Thought this had been done already?

I went with planet CCRMA instead
Mostly because it was ready a couple of weeks ago when I was looking at Dave Phillips' page. This is where to find it. It runs on Red Hat 8 and everything seems to install well - I'm still casually working out some things here and there but Snd, Rosegarden and a few other things are working - haven't had a chance to try everything. One thing I've noticed is that other software packages I've downloaded elsewhere don't always get along with the libraries, probably because they were written with older distributions in mind.
One of the advantages is a special low latency kernel with ALSA built in. I've installed this and it's working.
I'll probably download the Turn-Key Linux Audio disc and see what I can get to work on my current installation - I downloaded and installed Red Hat 8 so I could check out Planet CCRMA, and don't really feel like switching to Mandrake. -

Re:Spare Cycles @ Work
I don't understand why companies don't include such things on new PCs as an option. Just include the
It's a good idea, but which ones do you choose? SETI? Folding@Home? Mersenne? There are tons of distributed computing projects - who do you include, and who do you leave out? I would imagine that AOL, Earthlink, and others have paid a set amount to put their icons on the desktop of new PCs. Giving away "desktop real-estate" on their new PC's might reduce the price they can command from other customers. .EXE file for Folding@Home (or one of the lesser projects :), a link on the desktop and an explanation of what the user can do with his/her idle CPU time. The number crunching power of millions upon millions of PCs wouldn't go to waste. :) -
It's the price
It never ceases to amaze me. The human capacity for hipocrisy and our inability to learn from history.
The same people who scream about keeping big government out of our business scream that we need new laws and regulations to protect our business. But that is mere political hipocrisy and we all suffer from that (I've caught myself holding the odd inconsistent belief).
No, in this case we're talking about price. Sure, there are a handful of people who are totally opposed to any form intellectual property. I think that is a small minority, however.
Basically the 'net has moved the cost of media distribution to nearly zero and the time delay nearly to zero. People want to get music they want and they want it now. CDs cost so much that people are willing to steal the music because the convenience is worth the very small risk that they will be caught and prosecuted. But people would rather be honest, or at least legal, if they could. I think most people would be willing to pay a small subscription or a small fee to download music, so long as they had their traditional "fair use" rights once they have it. To support this argument, I would point at the VCR. The industry fought it tooth and nail. They lost. My old man was an "early adopter." We had a VHS VCR the size of a small electric piano with big clunking mechanical keys and only SP and LP speeds. We used to trade movies taped off of HBO with friends because you couldn't yet buy or rent movies. When you could first buy movies, they were priced too high. By the early 1980's, however, the price had dropped to a reasonable level and I never traded another video. I bought 'em all. Hollywood began to make money on movies both at the initial release and again on video. They forget that they didn't used to get that double payoff. But the VCR was going to DESTROY THE WORLD!
Sure, there is video piracy. But most of us, I think, became legal consumers when the price got reasonable.
They claim digital technology by allowing perfect copies will DESTROY THE WORLD, but all it really means is that people will be slightly more willing to copy things if the price is too high. And it is. I guarantee you that the marginal cost of a DVD is a tiny fraction of the marginal cost of VHS videocassette, and yet DVDs cost more and VHS tapes are selling at half the price they used to. What does that tell you about the profitability of DVDs? It is huge.
The efforts to suppress copying and peer-to-peer and even PVRs is the effort to maintain a price structure that technology has undermined. They want to replace economics with regulation. Protectionism, but not nation to nation: instead producer to consumer.
They don't want to let the market set the price.
How anti-capitalist can you get?
The "theft" of their product would drop to a trivial level if they let market forces set the price. Instead, they build elaborate Rube Goldberg technologies (like the supressed synch copy protection on many DVDs and videotapes -- what's the brand name of that again? -- and CSS, which isn't even copy protection. It is a way to artificially create and maintain separate price markets and to prevent free trade between those markets) to keep the price where they think it needs to be.
The music industry is hurting badly. They say it is the fault of those people copying songs. It is not. It is the fault of the companies that have failed to realize that the market has changed fundamentally. Instead of adapting, they are attempting to get government to put the genie back in the bottle. Not even this liberal Democrat can love this extension of government (and you thought we loved every intrusive government program!) authority.
Consumers need to take action. Consider supporting the Electronic Frontier Foundation with your tax deductible contribution. No, I don't work for them, but I sent them what I could.
We need advocates for consumer rights in digital media. Without it, the common culture will become real estate, and culture will be nothing but a commodity. If I may also suggest, take a look at Stanford Law Professor Lawrence Lessig's Web Site and read his books, Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace and The Future of Ideas, The Fate of the Commons in a Connected World.
There is a cultural, political, and economic battle going on in our republic, and the media side has vast resources. The consumer side could use some. That means you. -

According to this AT&T was using its monopolies in local to gain an unfair advantage in long distance, or vice versa.
Mean while, you deal with legal monopolies every day. Your local phone company, gas company, and electric company are all monopolies. Those of you in the US, EDS (who administer the GRE, SAT, etc) is a monopoly -
Re:Why doesn't RMS bother with other professions?
I have read it and RMS's personal site as well. It is what led me to my opinions about him. If you think I'm wrong then go over it point by point. I not unwilling to be convinced of my so called errors.
With regards to payment, you are very wrong. This is a mantra of almost biblical proportions by now, but I shall risk repeating it: Free as in speech, not in beer.
Then why does he (RMS) care what I call Linux and why does he insist that all works that derive from the original be GPL'd as well?
He doesn't. There are many, many works that are GPL'd but are not considered to be part of the GNU project.
The question of why he refers to "Linux" as GNU/Linux or GNU+Linux, is answered in Stallman's various speeches (and I presume, in this book). I shall endeavour to clarify.
Prior to the formation of the GNU project, the world of free software, as Stallman knew it, was declining. Stallman alone decided to rectify this. He began by writing the software which would allow a "free" version of UNIX to exist. This software consisted, amongst others: a text editor (GNU emacs), a compiler (GCC), binary tools (binutils), and so forth.
Naturally, an entire Operating System written by one man would take a great deal of time. So the GNU project, embraced that software which would help complete the free version of UNIX that the GNU project envisioned. Notably TeX and X11 -- both massive projects that didn't need to be re-implemented because of the licences which both where distrubuted under. ie. they were "compatible" with the GNU philosophy. (I mention this because it highlights that the GNU project doesn't lay claim to "ownership" of these very important parts of the free operating system Stallman initiated).
By 1991, a complete UNIX system existed except for the kernel. Enter, Linus Torvalds: Linus' implementation of a UNIX kernel fitted precisely the kernel shaped hole in the GNU project. Initially, the GNU project didn't notice the Linux kernel, but other people did, and saw that it was good. However, a kernel on it's own is useless. For a working operating system, various tools need to exist. So, when people started looking around for tools and other software that they could use with this new kenel, they found the GNU project. This is not a coincidence.
Whether or not you believe the Operating System is "Linux" with a few GNU tools added on, or the GNU Operating System completed with the Linux kernel is a matter of perspective. Personally, I believe it is the latter. Stallman's suggestion that you refer to the various operating systems that utilise Linux as GNU/Linux is simply a request that you recognise my perspective -- the work of the GNU projet.
I like the following analogy: The forest is populated by many trees. One of those trees represents the compiler, another represents the tools that manipulate binary files, or text files. Yet another tree represents the kernel. The entire forest however, is the GNU project. It is acknowledges that if this forest didn't exist there would be a few unconnected copses or individual trees representing non-proprietary software but the forest as a whole wouldn't exist if Stallman hadn't planted it.
The request that you refer to the Operating System as GNU/Linux is a suggestion that you see the forest and not that single tree that represents the kernel. In other words, the people who reject this request, metaphorically, can't see the forest because of the trees.
If "ideas" are truly free and I wish to take an idea modify it and profit from it how is the original owner HARMED?
He's not, and the GNU project never claims otherwise. However, to take that idea, to modify it and then to deny other people to view those moderations (as the BSD licence allows) can "harm" original author as he is one of those people to which access has been denied. Other people have benefited from his work, so why shouldn't he (or more pertinently, society) benefit from the work of others? Especially when their work has utilised his? The GPL addresses this.
If I choose to be sellfish and keep all the benefits to myself, how does that stop you from taking the original free material and using IT anyway YOU want to?
It doesn't. But don't you consider the re-implementation of something that someone else has already achieved as wasted effort? Again, the GPL addresses this.
It isn't the fact that he gives away the product that is a problem. It is the fact that he wants to CONTROL the use of the product.
I don't see this as a fact. Please point out instances where Stallman wants to control products that he isn't the copyright holder of.
I assume USE is a typo and you meant U.S.A.
Of course it is; and looking at my keyboard, it astonishes me that I that I managed it. :-)
The founding fathers put IP protection in the consitution. You statement is unsported by the exsistance of that document. Please clarify your point because I don't follow or agree with you.
The constitution of the USA doesn't include IP protection -- IP is a nonsensical term. It does however, include the concept of copyright.
Copyright was intended to provide the creators of copyrightable works with an incentive to create. It was never meant to be a mechanism that granted ownership. The "for a limited time" statement supports this. In other words, copyright is a meant to be a means to an end, not an end in itself.
I'm really not the man though, to discuss this in any great depth. I implore you to read the writings of Lawrence Lessig if you wish to explore this subject further. -
Re:Why is software not as good as bridges?
How much better would Windows be if we shot a programmer for every BSOD?
Actually Windows itself is pretty stable. The Windows core has been around the block, has had billions of installations, and doesn't crash. The BSOD is usually a kernel check or a STOP -- a condition where Windows says that something really bad was prevented. Just like a kernel panic, it's actually a good thing, compared to the alternative. Most of the BSOD's in Windows come from shoddy software. The BSOD or kernel panic allows developers to find the device drivers, libraries, or other 'insider' code that is messed up.
I've done a *LOT* of debugging, including wading through the kernel and drivers to find strange bugs (these comments are about graphics drivers specifically). I have seen device drivers with int 3's (debug interrupts) scattered through them. I have seen device drivers that obviously were using the 'minimal rebuild' options, resulting in slower and more-corrupt code. I have seen drivers that try to run (and usually crash) Pentium 3, Pentium 4, and Athalon instructions even though the CPU doesn't support those instructions. In short, drivers and applications, not the Windows kernel or API's, are generally at fault.
When I do have the misfortune of having to do driver-level debugging, I have never, not once, seen a crash with the Windows NT/98/2000/ME/XP kernels. Inefficient, unoptimized and seemingly poor design decisions are in there, as are occasional functional errors and side effects, but as for crashes in the kernel, I have never seen one.
If the same logic were applied to all software (If it crashes, you die) not even Donald Knuth would be left alive. And that would be a sorry state.

Re:Drive reliability/backups are major factors
Build another [preferably bigger] array off-site and use rdiff-backup or something similar to mirror it and its changes over time. You can also get a removable bay and use single IDE drives for incrementals if your change sets are small enough to permit that.

A good introduction, but...It's a good introduction to how a computer works.
But if you need it, you shouldn't be reading Slashdot, or at least, not posting stories.
The classic on this subject, is, of course, Von Neumann's First draft report on the EDVAC.

Re:Stanford does
Stanford definately recognizes video games. There are many courses on AI and graphics, with the projects in introductory courses focused on the simpler models present in video games.
Outside the School of Engineering (where Computer Science lives), video games haven't gone unnoticed. The Stanford Humanities Lab has a video game project called "How They Got Game" led by two respected researchers. A very popular undergraduate course linked to this research project is Science, Technology, & Society 145: History of Computer Game Design.
.. one of the many perks to attending a university located in the Silicon Valley. -

Stanford does
Please see CS248 . The final project of the class is to make a video game. I went to the showing last year, and the games kicked ass. There were people from the game industry that came to judge the final product, they recruited people pretty heavily if I recall correctly.

Similar situation at SLAC
I work at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
Back in the day(TM) before RDBMS were a commodity, SLAC used the SPIRES database written at Stanford running on an IBM Mainframe. Well, as these things go, the IBM Mainframe was getting long in the tooth, but there was a ton of data in this SPIRES database. SPIRES wasn't going to get ported to anything modern. I forget who exactly, but one engineer just up and decided to write an emulator for the IBM mainframe in practicly no time at all.
Now the SPIRES database is still running. However, it now runs on Solaris using a home-brewed IBM Mainframe emulator. Even though it's in emulation, it runs faster than it ever used to on the real deal (Moore's Law and all).
As a side note, the first truly useful web site was here at SLAC when George Crane and Paul Kunz hooked up a web front end to the SPIRES database so the High Energy Physics community could easily get at other's papers. -
Zero knowledge
I implemented a single-sign on solution quite easily for my own side project (see suprasphere). It uses a zero-knowledge proof called the "Secure Remote Password Protocol" done by Thomas Wu of stanford. My solution is full Java, but there are other implementations, some of which I think even work for SSH.
The way it works is that the password is never sent to the remote host, ever. Instead, it only proves that you know the password beyond a statistical reasonable doubt. The advantage to this, is that I can use the same password "verifier" many places without having to trust them.
Just for the heck of it, I decided to provide a way to use a 1024 bit random integer as the basis for a roaming profile. You can use a human memorizable passphrase to login one place (such as your PC), and then pick up the large random number that will be used to prove yourself to all of the sites where you have an account. Assuming you use the 1024 bit number for verification, there's virtually no chance that someone will be able to forge your identity.
This is no different than using a private key in conjunction with a public key, but it's nice because it also works with human passwords, with a nice migration path to using more secure authentication means. Furthermore, since you in theory don't know if a verifier was created using a human password or a big integer, it makes it highly improbable to try to brute force guess using either an offline or online dictionary attack.
Also, I just came across this IBE solution, also from Stanford that works for regular email, which suprasphere doesn't support yet. (see Stanford IBE Crypto) My email is david@suprasphere.com if you want to contact me. -

Rational ProgrammingI've previously discussed the future import of rational programming based on revival of Bertrand Russell's relation arithmetic. For a taste of simple one-place relations and how they are useful for obtaining fast results without "fuzzy logic" or "expert systems" -- and how relations can work without SQL -- you might try the correlator calculator. It shows how rational programming is a direct result of applying simple relations to problems with arithmetic operators. I'll be expanding it to do 'units' matching based on column identities and keeping track of dimensions and their sizes (positive and negative column counts).
There are lies, damn lies, statistics and the over application of Mark Twain's complaint.
Unfortunately, since things have been so bleak professionally lately due to all the 'help' received by US programmers it may be left for someone else somewhere else to complete this work.

What is an Ontology? Explained here.
See this web page for what these buzzword-merchants actually mean.
Short answer:
An ontology is a specification of a conceptualization.
The word "ontology" seems to generate a lot of controversy in discussions about AI. It has a long history in philosophy, in which it refers to the subject of existence. It is also often confused with epistemology, which is about knowledge and knowing.
In the context of knowledge sharing, I use the term ontology to mean a specification of a conceptualization. That is, an ontology is a description (like a formal specification of a program) of the concepts and relationships that can exist for an agent or a community of agents. This definition is consistent with the usage of ontology as set-of-concept-definitions, but more general. And it is certainly a different sense of the word than its use in philosophy.
What is important is what an ontology is for. My colleagues and I have been designing ontologies for the purpose of enabling knowledge sharing and reuse. In that context, an ontology is a specification used for making ontological commitments. The formal definition of ontological commitment is given below. For pragmetic reasons, we choose to write an ontology as a set of definitions of formal vocabulary. Although this isn't the only way to specify a conceptualization, it has some nice properties for knowledge sharing among AI software (e.g., semantics independent of reader and context). Practically, an ontological commitment is an agreement to use a vocabulary (i.e., ask queries and make assertions) in a way that is consistent (but not complete) with respect to the theory specified by an ontology. We build agents that commit to ontologies. We design ontologies so we can share knowledge with and among these agents.
You too can do in XML+Java, and at great investment of time, what is already possible with Lisp. But hey, it looks like you're doing work and you might get some venture capital. Or not, in the current market...

Re:Exploding Dog?You might be interested to read Lessig's take on this. Basically I guess if Lessig posted it, he's okay with this statement:

So yes, exploding dog does count. -

"You're an engineer, you don't have any friends."In the words of Jeff Hawkins, founder of Palm, "You're an engineer, you don't have any friends." One day at Palm, Jeff was talking to one of the engineers and the engineer was complaining "this is a stupid product, who would use it?" Jeff immediately replied "You're an engineer, you don't have any friends."
If you don't believe me, you can see for yourself in this video of a Jeff Hawkins' lecture.
If you don't use a PDA, ask yourself how many meetings do you go to in a week? How many phone calls do you make in a week? How many different people do you call in a week? When I was in product marketing at Cisco, I would often have 20 meetings in a week, and 25 voice messages to return at the end of a day.
PDAs are great for executives, marketing, and sales people. They are constantly interacting with other people. Engineers may spend more time in their cube cranking out the next great piece of software. The more meetings they have, the less productive they would be.

I like this paper...
I like this paper, which is a rundown on watermarking, DRM, and the "darknet" (basically, illegal content traffic).
My favorite part is this bit at the end:
"Additionally, the cost-per-bit, and the total size of the objects have a huge bearing on the competitiveness of today's darknets compared with legal trade. For example, today's peer-to-peer technologies provide excellent service quality for audio files, but users must be very determined or price-sensitive to download movies from a darknet, when the legal competition is a rental for a few dollars."
If you read between the lines, what they're basically saying is that MP3s are being pirated because CDs cost too much. Perhaps this is common sense, but it's nice to hear people from companies like Microsoft saying it.

Top 20 spammers in the country.Wired recently did a great article on the economics of spam and the business behind it. Spam is big business, and many oportunists have sprung up to take advantage of it. The magazine did a lot of research on just who is sending all this spam, and it turned out that a small number of very large "direct marketing service" companies were involved in a majority of it. They went on to compile a list called "the top 20 spammers in America." These 20 individuals are heads of companies that are responsible for a total of 67% of all direct-marketing e-mail generated in the United States.
I've typed up the list for your convenience.

a starting pointDon't count on anyone to do this for you and don't count on support from MPV. Even if you could get the companies on the OSTA's members list to agree on anything more than screwing their customers, you know they will continue to thwart each other in the future as they have in the past. Just look at all the different propriatory film formats and processes. Every few years one company or another makes a completely new thingy, such as 110 mm or advantix, which reduces negative size and adds cost. All of the photo album software I've ever seen has been awful propriatory junk. MPV is a step in the right direction but it does not get you there, as you have noticed because you are working independently. This is a DIY if ever there was one because royalty free and open is not free and therefore you WILL be at the mercy of the media companies if you follow. Morover, MPV itself does not specify storage formats and therfore is subject to DRM abuse.
Here's a practical start. Check out igal, which generates and publishs an entire online picture show (HTML slides, thumbnails and index page included) with just one command line invocation. HTML is open and easy to parse, not to mention edit by hand to add those custom touches. You can build your classes of relationships external to the archive itself to merge things as you wish or simply make new indexes to the images.
I'm crurrently building html indexes of my files. It's easy enough to put friends and family into seperate directories then family names in seperate directories under family then link events by hand elsewhere. Such segmentation helps at archive time and adding to it is as easy as dropping a new directory. Good organization makes itself felt in any media, paper or digital.

Original papers on lisp and information theory
The original paper on Lisp by John McCarthy could be considered an important part of CS history: Recursive Functions of Symbolic Expressions and Their Computation by Machine (Part I)
Claude Shannon's A Mathematical Theory of Communication is good to know as well.
Richard Gabriels' Worse Is Better paper is also on the web, but I don't know if that qualifies. It's somewhat new to be folklore.I don't know if any of the original papers by Turing, Church and von Neumann have been put online so post some links if you find them.

Re:Why physical backup-tapes?
Thats why you use rdiff-backup, which lets you pull up "yesterday's rsync". It is actually a quite nice system that does reverse diffs on the data, over a SSH connection by default.

No credit to the designers of this technology? The technology is really cool, yes, but let's not forget the PEOPLE behind it all. These men and woman worked for years to bring this technology to the medical community. Indirectly, they may have saved thousands of lives. Let's give them some credit. Here are the researchers and developers who created this new robotic technology.

The people working to get Linux into the classroomA few hard-working and little-known volunteers have been at work for years now to make Linux and Open Source a mainstream presence in the American classroom. They've brought Linux into hundreds of schools, but received little recognition for their efforts. If you want to see more Open Source reaching our nation's children, let these people know that they're appreciated.

Re:Yup, pretty much..
This paper in particular caught my eye. A generic technique for removing any watermarking scheme?
Surely if they locked up Dmitri Sklyarov for talking about Adobe's abysmal protection mechanisms, how long can it be before we see the same for Darko Kirovski? (Gee, he sounds kinda russian too, guys - let's get him!)
Luckily Fabien Petitcolas, his co-author, lives in England and therefore is out of reach of the RIAA, unless of course he is called over to Redmond on business some day...

"Darknet" paper
I had a look at the "Darknet" paper written by Peter Biddle, Paul England, Marcus Peinado, and Bryan Willman all of Microsoft Corporation.
It's really strange. Some aspects of it seem to pander very crudely to the MSFT bias towards single-user computers - the authors miss out on usenet as a "darknet" completely and they date "Internet" darknet activities to 1998. I can recall FTP'ing scanned playboy centerfolds from wustl.edu as early as 1989 - it was almost a year to the day after the Morris internet worm struck. At the same time the conclusions are very anti-MSFT-corporate-worldview: the authors conclude that some form of "darknet" will always exist for various reasons. This collides directly with MSFT's TCPA and Palladium and general piracy-crackdown viewpoint.
I can only conclude that some faction inside MSFT doesn't like or believe in the MSFT-corporate direction to include copy protection (a.k.a. DRM) in the OS and this paper is a sort of sermon in the void to warn the CEO/COO/C?? against putting all the MSFT eggs in one basket.
Or perhaps the authors are trying to run the plot of their latest cyber-thriller up the flagpole to see who salutes it.
