Unless the Trump administration is seeking increased NASA funding for this fiscal year, you can just ignore anything they say about space.
Normally I'd agree, but in this case I'm cautiously optimistic, if only because VP Pence seems to be a genuine NASA fanboi... he was nine years old for Apollo 11, and asked for a seat on the space sub-committee when he was elected to Congress. Pence was apparently the driving force behind Trump's decision to reconstitute the National Space Council which met yesterday for the first time.
Given the amount of disruptive innovation in the space industry lately (led by but not limited to SpaceX), now is a particularly opportune time to "innovate" on the policy side as well. Will the new NSC ever amount to anything more than a few high-profile meetings? Hard to say... As you rightly point out: No bucks, no Buck Rogers. But when a handful of billionaires like Musk, Bezos, and Bigelow are investing their own cash to bring new capabilities to the market, you really couldn't ask for a better time for government to get on the bandwagon too.

a nice constant
Been on here since 99 or so, when i got my first tech job and slashdot was set as the homepage from my predecessor. Haven't stopped reading since.
Sure i play around with reddit, but their moderation system, shadowbans, and the fact that each subreddit only has a handful (if that) of moderators keeps me coming back here. There is far too much groupthink on any other aggregator with comments that I have tried, and the quality of comments on slashdot is always top notch. The AC system is also a rare delight in the new world order of disquis forums and such.
So keep on keeping on slashdot! Even fatboy slim had a song about you back in the day! linky
My personal favourite article from recent memory was the one about peoples favourite sci-fi films. Which I keep mining for new gems to watch on a friday night.

Xmax is 11mm +/-, that's some pretty serious distance. Given the amount of DSP built into it, of course they're actively controlling the drivers to minimize distortion.
In a well-tuned cabinet, with high-quality drivers and DSP, I bet they can hit 50Hz flat, no problem at all, and probably as low as 40Hz at a decent SPL. Odds are they're boosting the hell out of the low bass at lower volumes and gradually rolling it off as you increase the volume, keeping the low frequencies always right up there close to the limits of what the amps and drivers can do. Bose does the same thing on their portable speakers, and it is rather convincing, though the sound does become somewhat leaner at high volume levels. It's simply a modern version of the loudness button on old-school amps, but more advanced.
I bet they're also using clever DSP tricks, including missing fundamentals, to increase the perceived amount of bass. The Boomcloud Boomstick (love that name) is an inexpensive device that does some of these things. I've researched this a little bit, since I'm building a DIY bluetooth speaker, and I'm interested in making it not sound tinny and lacking in bass (especially outside), despite using a small cabinet and relative small drivers. The next best thing to actual deep bass is a convincing illusion of deep bass. I see absolutely no reason why Google wouldn't be using similar tricks.

As I understand, "weak" AI would be an AI (the real deal) that is as intelligent as a human.
Nope. Weak AI is literally any sort of decision made by a computer. Liiiiiike, the sad little goomba in Super Mario that reverses direction when he hits a ledge. That's "weak AI". Or "soft AI". The threshold is REALLY low for qualifying as weak AI. But it's also includes impressive stuff like voice recognition, chess programs, and self-driving cars. Anything that limits the task to a specific function and puts a boundary of what the AI has to deal with is weak AI.
The alternative is "strong" or "Hard" AI, otherwise known as Artificial general intelligence, which can solve all problems. The same hardware/software/whatnot could be thrown at any problem, from voice recognition, to driving a car, to figuring out when a goomba should reverse directions, and it could solve each of those.
To have a computer be "as intelligent as a human" it's generally accepted that we'd need strong AI.
That said... how fast can you multiply 2356246246 X 9831716? Because I'm pretty sure a $0.50 computer can beat you. So in that aspect, it's MORE intelligent than you. And so the question comes down to how do we measure intelligence. And the answer is "Badly".
It's REALLY not a race between AI and human intelligence. The two things are orthogonal. They just work differently. Right now there's a set of problems that computers are HELLA better than people at, and there's a set or problems that computers have troubles with. Typically where it takes intuition, creativity, or "lateral thinking". But computers are edging out humans at certain tasks we used to beat them at.
Artificial General Intelligence doesn't exist yet. They've been trying since the 70's. But it's a really hard problem. Super hard. It's sci-fi at this point.

What's the goal of the Google search engine? hmm? It's fun to personify it but at the end of the day it's goal is what Google corporate tells it it's goal is. And it's goal is to find me pictures of cats on the Internet.
Even if we make an AGI some day, it's going to have the goals that it's programmed with. There isn't going to be any sort of magical "awakening". Hollywood has ruined so many people's idea of what is and isn't AI. It's pretty terrible.
A computer would do anything it has to, to satisfy achieving its goals.
So would a corporation. Typically their goal is to make money. They've got a LOOOONG history of doing anything to achieve that. So far, there's mixed results, but overall they're probably a good idea.
