Re:They're holding out
Does that mean they'll take away your tin-foil hat as well?
Tin foil is for amateurs, I use MindGuard!
In all seriousness, however, the problem is that the current systems, whether you are talking about cable, satellite, or worst of all broadcast television, can all be tapped quite easily. And once they can be tapped skipping commercials and sharing become ridiculously easy. Microsoft's solution to this problem is replacing these open standards and networks with their own proprietary closed system. It's attractive to Hollywood because it is the only system that is likely to actually have any chance of being accepted by consumers, and it would almost certainly be well beyond the average person's ability to "hack." Even better the DMCA should make people attempting to break the system into criminals.
Of course, this isn't going to happen. If Hollywood is stupid enough to put Microsoft in that sort of a position of power then they enjoying the raping that they would get once this system became widespread. Making Microsoft the cornerstone of your business is like putting a cannibal in charge of babysitting your children.
In other words, I don't think that this is going to work, but you can bet that Microsoft thinks it is going to work.

Re:Tin-foil hats all round
Googling makes it look more like 95-97% reflectivity for aluminum foil, so you'd absorb more like 300J. It'll also be distributed over the surface, not the volume of your head, so your standard 36g tinfoil hat would get nearly 10K hotter... a few dozen blasts of that could get painful!

Nooo! It's too late for you!
Nooooooooo! You poor fewel, it's already too late for you! They weren't trying to slip you a DRM warez "mickey". The damage was in the music you listened too. It was infested with high frequency subliminal badness designed by the unholy union of the RIAA/M$/Liberati/Aliens with anal probing devices and you have now been hipnotized to ignore the presence of the level twelve watcher spiders that are presently infesting your domicile and reporting back to them! You're doomed unless you go to this website immediately! Post haste my friend!

I can imagine it now: Mass narcolepsy at American airports as NASA implements its plan to scan brain waves.
Avoid the rush: Get your aluminum foil deflector beanie now!

Re:Why NASA?
Anyways, shouldn't the FBI, CIA or NSA develop this?
They already have, beware!
Though thankfully as a Linux user, I have protection.
And yes I did intend this post as a joke :) -

A note about tinfoil hats
It can't be stressed enough how important it is to have the shiny side pointing out. This is needed because the shiny side is most reflective to psychotronic radiation, while the dull side can actually, in certain environmental conditions, absorb it.
However, it is also wise to complement this with a layer of foil pointing shiny side in. This will keep your brain waves, which are also reflected by the shiny side, from being picked up by mind-reading equipment.
There is a small number of aluminum foil researchers who believe that this may cause an alpha-wave harmonic to build up in the skull resulting in memory loss or pseudo- religious visions, but their findings have never been replicated by the aluminum foil research community at large. Even if their findings are validated, the risk involved is small compared to the potential of mind-intrusion.

(GASP)! War with Canada! :-)
Ha! The article gives it all away! This isn't about some sort of scientific research! This is just the first field-test of the latest insidious high-tech military hardware...on the innocent people of Canada!
It's plain to me that the US has developed a highly sophisticated Neutrino Ray Cannon(tm) that can be fired THROUGH THE EARTH and still hit targets in other countries! The article plainly describes that the beam will be fired through the earth, past the detectors, and INTO CANADA. Naturally, the US has chosen a nearby country to test it on, so that the results can be assessed quickly.
I'm willing to bet it'll be a successful test, too. Being a Neutrino-based Ray Gun(tm), we'll know it works if the characteristic effects of Neutrino Bombardment (that is to say, "Nothing") are seen among the Canadian populace after the test! Previous tests were less successful, though they are rumored to have caused speech alterations described as a very mild form of Tourette's Syndrome, wherein the victims add an extra syllable (described as "Eh") to their sentences...though one heavily affected region is rumored to have had their language altered so severely that they now speak FRENCH instead of Canadian! [Probably just a rumor, I don't believe it myself. Nor do I believe the rumors that the US Government experimented on its own citizens similarly, resulting in the "y'know" at the end of victim's sentences, and inability to spell "lose" with less than 2 "O's" in it.]
In the interests of World Peace(tm), I feel compelled to warn the People of Canada now - PROTECT YOURSELF WITH ALUMINUM FOIL DEFLECTOR BEANIES NOW! Before it's TOO LATE!

Be sure to try out wmzcalock
The author of the linked article has written wmzcalock, a nifty little dockapp (for Window Maker / Afterstep / Blackbox fans) that can display time in metric units. It's
.01536 as I write this!
Metric time is a very nice idea. You divide the day up into 100,000 seconds (instead of 86,400); 100 "seconds" is a "minute," and 10,000 "seconds" is an "hour." (Alternately, you can have 1,000-"second" "hours"---it depends on whether you want your day to have 10 "hours" or 100.) You can imagine a digital wall clock for this time standard as simply three or five digits counting up, i.e. the decimal part of the day (hence "015" or "01536" for approximately 12:22am).
As for the silly remarks about a 100-day year, a metric time system would only be relevant in the division of a single day, as natural events pretty much dictate the larger time periods. A 10-month year is conceivable, though I think a better case could be made for a 12- or 13-month calendar (either with identical months and 1-5 extra days not belonging to any month), in light of the lunar orbit.
(Our current calendar, IMHO, needs reform more than our current system of timekeeping. Exhibit A: that weirdass formula you need to use to compute the day of the week for an arbitrary date) -

Re:Tinfoil Hats
A) Your linkage is bad, you mean to go http://zapatopi.net/afdb.html
B) The real link to the zapatopi page returned this message to me: "Service Temporarily Unavailable The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."
C) The link in question is also on the bottom of the main story page (ie, the Tinfoil Hat Linux).
D) The site at zapatopi has a discussion about Tin vs. Aluminum as well as which direction you should point the shinny side. -
Re:Hoaxhere si the site for those that may not get to it...
What is Tinfoil Hat linux ? It started as a secure, single floppy, bootable Linux distribution for storing PGP keys and then encrypting, signing and wiping files. At some point it became an exercise in over-engineering.
Tinfoil hat is useful if:- You're using a computer that could have a keystroke logger installed. http://www.keyghost.com is an example of a tiny & cheap hardware logger.
- You need to use your personal GPG keys at work, school or a web hosting facility where you don't trust or own the equipment.
- If you maintain a PGP Certificate Authority or signing key and have to have a safe place to use the CA key.
- If you simply don't want to risk putting a PGP key on a hard drive where someone else might have access to it.
- The Illuminati are watching your computer, and you need to use morse code to blink out your PGP messages on the numlock key.
- readme.txt, also on the floppy image
- The source code for files on the floppy
- The tinfoilhat linux floppy image plus disk signature file Transfer this image to disk using rawrite (on windows) , dd on unix (dd if=tinfoil.img of=/dev/floppy ), or Diskcopy on a MAC.
- Q: Why doesn't the floppy I got at codecon match the signature above?
A: because I screwed up & wrote a nvram.md5 file to the floppy I then used as a master. I had to remove that file from every floppy. The result is that the MD5sum of the codecon floppies should be: 3608290765de7d5283a1a22813677a56 - Q: How do I undo that horrible screen in paranoid mode?
A: Type "contrast" at the command prompt, or play with ctheme. - Q: Is this really a 1.0 stable release?
A: Think of this as a linux kernel 1.0 . Yes, it's stable to the best of my ability, and has been tested, but not for very long or by many people. - Q: What sort of hardware is required to run tinfoil hat?
A: Any 386DX or faster IBM compatible with more than 8 megs of RAM. Pretty much any PC made in the last 8 years will work fine. - Q: where do I send complaints, bugs & feature requests?
A: anonymous AT nameless DOT cultists.net - Q: What is the license for this distribution?
A: The scripts, documentation, and the distribution as a collection are released under a modified BSD license. Obviously, other people's software in this distribution retain their original licenses.

Where Do You Get Your Data?
43% of Canadians support Québec separating? It'll be a cold day in hell before support reaches that level. And within Québec, it's LESS THAN HALF, otherwise they would have separated by now, since it's still a democratic country. Sure, it was a small margin last referendum, but still a greater margin than some people take to win. Interestingly, in the same way that Al Gore lost the US presidency, the current Québec provincial government won the last election due to the electoral system, even though they did not receive the most votes.
I imagine if you're all for Québec's right to self-determination, you're also supportive of the separation of the Second Republic of Texas, of Alaskan Nationhood, the restoration of the Sovereign Kingdom of Hawaii, the California Republic, Puerto Rican independence, and the formation of Cascadia from what's left of the United States of America. -
Contrary to Popular BeliefSee the World Health Organizations's site on International EMF Project
From the Factsheet No. 263, Oct 2001
"ELF fields commonly found in our environment are normally much lower than the strongest electric currents naturally occurring in the body such as those that control the beating of the heart"
AND"ELF magnetic fields were classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans based on epidemiological studies of childhood leukaemia."
<opinion> Contrary to (un)popular belief, the strength of EMF required to do *any* harm to living tissue is not a matter of debate, you'd have to practically sleep with a power-pole in your ass and a cell-site antenna in your head to even *think* of having a chance of getting cancer. Frequency, power-at-distance, and exposure time/period are the factors to consider in any such study of biological effects. In other news... pseudo-sciencists around the world suggest you get Mind-Guard (TM) if you don't want those government mind-control rays.</opinion> =P -

Re:Are YOU working for the government? You are a tool of the global conspiracy Like the so-called "moon landing" (which was actually filmed in an underground film studio off the coast of Switzerland) the WTC buildings never actually existed. They are actually a complex optical illusion engineered by Donald Trump - the original Trump, not the shallow cloned imposter running around Manhatten these days - to mask the entrance to his secret underground laboratory. Tunnels from this lab complex extend throughout the tri-state area, and escapees from the Donald's experimental psych wards are unceremoniously hustled off to the state hospital at Matawan.
For me to reveal any more, you'll need one of these.

When will they approve the MGPL?I don't know why more people don't use the MindGuard Public License (as used with MindGuard). An excerpt:
A "work based on the Program" hereinafter means either the Program itself or a work containing a portion or the totality of the Program either with or without modifications, translations, transliterations, or transformations. (Hereinafter, the term "modification" shall include, without limitations, the last four terms of the previous sentence excluding the term "or" unless "or" is used to refer to a boolean function applied to modify the Program or any part of it.) Each licensee is addressed as "you", as in the statement "You are a licensee". (The statement "You are not a licensee" will hereinafter have no logical meaning.)

What are you all talking about?
The whole point of college to do all the things that you can't do in Real Life. Going on 72 hour drinking binges, waving "save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus" placards, and most of all, screwing like a rabid weasel on heat. That's what it's always been about, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't been, doesn't remember, or has a personality short circuit (and is probably wearing sandals and a knitted waistcoat).
This isn't a frivilous post, I just take a dim view of being condemned for "wasting" a college education. Let's see, I was such a wasted slacker at college that I barely passed the exams, but scamming my professors stood me in good stead for scamming my employers until I actually learned some useful skills. You can't be taught those kind of "life skills". Now, here I am ten years later, with the degree I wanted, a good job, the academia that I couldn't regurgitate on demand in an exam is actually coming back to me, and I have absolutely no regrets over missed opportunities.
You get one chance at life. Working your nuts off at college will get you a better degree and an early start on your career, but you have the rest of your life to work on your career, which is coincidentally the same amount of time you have to regret your missed opportunities. Ten years after graduating, your career will probably be the same either way, but one way you have pleasant memories of drunken orgies with hot chicks, and the other you have a lot of memories of hunching over a book.
College is about improvement. To my mind, hedonism is a goal, not something to be frowned on. We always hope that our children will have more than we had: I sincerely hope that I can provide my kids an opportunity to spend four years naked, vomiting and not giving a damn.

Re:Love Big Brother?
- someday it might even be used to make tiny robots that would lodge in people's brains and make them truly love Big Brother.
I wonder if that means that beer already contains microscopic black helicopers, because beer (and inbreeding) are the only explanations for it's popularity right now, and I'd hate to think that I could get that drunk.

MGPLI can't believe they forgot the MindGuard Public License! More software ought to use this license. Excerpt:

Re:Department of Defense getting in on the fun?
From past experience with persons of your particular mindset I know that you probably aren't interested in hearing about all the possible mundane explanations for this phenomenon. No doubt, you've had Occam's Razor explained you a dozen times already, and yet you still prefer not to apply it. So rather than torture myself by trying to talk you in to a more reasonable frame of mind, I'll just give up right now and pretend that you're being perfectly sensible. In fact, I'll provide you with some fascinating information on advanced technologies that can be used to thwart government spies. Hope that helps.

Yet one more reason to procure an aluminum foil deflector beanie; when the aliens, thinking they're helping, begin transmitting quantum-encrypted mind control beams to counteract those of the military-industrial complex, if we don't have adequate protection we'll all go into convulsions, frothing at the mouth as our brains are overwhelmed by gibberish instructions. Protect yourselfWell, some people are going to start marketing special suits to protect themselves. I do not, however, recommend this example made from aluminum foil. (check out the poor dog!)
There is this very legit product from ShieldWorks. Check out their catalog
And there is the world famous Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie
It of course depends on what is the most important body part to protect as far as you are concerned. These mostly focus on protecting the brain. (Not that is is being overused by some folks)
Other people may want to investigate protection for other body parts.
There is a business plan in here someplace folks.
