As for scientific research, I don't think knowledge is destructive. I agree that the fruits of scientific research can be very destructive (atomic weapons, bio weapons, drugs, etc.) That's why there are things like the nuclear non-proliferation treaties, and the FDA. If you think that knowledge itself is dangerous, then I guess we have a major difference of opinion

Merely testing how far you think a restriction ought to go. There are some who WOULD consider the mere posession of certain types of knowledge too dangerous for "regular people" to have.

Cars are useful though, so I don't think they should be banned. It's not like the only purpose of a car is to run someone down, that's just something that occasionally happens. For that reason, the benefits of cars outweigh the risks. That doesn't hold true for guns.

That's actually where I would disagree with you. If I understand correctly, to your mind, having guns = increased likelyhood of something going wrong. This presupposes that of the legal users of firearms, some of them will be involved in incidents where the negative consequences of having a firearm will outweigh any positive benefit, and that there really isn't any positive benefit for having a firearm, hence your argument that firearms be restricted. However, I believe that there are positive benefits for firearms training, firearms usage, and ownership (for those who choose to do so), AND I believe that even if some might misuse firearms, to restrict the rights of many in advance, for the actions of a few, is a form of control with troubling implications.

For example - I target shoot infrequently with rifle and pistol. This is a form of recreation, just the same as people shooting targets using bow and arrow (with many of the same range rules, I might add), and a sport that has a place in the Olympics, in the form of the biathlon, and distance shooting competitions. Firearms training is often taught by those with a love of sport shooting or hunting, much in the same way that hams with a love of technology and communications teach ham radio. These people shoot on a recreational basis - eliminating private ownership of firearms would deprive these individuals of an enjoyable hobby, and effectively restrict training to law enforcement and military only. This would seem to run contrary to efforts such as the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which seeks to promote youth development and civilian marksmanship skills.

I agree that if guns were completely illegal, serious criminals would still have them.

But wouldn't that include criminal organizations that tend to commit the "intra-criminal crime", that might result in innocent casualties that you alluded to earlier?

But if only criminals had guns, then merely possessing a gun would be enough to throw someone in jail. You wouldn't need to wait for them to misuse it.

But what about areas where guns are illegal right now, and yet there is gun violence (ie, Washington D.C.)? Or where guns are illegal for criminals to own in the first place (ie, convicted felons). By your argument, wouldn't the police have already descended in mass raids and arrested everyone for weapons posession?

From your argument, it sounds like you believe that guns are the only thing keeping things from descending into anarchy.

My main reasons for being "pro-gun", as it were, are:

1. Every law-abiding citizen has the right to self-defense, especially since the police have no legal responsibility to ensure or safeguard your personal safety. Click on Current Weather to see the MapServer-based map I helped create initially. It's all built with open-source software and (I think) freely available data from the national weather service. It's amazing how much data you get, and how easily it can be handled by one little machine in a windowless office somewhere (until it's slashdotted of course).

What I would love to see somebody come out with is a provider-side web configurable firewall.

While I am a student at utexas.edu, I must speak up about https://firewall.tamu.edu/. Apparently the resnet team in College Station filters the heck out of their residents' hosts, but allows them to open their boxes up interactively on the fly without having to call tech support. This is all based on what I have gleaned from the TAMU CIT online writeups, so of course dont quote me on it. While I do not have access, maybe some kind A&M soul will offer forth what is contained inside? :)

Hooray for BSD and Snort inline! Apparently TAMU also doing some really cool IDS work and dynamically switching ACOs to non-routable VLANs and providing fixes via a web interface for compromised hosts. I heard about RIT doing something similar with their homebrewed ActiveX-based development during last July/August during the big RPC craze. I wish more universitys would implement similar solutions.

Well, maybe they don't need to, but personally, I have a hard time thinking that even a ruminant can get enough nutrition from cellulose alone to get by.

Regardless, your point is irrelevant because we certainly do feed the "edible" part of the corn to cows and other animals, whether they "need" to eat it or not. I don't know if you've ever been to America's beautiful corn-growing heartland, but of all the corn they raise out there, a very small percentage is the "Sweet Corn" that humans eat. In fact, over 50% of the corn produced in the US does go to domestic animal feed, and that number may get closer to 70% when you include the corn we export to feed cows in Japan and elsewhere. Tomorrow at 4 PM, physicist Shahriar S. Afshar, a Visiting Scientist at Harvard University's Physics Department will give a talk entitled Violation of Bohr's principle of complementarity in an optical "which-way" experiment at Texas A&M University.

Afshar has done a variation of the standard two-pin-hole "welcher-Weg" optics experiment, in which he demonstrates that wave interference is present even when one is determining through which pinhole a photon passes. This result is in direct contradiction to Neils Bohr's Principle of Complementarity, which would require in the quantum world that when one is measuring quantum properties, all wave interference phenomena must vanish. Afshar's trick is to find the location of the minimum points of wave interference, place one or more wires at these minimum points, and observe how much light is intercepted when one is determining the pinhole through which the photons passed.

It has been widely accepted that the rival interpretations of quantum mechanics, e.g., the Copenhagen Interpretation, the Many-Worlds Interpretation, and my father John Cramer's Transactional Interpretation, cannot be distinguished or falsified by experiment, because the experimental predictions come from the formalism that all such interpretations describe. However, the Afshar Experiment demonstrates in an interaction-free way that there is a loophole in this logic: if the interpretation is inconsistent with the formalism, then it can be falsified. In particular, the Afshar Experiment falsifies the Copenhagen Interpretation, which requires the absence of interference in a particle-type measurement. It also falsifies the Many-Worlds Interpretation which tells us to expect no interference between "worlds" that are physically distinguishable, e.g., that correspond to the photon's passage through one pinhole or the other.

The Transactional Interpretation, on the other hand, has no problem in explaining that Afshar results. "Offer waves" from the source pass through both pinholes and interfere, creating a condition in which no transactions to the wires can form. Therefore, no photons are intercepted by wires, as Afshar observes. The quantum formalism makes the same predictions.

On this basis, it appears that two of the major interpretations of quantum mechanics have been falsified and should be relegated to the waste basket of physics history. The Transactional Interpretation, which involves a forward/back in time handshake, is one of the few (perhaps the only) interpretation(s) left standing after the Afshar test.
