Re:What about English?
I guess all I'm saying is that is time to reserve mathematical computer language to mathematicians, and leave normal computer language to normal people. Seriously, how many people do you know who say "2^3.1459" when ordering a couple of cheese burgers?
Umm... that example doesn't even work, because ^ isn't even a letter or a word. It's a symbol... the kind you use when writing, not speaking. You speak English, yes? On that note, plenty of people where I live say (linked because Slashdot doesn't support unicode) as a greeting, and yes, that is the 100% correct form. You don't seem to be able to tell the difference between a written letter and a spoken sound; and frankly, you have clearly never programmed before either. There's a reason why it is the way it is.

Re: Snap Circuits disappointment
Ditto here. The wife got the grandparent to get it for the kids. It is a bit of a disappointment. I wish it at least had a couple of different resistor values, a few caps, and maybe a discrete transistor or two. In terms of documentation for the "IC" blocks, the manual did contain some description, and the PDF on their web site contains the internal circuit diagram (well, sort of. The inside of their custom ICs are still "black box".) I had one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... as a kid. It was wonderful. I wish my folks didn't get rid of it after I moved out. My brother had one o these http://cba.sakura.ne.jp/ex/mx1..., which I inherited after he moved on to bigger and better things. Both of those beat the pants off of snap circuits.

Re:So, unless it's cheap, what is the point?
Lets say I want to create a custom system that is mobile, doesn't need a screen but needs more IO capability than a phone/tablet. For these types of applications it is a perfect solution. It is not going to compete with things like laptops, servers, phones, tablets, but will compete with other embedded systems for one off development. A solution that came to my mind is one that someone already did with a BegalBoard for a Real Time Kinematic system. Instead of buying a commercial device to meet my amateur needs at many thousands of dollars I could build one for a few hundred. Also a system like this lowers the barrier for entry for embedded system development and provides more hardware power than something like the micro controller boards that exist. Not being a hardware guy and not wanting to get into being one these are the type of devices that I would want to develop projects for since all I need is stuff that connects over USB or other fairly standard connections, instead of a sack of components, bread board, and soldering iron.

Re:Enough with the gimmicks.
3D is a gimmick. Higher frame rates are not a gimmick 60FPS looks objectively better than 24FPS. If you don't believe me download this video convert it down to 24 or 30 frames per second using handbrake then tell me what you think. Sorry for the shoddy video it was frustratingly the only 60fps 1080p live action video I could find on the internet. If someone else wants to post a better sample I would appreciate it.

Opera allows me to do great things
Really, the Opera web browser has allowed me to do great things throughout the internet, with hundreds of tabs open, and consequently more bookmarking being done, and session management, I do not know how productive I would be with Firefox alone. Commonly, when stranded on Firefox-only systems, I am burdened with odd tab loading impairments and generally limited to acting like I am doing literally one thing and one thing only-- no queuing up content or strands of thought, etc. Even with the hierarchical vertical tabbing enhancements through the TBE extension akin to iRider, my productivity seems to drop. So, I am glad to see more (good) publicity for Opera.

The Japanese have already done this
America seems to be a bit behind the times once again. Researchers at the University of Tokyo accomplished this nearly 3 years ago. Here is a good site (in Japanese unfortunatley ^___^) describing the computational methods that they used to derive the stochastic model for phase changes. This is very exciting stuff.

Easy way to fix the title tags:
There is an extension to fix that behavior:
Here. I agree that it's annoying that they haven't fixed it in the browser yet, but at least they offer an extension system so users can fix annoynces themselves. I also like Opera, but if they had a bug like this, would there be any workarounds available for you? -
Re:UI suggestion
ctrl+tab behaves different from alt+tab - alt+tab in windows orders by history, while ctrl+tab orders by left-right order. So, there's no "last tab I used" command in FF. It's hard to get a balance here tho - windows accomplishes the odering visibly by showing a pop-up of the program-tabbing history so you can see the order you cycle through.
Stack Style Tabs fixes that. :) -
Re:Blank tabs ruleTabbrowser Extension does this. And they seem to do a very nice job. I've been having my home page pop up on new tabs for a while now, and I've been able to rearrange tabs too, without using the 1.5beta. And yes, you can choose blank or last as options as well. Heck, you can even type the url into the current tab and get a new tab created for that address.

Re:What a terrible "review"
You need to install Tabbrowser Extensions, my favorite Firefox extension.

Re:I've used palm and I've been very happy...
After reading your post and staring blankly at the screen for a few moments in disbelief, I can only come to the conclusion that:
A) You're a troll
B) You're drunk
or
C) You work with a bunch of saboteurs that intentionally crash their Treos to get paid downtime.I've had my Treo 600 for about 2 years, now, and have experienced none of the problems you've described. The GP's description of no more than 1 crash per month is very accurate. Anytime it has crashed, it quickly boots right back up. I've never had to send it in to be serviced.
For those that think that a Palm is just an "organizer" and a PokcetPC is a "pocket computer", don't buy into stereotypes. I use my Treo as a computer. I have an ssh client installed that I use frequently to work on some servers I admin for. The thing came with a capable web browser, but I have many options to install something else, if I want. I also have a Samba client that works great, an FTP client, a VNC Client, and an Instant Messenger. Somebody already mentioned the superb movie player TCPMP, but that's not all, I also have a Video recorder that makes use of the Treo's built-in digital camera. I use a perl script I found to convert the video to mpeg1. I use a Photoshop-like image editor that has support for complex things like layers and blending modes. My Treo is also my mp3/ogg player and I use it to listen to podcasts in the car. I read ebooks and even
/. using Plucker. I take audio notes using SoundRec. I even have a Python interpreter, and can code native apps in C right on my Palm. I won't even bother to mention all the games that are available. You can google for them yourself. I've seen apps out there for viewing/editing Word Docs and Excel files, but having never had a need for that, haven't installed them. -
Re:Tabs: go extension hunting
First make sure that you uninstalled Tabbrowser Extensions. If that does not work the a manual clean up of the extension is needed.
http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/doc/installation.html .en#uninstall
or
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_extensions# Uninstalling_manually -
Re:Scared?
Combine all this with TabBrowser Extensions and you have almost unlimited control. You can group tabs, move individual tabs around, give color to certain tabs, have multiple rows of tabs, change the tab width, change the position of tabs, change the tab Title, Auto reload tabs, save multiple browsing sessions(ie bookmark only if you need to) and tons more options.
Its got so many options that some people consider it too much and counter productive. However, when used properly I find this extension to be indespensible. When you first install this and restart Firefox, it will ask you what level of settings you want. Unless you feel adventurous, choose Minimal settings. Btw your settings can be saved and exported for use on another computer. -
Basic tabs
I find the tabs in Moz too simple, and use this addon, Tabbrowser Extensions http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/tabextensions/index.
h tml.en .
But I know that MS will make the tabs so simple that they are essentially useless, doing the common thing of dropping functionality to the lowest common denominator (much like movies and other products - companies are just too scared of potentially excluding someone because they "don't get it") -
Re:Why is it better?
1- Installing TBE is retarded, even TBE author advises you NOT to install it
2- Although it's slow and bloated, TBE install is quite light since the package is "only" 281kb
3- Let's add TBE and Web Developper (fully localized version, the english only one being only 110k), we're reaching 500kb (280+230), ok, now what? As a fairly extensive extensions user (I have ~30 extensions loaded) my extensions folder (with uncompressed extensions y'know, not packaged ones) is a mere 3.5Mb, compressing it yields under a megabyte of data... -
Visual histry plugin
Nice, then I won't have to compile mozilla to run the Visualhistory plugin: WebMap It's a wonderfull way to get a grip of your surfinghistory, which IMHO isn't that good by default. Sadly the guy who made it is form Japan, do most of the doc is quiete unreadable for most people.
I believe that browser history has been neglected for a long time.
-
Re:what makes it better are the plugins, my top 5
Have you tried Tabbrowser Extensions? While I don't think it specifically opens links that have their targets set as _new or _blank in new tabs, you can set it to open any link that would normally open a new window in a new tab instead, which is basically the same thing.
-
Re:They're overhyping a bit, aren't they?

There's Tab Browser Extension which allows complete customization of everything tab related, as well as Tab Killer which eliminates them completely.

Happy.I never thought I'd be happy to see a Citibank popup. I'm running Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0) with the TabbedBrowsingExtension set to use a single window.
Well, that's one alert I'm safe from. Whew.

Re:Also
Try the Tabbrowser Extensions (http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_tabextensions.html

Re:Also
Just install the Tab Browser Extension for Firefox. It supports moveable tabs, saving tabs when you close, multiple rows of tabs, etc. Firefox lacks them because not everyone wants them, and they're available with a simple extension download for those that do.

Scheduled autoupdate?I tried Firefox today. Being an Opera7 user, I expected quite a bit and Firefox came up short. Specifically, I miss the scheduled autoupdate of the various tabs. I have several sites I frequent, like slashdot, that I update every 30 minutes.
This extension will help you. Just sort through the multitude of menu options and drool (you can even set autoupdate to occur slower on nonactive tabs!). Tabbrowser Extensions Rule. Now, if you want it easy, and builtin to the browser, stay with Opera. It's a nice browser. Just be careful when you say "firefox doesn't have X" because chances are, it does, and it exists as an extension because the maintainers want a small sleek mainline build.
-
Re:Opera's still my favorite
The Tabbrowser Extensions extension allows repositioning of the tab bar. It also offers many other neat features, so you might want to check it out.
-
Re:As an Opera user
If you don't like Firefox's default tab handling, you should try TabBrowser Extensions which pretty much lets you customize every aspect of their operation.

Re:Tabbed browsing not important
I too think that this should be a standered feature of FireFox. I used to ban an Opera user untill Firefox, and the "open all links in tabs" was the best feature. Here is the link to make that happen in FireFox. http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_tabextensions.html.

Re:20 IE Windows?!!!
tab browser exensions will let you do that. it is among the more heavyweight extensions and could slow your browser down a lot. mini-T is much more sprightly and will let you *copy* a tab into another window. No doubt there are others --

Re:Security issue?
I'd like to see something like this, for instance, in Firefox's security settings near the Javascript permission settings:
Block sites from:
[X] Disabling right-click context menus
In Firefox:
* "Edit" -> "Preferences"
* Select "Web Features"
* Click the "Advanced" button next to "Enable JavaScript"
* Uncheck "Disable or replace context menus"
(This was bug 86193, checked into the code in March. It's in 1.0PR)
As for single-window mode, there are plenty of extensions. Try the one called "Tabbrowser Extensions", for instance. -
Re:I call fraud on SCO's website
Try this extension - it shows ALT tags as tooltips in Mozilla, just like in IE.

Re:My Wishlist for FireFox
I just did it... but it may be a feature of TBE.

Re:Better handling of extensions
The one I hear most often is Tab Browser Extensions. Personally, I find tabs in Firefox barely useable without it.
