Re:Yes and No.
That is not a valid comparison. You can't compare urban and rural properties, they are completely seperate in terms of valuation. Maybe you should go read a little bit before you start spewing bullshit anecdotal evidence, especially given that you live in Toronto, one of the most over-priced places in Canada.
Please see FML listings for more information as to how you're retarded.

Re:What's the hype?
When you mold something there is an inner mold and an outer mold. When the molding material sets the inner mold is withdrawn from the outer mold. If you look closely at any standard molded item you will find one end is slightly larger than the other. This allows the inner mold to come away from the mold material very quickly. As an exaggerated example, think of a cone pressed into clay. When you withdraw the cone a very little bit it no longer touches the clay. If the sides form a perfect cube the mold will be in contat through the entire withdrawal process. Think of the same thing but use s cylinder. During the withdrawal process the sides of the cylender are always in contact with the clay. This causes increased friction requiring more power, slower production rates and higher failure rates. One small adjustment in the design, 88 degree corners instead of 90 degree corners, could have save a significant amount of money but Jobs insisted on his design.
Until I pointed out all the software that came with it.
How many other companies wrote software for the Next? How many other hardware companies made hardware for the Next? Could it be possible that businesses and institutions did not want to purchase large numbers of computers from a start up headed by someone that was ousted from Apple?

Re:April
The name may be a joke, but the game isn't. Notch has been doing some development work including creating a virtual machine that he claims to have on his development system running 4000 instances of that VM simultaneously with only 50% of his development machine CPU bandwidth in use. Some details about the VM can be found here:
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/20056289891/start-classified-transmission
(note the date... not April 1st)He has been talking about this game for over a month, and a couple of days ago he tweeted out to his "fans" to give some name suggestions.
Almost everything on the "Mars Effect" website is pretty much a compilation of everything he has said about this game in terms of interviews, tweets, blog entries, and casual comments over a pint of beer in terms of his vision for the next big project he wants to be working on.
The game itself is very real, it is just that the name is something I strongly suspect and was something I noticed immediately after its name was announced. With Notch though, me might be saying "damn the torpedoes" and be willing to make everybody think it is a joke of a game too... if for nothing more than to get some fans off his back. Any time he makes reference to a website in his twitter feed, it often crashes to something like the Slashdot Effect in part because of how many people are following his tweets.

Re:amazing
Without commenting on how good the game is, it's not an innovative concept. The basic concept is taken from Infiniminer, and Notch has said as much.

Re:Apple Customers
Plus it has to serve up all those mobile ads
Average iAd size has been estimated at 5MB: "Assuming 5MB per iAd, this means that, under AT&T’s new data plan, the user has to pay to watch an ad. Either 40 cents or 6 cents depending on the package."
That's the size of the ad when you fucking click on it, not the size of the ad banner that you get served, you dimwit.
-
Re:Apple Customers
Plus it has to serve up all those mobile ads
You write as if the iPhone is immune to advertising. It isn't. When It Comes to Mobile Advertising, iPhone Still the Biggest Target Average iAd size has been estimated at 5MB: "Assuming 5MB per iAd, this means that, under AT&T’s new data plan, the user has to pay to watch an ad. Either 40 cents or 6 cents depending on the package."
so it might still use more data though not to the user's benefit
That study didn't include iPhone, but obviously iPhone apps with adverts are also going to consume more energy.

Re:great book!
I find http://reasoningwithvampires.tumblr.com/">this to be a pretty good analysis of just how bad the writing is. My wife is a librarian at a middle school here in Virginia, and she makes a point to keep up with popular fiction for middle-schoolers. She said that while the writing is awful, some of it was actually really good, but most of it was just padding.
We watched the first 3 movies together... well, at least sat in front of them while surfing on our laptops. I couldn't even get through the first one _with_ Rifftrax. The second and third were a little better; there was at least some decent action to break it up. But I just cannot understand being excited about a story where the main character's motivations are so illogical the only reasonable conclusion is that she's mentally ill... but the way it's portrayed I don't even think the author sees it that way. Plus Kristin Stewart is pretty, but she always looks like she's strong out on Quaaludes or something. She seems to only have two emotions: dull petulance and vacant infatuation. Sparkly boy is just pasty and creepy. At least Jacob had some redeeming qualities and doesn't look like someone who would sit around drinking absinthe and quoting Shelly purely for effect.
Meh. If I'm going to watch girl stuff, I'll stick with Jane Austen adaptations. The "Pride and Prejudice" with Colin Perth is really good. Superb production, acting, and music. My wife watches it about once every couple months or so. I mean, yeah, I'd rather be watching something like "Burn Notice", but I can appreciate stuff based on "real" literature. "Twilight" will be nothing but a historical footnote in a few decades while people will still be making new adaptations of Austen.

Re:Wait a minute there...
It's not a security update. This update is more like a complete rewrite and has very little to do with Microsoft. You see, for their first attempt Ford decided to outsource the project to a company called BSQUARE who put the UI together using Adobe Flash Lite. For some reason, the results were slightly less than stellar.
Anyway, the preliminary reviews of the new version sound promising so I am at least a little hopeful. I am still quite frustrated, however, that I've had to deal with such awful software for well over a year on a brand new vehicle that cost almost $40k. -
Re:Two compatible species
I've long thought that perhaps there are actually two distinct "human" species alive today. Sexually compatible, very closely related, but separate in that one is genetically pre-disposed to basically follow anyone around and do what they're told. While the other actually has whatever genetics lead to the logic to step back and think things through. The majority simply do not have that ability. Now that's not to say the "higher" order of humans always ends up in leadership roles. In fact I'd guess that it's more rare, being able to step back, think things through and realize that in a lot of situations there is no "good" outcome. They're more likely to try and just not get involved. They're also far more likely to be pushed down by the follower majority, as those people are instinctually terrified of not simply following whoever they've determined to be alpha.
"The human race is not divided into the irrational and the rational, as some idealists think. All humans are irrational, but there are two different kinds of irrationality â" those who love old ideas and hate and fear new ones, and those who despise old ideas and joyfully embrace new ones. Homo neophobus and homo neophilus. Neophobus is the original human stock, the stock that hardly changed at all for the first four million years of human history. Neophilus is the creative mutation that has been popping up at regular intervals during the past million years, giving the race little forward pushes, the kind you give a wheel to make it spin faster and faster. Neophilus makes a lot of mistakes, but he or she moves. They live life the way it should be lived, ninety-nine percent mistakes and one percent viable mutations."

Im using the word the way Brian Ford defined it: take the idea, but make it your own. Dont just copy it; be inspired by it, and improve upon it.

Re:Right WingersYou'll probably like the Lamb Of God frontman who's standing for election.
My first act as President of the United States will to be shot. That’s right, SHOT. With a high-powered assault rifle. Immediately after taking the oath of office, I will be escorted about twenty yards away and be shot publicly in a non-lethal area of my body by a highly trained Navy SEAL sniper. It will hurt like fuck. Why would I do this? Because I will now be commander-in-chief of the armed forces. This means that during my term I will probably have to make some tough decisions affecting the survival of other men. And as commander-in-chief, I shouldn’t expect anyone in our military to do anything I’m not willing to do myself. That includes getting shot. Me being shot will be broadcast live world-wide via satellite, with no bleeping out of the incredible string of curse words I will undoubtably let fly with. I will be required to walk/limp/crawl on my own power a minimum of 50 yards through the mud to an ambulance that will take me away to patch me up. If I can’t make it on my own, I’m not tough enough to be your President.

Re:Why would it be radically different?
The logo is on the back, not the front. The proportions seem different when side by side when seen from a JPEG found on the net, in real life when sitting on a desk the proportional differences are not easy to spot. The iPad's Home Button is the same color as the bezel and has a teeny little icon on it, rendering it virtually invisible.
Meanwhile, the shape is virtually the same. The back casing is a similar metallic color that reaches all the way to the edge. The rounded corners are pretty much the same size. The buttons are in a similar arrangement, etc.
Eh fuggit, look at the pictures.
We can argue about how similar it is until the sun comes up, the fact is even Samsung's own lawyers couldn't tell them apart in front of the judge.

Not exactly, he was the internet expert.
-
Re:if you were stuck in Iran..
You do realize that civilians are still dying in Iraq and our armed forces are not there.
. I am an Iraq veteran and I can tell you that in 2005, 99% of all civilian deaths came from terrorists.
Anecdotal claims from a soldier in the conflict are not evidence. Please provide a citation for this "99%" figure. Back in 2004 the Iraqi Health Ministry stated that coalition forces were killing twice as many civilians than the insurgents were: More Iraqi Civilians Killed by US Forces Than By Insurgents, Data Shows.

Correction: two climate scientists
And about 14 busybodies with no experience in climate science
Here's the whole list:
- Claude Allegre, former director of the Institute for the Study of the Earth, University of Paris; Can't figure out what they do, except that at one point, Allegre claimed that asbestos was harmless...
- J. Scott Armstrong, cofounder of the Journal of Forecasting and the International Journal of Forecasting; A market forecaster. Not someone I'd glorify with the title of scientist...
- Jan Breslow, head of the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics and Metabolism, Rockefeller University; What does he have to do with climate research?
- Roger Cohen, fellow, American Physical Society; See above
- Edward David, member, National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences; "Member"? What's his specialization? No info, no published papers,... Apparently he worked at ExxonMobil.
- William Happer, professor of physics, Princeton; Specialist in optics, receives funding from George Marshall institute.
- Michael Kelly, professor of technology, University of Cambridge, U.K.; Yet another as above...
- William Kininmonth, former head of climate research at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology; Contrarian climate scientist... Only one upto now...
- Richard Lindzen, professor of atmospheric sciences, MIT; The other climate scientist of the bunch
- James McGrath, professor of chemistry, Virginia Technical University; No idea how he's connected...
- Rodney Nichols, former president and CEO of the New York Academy of Sciences; No specialization given; I assume he's not a climate scientist?
- Burt Rutan, aerospace engineer, designer of Voyager and SpaceShipOne; I respect Rutan, but he's no climate scientist either
- Harrison H. Schmitt, Apollo 17 astronaut and former U.S. senator; He's a geologist IIRC; not a climate scientist
- Nir Shaviv, professor of astrophysics, Hebrew University, Jerusalem; Astrophysics != climate physics
- Henk Tennekes, former director, Royal Dutch Meteorological Service; Bit more difficult... He apparently believes that there's no need for computer modeling of anything, and used the Bible as justification for his solitary views on many subjects. Ousted from his post, probably bears a grudge. The last bit about the Bible makes me skeptical of calling him a "scientist", leave alone a climate scientist.
- Antonio Zichichi, president of the World Federation of Scientists, Geneva. Apparently a particle physicist, not a climate scientist!
So, the score stands at two real climate scientists (of whom Lindzen is one I've heard of before), one dubious former director and 13 jokers in the pack.

Questioning
That is incorrect. He is not currently charged with anything. That is a bit of confusion or disinformation that has been floating around and darn near impossible to correct. He is wanted for questioning and that questioning, technically, could take place over the phone just as well as in person. Maybe people just assume that because they are trying to extradite him that he is actually charged with something, but no, that is not the case. He is not charged with anything.

Re:The Curse of the Rounded Rectangle
If you really think that the only thing that makes it similar-looking to Apple products is "rounded rectangles," then you're intentionally being obtuse for whatever reason. There comes a point where it's obvious that other companies are liberally borrowing from Jonathan Ive's design shop at Apple.
Vizio's PC concept looks like this. The keyboard looks just like Apple's flat keyboard introduced a few years ago, the trackpad is a clone of the Apple Trackpad, and though it's less of a copy than the others, the screen is certainly reminiscent of an iMac, especially taken as a whole with the rest of the components.
I'm not surprised at all that, with all the design work Apple puts into its products, it is going to try to protect that work from knockoffs. Not only is this taking advantage of design work done at Apple, but if the products turn out to be low-quality or problematic, their resemblance to existing Apple products ends up damaging Apple's brand as well. I realize Slashdot comments tend to have an Apple slant (to put it mildly), but come on, this is completely obvious "inspiration" from Apple.
I think what really goes on here is that some people just don't want to give Apple credit for anything, and they hate when people do credit them, so when comparisons between designs are pointed out, it pisses them off and they make snarky remarks about "rounded rectangles."

Yeah, sure, because NLP can show you George Washington and call you an ambulance.
In the end you still just stick to fixed forms for queries so you'll be 90% sure it won't get you surprising results.
Also, do you really think "specific syntax" for voice search means something like "NEWFILE DD DSN=MYFILE01,UNIT=DISK,SPACE=(TRK,50,10),DCB=BLKSIZE=1000," in modern age, and not "{[how do i] drive|[give me] directions|path|...} [to] $location {, pretty please|and make it fast}?"?
