They played us for suckers!
Our own earthly cephalopods are pretty darned smart. Given the right conditions, it's not difficult to imagine a similar species attaining greater intelligence. Of course, such an intelligence, having developed in such an alien environment, would be radically different from ours. As Larry Niven says, there are brains out there that think just as well as yours...but differently.
Squid, cuttlefish, and other similarly baleful creatures are all members of the cephalopod family, characterized by HUGE EYES, BEAKS, INTELLIGENCE, and AMBITION. -
Re:Unions - are they needed?
Yes, but the problem is, if ALL employers are equally awful, then simply "finding a new job" doesn't do you any good. That is the case in much of the U.S.
But not all employers are awful, hence, there's no problem. If all employers in Philadelphia are awful, move to Pittsburgh. This is not a difficult problem! Now, there are some really good employers. They are few and far between. The VAST majority of corporations are more than happy to screw their employers at every opportunity.
If you really can't get a job at any good company (which I find hard to believe), then start your own company. People do it all the time. The people who started the giant companies of today weren't geniuses; they just had the balls to do it. I helped somebody start a company last year. It's not rocket science.
I don't want to hear any whining about how it's impossible to work for yourself when it's possible to run a successful webcomic without drawing anything. I mean, come on. No, you don't need to work for Initech to survive. Just provide something that people will pay money for, and make sure you bring in more money than you spend -- that's all it is.That's what unions are for. Yes, many unions are corrupt and greedy and irrational. But so are many corporations. You NEED a union as a check on the power of the company/employers. Period.
Funny. I've never been in a union, and I've never had a problem at work that unions could have solved. I've known two people very well (an S.O. and a coworker) who have worked in unions, and they both tell me that unions suck ass. I jokingly suggested that we unionize once, and was told "no, as bad as it is here, you seriously do not want to go there -- it'll be just as bad, but management will be unable to fire the bad people".

I wouldn't mind ads so much....
If they wouldn't keep taking away from my content. When roughly a third of the timeslot of my TV shows is being given over to advertisements, it makes me mad. When internet ads are huge and intrusive, I block them so I can return the website to a more functional state. There are well-designed webistes out there whose ads I leave intact, such as Dinosaur Comics, and last.fm. IndieClick, one of the groups that advertises on those sites, have done a good job of keeping their ads small and unobtrusive. I've made it a point not to block anything of theirs. I think if website designers and advertisers worked together to make less intrusive and more appealing ads, I would leave them alone more often.

Re:Finder!
What is NSFW about Finder? (This isn't a snarky comment; I honestly am unaware of what you are referring to.) I'll concede that I haven't read much of it, but to me it certainly doesn't scream "NSFW" at first glance.
I'll concede that Schlock is a fine comic if one enjoys a comedic twist on military SF, which, much to my surprise, I do. As long as we're recommending webcomics, my favourites are Scary Go Round and its precursor Bobbins, Sinfest, and dinosaur comics, though the latter is certainly pushing the envelopes of "webcomicness"(but that, of course, is part of what makes it so great). -

Been there, done that
It went like this:
T-REX: Dromiceiomimus, what have you done today? I'VE just made a machine that makes people age, with God's help!
DROMICEIONIMUS: So what's the symbolism there? Is it called "The Life Machine" or something?
T-REX: No. No, that would be good but this is actually just a machine that leaks invisible cell-decaying radiation.
UTAHRAPTOR: Holy cow! Why would you build something like that?
T-REX: B-Because God told me to?
UTAHRAPTOR: That's insanely dangerous, T-Rex! Geez!! I'm leaving. I don't want to be around a dude who has a LIFE-DESTROYING MACHINE nearby.
T-REX: Man, you're right! What was I thinking? Well, you can REST ASSURED that I'll be taking this up with God at my earliest convenience.
BUT LATER, ALL IS FORGOTTEN:
T-REX: So yeah! That's why I could never see myself using the word "twincest."
GOD: That's fair.

Re:"Begs the Question"
Indeed, 'Begging the question' is when what you are trying to prove is assumed implicitly in one of your premises.
See Logical Fallacy Comics @ Dinosaur Comics for further (humorous) explication. -
Re:"Begs the Question"
Better explanation
"Well, I suppose that begs the question, T-Rex: if it's used more often to mean "raises the question" than "a fallacy of presumption", doesn't that suggest that the definition of the phrase has evolved?"
"NO IT DOES NOT. What is suggests is that everbody sucks except me!" -

QwantzFirefox renders all the sites I visit adequately, except http://www.qwantz.com/. Qwantz is a zany web-comic where the punchline is often in the image's title tag. The tag's often quite long and Firefox refuses to show me all of it! I have to right-click it and view the image info. It gets tedious fast.
IE shows me all the tag from just hovering over the image.
What's up with that?

comics are blogs now?
Yeah, it's weird what's being considered a blog. My comic ( http://www.qwantz.com/ ) is listed, and I would be the first to argue that there is a difference between a daily comic and a weblog.
I think what people would want more is a way to exclude blogs from regular Google searches - is this an option? -
Dinosaur Comics: comic or not?
Possibly one of the greatest webcomics since the inception of webcomics is Dinosaur Comics.
Strictly speaking, it's not a comic, because the art never changes. It's identical day in, day out, and that's completely intentional. Read a few, and you'll agree with me that it is quite a comic regardless of how it is not a stereotypical comic. -

Re:Quantity over Quality
Does it even require that the author be human? Some people get away with just putting different text over the same image every day, it wouldn't be too hard to automate that; either build up a few hundred strips worth of sentances, or just randomly generate them...
-
Re:Well I think JWZ put it best for Lynx users.
Interestingly enough, some people have learned to use this to their advantage. WebComics like Quantz.com and Achewood.com display the alt-text, and use it as a second punch line for the comic. I don't see how having the alt text pop up on mouseover makes the site look terrible. I mean, if he was really concerned about Lynx users he wouldn't create a site entirely made of images....

Re:Comics on the web just aren't the same thingAnother thing that comics on the web can do well that just doesn't work well on paper (or, at least, I've never seen work well) is exploit their digital nature.
For instance, I do a comic strip at qwantz.com where the exact same images are used, without modification, every day. Put that in a print book and you can be a little put off, because it does look so computer-generated. But on a computer screen, it's natural.
Remember how ugly Frank Millers Dark Knight sequel was? He and his colourist Lynn decided they'd stop trying to make computer colouring look like real colouring and just go all-the-way with digital. The result was that the vast majority was turned off ("it looks so artificial!" they say). I'd venture that if it were published online, they wouldn't bat an eyelash.
Oh, and while I'm talking about online comics... you should also look at a softer world which is sweet and sad and you're going to fall in love with it.

dinosaur comics
First, a plug: people interested in small press independent comics might be interested in my dinosaur comics. They are a study in genre and form!!
About getting comics to the masses: all I'm intending to do is self-publish and sell over my web site (and in a few comic book stores locally). When the price of self-publishing is so small, and you can distribute so easily, I don't see the real allure of professional printing. You can even get things professionally bound for a couple of dollars at your local copy shop. -
Another good comic! And slightly more up-to-date, AS WELL AS FREE, are the dinosaur comics I write. They are topical and philosophical, like you!
New comics every day! It is perhaps the best use of the internet... ever?

Re:Dinosaurs not killed by cometThe way the dinosaurs were killed is clearly explained here, in comic-strip form..
What's more, it's in Choose-Your-Own-Adventure comic-strip form.
