Tabs...?According to the release notes, there's one major bug that'll stop me from using tabs. Quoth the page:
While using tabbed browser, visiting a page which calls the window.close() method of JavaScript, the entire window will close, as opposed to the tab which contained the code.
Which affects quite a lot of sites -- many web services open and close status windows automatically.
The BugZilla article at http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103452 (cut-n-paste, BugZilla doesn't like /. links) also has a few interesting comments at the bottom, it's fixed and targeted at 1.01 apparently, along with a big DHTML performance fix.
Also, the forthcoming XP service pack 1 will only allow you to remove the icons for browsers, a Reuters article here notes:
A new button on the Windows start menu, titled "set program access and defaults," allows users to choose between four default options: computer manufacturer choice; Microsoft only software; non-Microsoft software; and customized settings, which is the default choice.
So basically, it's nothing new for those of us familiar with deleting shortcuts and running the Mozilla installer.
Anyway, congrats to the Mozilla hackers on getting this far! I can't wait for the next few releases. Another bonus -- now the APIs are frozen, it should make projects like K-Meleon (a light MFC UI for the Moz engine for Win32) a lot easier. -

Wow, connection refused this time. Here is a working link to the Reuters story.

Reuters has an article too.I spotted this yesterday at Retuers, which has another article on it. One of the more interesting quotes from Jim Cullinan, lead product manager:
Service packs are meant to fix critical compatibility, reliability and security issues in a product until an updated version of it can be released.
"We've never issued a service pack for a general consumer" product, he said.
Hmm, I guess it must have been a case of mistaken identity when I downloaded that "Windows 98 Service Pack 1" at home from that renowned hax0r site "Windows Update".
Good to see Microsoft on the ball again, I'd hate to see them spreading FUD to look like they were going to extreme lengths to comply with the antitrust provisions. -
$183M InternationalReuters says:
Ticket sales for the new "Star Wars" movie were out of this world, racking up $183 million at box offices worldwide in the first four days of release. According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones," grossed an estimated $116.3 million across the United States and Canada.

china reuters article
i know noone will read this because ppl stop reading comments after it spills into multiple pages but i was jsut reading reuters and came upon this article about how microsoft is moving its production to china. thought it was interesting...
The move to China would help trim production costs because many of the machine's electronic parts were made by Asian companies, meaning those components would no longer need to be shipped to Europe for assembly. -
We complain about yahoo...We complain about Yahoo, then we complain that nobody is doing anything about it, then we send them lots of traffic. Why??
Let's link to the same story found on Reuters. That's where Yahoo got the story from: The Reuters article

States Cancel Windows Demo. [OT]a Reutersarticle reports that the litigating states have withdrawn their presentation of winXP embedded. The Judge waxed sorely pissed when the states produced reams of documentation late in the game, and the M$ lawyer said they would need an "indefinite" period to formulate a response. Apparently the states think the Judge is ready for the trial to end.
I hope bill chokes on his hamburger.

The Three Elements of Microsoft's Success
From this article:
"The (states' ideas) would undermine all three elements of Microsoft's success, causing great damage to Microsoft, other companies that build upon Microsoft's products, and the businesses and consumers that use PC software," the world's richest man said in his 155-page written submission.
Hey, wait a second...

I was curious, so I fired up AIM, and added SmarterChild to my buddy list and after toying around with it for a while here is the exchange we had:
SmarterChild: OK, fine.
So moving right along...
What else is happening?
[me]: nothin
SmarterChild: K, no prob.

Don't slashdot Yahoo!
After what they did with their privacy policy, I think we should direct our hits to Reuters. You're getting the same story; Reuters wrote it and Yahoo got it from them. And they've got less advertising! If we don't like what Yahoo did, why are going to their site (and effectively giving them more advertising money) when an alternate site has the same story?

Lets see...

Re:Dell
Yes you did - about this article here
The /. article covered this quote from reuters
"Citing internal Microsoft memos, the nine states also said that in 2000 and 2001 Microsoft pressured Dell Computer Corp. DELL.O into dropping plans to offer the open-source Linux operating system on some machines it sells."

A Few Kinks, A few Comments
As the summary here shows there are still a few kinks in the system.
While I have to agree with some people that this isn't in-depth reporting I do think that it is pretty interesting AI. When it comes down to it the problem is not that a computer might be summarizing our news. The problem is twofold.
Firstly people are not always inclined to look beyond summaries. When faced with typical time constraints people prefer to look at summaries because they do not have time to search across a dozen sources and articles. This is why USA today became big in the first place. Nothing there is more than 1 column long. (Incidentally did anybody else find it hilarious that this system "summarizes" USA today who themselves summarize other news sources?)
Secondly much of the news is the same. News is big business and most major news media tell the stories that sell. Because they are all targeting the same markets they tell the same stories and in the same ways. Therefore there is little difference between CNN, the NY Times, etc in terms of tone and "facts". Especially since much of "their news" comes from the same wire services such as Reuters. Fox News is different but that is because they have abandoned the mantle of impartiality and become all conservative all the time.
In essence this system is perfect for the internet news style. Breif summaries of facts followed by more "in-depth" leads that we may peruse as we wish. The real question is, when will this begin drawing on sites like Indymedia, The Register and /.

secrets, right...
Ok, let me get this straight, the LA.Times gets a secret reports about a possible nuclear fiasco and no one smell trouble? I mean, how often does the LA Times gets secret reports? I wouldnt think something like this just leak its way out of congress just like that at this time. According to reuters the Iran's influential former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said on Sunday the United States was trying to intimidate other nations with reported contingency plans to use nuclear weapons. But then again, Powell Says Secret Nuke Report Was Routine Planning accordings again to reuters. Where is the love?

Re:Campus networks
heh. Too bad they don't offer financial aid to geeks that need T1 lines.
Interesting that this story comes on the same day as the House passes the Broadband legistlation bill. The article makes an excellent point: Hollings, champion of the SSSCA, will probably kill it when it gets to the Senate.

Nokia Working with TIA little more interesting is that TI is working with Nokia to counter Microsoft's entry into the cell phone market. They're working on a standard that will be available to their competitors. Article here. Microsoft is working with TI and Intel too (that article is named Microsoft brings wireless to Windows, I think it should be more like Microsoft tries to toss Windows on Wireless... Who do you want to hang up on today?)
Too bad nobody seems to be taking any open source based options for cell phones...

Re:Give the author credit. Not only did he scam most news agencies, he drinks Guinness.
But did he scam Reuters? Their website shows no trace of this story, in any category, even "Oddly Enough" -- which is where I would expect a story like this. Searching for the credited author Kevin Smith reveals about a dozen stories filed from Ireland, but not this one. Nor is there any indication of a correction or retraction to a filed story.
So the question becomes, did Reuters even issue this story, or did someone hack the wire?

Re:What the Deal?
What is the deal here. I can only find a coloum clearly marked Advertising. This has been done by UK sites for a while by the way. I feel sorry for Yahoo as I thought they were quite cool earlier on but now has pretty much nothing but "milk toast" to offer
The deal is, that from time to time, you'll click on a link but instead of being taken directly there, you will be taken to an ad page. After a short pause, the page will refresh itself, and actually be the news story that you want to read. But if you click on the ad page, it's like clicking a banner ad. It makes the web a bit more like TV advertising (which is what marketroids have been wanting to do for years, cos they understand TV a lot better) except that you don't know when it's going to happen. Lots of sites do this, even Reuters. Gotta make your money somewhere in these tough times for the dotcom scene. -
Will this be the product integrated with Real?
If you're not in the know, Real and TiVo are in bed with one another which struck me as odd seeing as how Real isn't exactly known for being a champion of the Linux cause and that's TiVo's blood 'n guts.
At any rate, I'm glad to see that non-standard, non-open digital "rights" management fomats are no longer solely the domain of Windows *cough* WMA/V *cough*. -
Re:3G phones
Also note this Reuters article. 3G phones began shipping to the US last wednesday. Sure, it'll take a little time for the carriers to get their CDMA 1x towers going, but it's very close to being available in the US.

SK incident
This arrived in my mailbox:
``Many have heard by now of the SK disaster. Here is what I have learned:
Apparently an ID tube, most likely on the bottom of the detector,
imploded and set off a chain reaction destroying much of the detector to
about a depth of 2 meters or so below the current water level.
Apparently the top 7 supermodules and the top are intact.
The destruction is reported to be extensive with about 7000 ID and 1000
OD tubes destroyed. The various layers between the ID and OD are
shredded. There appears to be huge piles of glass and other debris on
the tank bottom. Waveshifter plates are shattered, cables perhaps
shredded, etc. The water is full of antimony and other hazardous
chemicals.
ICRR is shortly holding a press conference along with Monbushio (Sp?).
Reporters are milling about outside the mine entrance.
''

Re:US ArroganceIt's funny. Laugh. Humor is rarely accurate, much less P.C.
Yes, the British and Canadian contingient is recognized and appreciated. As is anyone else willing to send their money and their aircraft and their boys (and girls) to open a can of whoop-ass on all those who would destroy freedom in the world.
A cynic would note that the U.K. would likely not exist in its present form had it not been for its former colonies coming it its rescue about sixty years ago. Me, I'm not so certain, but I'm bloody sure that if it hadn't been for Tojo's insistience that Yamamoto awaken the sleeping giant, France would be speaking Russian these days... (not German; Hitler, like Napoleon before him, made the mistake of starting a land war in Asia after Easter... and the Red Army would not have stopped at the Rhine without Patton (and Monty!) there to keep them from it.)
So you Tories will excuse us Yanks a little tongue in cheek arrogance, no? After all, the RAF's next fighter aircraft will be built in either Marietta, Georgia, or (hopefully) right here in Seattle....
I will give the Brits credit, though. They have some of the best news services in the world.... unlike the crap we generate here in the States.... (I think it's funny that perhaps America's best news network is run by an Aussie... )

And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

What for?
It is amazing how people are talking about how to storm Afghanstan. No one even mentions the facts that Bin Laden and his group are SUSPECTS. There has been no single evidence that they have commited that horrendous act.. and yet every one forgots that as they talk about how to wage a war. They have forgotten "why". They are forgotting now "is it the right target?"
I am not going into some long rhetoric. Just read the facts below.. and tell me why no one made an issue of them yet?
Of the 19 people listed bhy FBI as those responsible for the hijacking, some are alife. They were not even in the US.. yet we still hear about this list and no one makes an issue. Read below..
Of those 19:
* Amir Bukhary: He died more than a year ago!
* Abdulaziz Al Omari: He is alive and was not even in the US at the time of the bombing.
* Saeed Al Ghamdi: He was in Tunisia at the time of the incident. Sorry, the link I have is in Arabic.
* Ziad Jarrah: This is a playboy. Furthest thing from a Muslim, let alone a fundamentalist. and might have been just a passenger.
* This is not offically confirmed yet, but Abdullah Al Shahri's father said that his son is alife and was not in the US (according to AFP news.)
* In the media reports, several of the guys in that list of 19 were reportedly seen drunk in public pubs a few days prior to the hijacking. Is this the behaviour of a respectable Muslim.. let alone one who supposedly wants to "martyr" himself!!
It seems most of these guys were just victims who happened to be Arabs. The FBI jumped on this chance to point the blame at Bin Laden and his group. Either because they could not find the actual people behind this crime or because they did find them but thought that this was a golden chance to get Bin Laden once and for all while the world stands behind them.
What is more, read this news item regarding a taped phone conversation between a flight attendant one board on of the planes that hit WTC and a colleague. particularly, pay attention to what she said in regards to that the seat numbers for the actual hijackers do not match with the seat number of the suspected hijackers.
Why is everybody still convinced that it was Arabs/Muslims who hijacked the planes. Why does the US government want to invade Afghanstan despite this very shady allegation and the very reasonable request by the Afghans that they be shown a proof that Bin Laden was responsible?
Something very fishy is being cooked. The Afghans, and probably even Bin Laden seem to be victims here as much as those people who died in the WTC and the other tragedies.
The ability of the American populace to find the actual truth and to find (and revenge against) the acual perpetuators of this crime are dying out with the media propaganda being waged now. Guys, do you want to kil innocent people and send your countrymen to Afghanstan to probably die trying to kill those innocent people?
You claim you have freedom of speech. I respect that, yet, with the media machine running full speed and glossing over the facts in favor of the "official line". Can't you stop for a moment (at least in respect for those who died in the tragedies) and ask: Are you revenging against the right people?
One more thing. I read unconfirmed reports that more than 4000 Israelis/Jews who work in the WTC did not report to work at the day of the attack. Can any one confirm? -
Re:Two Lost Over Iraq...Downed craft was rebel helicopter, say Taliban
Ananova needs to update their news more assiduously if they wish to be a legit news source.
I checked every source I could think of to verify Ananova's uncredited story, finally found the same story repeated at Afghan News Network, and credited to Reuters; their posted story was dated 9-22 at 3 am (who knows what time zone, I am assuming Greenwich).
If you go to Reuters website, the version of this story now available, presumably the last-filed Reuters report, is dated 9-22 at 11:47 am.
"Despite earlier contradictory statements, Taliban officials said they had established that their forces had downed a pilotless drone aircraft over Tashkurghan with machinegun fire as well as a helicopter near Dara-i-Suf." So the latest claim is they shot down one of each.
Ananova's performance in this regard is worrisome, and the situation is likely to grow worse....any sites that do not have the resources to update news reports to the most reliable versions have no business relaying war news.
At any rate, I would verify any future news reports from Ananova before assuming them to be accurate.

Not freedom. It is rational thought that flees!
More than a week has passed since that horrendous act. As more time passes, I become more amazed at how Americans are becoming more and more prone to brain washing by their media engine.
I am not going into some long rhetoric. Just read the facts below.. and tell me why no one made an issue of them yet?

It is not your freedom that is being taken. It is your very mind and ability to think independently and arrive to conclusions independently. -
Re:A jihadI wonder if ABC is just being stupid or did they decide to leave out the crucial bit to rally support for war-mongering. Well, anyway:
Officials of the Islamic movement moved quickly to say that the deputy chairman of the Taliban Council of Ministers, Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhond, was not in a position to declare a holy war, or jihad, and a final decision lay with a council of clerics due to convene this week.
"I would like to tell my people that our jihad will be formally resuming against the Americans..."
Read it at Reuters instead.
