I've got an older 750N, works like a champ, cost $1400 - the toner cartridges are a bit pricey (250 each) but they last a pretty good while. Has linux support, internet printing etc.

I solved this problem a couple years ago when I was working on a problem with fraudulent mass account signups at idrive.com. I display a warped image of random characters and requested that the user enter those characters in a text entry box on the signup page. (Yes, now you see that everywhere, but we did it first; Yahoo was next, a couple months later, then PayPal.) Now it has grown into a whole field called CAPTCHAs. I called it our "Turing test".

We have a Tektronix Phaser 850 color printer - one of the fancy ones that takes blocks of solid, colored wax, and melts them down for ink.

We started getting a warning a few months back about "Change maintenance kit"... but the kit life is SUPPOSED to be ten thousand pages, and we've only done about 5000 on it since we installed it.

Turns out it's "10000 or one year" - which isn't mentioned on the status pages anywhere, and this little dinky maintenance kit that consists of a plastic tray, roller, and squeegee blade also has a little chip in a housing at the front of it, that locks in what time it was first installed.

If you try to roll the printer clock back, the date the tray was installed rolls back too. Clever buggers.

So now, we have this damned annoying error message that the sales droids keep forgetting isn't that important, and keep warning us about.

Oh, and how much for this cheap plastic tray, roller and squeegee (and completely unnecessary chip)? $90 US. Criminal.

I don't think that Xerox Parc as we knew it exists any more. It seems to have been spun off and privatized - a move that takes it out of research. A scan of web pages for the researchers also seems to indicate that many have moved on at about the same time.

If this is part of a general trend across the U.S. to ditch research, then there will be a very, very high economic price to pay when the current cycle of research/development/production finishes.

Or given the trend in the media and even some pulications to replace logic with rhetoric and replace fact with opinion, it could be part of a larger anti-intellectual movement, albeit a kinder, gentler one that the sort envisioned by Pol Pot, Mao and others.

Yes, they talked about the 3M computer: 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels on the screen and 1000 bytes of RAM, with a graphical interface and a mouse.

The Alto was the first computer that met that design goal.

That same year, Xerox came out with the first laser printer and an ethernet network that connected the printer and workstations. The original network ran at 3Mbps.

Electric cars have come and gone through the decades, common in early 20th century. Went out with the Model T and made a comeback in WW2 time, along with wood burning cars, coal burners and the like.
Then GM introduces this one and then take it back out again

It's because of the close proximity of three very developed sources of technological innnovation, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and Xerox Parc. Not to mention all of the other tech companies that have sprung up to support YOUR up and coming tech business. It's becuase it is a center for technological innovation, and the culture there is "supposed" to foster that. Whether it does now or not is another story.

Speaking as a resident of California, I can say that a lot of the residents choose to have their tax rates so high becuase they choose to protect the environment with those taxes. California has ALWAYS led the nation in progessive environmental legislation. If you've ever been here and seen some of the beautiful landscapes and natural sites we have, you'll understand. Politicians here fight tooth and nail to prove to the voters who is the more environmetally counsious without wasting tax resources. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things wrong with California, but to be honest I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, and I've been a few places in my time. The weather and the beauty is a BIG draw for people moving to California. It always has been and it always will be as long as we protect it.

AOL was not the first company to deploy an instant messaging service that was availible internet wide, ICQ was and that is where the whole cyber-sex thing started. It was easy to find a partner via ICQ and it's random "Men Seeking Women" (etc...) friend finder was a god-sent to helpless, love-sick nerds everywhere (all-be-it porly sorted and managed). Simply put, AOL took an existing technology, put a family friendly coat of make-up on it and a "I don't like those dirty bad nasty words" fuction and called it good for a mere ~$23. Once again we've seen a monopoly take an existing technology, made it friendly, then made it availible. The only step that they're missing from various other monopolies is making it cheap. The last thing most of us will ever dream of seeing is an AOL user switching over to a better, faster connection.

I remembered reading something about this; dataglyphs use slashes to encode data to present a grey background to a page, if you don't look too closely. I quote: "At 600dpi, DataGlyphs can offer up to 1KB per square inch of data." If you want, you can encode less densely, and make it faxable. This strikes me as a cool way to avoid hardware obsolescence, which I worry about.

WIMP - Window(*1) Icon Mouse(*2) Pointer was first coined by Parc Xerox early in 1970, this was well before Microsoft even existed.

(*1) Windows initially refered the concept we now know as a virtual or floating desktop. i.e. A 'window' on a larger space.
(*2) 'Mouse' changed to 'Menu' as a result of the text mode UI's that where introduced in the 1980's.

Poor Apple, it isn't like they ever stole a GUI.

As an ex-system programmer I very well know that lots of that damn kernel crap inside Windows were purely and simply OS/2 core components...

Perhaps you should contact IBM's lawyers and let them know. Oh wait, OS/2 was a joint project between Microsoft and IBM created AFTER windows 1 was developed. It is not uncommon for a company to develop multiple similiar projects in tandem

Windows 1 predates OS/2 1 and it wans't until 1994 that IBM made a push for OS/2. Like many others, they were late to the party and lost.

If I want to call a product crap, I will call it crap and IMHO Windows Commander is crap. I wouldn't use it at home and I wouldn't allow it on my network in the office.

Never use the word "xeroxing" in front of an attorney. It's a misuse of Xerox's trademark. Say "making copies" or "photocopying" instead. The "Xerox" mark, like other trademarks, is an adjective and should be used with a generic term: a "Xerox machine" or a "Xerox copier". But anyway, what gives you the idea that four out of five attorneys use Xerox copiers rather than Canon or Sharp copiers?

I started a small document scanning service a few years ago. (I am no longer in that business). The biggest issue in OCR accuracy is pre-process. (in particular de-skew and grayscale removal). If the page is skewed even a couple of degrees OCR will fail miserably. I have had superb results using TMSSequoia Scanfix software which automatically cleans-up and straightens the page nicely. Its expensive but worth-it if you have a lot to scan. I believe that they still have a demo available.

My experience has been that the consumer OCR software is considerably MORE accurate than industrial versions that cost 20X as much. I obtained excellent OCR accuracy using Scansoft's Textbridge software which utilized the Xerox Textbridge engine. Scansoft appears to have purchased Omnipage OCR and discontinued the Textbridge OCR line. I found that I achieved much higher accuracy with Textbridge then with Omnipage after the document was processed by Scanfix. Textbridge did not have some of the features of Omnipage but Textbridge was faster and better at OCR. I would definately download the Textbridge 98 demo that is still floating around on the web.

Both Textbridge and Omnipage OCR were vastly superior to anything else I previewed, including Adobe's OCR engine. OCR can be surprisingly accurate but the source image needs to be free of distortion. Sometimes you will need to break up the page into several using photo-editing software since no OCR can inteterpret the structure of a document very well.

I suspect that you will be better off just typing in the mathematics in by hand. Maybe a visual LATEX editor like Scientific Workplace would be helpful. The LATEX output could be manipulated using a parser to put the equations into the simpler forms that you need while keeping the raw equation in a form that could be used for other purposes later on.

Honesty, 10pgs/hour is pretty good so it doesn't sound like you are doing all that much touch-up. I suspect that using Scanfix will provide the greatest boost in productivity.

Could it be that the real reason Simonyi wants away from Microsoft is that he's interested in aspect-oriented programming? And the language that's getting the buzz in aspect-oriented programming is AspectJ, where J stands for Java? And promoting Java would be a career-limiting move at Microsoft for anyone these days?

For the 860: '2 cyan + 1 black Free' prints 2,800 pages, and costs $92.

For the 8200, '2 cyan' prints 2,800 pages and costs $80.

I've looked at other printers they've got for sale as well. Their Phaser 1235 is $2,700, but the black toner ends up only costing $0.0097/page. It would take some time to make up the printer's cost, but it would be a good deal if I get a refub. In any event, I've requested additional information from Xerox and might end up buying one of those three printers. So, I appreciate the information, but the 'Free Black Ink' deal continues to look like snake-oil to me.
