This reminds me of technology that has been under study for over a decade (and about a century for Sabatier) for generating chemical feedstocks on Earth and fuel on Mars. Granted, that just moves the carbon around, but this proposal even mentions carbon dioxide sequestration.

This new process (or method) may cut out one step of the process, making the process simpler and easier for Mars and Earth alike!

Check out this freeware windows program called Mailto Encrypter. It doesn't actually use encryption. Basically is uses hex codes to represent the mailto link so spambots cannot read it as plaintext.

I have had very good success using this tool. Addresses that get put up on the company web page in the encoded format NEVER get spam unless the owner actively does something stupid.

My true real actual e-mail address can be found on a limited number of places on the internet and it is encoded like this in every instance. I don't remember the last time I have gotten a spam message outside one of my spam accounts thanks to this tool.

There is a difference between a capsule and a rocket. An expendable rocket is only a delivery system. A capsule is what an astronaut rides in on an expendable rocket. Skylab and Mir were launched on rockets, and they were a lot more useful than the ISS. Commerical satellites are launched on rockets. Saturn V reportedly had a payload of 120 tons, which is about 6 shuttle launches. Of course, if you want to launch a single object weighing 30 tons or 80 tons, the shuttle is absolutely useless.

One problem with shuttle is that it costs a lot more to operate than a rocket per ton of mass into orbit. The design was a poor compromise, with conflicting goals. Reusable launch vehicles appear to have some advantages over rockets, unfortunately, the shuttle shares few of these advantages. There are lots of people who appear more knowledgable than I do on this topic, such as, oh, say, Jerry Pournelle. Do a google search for others.

Huh? All reports indicate that they are a few months to a couple of years away from producing nukes.

Sigh. I think it's a good war. But that's based on knowing a hell of a lot more stuff than I can put into a posting.

But just because I'll fail is no excuse not to try:

1. Saddam IS so oppressive that we should go in and liberate the country. I know we're all too damn cynical these days to use words like "liberate" but that's the damn reality. Our grandparents weren't too sophisticated to believe that you can liberate a country, but were too damn "smart".

2. The middle east is a fucking hell hole. Saudi Arabia has 1/4 of all of the world's oil and for them it's fucking free, on tap. But the Saudi princes claim to be descendants of Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab the founder of an Islamist cult that teaches it is the duty of his followers to invade the entire earth, subjugate all infidels and convert by the sword. Guess what the Saudis spend their oil money on? Spreading the good word. That's why oil matters. The Saudis are our enemies, but whenever they raise the price of oil a little our economy completely tanks. We need enough independent sources of oil that we are no longer reliant on our enemies and can put them in their place.

3. In other ways I'll say it again, "the middle east is a fucking hell hole." It's very hard to describe what you'll read if you read Arab newspapers.

It's a constant stream of what, to western eyes, looks like nonsensical hatred and lies about the west, about Americans and about Isralies. Their sense of history is SO screwed, and they really don't consider non-mulsims to be human beings worthy of survival. I hate to bring up the big old German Fuerer again, but he is a hero over there - every now and then you can find an article moaning that it's too bad he didn't get to finish the holocaust.

Anyway the problem is this. Remember Soviet newpapers? They printed nothing but propaganda too, but there's a difference. No one believed Soviet propaganda, not even the folks back in Russia. They were too well educated and Soviet propaganda was dry, it didn't stir up passion.

Arab's are different. They are very poorly educated when they are educated at all (50% illiteracy) and their propaganda is pure passion. The mob wants blood and lots of it.

Despite all the oil, the regular people in the Arab world are very poor, mostly because they're governments are archaic and becase they've rejected everything the rest of the world has learned over the past couple of hundred years - it's absolutely beneath their dignity to learn anything from us non-muslim trash.

But their newspapers have a ready excuse for every failure. It's a conspiracy. They believe that the Jews (and to a lesser but significant extent, the Americans and other westerners) have stolen them blind. It can be funny. When a poorly constructed radio tower in Afganistan blows over in the wind, the authorities say Massad (Israeli intelligence) must have destroyed it. When the date crop in Saudi Arabia doesn't bring good money on the world market, it must be because the Israelis (who's crop is 1/100th the size) must have spitefully undercut their price.

The place is drowning in ignorance, foolishness, oppression, misery and unimaginable violence.

Oh the violence... I'll get to that in a second, but I want to finish my point.

* The people there are living in a closed society. It's not changing from within. They're stuck.

* They're under terrible oppression.

* Because of Militant Islam, the Suadis, Al Qa'eda etc. they're a danger to us. We need to mess with their society so that, in the eyes of 100 million Militant Mulsims and 400 million Militant Muslim sympathizers around the world, modernity, with 3 squares a day, freedom, tolerance, prosparity and peace look better than destroying all infidels for Allah. I know it sounds crazy, but they don't all believe that right now.

We need to shoehorn a good example into the middle east as soon as possible.

I don't know as much about Korea. On thing I keep hearing is that we can't fight on two fronts at once, so Korea gets a temporary pass.

You can also look up Arab newspapers with english translations on Google Web Directory under newspapers. There's one fake Saudi newspaper to look out for. The editor lives and writes in California if that tells you anything.

If you liked this kind of game, you will love Adventure Game Studio. AGS is a very complete toolkit for interactive adventures. If you want to play a well-written, though short, game in AGS, try Permanent Daylight, referenced at the link above. There are a lot of games written in AGS already. The problem is not many of them are good. This is not a limiation of AGS, it's a limitation of the people who use it. Some of the games are quite impressive, and the graphics capabilities are more up-to-date than the graphics in the heydays of adventure gaming. Also, LucasArts seems to be the only company that has not forgotten the adventure game. They're even planning a release of Full Throttle II. And don't forget that the voodoo priestess has an unbreakable 5-game contract! Now if only they would release a Maniac Mansion III.

It is not clear at this point whether the rumored new Space Quest release will be a completely new game or a remake. Sierra has a long history of doing remakes, so I would not be quick to rule out the latter possibility.

Those who might be interested in remakes of classic Sierra adventures should definitely check out Tierra Entertainment. Tierra is basically a bunch of old Sierra game fanatics who are trying to revive the adventure game genre by remaking classic Sierra titles, as well as creating new ones.

They have several other games currently under development, including:

• a Quest for Glory II remake
• a King's Quest II remake

I discovered them a few months ago, and was very impressed by what they had accomplished. I would highly recommend that any classic Sierra adventure game fans give them the support and encouragement they deserve.

They are using a game engine called Adventure Game Studio, which has been used by others to create other Sierra-like adventure games as well.

I'm fairly sure you'd be able to do teh job with Proxomitron if you are using windows. The program is a proxy that applies a series of rules to pages you download and modifies them accordingly, ie, if a page has a blink tag on it, it will replace the blink tag into a bold tag. It has the ability to apply certain rules only to certain sites, and allows you to create your own rulesets. Only thing I didn't like about the program was its rather loud interface (look at the screenshots on the linked page, you'll see what I mean) but otherwise it's a pretty good prog.

As an FLA fan, I can't resist two obvious one-liners here:

2) "But apart from that one track, did any of FLA's lyrics ever make sense?"

Lack of I/O facilities means you couldn't create a postscript file that could replicate, but you could still potentially cause a bit of havoc. For example, create a postscript file that uses the random number generator to either print an amusing poster (99.9% of the time) or print several pages of dirty pictures (0.1% of the time). People will print the amusing document, send the file to all their friends, and eventually someone will get into trouble.

The other reason why no one has dropped 8.3 is that everyone is doing LFN differently. OS/2 can not read Windows LFN, Windows can not read OS/2 LFNs. No need to bring Apple into it.

Mac OS 8.x supports Windows 9x's VFAT long filenames on FAT filesystems.

The other irritating feature is that LFN is supported when the GUI is loaded. You can not fix a LFN from a Win9x boot disk.

Typical Microsoft practice of tying various things to their OS (in this case the GUI). You can add LFN support to DOS with LFNDOS. Works for LFN-compatible DOS programs such as command.com 9x, edit.com 9x, and all DJGPP programs.

As your using IE 5 I strongly suggest you download the Proximatron. You can set a rule to re-enable your right mouse click. Among other great things like resizing frames and tables and blocking popups and ads.

The author of this article is a complete idiot. Myst had okay graphics but was *yawn* boring as hell. The problem is "some people" decided that now that 3D games are easier to make, that's what people want. What's wrong with 2D graphics? I don't find Sam & Max Hit the Road any less funny or fun because "It ain't 3D!" I bought a SNES a couple of months ago so I could play Super Metroid (I hated playing it on my emulator. My gamepad just doesn't feel the same.) which is an awesome game that is also 2D. I think people equate 3D with cutting-edge coolness or something just as stupid. Good games require solid gameplay and decent controls/interface. I hate Megaman because I feel the lack of control keeps killing me. Abuse (now legal abandonware) is a great side-scroller (2D of course) but has an awesome control scheme. I don't play these things because they use the "latest most powerful 3D engine" but because they're FUN.

But beyond amusement, this wouldn't serve much purpose IF you could pull it off. On a large enough scale, it might amount to a form of protest, but why? Okay...Doubleclick has become the poster child of the profiling evil empire. And now Coremetrics has received the brunt of the privacy policy ignorance of its clients, putting the spotlight on third party data-mining. In either case, cookies represent an essential tool to get their jobs done. If you don't like it...your options are simple:

• Configure your browser.
• Use a local proxy or filter. Adsubtract is a good one. I like Proxomitron.
• Use a browser "companion". IDcide works well. It's free.
• Use a proxy service that manages cookies like Privada or Freedom (yep, sneaking my affiliate ID in that URL). Zapada is a clever Java applet approach to keeping Doubleclick et.al. out.
• Periodically clean out your cookie files, either manually or using any number of file tools like Webroot's WindowWasher.
• Just install Doubleclick's opt-out cookie. I've assembled the URLs in one convenient location at http://webveil.com/optout.html.
• Or physically edit your cookie file/directory to be read only...after installing the cookies you want in order to get personalized service...like here at Slashdot.

Apparently it is available. Otherwise, any Lunar Lander clone will come close.

An easier way to do this is to intercept the cookie headers and rewrite them before the browser even sees them. This is what Proxomitron does (among other really nifty filtering type things). I'm sure other proxy based filters can do the same thing, but Proxomitron is the only one that's ShonenWare! (He even names the releases after Naoko Yamano.)

But as most people note, pop up windows are one of the more annoying "features" of the Web. You can disable scripting languages, but then you lose a bunch of functionality that depends on javascript. I've found filtering programs like Proxomitron's very helpful since you can block some scripts (and some HTML and HTTP elements) by function.
