The problem with the criminally self righteous...
Is that they think the world would be genuinely better paved over in their morality. Until these clowns get that this is pornography, and this is simply adult entertainment, I can't imagine we will have a sane conversation about the subject. Plain and simple, if you don't like it, don't watch it. If others don't want their children seeing it, then they are perfectly capable of making sure their children are insulated from it. How any of this issue is improved by the inclusion of David Cameron's big fat nose is a complete and total mystery.

Re:and salon
http://hellothereracists.tumblr.com/ salon just made a decent argument lambasting them for outing kids in a manner that could permanently stigmatize them as racists. Granted I think arresting the penchant for racism at a young age is a good idea, perhaps it would be more fruitful if the parents of the children were outed instead?
I think that it's a wonderful idea to out these teenagers. The adults *should* be forever branded as they should know better. For the teenagers, being outed can teach two important lessons:
1. Perception is reality. How you are perceived (accurately or not) is, as far as other people are concerned, who you are. Period. If these kids are posing or trying to be contrary/obnoxious/unpleasant just to be "different" or rebellious, they can learn the error of their ways.
2. Sometimes it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt. IMNSHO, there are many people who could stand to learn that lesson.Among normal people, youthful indiscretions are often chalked up to immaturity and teenage rebellion. Bandying the 'N' word around in unpleasant ways on Facebook is one thing. Burning a cross on a lawn or bombing a black church (or advocating similar violent acts) is something completely different.
For the intellectually challenged, here's the difference -- one is distasteful and rude, the other is incitement to violence. One is obnoxious, the other can often be a felony.

Usual jerks
On the actual site (quit linking to some blog that links to a site of interest, Slashdot submitters), it's just typical jerks, mostly in high school. Somebody at the Secret Service will have to read through all that dreck looking for someone who might conceivably be a threat. It's mostly just kids mouthing off. Ones who are both making threats and have guns may get some attention.
It's sad reading the Facebook pages of some of those people. Their future is dim. For white people with only a high school education, life in the US has become slightly worse each year since 1973. For them, there is no American Dream. Hard work is no longer enough. Of course they're angry. The GOP and Fox News exploit and direct that anger at Obama, but they didn't create it.

Annnd, it's gone already. Or it's gone at the moment.
Not clear if the author took it down, if this is an automated reaction to problem reports on Tumblr, or if Tumblr itself took it down for Reasons.

additionally, many of the posts come from regions of America that you would anticipate racism to emanate from. at very least it helps to dispel the often heralded myth by of the GOP that racism happened a long time ago and we don't need to talk about it, as they did during the Treyvon Martin murder. The south, as a touchstone example, while forced to integrate has never been forced to accept it socially. -

Your best guide to entrapment. Basically if you're in a swarm, chances are very slim you'll find any entrapment defense since you were already predisposed to commit the crime. However in a civil case you may get some help from the unclean hands doctrine, they can't cause copyright infringement and then claim damages from it. They can only claim damages on things you did on your own.

High School in the early 80s (with examples!)
Computers were pretty new there, school got PETs, my brother and I did pretty well with them after we aced the BASIC programming classes (which just went through a BASIC introduction book) we were given independent study assignments and also did some programming for the school (my brother absence list/overdue list, and I wrote some additional graphics routines for a BASIC CAD program for the mechanical drawing class). I also got to borrow a donated TRS-80 for a few months to play with - fun times.
Picture of the circa 1982 Calaveras High Computer Club - brother and I in the back with the Disk Drive (i'm facing the computer, brother is the guy with the wild hair), the rest were running with cassettes.
We also went to a regional programming competition a couple years - these rules were from our first year (1982) - which our team got fifth place - next year we got third place.

Re:iOmess 6
It's not just iOS6. The iPhone5 is seriously substandard. Purple photos, Apple Maps, iPhone5's inability to handle LTE and data concurrently, easily scratched paint, and the new docking port with $30 adaptor makes iPhone5 a real lemon...
Nevermind the actual specs. iPhone5 is slower than Samsung Galaxy S3 despite the fact that the S3 is three months older. iPhone5 doesn't have NFC. iPhone5 still has a tiny screen. iOS market share has been sliding for a while, but after a few million get burned with this device, I think iPhone6 will be a very tough sell.

Ensuring the Quality of Textbooks
If you want Open Textbooks, and there are many reasons to want them, you should not start by announcing to the world that you wrote the complete thing in a three day sprint. That's just handing a line to the commercial publishers to use in opposing such works.
Maybe not. But...:
If you are not going to do everything that a commercial publisher and their authors would do to ensure the quality of the work...
A teacher friend recently pointed out this quality of the work in textbooks to me. It seems like quality isn't what makes it hard to compete--rather, it's the same sort of things that made it hard for opensource software to compete with Microsoft et al.

You know how long it took Google and Nokia?
Apple users are saying, "we'll get that fixed next time."
Apple iPhone users have no idea what they're talking about.
Fixing a buggy application can be done in a point release of software. The app is irrelevant, everybody, their dog and their dog's fleas have map reading software. What they don't have is good data. Why? It's expensive.
Fixing terabytes to petabytes of poor data is an entirely different matter from upgrading a map reading application. There are really only 2 companies with good data. Google and Nokia. Both have been buying, assembling, collecting POI data and updating and fixing base map data for years.
To fix this Apple are probably going to have to spend a fortune on large amounts of data, infrastructure to handle it, thousands of people to manage and check it. Both, expensive and slow. Then there's the weird melting 3D world that's going to have to change entirely. They'll have to decide if it's worth doing it properly or if they still think they can do it on the cheap.
Looking at what they have right now, it absolutely will not be "fixed next time".

*Nokia* is the other mapping giant
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_map_services
People forget they bought Navteq in 2007. Wonder why they did that now...
Yahoo maps: Nokia
Garmin: Nokia data
Mapquest: Nokia data
Navigon: Nokia data
Onstar: Nokia data
Amazon: Nokia maps
Microsoft Bing maps: See the Nokia logo at the bottom?
Pretty much every in car system on the planet uses Nokia data. The list just goes on and on. But why would a ***mobile*** phone company care? Did you notice I highlighted the word "mobile"?
Now look at their new phones, the 920 now has "citylens" which is first generation augmented reality. You can use it to "see through" buildings to find things nearby. They added Nokia Transport public transport and Nokia Drive turn by turn navigation. Their music app gives you nearby gigs.
Nokia phones are going to be *highly* context aware, with superb 2D & 3D data and superb POIs. Google's the only other company which is even close with respect to mapping on mobiles. As you've seen
http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/
Apple Maps is now *years* (longer) behind in terms of data, they have a vast area to cover. They totally blew it when they told Google to go take a running jump.
What I find amusing is that Apple have a hundred billion dollars that they have no idea what to do with. Looks like they're now going to have to try and hire thousands of Nokia and Google map experts (and no, we're not just talking about software developers, they are ten a penny in comparison).

Re:New positions?
They have to pay for the ex-Google Mappers somehow. It's either that or convince people to start renaming continents.
Didn't Samsung recently sue LG for hiring their ex-OLED developers? Could Google do the same? After all, tech-theft is a legidimate thing to go to court over...

It seems someone at Apple is reading xkcd: http://what-if.xkcd.com/10/
And all those distorted map image makes sense once you realized Apple is mapping our dreams, Inception style. -
Re:That's the thing - it is not "very poor"
That's what is inaccurate.
I agree that it is inaccurate to say that Apple Maps is poor, I'd say its a compile pile of sh*t!
Perhaps you can live with the fact that Apple thinks that the Washington monument has been moved, or that the Berlin wall has been resurrected in the middle of Montreal, but when they "forget" the second biggest city in Sweden entirely (Gothenburg), I ask you, is not "very poor" an understatement?

Re:Well don't look to Google for answers!
Hmmm, I've seen that list somewhere before.
Yes, that was my original source for some of the links.
Hard to credit an AC though.
Is this now the standard reply trotted out to rebuff the iOS6 map problem?
Since people seem hell-bent on posting the Tumblr link to every possible place, no matter how inappropriate - why not? Why is the Tumblr link the only thing it's OK to repost again and again? Where the Tumblr link goes, Google's own baggage follows.
And the list will keep growing as we remember that over the years Google Maps has had many, many flaws as well, as people remember the Google map failures we have seen in our own personal lives through the years.
The other funny thing about posting that Tumblr link is that from time to time it shows Apple maps are better in some cases.
Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to point that out.
Note that as always, I'm not saying Apple's maps do not need work on fixing issues. But it's not like running back to Google solves all your problems. That's certainly not the case for 3D maps.

Re:This.
It's not like they don't need help...
Actually, a good chunk of those funny blunders falls into the third of these categories of problems with Apple's iOS 6 Maps:
- 1. Functionality that was there in the old (Google Maps-based) version, and that was lost in the new one.
- 2. Errors due to outdated or incomplete information, which conduces to bad navigation directions, misplaced locations, and other funny results. (That is, funny if you are not depending on the feature).
- 3. Errors in rendering of certain features (Hoover Dam, Eiffel Tower) which can be quite hilarious.
The first category includes things like directions for public transportation, pedestrians, and bike trails, as well a more robust search system, but it doesn't produce funny errors, they don't get pointed out very often.
The second category makes a good chunk of the hilarity, but it's something that Apple will (slowly) correct as they refine their databases. Google has many years of headstart here, so it's no wonder their database is in much better shape.
The third category is the one that produces the most hilarious errors but... well, it turns out that it reflects artifacts in the renderings produced by the flyover feature, a feature that AFAIK is not really part of Google Maps, and thus the criticism is rather silly!
Yes, Google has similar flyovers in Google Earth, but that's a separate product. Furthermore, Google Earth is plagued by similar errors in rendering. Examples:
In Google Earth, go to this location in Houston: 29.713347 -95.382174, and follow the bayou (river) as it goes West and South-west towards the Texas Medical Center. See how all those bridges appear to sink to the level of the water? A similar example can be found in Philadelphia: 39.958905 -75.180871.tl;dr My point is: The 3D rendering errors are funny but not exclusive to Apple. The inaccurate database is easy to fix, but will take time. The missing features are the real problem and we don't know if Apple even intends to add them.

Re:Good luck with those new map service.
Misinterpreted destinations, sure, and those glitches aren't obvious if you don't know the area, so they can be very time consuming to find and correct. If you page through the Amazing Maps collection, you'll find a lot of stuff that is obviously messed up even to someone that doesn't know anything about geography, like clouds, warped roads, and complete mutilation.
Anyway, I don't have a horse in this race -- I just thought it was interesting to look at.

Re:nothing like a holodeck
>I was simply trying to say that various special effects on Star Trek were actually very expensive effects for the time.
Were they? I thought everything I read about it was that it was a somewhat low-budget show, even for the time (obviously not as low-budget a sitcom of course, but still). For instance, the thing that Dr. McCoy waved over people when using the medical tricorder? It was (IIRC) a chrome salt shaker someone got at a yard sale or thrift shop.
Edit: It turns out I'm wrong, it was actually rather expensive for the time. I guess the salt shaker was just convenient.
I'm no expert, but it seems like the "beaming" effect would be fairly simple to do with the existing film-based FX they used at the time, just some cutting and splicing along with fixed camera locations to show frames with and without the landing party, and then some kind of glitter effect added on top.
Good point on the video screen scenes.

Re:what about cost of charging iPad?
Cost to charge an iPad every other day for 1 year: $2
Cost to carry 1 pound of payload 1000 miles on a 777 is : $0.04
Average number of miles a 777 flys in a year : 150,000
In 1 year it takes the 150000/1000*0.04 $60 bucks to fly 1 pound of play load. The weight of the iPad is 2 pounds
In 1 year it takes $120 to fly an iPad.30 pounds of flight manuals takes 30*60=$1800
Replacing 30 pounds of flights manuals with an iPad saves $1680 every year. Of course this is just a rough back of the envelope calculation.
