ranks it right up there with the B1 bomber, it would still be fun to find it under the Christmas tree (or in place of it).
