Official Site
An official site is up (but no content yet):
http://www.rockstargames.com/sanandreas/
One thing worthy of note: the script in the logo for the words "San Andreas" is in that faux-English "newspaper-title" font that is popular among Latinos who put it on the back of their pickup trucks (often along with a decal of the virgin Mary - I don't get it either) and what not. Dunno if that means anything...

Re:I can't wait for GTA: Boise
If you download your free copy of GTA 1 from the Rockstar web site ( here ) , you'll find that "Liberty City", "Vice City" and "San Andreas" are the names of the three playable cities from that game.

Re:"massive"?
You forgot the GTA London: 1969 expansion for GTA2.

They're only trying to ban it in stores
So, Rockstar could sell it via their website or catalogs or whatever. Fans would still be able to get the game if they really wanted to and knew where to look. However, there would be a gigantic sales hit if it disappeared from store shelves. Of course, this is only if Rockstar loses the court battle. I would like to point out just as a side note that the original GTA is available FREE at Rockstar's website here. See this

Re:Well why not?
SO you think anyone should just come in and be able to buy GTA 3? or that new Manhunt game? I think not. I also think they shouldn't be able to buy any R rated movies. I'm all for freedom, of Adults, but when Children are invovled we need to be cautious and it's better to error onthe side of caution.

False advertising
Sadly, if you go to the images page, it is apparent that gladiator is not actually all that bloody. It's not a member of the elite class of games where you can hack your opponent's limbs off, for example. There are no explosions, so bits of grizzle don't spray everywhere like in FPS games. No internally bits are ever on the outside. It's not even funny. Where is the violence? The nastiness? Where is the dark foreboding nature of of the world laid bare like scraped flesh covered in dirt and pebbles?
No, what we get is a series of repetitive blood textures added to the grounds around where a traditional penetration damage model is taking place. Nothing new here.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some Happy Tree Friends to watch. -

It _is_ a Dragunov.
Check another picture of the sniper rifle, here. It's clearly a Dragunov, although only God knows what specific variant it is.
Nine and a half pounds, fully loaded.
Dunno about you, but all the real women I know can carry nine and a half pound weapons without any problem.

Ass-kicking women
Great. Another use of that ludicrous invention of Hollywood: The Ass-Kicking Chick. Screenshot Notice how the lady obviously does not have the upper body strength required to even hold up the weapon. These aren't women, they are nothing like women, and it's only sexy if you have never held a conversation with a real woman. Of course, I suppose that the Chip makes American women unattractive enough as is. Maybe some guys find these girls to be an improvement. Anyway, the silliest aspect of the whole mess is that it makes our culture inclined towards idiocy like women in combat.

Bout damn time!
Snake is a great character for a video game. Plus the gadgets in the movies would also be good to develop. I wonder what engine this will use, but I'm guessing it'll be akin to the Doom 3 engine.
The character art looks pretty darn cool too. If they do this right, it could generate the kind of popularity Vice City did, yet with a Fallout flavour. -

less-thinking-more-blowing-stuff-up?
Hey, I find a well-rendered explosion or the graceful arc of blood spraying from a flesh-eating zombie to be a very powerful statement of man's... um... insignificance in the face of the world's indifference... um
Ah, hell, just give guns, cars, and innocent bystanders, I'll make my own art: six wanted stars with a chainsaw. -
Re:Mission Accomplished (sort of)
Yes, it's worth a minor laugh but will it really make people want to buy the game? Most likely not. Probably will turn a bunch of people off from buying it.
I don't know about that. If they actually did this, I could imagine it turning people off, but just hearing about it makes one think "Well, that's wacky. I wonder if this Vitua Tennis thing is any good."
In fact, if I cared about tennis at all, I might go and look at some reviews of this game right now. Of course, I won't, because I really only care about games with guns, cars, and innocent bystanders. ;) -

Suggestions
Strategy:
Civilization III (and the Play the World expansion) is extremely good, and addictive. Better than cheesy poofs. The month will have passed before you notice if you get it ;-)RPG:
Also, as another poster has written, Planescape Torment is good. D&D-based RPG, in a totally weird and twisted world. You can get it very cheap, but it's definitely a good game. The Baldur's Gate series is good too. Icewind Dale is not, it's got a plot more linear than a yard stick. Fallout and Fallout 2 are good too.RTS:
Starcraft (with Broodwar) is good, even though it's old. Don't play it on Battle.net, the people there generally suck. Warcraft III is good too, but it seems quite a bit harder.Puzzle:
Frozen Bubble is very addictive.Sorry, but I don't know much about action games, because I hardly play them, but you might want to check out the Grand Theft Auto series. I kinda liked GTA.

Re:The impact of this decision
Result? Top seller in Norway that year.
GTA3 (PS2) was a top seller in every country you could get a PS2 in. For many people (Including me) it was a large reason for buying the PS2.
Then GTA3 (PC) was released; again a top seller (although not as much as the PS2 version).
Then GTA3:Vice City, solely on the strnegth of GTA3, outsold the original GTA3.
Both games achieved game of the year awards from almost every public reviewer.
GTA3 is vastly superior to pretty much every game released at the same time as it. Although the graphics weren't as good as they could be, nobody cared, because the gameplay, plot, and freedom you have as a player far outweigh the graphics. The fact that the younger gamers are finally realizing this, at least for a brief moment, is, I feel, a Good Thing(tm).
I have many games that Rockstar Games has distributed. They distribute amazing games, plain and simple.
Has anyone here ever played State of Emergency? If you want a game to go on a mindless killing spree to clear your mind, throw away GTA3 and GTA3:VC and get this game, its fantastic; much more fast paced and the music gets you more pumped.
N+1 Cheers for Rockstar! -

Re:Why Doom Sucks.
What's wrong with dark, depressing and dystopian? I like dark, depressing and dystopian!
It is true that many mind-less first person shooters have spawned into existence since the release of Doom, but certainly this is not the only sort of game that is unleashed upon humanity today.
As for 3D adventure games, I liked Under A Killing Moon a lot. It has a compelling storyline, great graphics and yes, a dark, depressing and dystopian 3D environment. It's awesome!
More recently, I finished Sierra's Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned. It too has beautiful 3D graphics (for its time) and a great in-depth plot. Lots of things to explore and figure out, and I think it does justice to the old adventure genre in that respect.
As for RPG's since Doom, you may have forgotten about Baldur's Gate, which is-- God forbid-- a 2D game, as is it's successor Baldur's Gate II, but if you want 3D exploration, let's have a look at Neverwinter Nights or maybe you've got more interest in mindless hack & slack ala Dungeon Siege. Let's not forget the more recent hits in mindlessness; I think good fun can be had with Grand Theft Auto 3, despite it being mindless, but if you want something more intelligent in that vein, have a look at Mafia.
So, no. I don't think the gaming industry is totally down the drain. It could be better, it always can be. There's no such thing as the perfect game for everybody. -
Banned Games
Among the banned games named are Resident Evil, Shadowman, Street Fighter, Turok, Perfect Dark, Quake and the old stalwart of the moral moronity, Doom.
Yeah, yeah. What about Grand Theft Auto?
Do you think that's banned too? -
Re:GTA3 + The Sims = SimActivist?
State of Emergency. It royally sucked too, even on a shoot-em-up/rack up body counts level of entertainment.
-
Re:I think $$$ is to blame.
with the only "rock star" development house left being ID
I think you're forgetting one other.
I agree that mega-corporations getting into the act is fucking everything up, though. They aren't people who think to themselves "would this be a really cool game?" They are rather thinking to themselves "Can we keep making money by releasing unoriginal, shallow, and buggy products?" It's all about the bottom line to them. Not that game companies shouldn't profit and profit well, but they need to do what the smaller companies have to do....innovate.
P.S., if you're a native english speaker, I weep for the public education system. Your grammar and spelling are the worst I've seen in ages. If you're not a native speaker, well, you're speaking better English that I am of YOUR language. -
Anger Processor-o-Matic- Slicing a troll in Ultima online, score 3:
- Driving over an innocent in GTA III, score: 30, extra 15 for ending the victim's pain with shotgun.
- Creating you own game to plan and execute the murder of your teacher, score 99, extra 1 for doing it with a chainsaw. Is that what they wanted say?

There's one company MS needs to buy...
If they buy Rockstar, THAT would be impressive. I'd consider an X-Box if they did that. Instead, they're buying Rare, who's hot new game sounds like some really, really horrible, drug-induced nightmare belonging to a 5 year old, combined with every other generic Japanimation-type game ever made.

truckstops america
Go here and see all the 12v tv's you could want. I'm sure they have DVD players as well, or will soon. Or just get an inverter or diesel generator.
With the fish plant.... Why do you have computers there? It's just more stuff for me to blow up when I return from 8-ball's shop with the garbage truck. Seriously, that's what offices are for. If you must have something, look at medical enclosures.

Virtual Murder Isn't Illegal
Just check out Grand Theft Auto 3 or any of the other hundreds of other games.
I don't think any course of action that's been tried to date (castration, drugs to kill the libido, and negative re-inforcement) have had any significant effect on pedophiles.
As long as no one is hurt, live and let live. -
WowFrom the article:
The classified text, however, is shot through with a worldview transformed by Sept. 11. The NPR coins the phrase "New Triad,"
and laterIt calls for improvements in the ability to "exploit" enemy computer networks, and the integration of cyber-warfare into the overall nuclear war database "to enable more effective targeting, weaponeering, and combat assessment essential to the New Triad."
These guys have been playing way too much GTA3. And we trust them with Nukes?? What, is the next great post-911 idea to drive around Afghanistan in nuclear Fish vans? -
Lots of addictions...
My current addictions are:
- Grand Theft Auto III for PS2
Combining racing, shooting, dark humor and wonton viloence in one game. Plus, you get to be the bad guy for once :). - Tekken Tag Tournament for PS2
Practice at home to play Tekken 4 in arcades and provide maximum pain to my adversaries. - Final Fantasy X for PS2
Ooooo... pretty... - Yahoo! Eucher
No one else in my family plays, so I play with complete strangers. - Unreal Tournament on PC
Team Deathmatch and Domination with 3+ teams is good. Mods like Jailbreak and FragBall are also highly time-consuming. - Diamond Mine
Great little Shockwave game. I play this constantly at work :)
Wow, looking at the list, it's amazing that I'm bored all the time...
- Grand Theft Auto III for PS2

Re:It's the games, stupid.I couldnt agree more. The reason I bought the PS2 back in October was that their selection of games on the PS one was simply outstanding. Each genre had its standout title:
- Sports: Madden
- RPG: Final Fantasy
- Driving Sim: Gran Turismo
- Fighting: Tekken
And now, we are in the midst of an ultimate gaming revolution with titles like Ico, Grand Theft Auto 3, NBA Street,Devil May Cry, and SSX Tricky available. PS2 games seem to be at their peak, but according to Playstation magazine, no one has harnessed the full power of the ps2 as of yet.
It was published this month (in playstation magazine) that Sony has introduced a resource usage program thingy which gauges how much of the ps2's power is being used. It was first thought that Gran Turismo 3 maxed out the ps2's power but this new tool from Sony only showed 25% of the ps2's power was being harnessed. Say what?!!? It was written that Sony will be providing this optimization tool to third party developers.
The best is yet to come people.

Re:Grand Theft Auto 3GTA3 got the graphics/interface right.
Except that you cannot get 1st person view when you're walking and 1st person view is pretty much unusable when driving too... Makes it really hard to shoot enemies when the camera points 90 degrees to wrong direction!
Oh did I mention that this game [GTA3] is very non-PC and not recommended for people under 17?
From the Grand Theft Auto web site:
Grand Theft Auto returns this Fall on the Playstation®2 computer entertainment system. It will appear on PC CD ROM n Spring 2002.
So it's not PS2 only forever... Though I have to admit that the game is damn good. By the way, age limit is 18 in here, Finland.

Grand Theft Auto for PC
Just as a quick note, Grand Theft Auto 3 will be coming out for the PC sometime in the Spring of 2002.
You can check out the website here.
