Somewhat recent rambling (2016)...

https://yro.slashdot.org/comme... (oh look he's been here before. And still AC!)Wow this guy has been an Anonymous Coward for a fair while now. You'd think with something so great as APK Hosts File Engine 2.0++ they'd be posting using an actual URL and not putting blanks into it and using a real name or business details. I question the pudding he's eating
;)It reminds me of a really good bit of humor...
"In the beginning was the Plan.
And then came the Assumptions.
And the Assumptions were without form.
And darkness was upon the face of the Workers.
And they spoke among themselves, saying, "It is a crock of shit, and it stinketh."
And the workers went unto their Supervisors and said, "It is a pail of dung, and none may abide the odour thereof."
And the Supervisors went unto their Managers, saying, "It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it."
And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying, "It is a vessel of fertiliser, and none may abide its strength."
And the Directors spoke amongst themselves, saying one to another, "It contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong."
And the Directors then went onto the Vice Presidents, saying unto them, "It promotes growth and is very powerful."
And the Vice Presidents went unto the President, saying unto him, "This new plan will actively promote the growth and vigour of the company; with powerful effects."
And the President looked upon the Plan, and saw that it was good.
And the Plan became Policy.
This is How Shit Happens."

Re:That explains a lot
So how many hits did it take for some creative "genius" to come up with the Juicero?
I think you misunderstand. Anyone on LSD would take one look at the concept of the Juicero and very likely swear off the entirety of global consumerism. So no, no drugs were involved with Juicero. Now, LOBSTERO on the other hand.... -

Re:So Let Me Get This Straight
This is actually a pretty big deal. Stolen from this post by a ReactOS developer:
why is command prompt so, command prompty i guess
it all goes back to a terrible, terrible architectural choice they made way back in Windows NT 3.1
Win32 consoles are implemented in user mode. god knows why simple, safe consoles are a user mode thing, while a ton of badly written GUI poo poo was violently forced down kernel mode's throat, but they probably hoped that text consoles were going to be a fad? nevermind. this alone wouldn't be an issue, in fact if anything it would make providing multiple implementations of console windows very easy, but they had to double down on the awful, and make console windows run in the user-mode part of the win32 subsystem (basesrv.dll), which runs in a hyper-privileged process, csrss.exe. how privileged?
* the system is immediately shut down with a fatal hard error if it terminates. regular hard errors (like "put the floppy back in, idiot", "executable imports non-existing function from dll", etc.) are passed from kernel mode back to csrss.exe, which turns them into message boxes (when you use MessageBox with the MB_SERVICE_NOTIFICATION flag, you are actually raising a STATUS_SERVICE_NOTIFICATION hard error); they are even interactive (you surely remember the infamous abort/retry/ignore), as in the thread that raised them is blocked waiting for your answer. the caller can even be a kernel mode driver (see IoRaiseHardError). fatal hard errors (passing OptionShutdownSystem to NtRaiseHardError/ExRaiseHardError) on the other hand can't be sent to anyone and result in an immediate shutdown (pretty fast because only drivers are notified, user mode processes are just killed) followed by a bugcheck. so technically it's wrong to say that terminating csrss.exe causes a BSOD because a BSOD is instant, while when you kill csrss.exe you can e.g. hear the disks flushing. little known fact: before Windows XP, crashing on termination of a critical process wasn't a kernel feature; instead, the startup process (smss.exe) would wait for the termination of csrss.exe and winlogon.exe, and hit you with a hard error if it ever returned from the wait. you'll notice a flaw: nobody watches the watcher (kernel don't gaf). you could totally kill smss.exe and then csrss.exe without a BSOD. back then, the debugging APIs were implemented in user mode for some loving reason, and for an even more inexplicable reason they were a RPC API and smss.exe was the server end, so killing smss.exe would have no visible effect, except breaking debugging until a reboot
* it has direct access to the real-mode address space (lowest 1 MB of physical address space), in fact it's mapped at virtual address 0 and everything. csrss.exe doesn't actually use this, it's a hack for calling the VGA BIOS from video drivers. the driver framework attaches to csrss.exe to get its address space (virtual address 0 is in the user mode range, and kernel processes like System have no user mode virtual memory range, so you need to attach to a user mode process for that) and then I have no idea what happens because I've never done VGA. there's a special flag to RtlCreateUserProcess (low level no-Win32 equivalent of CreateProcess, used to start winlogon.exe, csrss.exe, etc. you can tell a process has been launched by RtlCreateUserProcess instead of CreateProcess because its command line will include the full object namespace path, e.g. \??\C:\WINDOWS\System32\winlogon.exe), RTL_USER_PROCESS_PARAMETERS_RESERVE_1MB, whose entire purpose is to reserve the lowest 1 MB of virtual address space in the target process so that stacks, heaps, environment, etc. will be allocated somewhere else and win32k.sys can map the real-mode address space there (how do you allocate memory at address 0? just pass (PVOID)1 as the desired address to VirtualAlloc/NtAllocateVirtualMemo -
Horse ebooks versus I.e. versus e.g.
I think that someone who doesn't understand the difference between i.e. and e.g. has no business criticising others.
Good catch!
;-)I call bullshit on Pennycook's characterization of randomly generated nonsense as B.S, which he uses as a pivot of his 'study'. Here we have a generalization and judgement, an i.e. if you will, of something that can only be evaluated on an e.g. basis.
Identifying a scrap of apparent nonsense as profound is NOT a final judgement. It is a declaration that something is worthy to remember and consider, a state of unresolved investigation. We strive to find pattern and meaning and when we glimpse something --- a wordless sense on the level of intuition gives us a tug, saying in effect, file that one for later. Now whether we do in fact remember it and get around to pondering it later... depends on the amount of mental discipline and organization.
Sadly, we know how to write and are surrounded by paper but few of us actually write interesting things down anywhere and ponder on them. The hippies who followed Maharishi around in the 60s hanging on his every word mostly didn't keep journals, they had became addicted to the rush of hearing the words being spoken to them, and were sure that somehow somewhen something would click and it would all magically drop into place. Some pretended it did merely so they could leave and get on with their lives.
If you're clever enough and work at it you can eventually find a context where any nonsense makes sense. We see this as a challenge, a game.
In this paragraph imagine that I said something profound about our dreams are a journey along the dividing line between sense and nonsense, and how it is essential for us to do this 'perimeter walk' on a regular basis to shore up the specific neuron pathways along this 'border' and drop breadcrumbs that we use to know when we are crossing the line. Having these marked perimeters being essential to maintaining sanity, something like that. But yet, peoples' reactions to encountering these crumbs in the waking state varies: some may simply turn back, some may feel encouraged to cross over, some may even feel threatened.
Not all Goo Goo Goo Joob is either scripture or blather. That one's purpose was to deliberately confound those who were deeply analyzing Beatles lyrics for hidden meaning. Even Horse ebooks is not 'nonsense'. Though it was mechanically produced it is not the result of monkeys and typewriters. Its coder gathered volumes of text in which people were expressing ideas and sentiment, so the result makes new connections. Like round blue tailights on a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
What this has to do with gullibility I have not a clue.

Re:Not news
SJWs love roleplaying games, because they allow them to pretend they (the SJWs) matter. RPGNet is their private little sandbox, no adults allowed (I've seen someone be banned for refusing to post something that would get them banned. I do not exaggerate. The moderator said to in those very words in the post announcing the ban.) And they get to spew outrage at non-PC games, which is the real point for most of them - to be outraged, and frankly they don't care about what, read Eric Hoffer's The True Believer for a detailed explanation.
Not that they don't occasionally have a point. You can fairly well make a SJW's head explode with a copy of F.A.T.A.L., with a magic materials list that includes the phrase "cunt pipe," a list of professions that includes not a single one available for females that does not end with "will also engage in prostitution," and its (series of) table(s) for (I swear to God) how many finger you can stick in to a newborn baby's ass (by species) before you have to roll for damage,

My favorite things to laugh at were:
- The do-it-yourself NECKpro home traction device
- The laser scalp-stimulating helmet, to help reverse hair loss.
- The giant wooden airplane propellers
- The wall-sized crossword puzzle
Well, among everything else in there. It seems that SkyMall has moved on from these favorites. But, they were reliable point-and-laugh items when I was flying regularly a few years ago.

Ok, so when Riker was mackin' on the smokin' hot biddy in the red dress, lets say the two started knocking boots and he climaxed inside her. What happens to his seed when the program ends? Does the Holodeck recycle it for foodstuffs later, or does it just fall to the floor?
It does fall to the floor. The holodeck Janitor cleans it up: http://www.somethingawful.com/news/blue-stripe-life-4/

Re:Eve Online
Eve Online is the only MMO that has been able to keep me interested in playing for more than a few months at a time. It doesn't have any elves or dragons. It's not built around a film franchise or a beloved series of books. It is unique in that the content created by the game developers plays second fiddle to the content created by the players themselves. It has vibrant player corporations (guilds) based around third-party websites like Something Awful and Reddit (see also: Fweddit and Brave Newbies); which leads to in-game drama aka content creation. It offers high-stakes PvP, in that when you die; your ship explodes and the winning player loots your wreck (corpse) taking whatever valuables survived the explosions. It also allows you to scam your fellow players; which is fairly unique among games. It regularly makes mainstream news for it's large fleet fights and huge losses. And, you're allowed to use your money to buy in-game currency if you are so inclined. I should note that your characters do not level and you don't earn XP or experience points for killing stuff in-game. Instead, your characters earn points that apply to in-game skills in real-time whether you are logged in or not. Eve Online, because spaceships.

Re:Paypal freezing is old news
Paypal froze Notch's account after Mincraft went gold and began selling. Supposedly in just one day he managed to get over one hundred thousand dollars in sales which prompted paypal to freeze his account.
This is thanks to the US patriot act, bank secrecy act and possibly some other nanny state laws. Large transactions are red flagged and reported. The owner of the account must provide an explanation of what they are doing with the money. This is one of those risk mitigation plans we were talking about the other day which helps the US government find the "bad guys". Eventually paypal will unfreeze the account once they learn the money won't be used for terrorism, drugs, racketeering or other boogeyman bullshit. I feel safer already.
As if Paypal unfroze Notch's account out of the goodness of their hearts. No, the only way to get unfrozen is to have a huge crowd of fans making a big stink and generating lots of bad press. Does anyone remember Something Awful's Katrina fund? Paypal will try to steal your money, or at least sit on it for as long as they can to make interest on it. That this is a surprise to anyone is a surprise to me. (yes, that is what I meant to say there)

True, they could always use it to "rent" teenagers from one of the founders.

Re:I can sleep
So, you are so intelligent that cannot live with your own thoughs?
I dont think Im brilliant, but [I] have a decent job, and [a] great family, [begin run-on sentence] and I would never smoke pot because I have seen what it does to people[.] [S]ince I was a kid, I have know[n] all kind[s] of junkies[.] and most of them started with pot and if they keep just on pot they would still do a lot of stupid things, and guess what? The few ones did rehave changed their way of life for better, the rest I knew from infance plus the cleaned ones are all dead, and I am 38, a few of them should be around still.
With the infirm grasp of English that you display, despite (apparently) being a native of the language, I am left to wonder: Are you even smart enough to participate in this conversation?
If I hadn't given up on correcting your prose once I was reminded of this, I might have caught more errors.

Theodore Sturgeon's 90% of crud
Remember the days of the Atari consoles, the Nintendo NES, or even the early 16-bit era with SNES and Genesis? 80% of all the games were fun
How much of this is due to rose-colored glasses? If you played then, you thought the games you happened to receive as gifts were fun because you had little to compare them to. If you play now through emulators, you remember only the fun games, not Theodore Sturgeon's 90% of crud in the "full ROM set" that people tend to torrent. Among the crud are the games reviewed in Something Awful's ROM Pit.

Since you have to pay $10 to view the actual threads (no, seriously, it's an Internet forum you have to pay to use), I can't find the specific thread, but if you were dumb enough to pay $10 for a service that countless other sites offer for free, you can certainly find it. Re:Child pornography is not an excuse
Nah, CP is exceedingly common, as long as you redefine what CP to mean "anything that looks like a minor, regardless of context". It's amazing what difference a few days make, since there were a disturbing number of Slashdotters in that last thread all for censoring images of fully clothed possibly-minors. Thankfully the majority were against the move.

Swap.avi
Some people have such specific fetishes that they pay to have a film produced. Take the story of Scat Swapping School Swallow , for example. In 2004, a movie about pooping back and forth was proposed on Something Awful to someone with connections to a Brazilian porn studio specializing in requests. By June, the film was complete, and it was being distributed under the name "swap.avi". A year later, other films were referencing it.
