I just LOVE Vladinator's website!!Fun information for my Trolltalk friends!
MFS aka Mofo Spork doesn't want people to know his real e-mail address.
Why not? Does he not want people to e-mail him? What's up with that? e-mail MFS and let him know he is loved!
I just LOVE Vladinator's site! Especially the "fash" section, where I learned to cut the bottom off of an old shirt to use as a hair enhancement! Oh, and the "dance party" photos!
Of course, don't forget to read Vladinator's emails! Here you will discover how truly difficult it is to decide what to do on the weekends... have a pizza party? A fash party? Go to the mall with all of your friends? Have a sleepover and call boys on the phone?
In short, if you haven't checked out Vladinator's site, you don't know what you're missing!Well,
Just to keep everyone informed, Theresa lost her job with the Slovenian Woman's Union, and as a result we are losing this apartment. Needless to say, between work and now looking for a place on short notice, I just simply will not be around at all. I will not be available by IRC or anything else for most of the next week. If anyone needs to reach me, the best way to do that is to call me at my In-Law's, where we will be staying for at least the next few weeks. The # there is 815-723-4796. My Scottlockwood@hotmail.com address will also work, but I do not know how much longer the @attbi.com address(s) will work as I do not know if they will have cable modem's where-ever we land. We will be staying in the same area, or moving a little north.

CE/PocketPC version
OK so I'm posting this far to late to get it modded up, but anyway....
For those of us Pocket PC owners who've seen that it's been ported to Palm and are upset with the lack of a PocketPC version, well there is one!!:
Nethack 3.3.1 for Windows (98/NT/2000/CE)
This kicks ass! Handheld support for ARM, MIPS, and SH3, good job Alex!
Here's a mirror of the ARM version, but please don't hit either of 'em too hard, or the boys might get some bandwidth bills from their ISPs.For more general PocketPC gaming news, check out Pocket Gamer
There's also an OpenGL version of Nethack which looks pretty damn cool (for the heretics who don't want to play in ASCII). Screenshots are here.As for other cool retro stuff for the Pocket PC, check this out: FreeCiv port of Pocket PC, not yet released but coming soon hopefully. Here are a few screenshots to keep you going 'til they give us something to download (watch out for the popups though)
Happy gaming,
ManxStef

Re:Unfortunately
Teflon's invention is not related to the space program. Integrated circuits were not first mass produced for space exploration. They were first mass produced to control ballistic missles. While this is similar to rockets used for space exploration the intent was not to make scientific discoveries, it was to be able to deliver a nuclear weapon payload anywhere in the world.
While I do appreciate NASA, I think that the department of defense has had a much larger technological impact on our lives (digital computers, IC's, internet among other things). -

The new version of morpheus on the gnutella network is awful. After 2 hours of trying, i had not one successful download. You can't search by file type, bit rate, etc. Grokster's spyware can be "neutered" - follow instructions here.

DDC
"Display Data Channel, a VESA standard for communication between a monitor and a video adapter. Using DDC, a monitor can inform the video card about its properties, such as maximum resolution and color depth. The video card can then use this information to ensure that the user is presented with valid options for configuring the display."

Not always a heavy load that slowsI don't know about you, but my service provider (RoadRunner) was really awsome (400k/sec FTP on average!) put bandwidth caps on and service has been progressively slower (12k/sec FTP average
:-P), probably due to the same people who where using alot of bandwidth to begin with taking longer to do whatever it is they where doing...due to the damn bandwidth caps. Plus they hiked the price.I'd quote their website but I can't seem to connect to it right now... heh.
Point is, we pay more for what is guarenteed to be less, and there is no other choice here. Time/Warner is the only cable company and DSL here is through Verizon, and judging from seeing the people who have it (and they live a few blocks from the CO), i dunno why anyone would take DSL at all. 56k is cheaper and seems to run the same speeds. I hope the extra money goes into more bandwidth/improving service and not into Time/Warners advertising budget.

Doesnt make much sense
I work for Road Runner, we dont care if you are NAT'ing. In fact its better cause it saves IP addresses. We just dont support it, meaning dont have any reps to troubleshoot that type of connection. Not sure why Comcast would take that route. If a customer wants to do that, then fine. They only get a set amount of bandwidth anyway.
Perhaps they want to charge for each IP address you would need by NOT using NAT. -
Arguments for shn
After collecting 60 Gb worth of mp3s, I switched to almost strictly shn format
over 2 years ago. Here is my reasoning:
1. Stick with a lossless format if you can afford the bandwidth and storage
space. Plan for the future, when bandwidth and hd space will be much
more plentiful.
2. I can definitely hear the difference between lossless and any compressed
format at 128 kb/s (that annoying wavery sound), and even at 256 kb/s (barely)
on very delicate passages and high-end speakers.
3. Also, if you want to reprocess the music (dehiss, dehum, equalize, normalize,
respatialize, etc) you experience a much more noticeable degradation in the
sound if you start with a lossy format.
4. shn is the standard format for trading music.
It is a lot less work to store in shn then have to decode and reencode every
time you make a music trade.
For lots of good links on shn format, see my trading page at
http://www.vsl.ist.ucf.edu/groups/vtb/TradeList_ 20 01-11-25.html
(Now that I've come this far, what the hell, trade requests here
.

Re:hm... explosive?
Accidental DHMO(dihydrogen monoxide) inhalation statistics. Source.
* There are more than 6,000 DHMO inhalation fatalities per year in the U.S.
* It takes only 20 to 60 seconds to die from DHMO inhalation.
Another source reports worldwide fatalities at 140,000 per year and that most victims are CHILDREN!
We must protect the CHILDREN! Ban DHMO!

Easy Solution
Get RoadRunner from AOL-TimeWarner (the lesser of two evils). It's faster than Qwest's basic 640/272 DSL service and MUCH less expensive.

Road Runner
I have my home computer on a Road Runner connection to the internet. I use it to host my domains, and I have it configured to both accept and send email to the internet without any problems.
I was going to post the original url for the acceptable use policy which was like a page long and it didn't say that we couldn't run mail servers on RR, but they seem to have moved it to here which seems to be a much longer and more specific TOS. But on the bright side, it still doesn't really mention that you can't use your own server to send and receive email (hopefully I didn't overlook anything). -
Re:there's no holdup of broadband where I live
Perhaps you will want to re-read Road Runner's Acceptable Use Policy. Nothing in there states that you can't use a router. Heck, I have a router and about 10 machines behind it. Time Warner doesn't care. Road Runner doesn't care. My neighbor's don't care.
Now, on the other hand, Time Warner does care if you're picking up extra IP addresses without the use of their DHCP server. That's a given. They also don't "support" routers. So if you call in for tech support, you had better know your own hardware well. In my case, I've got a Linux box (soon to be BSD, I think). The guys in support tiers 1 and 2 won't be able to help. The guys in tier 3, though, understand Linux quite well.
That said, I don't care if Time Warner "supports" my hardware. I only had to call them because of my outage and it started something like this: "Hi, my name is Ryan Clark. My phone number is XXX-XXXX. How can you help me? Well, it seems that I can't connect to the DHCP server in my area." Sometimes there's some info on their screens that states what the problem is, and that helps. In my case, I was the first one calling in--and so I had to go to tier 3 support. At no time, though, did any representative say that I was violating the terms of service by running a Linux router. In fact, the tier 3 guys seemed quite fine with it--like that's what they do at home themselves. -

It seems I have been mistaken though - I've looked and it seems that all use 2 pairs except for T4 and Gigabit Ethernet over copper... the best I could find was this reference, it makes no mention of duplex, but does give some information.
I have no idea where I got the idea that full duplex required extra pairs - I must be such a dumbo. -

QoS
I was thinking about this last night. Internet access is pretty much ubiqitous in our lives, and (at least for me) is absolutely essential in order to function. Certain resources, like gas, electricity, and telephone service are considered essential, and the gov't sets standards and requires availibility of these services. These services are required to be availible all the time. However, IPS's can get away with spotty QoS, ninexistant customer support, and can just close up shop when they go broke. Shouldn't internet access be provided, subsidized, or regulated by the gov't as is any essential utility?

Up next, Jon Katz reviews the Dr Seuss classic Fox in Socks while Taco and Hemos tackle the Encyclopedia Brown series. Re:Does anyone remember the 80's Mario cartoon?
Oh HELL YA! The show itself was pretty cheesey, but the cartoons rocked! I used to wish they would only do Mario cartoons on Friday and Zelda the rest of the week. Man, those were the days. Did Link ever get a kiss from Zelda? I can't remember.
And steeljaw: that cereal takes me back. Good stuff. Hehe, the Nintendo Cereal System, awww ya. Nerds were good too, I tried to find a pic, but no luck. I did find this link though. It gave me a surge of flashbacks from my childhood. Maybe the 80s didn't suck that bad after all... -
Re:Guilty until proven innocent? Gimme a break
The point is that if you are paying money for a service you expect that service. They expect the money and you expect the bandwidth. If an organization which apparently can't even accurately determine the source IP of the traffic they are monitoring just needs to point a finger to get your access shutdown then that seems to be a violation of the contract you have with the ISP.
Only on Slashdot would people take broadband access as an inalienable right. This has nothing to do with innocence, guilt or the jury system, and everything to do with the terms of service (ie, contract) that you enter into with the ISP.
Let's take a look at that contract, shall we?
If the author's service was with Time Warner, then she was probably a Roadrunner user. I'm on RR too, and here's an exerpt from the agreement I've got with the NEO (Northeast Ohio) branch - I would imagine hers is similar if not identical:
Time Warner Cable NEO Division and ServiceCo each shall have the right at any time to change or discontinue any aspect or feature of the Road Runner Service, including but not limited to content, hours of availability, Equipment and System Requirements. Either Time Warner Cable NEO Division or Subscriber may terminate the Road Runner Service to Subscriber at any time.
You can find the whole load here
Oops. Looks like the ISP can pull the plug any time they want to, for any reason they want to, and there's exactly jack squat I can do about it.
Eeek! My precious high-speed pr0n, er, business net access is at peril! Whatever shall I do?
Make sure that I'm not dependent on RR for my business needs, that's what. A 56 modem and a serial cable is pretty much all I need to do that. And luckily I can remember how I used to do things before the cable modem was around.
Time Wanker and the MPAA did this pair a favor - now that they understand that their broadband access can evaporate they'll (hopefully) get some backups in place. Perhaps there's a lesson for all of us...? -
Do It Yourself CableFrom what I could gather from Road Runner's Site in my area this is the quote I pulled.
Will I be able to install the cable modem and software myself? This level of service is not currently available. However, in the near future we will be initiating a "do it yourself" program, which will allow those subscribers who are technically inclined to install their own modem and software.
However, in the past when I was debating cable vs. dsl I am very positive that I saw that you could get a significant savings if you self installed. I managed to get this info by further digging. Before you purchase and install a cable modem yourself, be sure to contact Time Warner Cable Customer Care to ensure that the cable modem is compatible with Road Runner systems. Click here for information about retail installation. Which will essentially tell you that you just need a DOCSIS compliant model. An example of this is the Motorola Surfboard modem - this is an external model - and in most cases is the one that RR uses themselves.
Unfortunately, after recently making a phone call about getting cable [my DSL provider is going up the creek (this is the 2nd time now)] I found that they no longer offer discounts on the monthly charge for those who provide their own modems.
On the install issue- this is what I came up with:- Installation if Road Runner does not supply NIC or USB adaptor $79.95
- Installation if Road Runner supplies NIC or USB adaptor $99.95

Economic Theory for InformationThank you. I agree with all of this. Capitalism is built around capital because it was put together for industrial purposes. It makes it easy to put together a factory to make material goods. It works very well for that. But now, much of the economy is going to a data/info economy. Big Oil and Big Steel is getting replaced by Big Software and Big Media. This can't be done with the capitalist/industrial model of expensive machines and cheap, unskilled labor; your capital is now mostly expert labor. Capitalism doesn't handle this natively. We have the kludges of IP law in place for that. This worked well enough when IP was a minor part of the gross product, when copyrights were applied to books and patents to motors. However, the economy is resting more and more on these kludges, and the theories of capitalism are going right out the window. So where do we go from here? Capitalism is becoming obsolete, but what better thing is there to replace it with? I have yet to see successful results with any flavor of communism on a national scale, but that's the only other well-known modern system out there.
I don't suggest this as a solution, but a springboard to think about further solutions. Look here for a discussion of something called the Stone Society. Enjoy!

Re:Road RunnerWhile Road Runner isn't blocking (my cable modem light is still going nuts even when my computer is off); it is part of their Terms of Agreement: no e-mail servers, no web servers, no port scans.
I did a tcpdump this morning to see what the hell was going on with my modem's data light...it's been blinking like mad even when the computer is off for almost a week now. Check of the website indicates that they're going through and detecting customers with open ports 80 and who are "infected" (with IIS, I presume
:-) and will be shutting off those customers for a 12 hour period Aug 9, I guess so they can make sure everyone applies the patch to their crapware.Anyway, here's the relevant bit from Time Warner in Columbia, SC.

Re:Road Runner
Whoa! That's different from what I just read on my AUP. I note that the top of the page you link says Kansas City. The service that I use is "Road Runner of the Mid-South" and it's AUP is at http://www.midsouth.rr.com/local/terms/tos.shtml
It's different! Hmmm... Note the additional bullet point that disallows you "to host or operate any type of server including but not limited to web, ftp, gaming, mail, wingate, etc. Running such software/hardware is STRICTLY prohibited for residential and business service." The bold, all-caps emphasis on "strictly" is original to the page, I did not add it.
I wonder if they would really insist that I not turn on Web Sharing on my Mac OSX box, especially since it is actually Apache!
-
Re:Road Runner
I believe this is the road runner "acceptable use" policy. It doesn't say anything about not being able to run a web server.
Is there some other "terms of service" agreement that disallows personal web servers? -

Ugly? If you think that girl (which I presume is one of his daughters) is ugly, you either date Nathalie. Portman or you have absolutely no eye for beauty. But enough flaming (well, I'd call it defending an innocent damsel *grin*).ReidMaynard was absolutely on topic: I think he tried to be funny, in a cynical way, but the fact is that still most 15 year old boys do not care about anything more than that the girl next door notices them (and they mostly don't succeed). No, as matter of fact this article talks about a very small minority of younsters that do exceptional things. People forget that there have been bright kids all over history that acquired astonishing knowlegde about particular subjects. These kids are no exception, only being on a hip "medium" makes them more exposed.
I can't believe I'm posting this...ah, so what...it's only Karma!

Internet Movie ProjectAs far as collaborative, web-based artwork, the Internet Movie Project has been going on for a while now. There is also the IRTC Group Image Project which is a collaborative, web-based art endeavor.
Of course, in both of these cases, the projects are not being done blindly; everybody who contributes has some idea of the bigger picture (pun may or may be intended; it's early yet).

Re:This needs to be investigated by the Feds ASAP
Ok, duffbeer703, you may have a point. I guess I was responding to the brief, abrupt way you were making an if:then statement involving acts of way. Such words are not to be bandied about loosely, even in flamewars.

FIRST Pictures and small movies - KSC Regional
HERE are some fairly high quality pictures and a few low-res mpeg movies capturing the action from the FIRST regional held at Kennedy Space Center earlier this year.
Pay special attention to movie 3 catching the fine art of balancing the bridge - a key component to high scoring in this years challenge.
