Re:Take The Fanboy Goggle Off
You can believe me or not, I don't care. You don't back your claims, in reality it's PS3 games that run in "640p" compared to 720p on 360 (see here and here) or with missing post-processing. Games I worked on had features cut on PS3 compared to 360 as well, but I won't damage the franchise by stating what it was. It is enough for me that Sony realized their mistake and is trying hard to make up for it with PS4.

Re:Not true
My GPS system and display has a pretty decent CPU in it, too.
Oh, and a 3.2 Ghz Triple core CPU:
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12494/Suzuki-SXBox-Xbox-360-Concept-Car-Pictures/Please do not compare engine ECU processors to GPS interface processors. The GPS units do not have runtime requirements (just like in Windows). The ECUs have to make some calculations at very small reccurence. Missing such a timing can have dezastruous effects. Think about this: and engine at 8000rpm will complete one rotation in 7.5ms. So the better control you have over the injectors and spark plugs, the better fuel efficiency you can get from one burning cycle. While a diesel will probably not reach 8000rpm, just think about this: a fuel injection cycle has 3 stages, pre-injection, injection and post-injection. In the pre- and post-injection the fuel quantity is pretty small compared to the injection phase, but all this is done during half of rotation (maybe a little more, as I don't know about the advance). So at 5000rpm (at which some diesels cut fuel), you have 12ms for one rotation, that means 6ms for making 3 separate injections. And you also have to monitor many sensors to prevent some damages. If you would rely on windows (even CE), you would kill you engine pretty quickly.
And what they are talking about is currnet products (released engine). I can tell you that they are already working on a 133MHz processor which can also run at 180MHz (Infineon Tricore 1782). But projects based on these will probably not see the day in 2011.
Also, if you compare a core2duo, you should be aware that we are talking about less than 1W microcontrollers. Also processors which are rated for 15 year in 125 C ambiental conditions. Your C2D would have tripped the shutdown signal long before your engine was getting warm, as it's around 100C at junction level, not ambiental.

Kinnect wasn't MS
Kinnect wasn't a MS idea. MS saw that they needed to compete in the console space against their competitors' motion control solutions, and bought up a 3rd party and slapped an MS sticker on it. You can find quotes from many gaming sites that say they saw the same technology being demoed and fully usable at GDC prior to MS's purchase of 3DV so they could use their patented 3D depth sensing software with the PrimeSense motion sensor camera.
All this to say that MS didn't really develop it. They just saw they were behind the curve and needed a solution fast. -

Re:MS needs to be thinking about the 720
On a personal note, how about making your online architecture a little more friendly to MMO's? The PS3 has several in the pipeline, and you don't have any.
If they wait too long, Sony is going to start trouncing them with the stronger hardware of the PS3.
Sony has had over 3 years to "trounce" them. This hasn't happened yet. Why would the stronger hardware aspect of the PS3 all of the sudden start attracting gamers away from the 360?
-
Re:Another link in a long chain.
I can't find a clear answer as to what percentage of 360 owners have never connected to Live, but this suggests that it's around a third. I highly doubt they'd suddenly prevent one third of their userbase from playing games and dealing with those who buy the game anyway but can't play them just to stop piracy.
And I don't see anyway this would be even possible with DVDs. -
Re:does an iphone....
The Wii's more powerful than the most powerful gaming machines a few years ago and there were a lot of good games back then (unreal tournament 2004, Doom 3, etc).
This is total bullshit. The Wii is a 729mhz PPC processor with 88 megs of RAM. I don't know what backwater part of the world you lived in a few years ago, but that isn't even remotely more powerful than the most low-end gaming machines that were powerful enough to play Doom3/UT2004.

Re:You can troll with them = you can make statemen
The same thing is likely going to happen with games is my point. Games can definitely make statements, but to really see what the form is capable of, you're going to have to wait for videogame making to evolve.
We already have all the technology we need. Graphics quality has reached a very comfortable level. If you use an art style like Eternal Sonata's, then you're already on the level of animated films, which can be just as serious and "artistic" as live action ones (see Spirited Away for example). Motion capturing, voice acting and realistic facial expressions allow for very convincing cutscenes and such.
The technology is there and the medium is ready, but the developers are lagging behind. I'm not feeling very optimistic about their ability to pull off anything that intelligent and knowledgeable non-gamers would be comparing to established cinematic works of art. And on the other hand, do gamers really care? Is anyone going to buy an adventure game in this day and age? Or would they rather just play Halo and Madden?

Re:Well then...
Exactly. WiiFit is not a new or innovative idea. It is an idea that was executed better than any previous version. In fact, if I was the suspicious type, I could call WiiFit a total ripoff. The XBox had Yourself!Fitness. Only the most hard core of fanboys are going to be able to claim that WiiFit isn't the same kind of game as Yourself!Fitness. And the WiiFit controller is just a supped up version of the Amiga JoyBoard. It was well reported that the JoyBoard had a meditation game, which is not far off from Yoga, and the skiing game IS Mogul Maniac. Puzzle games are just not something new. I haven't tried we music, so I cannot comment on it, but it seems clear that there these cames are not innovative. They are just very well implemented.

Re:Where is the article?
I suppose they rely a bit too much on previous released information. It seems Voice commands figure heavily into their statement. Personally, I see the controls as being one of the biggest barriers to the RTS genre on consoles. While I find this is an interesting direction, even if it does solve a lot of control issues, they are still only one of many barriers. Then again, maybe I'm just to big of a PC fan to see a revolution...

Re:Say what?
Measured by investment vs return for their stockholders. Posting a profit for the first time is a big step and was forecasted to do exactly this 2 years ago. It is a business model that spans many years and was launched knowing full well they would see losses for years. Microsoft entered the console gaming market and is doing very well by the looks of things. The XBox is a household brand and the Halo series has a stranglehold on the top title spot. Do you think the stockholders see the Xbox as a failure? Nope, they are banking on its long term success as it is already built into the stock price, making the Xbox a success.

-Unreal
more recently:

-Okami
-Zelda Twilight Princess

Re:Hilarious Zonk FUD!
Not this bullshit again. The following is important and it needs to be said loud and clear:
The Xbox 360 uses a standard 12X DVD-ROM drive, which supports disks up to 9GB in size.
Anyone claiming otherwise needs to prove otherwise. I realize I've never bothered substantiating my claim either, but here we go - the technical specifications for the Xbox 360. Note that the DVD drive is a standard 12X dual-layer DVD-ROM drive.
Not to mention that Rockstar was repeatedly stated that the delays for GTA IV are caused by the insane difficulty in developing for the PS3. There are plenty of other comments in this story that link to that fact, so just check them out. -

Procedural animation
The catch, of course, is that all this animation comes at a pretty huge cost in time. It takes teams of animators countless hours to generate all that animation.
I keep thinking that procedural animation is going to be the next big thing. Instead of rigid animations, we'll see rules governing the position of each limb and how they interact with the world and other characters. It's expensive in terms of CPU processing power, but it allows for a far more natural interaction with the environment. There's a movie of the new Indiana Jones game that shows this off nicely.
My dream, as a hobbyist game developer, is to have animation and text to voice systems get to the point where I can do a lot of the work myself. As it is, coordinating voice actors and model animation takes a huge chunk of time. -
Re:Maybe... just maybe...
I think the real problem is that online games are almost exclusively about aggression. In almost all online games, the primary way you interact with the game world is a weapon. Even when you're in a party you're sometimes competing with your own party members. Until we have games that are founded on cooperation instead of competition, where your primary tools are something other than guns and swords, players of online games are going to be aggressive toward each other.
It's the nature of the games themselves, which is of course a side effect of the people who work in the game industry, but also a cause. It's a vicious cycle. However, there is hope on the horizon, and it comes from the (unlikely) direction of Valve software and Team Fortress 2. Have you seen the latest trailer for Team Fortress 2? The facial animation software is nothing short of incredible. This is a key tool that has been missing from games for years. If it can be merged with a procedural animation system, Valve will have finally brought down the barriers to creating movie-quality character development and plots in games.
Team Fortress won't have a movie-worthy in-game plot, to be sure, but the personality and above all *humor* infused into Valve's characters is already a welcome change from typical FPS fare. OTOH, something like Portal could be a breakthrough game. -

Dear Mr. Thompson,
From the desk of the millions of normal people who play games:
Much like you, we were deeply disturbed by the actions of the shooter at Virginia Tech and feel terribly for the families of the lost. However we deeply resent the fact that you have totally bypassed the issue at hand and chosen instead to scapegoat the electronic entertainment industry. Perhaps instead of blaming videogames (which are clearly not your area of expertise) we should instead delve a little deeper in order to find what causes these depraved/deprived individuals to take such drastic measures. Your "proof" of a link to video game violence is tenuous at best - equivalent to such joke statistics as bread creating murderers. Statistical correlation is not proof of cause and effect but beyond that, you have failed to even show a statistical correlation, instead bringing up the specific examples where the statistics say what you want to prove.
Like naysayers for the past several centuries, you see the advent of a new form of entertainment as the downfall of society. Novels, the waltz, radio and television have all been targetted in the past and so far civilization has emerged unscathed (but not unchanged).
Perhaps this is the issue; you (and millions of right-wing conservatives) are afraid of what the future may bring. Who knows what changes the liberalization of the West may bring?
In short, we feel that you are doing nobody any good - you are attempting (and luckily failing) to take the attention away from the actual issues (which in the case of the VT shooting are as of yet indetermined).
Signed,
Gamers of the world.
P.S. While we harbour you no malice, I wouldn't suggest you attempt any retribution - we have all been trained on "murder simulators" . . . -

Re:PS3
Caching to the HDD is a developer's work around to shitty read speeds on the optical drive. That's why Microsoft installed a higher speed DVD drive to eliminate the need to cache to the HDD.
Okay, you're obviously an Xbox fanboy. Many, many articles were written about Oblivion caching to the HD on the 360. There's no way they could use the textures they were using due to the low read speeds of the optical drive - a DVD is never as fast as a hard drive, which is why it's not necessary to do this on the PC - the game is already installed on the drive!
In case you really doubt what I say, let's see what Bethesda has to say about the problem:
Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360s that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more. -
Too bad :\, so sad-It's a fad.
"Tons of games where the first level is the coolest thing, followed by boring, repeating hallways or nonsense puzzles that just pad out the game"
Oh man, it would be so cool if someone would review games for us. -
Didn't really say anything...what youcouldsay a51This is a catch-22, kind of hypocritical coming from a dude who writes at an 8th grade level in terms of of factual basis and content length . I mean, you didn't really say anything: what is the purpose of your statement, considering it is false?
Outside of a-51, some people make moral mistakes while doing complicating professional level stuff along the way and don't even notice them. Take for instance them building that 5 million $ seed shack up in svalbardslush: it's really complicating to make, but there are people dying right now from curable illnesses, and it won't even guarentee saving a single person in the future because there's never going to be doomsday on earth in the foreseeable future if world leaders don't goof off and nuke the entire world, there's never been a comet that has hit the earth to cause annihilation that I have witnessed and I don't understand that there ever will be.
From my reading of Ayn Rand's books (objectivist epistemology, anthem, the fountainhead) I know that she rights about moral problems, which address many issues that are missed by the people I mentioned in the first sentence of the second paragraph, and ideals. A lot of parts of Ayn Rand's books I burn and request editing from the editors, such as the garbage silly woman stuff, improper use of metaphors (badly, probably unintentionally, used some metaphors in past and present respect to write poetically rather than a future respect to describe something that there simply isn't a word on (i.e. If there is a primitive person who has never seen a plane before, the person would probably not call it a plane)), and some of it is morally wrong itself, but then there is the stuff on focus, the meaning of life, risk, and cynicism that gives a person knowledge.
From my perspective, hopefully parts of Anna Nicole Smith's movie "illegal aliens" are accurate representations of some life's technology in outer space and other planets somewhere because they would give those non-earthlings one reason to not offer to abduct some of us. That is if Area-51 invents volumetric display technology like in the
BlackSite: Area 51 demo...an M4 assault rifle mated with an M203-style grenade launcher. The sighting on the M4 looked high-tech; possibly holographic
http://previews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1526/BlackSi te-Area-51/p1/ Since, the alien women in "illegal aliens" have hologram technology, they won't bother trying to eek a plan for a volumetric display from some earthly scientists. -
What edict?
How does your alleged edict explain Football Manager? See that big "Hard Drive Required" stamp on the cover?
But it's a silly argument even besides the imaginary edict: Oblivion on 360 does use the hard drive to cache. If you don't have a hard drive it doesn't. Very simple stuff, and Oblivion is hardly the only 360 game to do this. -

Re:Hardware Vs Firmware
If you look at the Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable", you can see they have a special connector at the xbox end of things, it outputs both audio and video.
Wouldn't it be possible for them to make a new cable that has a HDMI or DVI connector on the other end? I would guess that port outputs digital and it's converted in the cable to whatever formats they need. For example the above cable's has a toslink plug for digital audio - it plugs right into the cable's connector, not the xbox.
The other thing that makes me think this is possible is that Todd Holmdahl said in an older interview, that "We're poised to hit the sweet spot of the HD market at launch and as the market matures, and we will provide an HDMI for our customers when it makes sense.". -

Re:How will Bungine handle's Epic's GoW lies?
This is 720p, and looks in-game to me. In fact, all of these latest screenshots do. Granted, the original (which was also 720p, by the way) is slightly smoother, but if you think the screenshot you posted, along with the screenshots out now aren't good representations of the game, you're delusional.
