Re:That's the real meaning of "voting with your fe
In the world of Star Trek, they don't have to work at all. Their food and shelter are all freely available as I understand it. There is no motivation to get rich because there is little consequence to one's survival. One doesn't fear for his family's future if his job is lost. His power isn't cut off for non-payment. At the core of every person seeking wealth, it is the consequence of not being wealthy that drives them.
This makes me think more of the monologue at the beginning of the original Planet of the Apes movie.

Re:They made it like Star Wars
> I'm unhappy that the odds of any of the TNG, DS9 or even Voyager characters to appear any more are very low
1) They're too old.
2) They don't deserve to.
The problem is, at the logical time to do such an ensemble film, -- say, around summer, 2001 -- enough of us had gotten so sick and tired of the whole thing that there couldn't possibly be a market.
In my personal opinion, aside from a few brief flashes, Trek ran out of steam in the latter seasons of TNG, when the writing drifted from true moral dilemma to technobabble-of-the-week. Yes, there was still a lot of standing around and talking, (God, was there...) so if you didn't actually listen to what they were saying, you could still get the impression that the show was still about Ideas rather than Space Battles. But it was all a sham. Let's face it -- solemn music and serious expressions can't save you from horrible writing.
It's not the fault of the actors. Perhaps if, say, the cast of TNG had pulled a Christian Bale and refused to do Nemesis unless the script improved... oh, let's face it, there would have been one less Star Trek movie. But I would have been about $30 richer, and would certainly have found something more productive to do with that 116 minutes.

Re:Reality check people
Not killing civilians. The whole issue is that Hamas has the sympathy of the people because of what Israel does, if Israel would oppress and kill Palestina people on a regular basis Hamas would have very little ground to stand on. You seem to have a problem understanding that in a cycle of violence there isn't a single guilty party, the action of party A are directly caused by party B and vice a versa. If you retaliate after every problem you can continue that cycle for a long long time.
Lol.. You must be ignoring things on purpose. You see, Hamas does A, Israel responds with B. Hamas won't stop A because of X, Y, or Z or anything else they have tried. Israel has to resort to B or live with Rockets and mortars spreading havoc on their cities causing property damage and loss of life.
If there is a problem here, it is that Hamas continues to do A. Israel won't stop B until Hamas stop's A. B is the result of A therefore A needs to be taken care of so B can go away. The problem as you see it is one of communication. You don't seem to get that B is a result of A, it is an attempt to stop A. If A went away, B would stop. If it looked like B was going to stop for good, X and Y would most likely go away too. The idea that Israel is killing civilians is only because the Cowardly Hamas is hiding in them and doing A, essentially putting them in danger. The UN "aid" truck that was hit had fertilizers and components for the rockets that were banned in the area, the head master at one of the schools hit was a lead Hamas Rocket engineer and was killed outside one loading rockets onto a truck, the other school was hit by the weapons cache and not the tank SABO round that targeted the hamas operatives. It was actually their ordinances that caused the damage to the school. But Hamas has some help in their slanting of the activities.
If you want to do something, they could have installed some Phalanx anti-missile units.
Well, maybe you were thinking of the Phalanx CIWS or this and this
My understanding is that there simply aren't enough of these that can be deployed as of yet. I'm not even sure that we are selling them to Israel but we are deploying them in our two wars as fast as they can be built. You would need quite a few of them because you would need to protect the entire Gaza border. Those do great jobs protecting a ship or a small base (Multiple units can link together and protect larger areas). I believe the Australians have a modified version for their navy ships that use 50cal ammo instead of the 20mm which isn't nearly as effective. I can't find any data on it's success rates but I think they got most of the bugs out. Ideally, Hamas could be convinced to stop fireing rockets. But they can't be, they are the KKK of the middle east and won't stop until either they are dead or the jews are. It looks like they are on the losing end of that. Maybe this system can be installed in teh future and make the rockets and mortars of Hamas pointless and obsolete.

Re:Desktop? Where's the notebook?
The first PC's came out in the mid 1980's - they had 4.77 Mhz 8088 CPU with a 10 MByte hard disk drive, CGA/EGA video cards, and cost around $3000.
PC's in the late 1980's were 20 MHz 80286's with 40 MByte hard disk drives, VGA video cards.
PC's in the early 1990's were 100 Mhz 80386's with 200 MByte hard disk drives and
PC's in the late 1990's were 500 MHz Pentium III's with 40 Gigabyte hard disk drives, and SVGA video cards.Animations which were rendered using a supercomputer in real-time back in the 1990' can now be animated in real-time on a single PC.
I'm looking at top end PC's now - it is amazing what is on offer: quad-core 3Ghz with 4 GB memory, 1 GByte video card, 500 GByte hard disk drive, 1000 Gigabit Ethernet. The only limitation seems to be the 32-bit addressing space of the CPU.

Re:That's Not "Ironic"
White a pile of garbage! I happen to be a Pakistani in Pakistan and as I peer out my window, there is no 'civil war' going on here. The military doesn't "control the country by force". Please provide input on a subject that you know something about.I'd be very relieved to hear I was mistaken. Most of my understanding is from this documentary from 2007 I believe. It shows an interview with the head of the ISI, who states that every good Muslim should be hoping for the defeat of the NATO forces in Afghanistan. The journalist is a moderate muslim(a former Pakistani if memory serves), and travels into Northern Pakistan and is told by the people he meets with there that the extremists still control much of the region. Many people who spoke with were terrified of speaking out against the mullahs, because a fatwah would be issued and they would be killed.
You talk of Pakistan's tribal area being beyond the control of our government. Have you ever considered that other than a few residential districts in Kabul, ALL OF AFGHANISTAN IS OUT OF NATO'S BLOODY CONTROL. Put your money and grunts where your mouth is and plug the holes. And if you're scared of the sting then at least learn not to throw stones at hornets nests. To be blunt, I'm not as worried about Afghanistan because there aren't any nuclear missiles sitting around in it. Additionally, this is the first time I've ever heard the suggestion that the Taliban fighters are leaking into Pakistan from the other way around. I've got friends over in Afghanistan who will be back in a few weeks, hopefully I can get some first hand confirmation on which direction attacks are originating from. If you've got some sources it'd be great as well.
As for the last comment about throwing stones, in case you've forgotten, it was Osama Bin Laden that stirred this hornets nest.

Re:Ballistic trajectory? You wouldn't expect the astronauts would have an overriding degree of control over their flight plan. I'm really glad you're not in charge of designing equipment controls. If that were the case why bother with cockpit flight controls or for that matter humans. Humans are awesome at compensating for damage. Nearly every system in our bodies handles degradation of some form another, and compensates for it. That extends all the way to our behavior too.
This video sums it up:

Just like the film, same guys over and over...
Most studio films avoid recycling their voice actors in obvious ways, but this is far from the case for television where they are expected to voice at least THREE characters without "overtime pay". Think of your favorite cartoon and how many speaking characters might appear during the course of a single 22-minute episode, and you could probably still get all of the voice actors in a phone booth (without it having to be a TARDIS).
Let's look at The Simpsons, for example:
Dan Castellaneta: Homer Simpson, Grampa Abraham Simpson, Barney Gumble, Krusty the Clown, Groundskeeper Willie, Mayor Quimby, Hans Moleman, Sideshow Mel, Itchy, Kodos, Gil, Poochie, Squeaky-Voiced Teen, Burn's Lawyer, Mr. Teeny, Bill Clinton
I will refrain from doing the same for Hank Azaria or Harry Shearer, but most notable is the number of major characters that are the ONLY one performed by a given actor: Lisa Simpson is voiced by Yeardley Smith, who does no other characters (major or minor). Julie Kavner covers Marge and both sisters, which makes sense (they're SUPPOSED to sound a lot alike).
So just like the Omaha Beach film, you can cover a lot of ground with a small handful of talented, motivated, and organized voice actors, or possibly just one. The difference is that this is not new and has never required a lot of technology -- as amply demonstrated by Mel Blanc.

Re:Tinfoil
I found this to be a good documentary on the subject overall:
The only part that bugged me was the journalist's asinine assertion that today's youth don't know about Tiananmen... that's absurd. You've got a Western camera pointed at them for something that will obviously be aired publicly somewhere, good luck having them say ANYTHING but the party line.

Re:Autostitch licensee?
No, it's far more advanced than that, as its recognition is able to match objects that are not directly from the same set of photos, or even all photos, some can be diagrams or drawings for example.
The part that blew me away is the SeaDragon technology behind the image/information scaling portion of things... now that is just incredible... check out a talk/demo at TED on March of 2007 by Blaise Aguera y Arcas of Microsoft, just amazing stuff. -
There are two kinds of webmasters
There are essentially two kinds of webmasters today Those that use FF and hate IE, and consequentially develop bugs fixes for it after it is working properly FF. Those that use IE and test for it because change is hard and difficult. more than that though, the second category is frequently upper management. They look at a stats chart and see that 70% of the internet uses IE, so they ask their coders to design for IE. FF becomes collateral damage for MS specific programs that the coders use as modules. There is only so much time to work on any given project and the decision gets made to save time by rolling with these packages. There does appear to be a silver lining this cloud though. I've been working at videosift for a while, and our FF base is at around 45% of 20,000 unique ip's a day. We actually offer features for ff that are not available to IE users because of problems with the IE browser. I see this a lot with newer sites. OSS has dropped the barrier to entry in the web market and consequently lots of new widgets are optimized for firefox. Sure there are lots of sprockets for IE, but we all know a widget is almost as good as a self sealing stem bolt.

Re:Yeah, this is chump change...
I can see there will be no way of convincing you otherwise as with comments like "the US military is the police force of the world" you're obviously of the opinion that it's the US's job to protect all us other helpless little countries.
But your comment of : "Education (K-12) is already being given ungodly amounts of money" is just pure fallacy.
See here.
Defense spending gets 54Billion dollars out of 983Billion, while your precious military gets... wait for it... 439Billion dollars!
Almost HALF of all the tax money collected goes to the military, while a measly 5% goes to education.
And you think that's right?
That's just insanely stupid... insanely so.
And, to make it even simpler, try this: The U.S. Defense Budget, Explained with OREO Cookies
It just doesn't make sense.
But hey, if you'd prefer to think that it's the US's 'job' to 'police' the world then you just go right ahead. -
