The New York Times and the narrative:
It was a shock on arriving at the New York Times in 2004, as the paper's movie editor, to realize that its editorial dynamic was essentially the reverse. By and large, talented reporters scrambled to match stories with what internally was often called "the narrative." We were occasionally asked to map a narrative for our various beats a year in advance, square the plan with editors, then generate stories that fit the pre-designated line.

Not just americans ...
I've got two spoof accounts on Facebook, one for work - we're an agency selling Social Media Marketing among other things,so it's more or less expected of me - and one I established roughly 7 years ago when i started social dancing and constantly meeting people who asked me if I was on Facebook. I looked at Twitter a few months after it came out, thought "wtf?" after 3 minutes and have used it since maybe 4 times or so. No inroads at all with instagram, whatscrap and other data hogs.
Long story short, even though I'm your Type A 80ies computerkid who has never had less than 5 email accounts in the last 2 decades and who was on Fidonet back in the day posting every day, I see a significant difference between me and many many other people. Today *I* am the one who's more away from electronic media than the average - a thing quite unthinkable back in the 90ies. Even though I haven't changed my habits that much.
Facebook I consider particularly evil, as it is a funnel of constant superficial vanity-induced anti-social behaviour that, as far as I can tell, has a significant impact on the general social skills of people growing up with it. Facebook here being a synonym for anything "social" media these days. A fascinating look into someone from this social media native generation is Essena O'Neills account on why she quit her life as an instagram "professional". Yes, you can shake your head in disbelief about the naivity and the obviousness of what she finally realised, but don't forget: these are people who grew up with this - they never knew anyhting else - which makes her account ever more honest, poignant and impressive.
Conclusion:
I see the signs left, right and center: Social media has a significant negative impact on the general publics mental health. To put it in other words: FB is not a social network, it's basically a global mental illness. My 2 cents.

Re:Only Tech?
Corporate media puts out a steady drumbeat of 5 minute hate articles nowadays to control the Overton Window. I'm surprised it didn't turn out even more negative than that.

Idiocracy
the vast majority of the tablet/phone purchasing world has no clue what you mean by that statement. They. Don't. Care.
That's exactly right. And because these devices are designed down to the level of the ignorant, rather than uplifting them, they don't have to learn. And those of us who could use these devices to a much greater extent remain reined in by this pandering to market. Subfolders are too complicated, the apologists tell us. There's no saving people too stupid to learn what a subfolder is/does. But those who are simply ignorant can learn in seconds. The insistence that this is "too much" is utterly pitiful to hear.
In the end, dumbing everything down is the surest way to the market consisting of the broadest portion of the Gaussian, and therefore, their money. That's why this is happening.
Time to watch the intro to Idiocracy again to remind ourselves why pandering to the lowest common denominator is a really, really bad idea.

Needs confirmation
I'm fine with NASA's manned flights taking more risk to accomplish more and sooner, but it seems like the Dragon capsule is the "safer risk" given it's inherent safety mechanisms.
It's not entirely clear to me why you think Dragon has more "inherent" safety, other than the statements by the manufacturer that their designs are "inherently" safe. I will point out that they also stated that their Falcon-1 design was 99.9% reliable before its first launch because it had reliability designed in.
Dragon has a heat shield designed for orbital reentry. Orion is designed for planetary-return thermal loads, which are about twice as high for lunar missions, and significantly greater than that for Mars. Heat shields are non-trivial; you can't just say "no problem, we'll use this in an environment with twice the energy."

Re:motivation
"Another manager threatened to beat an underperforming employee's head in with a baseball bat."
Now, that's what must be a highly motivating work environment
:/One must wonder how their hiring process works, i.e. letting such characters through the gates, since recent reports don't paint a pretty picture.
That sounds like the sort of thing where someone is quoting Bon Qui Qui (Mad TV; https://www.youtube.com/watch?...) and says, "I will cut you!" or something, and the receiving end takes it as a threat.
Granted: The first rule of public speaking (or just about any kind of presentation) is to Know Your Audience. KYA. Applies to everything. You shouldn't tell jokes to people who may not get them, or may take offense at them...unless you're a stand-up comic. KYA. But that sort of professionalism isn't taught at any MBA school, and we have an entire generation or two of managers who are missing fundamental characteristics of leadership.

I think its time we hack space travel.
I've been working on putting structure to MIT's OCW courses and filling in the blanks where there's missing courses. If we all tried to just go through what is available out there now and focussed on propulsion, life support systems, systems engineering, etc, I think we could get ourselves off the planet and mining asteroids to build craft that could get to this system without having our work belong to any organizations that could keep it to themselves. I know that's quite collectivist for a capitalist, but I believe that math/basic science shouldn't be patentable, and the only way to do this is to race against those who intend to patent everything. I put my thoughts up on Hive13's wiki and moved them to http://hackereducation.wordpre... I am not a professor and I only had 2 years as a college software system architect, so my understanding of curriculum development may need help, but it doesn't matter if the idea grows into something better. We have a way to use sunlight to fuse glass https://www.youtube.com/watch?... and probably could use these: http://www.growbiointensive.or... guys' ideas to grow food. No idea since I'm a physics/cs guy and not a biologist or doctor. I just wish we'd stop waiting for the government to do everything for us and use the damned hand rectangles that contain all of human knowledge to learn ourselves and then go do it!

Re: Yup
Your obsession with what colour (slavery is wrong whatever colour), and baseless insults on education and "worldview" appear irrelevant, and disappointing IMHO.
My original post was a response to this AC.
Yes, we know. And you regurgitated a litany of falsehoods and misconceptions, while purporting to being engaged in education.
No sir, you miseducated.
...Talking about the Founding Fathers.
"Irrelevant" and "baseless"?
I think not.
Of course you are free to disagree. That's one of the freedoms we enjoy because of those so-called "hypocrites" the AC referred to.
No, not really. For example, one of those hypocrites, John Adams, was responsible for the Alien and Sedition Acts. The Dred Scott decision cited many of them to justify declaring that blacks were not citizens under the Constitution.
It's not because of them. It's despite them.
They should not be worshiped, nor their works. If you wish to esteem them for their virtues, you must also condemn them for their faults.
And it was not actually an insult, unless you personally consider pointing out factual errors leading to an erroneous and/or skewed worldview an insult.
Well, you do. Here's your response to being chastised on your errors: And calling me a liar? You can go fuck yourself.
I thought I was actually being informative, and from my original post's score it seems the moderators agree.
All that means is random people who have made no demonstration of their substantial analysis of your words, can click a button.
People who have looked at them, have rebutted them quite firmly, you have made errors as to facts, dates, and events in plenty. Only one of your errors have you admitted to, which is a step forward, but you have numerous more to address.
You lied. You lied while pretentiously claiming that others should educate themselves. Teacher, I say, first teach thyself!
Here, I suggest you watch something besides Glenn Beck: Emmett Till.

Re:The real question is
HP fail: compare your product to something that no competitor should be worse than by far.
This is like how- in the United Kingdom at least- Duracell are still selling their (alkaline) batteries by comparing them against zinc batteries. (#) I mean, really?
That might have been valid thirty years ago when alkalines were semi-premium and zinc carbons *were* the competition, but nowadays zincs are relegated to the dirt-cheap-but-underpowered-for-most-real-uses market segment. Alkalines are mainstream and I can get four or six of them for a quid from Poundland.
How do your batteries compare against those? Twenty percent more capacity for two and a half times the price or something? Doesn't sound so good... but then, neither does relying on comparisons to an archaic technology to make yourselves look better.
(#) This advert is three years old, but I'm sure I saw a similar one less than a year ago. -

Re:Bullshit isn't the same as "lie".
As someone else said, lies are pretty easy to detect but you have to go find sources. It is amazing how media today does not provide actual sources, but layers of links to other sites repeating the same lie they themselves repeat. It is very time consuming to find actual truths, but I find it necessary today. Media has become masterful, sadly, at removing context to create a narrative based on a sliver of truth. Unfortunately, that is not the only way they lie (see below).
You are right that good bullshit appeals to emotion, but it's not quite as simple usually as reading an appeal to emotion fallacy. I think the telling thing is how people react when you suggest that people look for full sets of facts or provide a contrary opinions/conclusions. The hostility, especially from the left today, should set off people's bullshit meters.
This is an education video on how the media lies. This is also true of Politicians, just to be clear. A funny note here is that Sargon is a left of a true Liberal. I disagree with him at an intellectual level, but we could debate the disagreements. The leftists however, tend to hate him and slander him. "Dangerous thoughts" and all that.

Re:Reviving acient microorganisms...
It appears Hollywood may have also essentially done a remake set on the ISS in "Life" due out next month, complete with a 155 second Youtube trailer that seems to pretty much give the entire plot away. As if that's not bad enough, it's entirely possible there may also be some kind of message about the current political situation regarding illegal aliens in there too just for good measure, but at least it looks pretty...

Re:So what?
If you're interested, most people would agree that when you connect to a defcon wifi network you should probably be... cautious. Let's face it, Defcon is to RSA from an info-risk pov as walking in downtown NY at 1am is to walking around the North/South Korean DMZ at 1am. Both are hazardous, but one of them is just plain insane.
