Re:FutureQuest! I SECOND THAT!I ditto the recommendation of FutureQuest. I've been with them for over 4 years now, after almost 8 years of hopping from Webcom, Hiway Technologies and Verio (ack). FQ is hands down, the best hosting service I've ever done business with. They run Linux, and they offer all of the things the OP wanted, and more. Server uptime and performance has never been a problem, either. I can't say enough good things about these guys (and im not getting paid to say that either).
What sold me on them initially was the complete lack of complaints (and unending praise from Perl/PHP developers like me) on thier user message boards. A hosting provider can post all the cool technical features of thier service on thier website, but it doesn't mean diddlysquat if your customer service sucks (IOW, Verio).
Terra, their admin, really knows what he is doing, and is extremely helpful and responsive with user tech. requests. God, he even installed ImageMagick , after much user prodding!
You will NOT be sorry you went with FutureQuest.

Sodamistic
You just brought back one of those embarrassing first job moments. Worse than selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door, it was selling home pop-machines! Evil company called 'sodamistic', long-since-defunct, I'm sure.
A valuable formative experience in the sleazy world of hard-sell direct sales, it lets me watch movies like Tin Men or Boiler Room with an insider's appreciation, and more importantly, it taught me the importance of never ever letting a salesman inside your house. (Not that time-share group sales pitches are much better.)
For those who are interested, a google search for sodamistic turned up a minor reference in the comments section of this totally on-topic to this story web page: How to Make Your Own Carbonated Soda (Coke, Pepsi, ...). -
Even if this is a fake......RockStar should take that idea and run with it! Vice City is great, but after this long, it's starting to get old.
I'd love nothing more than to toast Wayne Newton with a Flame Tank!

Re:so?
If its that its being used...wah.
They're welcome to introduce whatever technology they want; if the market doesn't buy it, it will go away on its own. Witness the "Processor Serial Number," a good idea IMO which barfed in the marketplace because so many people screamed "Big Brother". (Apparently, those people had never heard of MAC addresses (which can be spoofed, but so can a PSN))
If its that its being patented - can someone explain why it isn't a valid patent?
Well, take a look at the patent. Specifically, examine Claim 1, which is the keystone of any patent:
What is claimed is:
1. A mechanism for detecting and deterring over-clocking of a clock signal for use in a processor, comprising:
a detection circuit adapted to detect over-clocking of a clock signal for use in the processor based on a reference signal; and
a prevention circuit adapted to prevent over-clocking of said clock signal by limiting or reducing performance of the processor in response to detection of said over-clocking of said clock signal.
Now answer this: Where's the invention?
There is nothing in Claim 1 that is novel in any way. In fact, there is nothing in the entire patent that isn't taught in high-school level electronics and programming classes! Compare the frequency of two oscillators, and then branch software based on the ratio. Yeah, THAT's innovative.
I found two typos (ex: "system basis input/output start up (BIOS)") on my first pass reading the patent, and they've had FOUR YEARS to proofread the thing.
So, I have no beef with anti-overclocking tech; it will sell or it won't. Big whoop. But patents like this one only clog the system and interfere with legitimate innovation.
For example, if I'm using a DSP in a medical device, I want to make sure that it's coming up with the correct answers. One key thing I'd want my hardware to do would be to verify the processor frequency is accurate. If the clock is wrong, I need to compensate for the error. Guess what? I just violated Claim 1 of Intel's patent! If I want the device to indicate there's a clock problem, I've busted several more claims, in particular Claim 25.
The only good thing about this patent is that it makes such a great example of Patent Bloat.

what's with googlesyndication?
I've been seeing ads everywhere (including slashdot), that use "pageads.googesyndication.com" as their URL. They're frames (or iframes or something), with a bunch of textads.

Super-heroes and Back Problems
First Superman (Christopher Reeve), now Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire)? You'd think that powers like being invulnerable and spider-sense would be able to keep these actors/super-heroes out of trouble. Could it be that our childhood idols aren't as indestructable as we were led to believe?

An interesting approach!
Maybe not when it came to mathematics, but whenever I tried to teach myself a new programming language by (initially) reading a book, I never got very far because I tried to understand everything chapter by chapter. More often than not I ended up having to go back and read chapters, and frankly it was very frustrating!
Perhaps I (and anyone else who has experienced) would do well to revisit these books using this prescanning approach.

Encrypted disk images rock.
Encrypted disk images are really easy to use on OS X. They're encrypted using AES-128 (much more secure than the above hardware solution) and the performance is really quite good (fast enough to playback Quicktime movies from, even on a G3.) The Apple KBase entry on how to use them is here.

Re:agent identification for SafariI'm glad the KHTML developers are more openminded than you.
The way I see it, apple's simply walked in, ripped off YEARS of work done by the KDE team and gotten it all for free. Isn't there something that can be done about this?
Sure, they could have implemented it as a closed source project. What part of "open" are you not understanding? -
Wow!
A post sporting links to shorl.com and tinyurl.com that is being modded up! What is the world coming to?
-
Re:sigIf you want to post really long URL's take a look a http://shorl.com. This is a site that provides shorter alias to URL's that you supply. The alias can then be posted to newsgroups, slashdot, etc, without fear of being broken up. There is also http://tinyurl.com, which does the same thing.
Of course, as moderation of this post shows, both of them are unfortunately also rather useful for trolling, so I'm not sure how long you'll be able to use these.

Online Petition to Stop these Music Royalties!
Please, support the petition that we are sending to the Finnish Government to protest this outrageous and unfair act. As a close relative of mine in Finland is a taxi driver and barely makes enough to support his family, these kinds of royalties are putting him out of money. With enough signitures, we can let the Finnish government know that we will not stand for it.
