GNAA Announces Project to Port Slashcode to ASPNETGNAA Announces Project to Port Slashcode to ASP.NET
Fremont, California - In a surprise announcement, GNAA has announced a truce and alliance with the popular news for trolls website Slashdot.
GNAA member godspeed broke the news at an early-evening press conference, announcing that GNAA would cease trolling the website, and will instead work with the current Slashdot staff on porting the Slashcode to ASP.NET, to be run under IIS.
"We've had our difference with Slashdot in the past," godspeed began, "but with recent slowdowns in performance on the website, they have finally realized that Opensource is indeed dead, and it's time to move on and replace their antiquated codebase with something that will meet the modern day's needs. We're pleased to be given the opportunity to work with the Slashdot staff on making this port. Of course, the new code will not be opensourced, an NDA will be signed in blood by all who see it and if you release it, the penalty... well, you've seen what happened to Nick Berg, Paul Johnson, and the others. Major changes to be implemented include the removal of goatse link evasion, major overhauls to the karma system, and the replacement of pinkpages with LastMeasure,"
At this point godspeed turned the podium over to fellow GNAA member goat-see and stormed out of the room. goat-see offered to take any questions the audiencemembers have. When asked why there were no Slashdot representatives at the conference, he was quick to reply "You can speak to CowboyNeal outside after we're through here, we couldn't get that motherfucker in here without widening the doorframes. Next question?," eliciting a hearty chuckle from the audience. When asked the reason for the sudden change in relations with Slashdot, goat-see paused to think for a moment, before answering "Our historical differences were meant to hilight the flaws in the Slashdot system. As soon as the staff realized what an impacted shitpile their site was and the need to update it, we were the first to volunteer to assist in the migration. We look forward to seeing the hight performace of ASP.NET pages with a MS SQL backend as much as any other nigger out there."
bare, a GNAA member sitting in the audience, stood up and confirmed this announcement with a hearty "LOL." goat-see concluded the conference at that point, saying "If you have any further questions, please direct them to new GNAA member Wil Wheaton, now let's all go outside and poke that fat fuck CowboyNeal with sticks."

Re:Curious about timing
NDA. Or you break their hands.
For example, Wil Wheaton's appearance on the World Poker Tour celebrity game. He's signed an NDA, and he's not talking about it. Well, other than the fact that it happened. -

NCC 1701-D on Blaster
The conference room used for the first discussions had been converted to a war room. The whiteboards were filled with IP addresses gathered by the help desk of systems suspected of being infected and trying to propagate the worm. Another list for all of the nonfunctional pay systems covered the entire portable whiteboard. These systems would have to be patched before they could be used to receive payments again.
Red Alert! All senior officers to the battle bridge. Prepare for saucer seperation in T minus 3 minutes and counting.
Picard: Data, can you locate the origin of infection?
Data: It will take aproximatly 10 minutes to scan each subnet.
Picard: We don't have that kind of time. Number One, options?
Riker: Disconnect the OC3 and raise the firewall, leave no ports open.
Captain: That should buy us some time but we need a better solution than that.
Diana: I am sensing something captain, it feels as if the SUS server has fallen offline, we may have missed the latest patches
Data: Her hypothesis could be correct
We are the Borg, We will assimilate you!
Captain: Damn, and here I was thinking it was The Boy and his nanites again
No offense Wil :) -
Donate Gmail invitations to troopsAs suggested over at Wil Wheaton's blog, 1 gig of space is a perfect amount for troops to recieve/send videos and other keep-in-touch files that other web accounts can't handle.
From the entry:
Help spread the word about this effort, and keep checking back here for a link to the soon-to-be-built clearinghouse for requests.
A worthy cause, I should think. Currently, I believe people are just looking over at gmailswap for service men and women to donate their invites to, until this 'clearinghouse' is created.
I thought some slashdotters might be willing to participate. -

Donate those invites!
Wil Wheaton [clevernickname] is working on a project to donate Gmail invites to soldiers serving overseas who all have Hotmail which sucks. Go to his weblog entry for the skinny.

Re:Brains?
Especially in the case of this loser.

Re:Wired article
It is for this loser.

why 'all of a sudden'?
It's probably all Wheaton's fault.

Re:Quick!Let's assume there are some aliens out there who want to solve the Kennedy assassination for us next year.
What, they'll come down and admit they did it?
;-)Statistically speaking, it's more likely that they already know because they were there and saw it in real-time. Or that we could do like in The Light of Other Days (a good read, I recommend it) and peek back in time through quantum tunneling effects. Call Wesley, he'll know exactly what to do.

Re:Blog? How about design notes? It sounds like you're describing the type of blog that would appeal to you and that's great. But how exactly is that teenage girl you linked "forcing her life down your throat"? It seems more that you picked her blog out at random to illustrate your rant that some people have blogs that are of no interest to you. Just to turn it around, do you think that teenage girl would be interested in reading developers' blogs?
IMHO, 97% (or whatever high percentage) of anything that is popular is going to be crap, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the medium. Most of the songs on mp3.com for instance were shit but mp3.com was cool resource that turned up interesting artists from time to time. I think the blog scene could be looked at in the same way.

you should how this subject has created flamewars on wil wheaton's blog

So what if Wil Wheaton's project went awry, MST3k told me that nanites are cute and friendly

Re:it's a terrible idea
Want proof? Bloggers. Give even a cursory look at the personal "blogs" out there and you realize none of these people have even a semblance of a life.
*cough * counterpoints *cough *
Sidenote: normally at this point I end the post with a '-Colin' linked to my own blog in an attempt to drum up some traffic and increase my page rank -- but as it is about me being unemployed in London, it would only support the parent's point, so I won't mention it... well, sorta. -
Re:Wil WeatonHe didn't, altleast not acording to his blog:
I just found out that the director for I, Robot "didn't respond to any" of the tapes he saw, including mine.

Re:beg pardon?
Naw. Crusher got all funky in the end of the series and ran off with the Traveler. So who knows what he's capable of now.
Seriously, how many would tune in if Wil Wheaton reprised his role as (a more mature *cough*) Crusher on Enterprise? Its not like Rick Berman remembers what Trek is anymore.
-
Re:Are you really surprised?TNG was a character-driven show.
Finally, someone gets to the heart of why ST:TOS and ST:TNG ruled and everything else sucked. They were both very strongly character driven. TOS had an edge over TNG because instead of frustrated sitcom writers they had some very good science fiction writers (Ellison in his prime for one example...need I say more?) writing for them.
In ST:TNG you still had that emphasis on character development and story development. Even Wesley Crusher developed beyond the "brat on the Bridge" that every red-blooded trekker hated.
I blame Berman. Berman didn't "get it" from the very start. Instead of following in Roddenberry's footsteps and emphasizing story and character development, he emphasised bright shiny objects and fanservice.
It's time to put the whole ST continuum to bed. Say goodnight, Enterprise.
-
Re:FLOP?!?Acutally, we know that Nemesis tanked because our own Wil Wheaton had his scene cut.
And we all know what Enterprise really needed was an annoying genius kid that plays with nanites and goes to booty town with Ashley Judd, making the thousands of teenage geeks watching even more annoyed with him, the lucky bastard...

Wil WheatonWil Wheaton was up for a role in this, and the casting people seemed to think he was perfect for the part. However, the directory apparently didn't.
I would have loved to have seen him in something new. Star Trek would have you believe all he can do is say, "Yes, sir!" and push buttons, but after reading his site you sort of get to know the guy...

Re:Two great sites for Disney WeeniesHi there toqer,
Here's a towel to wipe the shit off your nose.
"Oh my god I'm actually 'talking' to Wesley Crusher! I'm hobnobbing with an honest to goodness D-list celebrity!"
Thanks for the laugh, kissass.
Sincerely,
Wil Wheaton

But the REAL geek candidate has to be...
Wesley Crusher (AKA Wil Wheaton, AKA CleverNickName on slashdot)!
C'mon! Let's all draft him! I mean, if a bodybuilder can become Governor... -
Will Wheaton, interviews with VH1.Re:Will Wheaton, actor, dead at 35.
I thought he died in a car accident?Actually, he's interviewing for a job on VH1
-
Re:Me Second
It's not like Will just accidentally stumbled into Slashdot today. He lives here, and has at least enough cred to deserve respect.
In short, he's one of us, so let the man be.
Please mod parent down as Troll.

As a side note, general bruce appearances will be listed on his website.

I think someone would disagree.

I don't know about this...
There's something about a blog that is entirely created and maintained by the blogger. I mean, would any of us really read wil wheaton's site if he just kept it at yahoo?
Nothing against yahoo or anything. It's great for people who don't have the resources or knowledge to maintain such a thing, but I doubt I'll be perusing the blogs on yahoo any time soon. Would you?

Re:V'ger
[OT] I recommend CleverNickName's book, "Dancing Barefoot", particularly the story "The Saga of SpongeBob VegasPants", which tells how he (a geek and long-time Star Trek fan) met William Shatner for the first time, and what a miserable experience it was. Quite amusing.

Clickable links for Peter Huber on science and ...
Peter Huber (engineering PHD from MIT; law degree from Harvard) has an interesting book out that deals with this issue:

StarTrek died the day it turned it into SF
The original StarTrek was cowboys in space.
It died the day they turned it into Science Fiction.
"What must have happened is a shift in the space time continuim" yawn
It must be a non story because there's nothing on here about it
All a big shame because I was really looking forward to being Nelix' apprentice and learning to fry insects in the MMORPG. Maybe I can be a space gardener instead!
-
Why?
Why would anyone want to watch Wil Wheaton's videos?
-
Re:Finally he's back in action
You're confusing Wil Wheaton with Will Wright. Will Wright wrote "The Sims". Maybe you should RTFA?

Dancing Barefoot
I'm personally awaiting my copy of "Dancing Barefoot", Wil Wheaton's new book. It's gotten good reviews from people that I respect: Steve Jackson of SJGames among them. I'm really looking forward to it. -
Re:JUST a Geek? Try Ubergeek.Being a TV actor has nothing to do with being a geek (except maybe negatively).
No, but being directly involved with the production of Star Trek adds geek points.Coding and maintaining a website does not provide any geek status anymore.
Actually, it does. Sure, anyone with the desire can create a website, but writing the code yourself using php instead of Front Page puts you far ahead of 90% of the personal sites on the web. Keep in mind that 90% of humanity still see computers as scary boxes, and writing any sort of code as advanced wizardry.being a blogger of any sort is a count against geekness
Again, no. Sure, anyone who wants to can do a blog, but it's the wanting to that adds a few points. See above.Free speech is good, but unrelated to geekness.
Agree, Free Speech is not limited to geeks, but it has always been a major facet of geek culture.Again, being on TV doesn't related to geekness
Agree in general, but guesting on and guest-hosting "The Screen Savers" implies a level of technological sophistication. Being on TSS and ST:TNG aren't like being on "Charles In Charge".Let's try another comparison: Wheaton vs Shatner.
Both were on Star Trek. To avoid 30 responses about the relative importance of the actors to the Trek universe, let's just say both were on the show and call it even.
Both have websites and blogs. Wheaton codes his from scratch using php, does all the design and content himself, and plays a certain role in the daily maintainance of the server itself. Shatner pays someone. Geekvantage: Wheaton.
I'd assume that Shatner has a PC. I have no idea what it runs, but I'd guess Windows. Wheaton proudly runs Linux. Geekvantage: Wheaton.
Wheaton worked on the Video Toaster. Shatner worked on TJ Hooker. Maybe Wil didn't lead a Dev team, but Shatner's never done anything more technological than shout "Phasers on stun!" Geekvantage: Wheaton.
Wheaton posts on Slashdot. Unless Shatner lurks, I seriously doubt he's reading this. Geekvantage: Wheaton.
Wheaton hosted Arena and guest-hosted The Screen Savers. Shatner hosted Iron Chef. Geekvantage: Wheaton.
Wheaton plays D&D, Illuminati, Grand Theft Auto, and collects vintage Atari 2600 games. Shatner did William Shatner's Splat Attack. Shatner's involvement in gaming consists of doing voices for Star Trek games and cashing the check. Check out his filmography and search for "VG". Geekvantage: Wheaton.
Final Summation: Wheaton
OK, I'll grant you that Wil's no Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman, or Steve Wozniak, but he's no newbie either. I'd stack him up next to Neal Stevenson or Bruce Sterling on geek points. And if you wanted to put someone on Crossfire to represent geek culture as a whole, who better?
Finally, here's Wil Wheaton's geek code, pulled off his web site. You be the judge.
-
Re:This book is irrelevant, it will be assimilated
That'll teach me to skim reviews. Also provides a reminder that there are more than two online booksellers on the planet. D'oh. Interestingly, the entire library section of Wheaton's blog site links to Amazon, and the books in "What I'm Currently Reading" and "Essential Computer and Geek Books" are...intruiguing.

Re:What a comeback
I'm surprised that Wil hasn't been on "Where Are They Now?" on VH1.
He may as well have been. He was on a similar show on ABC, "Our Favorite Stars, Then and Now," recently (May 8 I believe). He mentions it in his May 8 entry on his site. -
Why hasn't he posted yet?

Ask Wil Wheaton about G4
q.v. http://slashdot.org/~CleverNickName/journal/20695
I used to put G4 on in the background quite often while I was working. The commercials, being mostly about games, were at least less annoying than commercials for cars or tampons. I like to hear people talking when I'm doing chores, so that's why TV instead of music.
Anyway, after some exposure to the channel, I found Arena. I would actually sit and watch this show because A) Wil was on it and B) I thought the idea of the competition was cool. For those unfamiliar, Arena was a computer and console game competition between two teams of four. (theoretically, anyway, see Wil's journal)
Then Wil wasn't on anymore. I thought, "Oh maybe he's doing a movie or something and that's why they put these two pretty boys on the show." Then I read the above /. journal by Wil. I have not put on G4 even once since then.
Message to G4: Wil Wheaton has a posse!

Ruined by fandom, restored by the Internet
Heh. I've got 3 or so seasons (accounting for 4 years of my childhood and about 10 more years as an adult) that were ruined by fandom.
Strangely, the Internet was instrumental in restoring much of the joy that went with those years. -

Re:Other similar poker books
I'll just add a couple cool gambling books to the list:
*Bringing Down the House
*Poker Nation
*Telling Lies and Getting Paid
If you wanna learn how to play:
*Doyle Brunson's Super/System
*Mike Caro's Poker Tells
*Hold 'Em Poker for Advanced Players
And of course, make sure you watch Rounders and The Sting. ;) -
Re:Overated
This is not about the people in Europe.
You are right, its about the people of the world
It's about US national security.
Which nobody belives. (Well you perhaps ;)
I'm sure most Europeans see us all as a bunch of cowboy rednecks,
I'm sure alot used to do that once, but with the advent of the internet, they've learned that you are a diverse bunch, some quite sensible.
fighting Iraq for oil
The US is using 25% of the worlds oil! When you get nervous you seem to build bigger and more slothfull cars (SUV anyone) - few believe that Oil doesn't play some a part of this.
The United States governemtn is doing what they feel is in the best interest of their national security.
Perhaps (or perhaps not) - but then you could say the same about Saddam.
And, despite what all these America-haters out there think, in a number of these cases the US government has sent troops to help (Kosovo? Kuwait?)
And that is the dangerous mindset "all thse america-haters" - just nuke the lot, we'll be a lot safer then.
And I guarantee that no honest government is going to sit by and let their country be threatened, regardless of world opinion.
If everybody tells you you are nuts, perhaps you should start to listen to them instead of the voices in your head.
Except maybe the French :)
Oh i don't know, they were threatend by a rogue nation with weapons of mass destruction, and they stuck to their guns - sounds rather brave to me. -
Re:Greasy hacker? Nah..

I wonder who these key bloggers areOne guess: Wil Wheaton
:)Ok. It's not him, but here's an idea. There seems to be a list of teen bloggers at blogcontrol.theweblogreview.com. We can select teen as the category and monitor daily for mentions of Mad Cow or whatever it is they call it. At the first mention, the blog gets DOSd and the influential teen learns a lesson about the dangers of selling out (or at least learns to sell out for good money, not carbonated cow juice)
Oh, and doing a search for Teen Bloggers on google isn't as scary as I thought.
