Fanimatrix - The Matrix Re-done By Fans

Release date is 27th September. " From the trailer, the movie actually looks good!
The Fanimatrix? Almost sounds like Fannymatrix.. or the next porno spoof of a big motion picture :)
How can someone not include a QT format? They got every other flavor.
Also, aren't they infringing on WB's copyright?

Sweet... bittorrent links for us who don't like to bring small sites to its knees (we'e a 1% european minority of slashdot, who read the f*cking articles, and not just reload the browser on a page).
Also, the total cost of the film seems to have been somewhere along the lines of $1000 (NZ, $500 US). Maybe they didn't include the cost for Adobe Premiere (which they state they used). Maybe they'd bought it before hooting the film. Or something.
I also note that some people already noticed the bt link, as my connection is now brought to its knees (at 1337 peers, and all seeds fleeing things like that happen).
Trailer looked really nice, despite the accent which you Americans associate with beer.
I like the work they put in their project and it looks really nice. Must have been great fun to shoot the movie, too.
I once did a statist-job for a small film, and it is fun. The same fun people write software for.
There is a similar, albeit not so complicated and shaped project at Matrix-XP.
It won't be long before someone makes it available on CD/VCD/DVD at costs, for those like me who simply don't have a fast enough connection.
There are other sites out there that have every thing from gatherings to RL RPG but one I'm on, that has been around since the beginning, with some of it's members even making it on Matrix Revisited, is Matrixcommunuity
I am impressed with things fans have done, including writing full scripts of their own.
And as the matrix is, there is plenty of room, for everyones story.
Why do all "Matrix" spin-offs have something with "trix" appended to the end? Two examples are "The Animatrix" and now "The Fanimatrix". Why don't they do it the other way round? What's wrong with "The Matran" or "The Matrimation"???
It's also the same with unix. Why don't programs do something other than end in "x" (eg Linux, lynx, lyx, knoppix...)? They should start with "un" (or if you like linux, "lin"). For example, "open-office" could be called "un-office", and "link" could be called "linlink".
apt-get install deathstar && deathstar alderaan && echo "You're far too trusting"
Saw Trinity alike, Neo alike & Agent Smith... What's the freaking point anyway. I mean I respect their creativity/artistry n stuff but come on... use them on something else other than matrix copycat. (or try to make a story like one of those animatrix stories)
You don't think you're reading a bit much into the movie. First, why would anyone take up satanism because of the names of characters in a sci-fi movie. Second, why would anyone take up satanism that isn't already a fanatical christian? Those people are already nut jobs so who cares.

Rated R?
We do not live in the 21st century. We live in the 20 second century.
From the trailer it looks like they're competent film makers. I can't comment on the storyline, cos really, the trailer doesn't actually say much about it, its just showing "Look we can copy the stuff the Matrix did".
/.
I was going to complain about "Why don't these people write their own stories, based on their own created characters, etc etc, then we might have some new worthwhile cinema and new ideas coming though", but I guess there are people who do that, they just don't get on the front page of
I dunno, I guess I have the same feeling about professional cover bands too.
Their disclaimer says "Although copyrighted materials (e.g. music and sound fx) do appear in this film, we hope that the spirit of goodwill will prevail in allowing us to feature their work on our movie in the hopes that it will promote their own talents."
I like the idea, but it seems far fetched that the copyright holders will actually go for this...
Did you title the story "Re-done" because it sounds more sensationalistic? From their "What is the Fanimatrix" section:
*********
"The Fanimatrix - Run Program" is a collaboration between over a dozen professional actors, stuntpeople, special effects artists as well as an amateur filmmaking crew (all based in New Zealand) who set out to accomplish four primary goals:
1. Do something constructive with our spare time (boredom is a killer y'know...)
2. Create a short film that the general audience would actually WANT to see
3. Celebrate our mutual love for one of the finest film sagas put on our screens for over a decade - "The Matrix".
4. Provide an opportunity for everyone involved to practice and hone their filmmaking skills and respective talents.
"The Fanimatrix" is a fan-made, zero-budget short film set within the Matrix universe, specifically shortly before the discovery of "The One" (i.e. the first "Matrix" feature film). It tells the story of two rebels - Dante and Medusa - and of their fateful mission onto the virtual reality prison world that is The Matrix.
The film was shot on the Sony Mini-Digital Video format and edited on a PC editing suite utilizing Adobe Premiere, After FX and AlamDV Special FX. The entire production was completed over nine nights, ranging from six to over fifteen hour shoots, not including rehearsal and blocking-tape-shooting sessions. Most of the props, sets and lighting equipment was borrowed and locations were either hired or shot guerilla style. Although the film was a "zero budget" production, the final cost of the movie (combining personal expenses of cast and crew such as investment into costumes, transport costs, food etc) has reached upto approximately $1000 NZ (or $400-$600 US). The movie was shot entirely within Auckland City, New Zealand (our home).
So did the Matrix II....

Hey, it's people just going out and doing something, like this, that get the jobs. Look at 405 The Movie for a good example.
There are a number of ways you can view this. Yes, you can percieve that Neo is the equivilent of Satan, and that he is trying to bring disorder to where order exists.
However, I have a different view. Neo is the one, however, he could not do what he does without Trinity and Morpheous. They together also form the one, the trinity.
If we are going to go the route of the bible, let us look at Revelations. Satan controls the earth for seven years I believe. Then Jesus returns with his army and casts Satan back to the lake of fire. Could not the machines be Satan and their control of the earth be actually evil. Even if it is orderly, there is nothing in the bible that says the earth will necessarily be a teeming mass of Chaos. Just the opposite, the people are bar coded for better record keeping. Sounds pretty orderly to me.
However, I believe none of the above, I think it is just a fun movie. I just wanted to point out an opposite hypothesis to you.

Here is the FAQ. There isn't much other info on the site...
;) That and the amount of petrol we spent zooming around town.
F A Q
F.A.Q.
Q. What the heck does "Fanimatrix" mean?
A. It's the "Fan"-imatrix. As in it's a "fan" film.
Q. Will there by any sequels?
A. Depends. If the movie is popular enough across the Net and if nobody objects to the material, then we may yet see more "Fanimatrix" movies before long. We sure had a lot of fun putting the film together and would relish a second chance, possibly with better equipment and more money as well.
Q. What the heck IS Medusa doing in that office building?
A. Both her and Dante's stories provide lead-in material for a larger body of work should more "Fanimatrix" movies be made. You'll have to wait and see.
Q. What was the most expensive part of the whole project?
A. Possibly Dante's outfit. The actor - Steven A. Davis - got a little carried away we think
Q. What city is the story set in?
A. "Run Program" is not set in the same city that Neo lives in - for one thing all the cars drive on the left side of the road. Although the film is shot in Auckland, we always intended that the setting be something of a bohemian location - possibly Europe. To answer your question succinctly, we didn't really think about it.
Q. What was the most difficult part of the whole project?
A. Possibly the three consecutive nights of shooting in the machine-shop location and the Goth bar - over 48 hours of constant filming and practically all of it involving martial arts, wire-fx and handling large amounts of crew and cast. Combined with incredible lack of sleep, sore muscles and the freezing cold, it was the hardest shoot we'd ever done (professionally or otherwise) and many of us went home that night with our bodies riddled with physical pain and exhaustion.
Q. Is that copy of NMap on Medusa's machine trying to port-scan itself?
A. Shutupshutupshutupshutup....
Q. What are your backgrounds in filmmaking?
A. See our cast and crew page (coming soon).
Q. What sort of martial arts are featured in the "Fanimatrix"?
A. The same type you see in the feature films: Wushu (a.k.a. Chinese Martial Arts or Kung Fu).
Q. Is the story of "Run Program" canon?
A. No, the "Fanimatrix" films are not to be considered canon at all. We are in no way affiliated or involved with the Warschowski Brothers, Warner Brothers Pictures, Silver Pictures or Village Roadshow.
This will probably get modded down to -1, Troll, but...
From the sounds of it, they are more fans of themselves and less fans of the Matrix. People who like the Matrix don't try to overthrow it themselves.
Just a thought.
Doesn't Neo also mean new? And he is the "bringer" of the "new" order to the world?
And Morpheus IS the god of dreams in both Greek and Roman mythology and Ovid's Metamorphoses. And that's a fitting name as the character in the movie moves in, out, and through the Matrix much like a "god of dreams." (Since the Matrix is pretty much a world in a shared dream)
Morphirneus != Morpheus;
Just because it could be interpretted one way, doesn't mean that's the correct way.
Too much analyzing makes brain hurt!!!
What? Next you're going to tell me that Batman and Robin are gay symbols...
I have no sig, the eyebrows seal the deal. That's right. Eyebrows.
Lawsuites? Is that what you call the chairs in a attorney's waiting room?
Since when does the number "one" implicitly refer to Satan? Trinity is Neo's love in this, but according to you he's Satan and should therefore be fighting her.
Neo means "new" which, combined with "one", makes perfect sense and a nice play on words to illustrate his character in the movie - no Satan necessary.
Trinity means a group of three, and I find it more convincing that it refers to her than Christian theology. Perhaps its a reference to 1) her in the Matrix, 2) her in the "real world" 3) her as Neo's lover. I'm sure someone can think of a better trinity than that, but it beats the Christian one, which would be completely out of place.
Morpheus is the Greek/Roman god of dreams. What more perfect name could they give him? The Matrix is essentially a "dream world", and he pulls Neo out and puts him back in at will (initially).
Nebuchadnezzar II restored an empire to its former glory. In the Matrix, the ship brings Neo.
I have no clue where you're getting the whole "rightful path of obedience" thing. I frankly have no idea what you're talking about.
Oh, and why would someone's brain explode at the concept of The Matrix, and when did Hollywood sewers get here? Seems more like you found some religiously offensive "meaning" that offends you, and are now crusading against it. Some of this stuff may refer to your God, some may not. Whatever the case, I highly doubt this film is intentionally Satanic.

Well, I can't believe I'm going to bite, but I'll do it anyway. ;)

See, Tolkien's wizards were probably loosely based upon the mythical wizards from his time: Merlin and others of his ilk.
Back in the myths, wizards were defined more by their long age, wisdom, and foresight.
Modern fantasy literature defines wizards as those who wield flashy special effects and blow shit up. Not that I mind flashy methods of blowing up stuff.
Basically, modern fantasy has done to wizards what Star Wars has done to space movies: more flashiness, less subtlety.
Again, I'm not ripping on the wizards of Raistlin's ilk, just pointing out how Lord of the Rings is more of a classical fantasy (if such a thing exists). I love it and am absolutely pleased with how the books have translated to film.
That said, I'd love to see a well-done film adaptation of the Dragonlance stories as well!

Although this one didn't mention they "copy" Matrix, or they like Matrix, and the Director deny it has something to related to Matrix, but the fact is that it feel like Matrix.
First one: Ok, so Neo is the equivalent of Satan. But Satan's name was Lucifer, The Lightbringer, and he was supposedly the one who brought mankind intellection. Humans are creative - creativity means disorder. Lucifer is thought to be evil because of the thousands of years of brainwashing done by those who would like to have Order.

(Don't mind me, I had to write an essay on my final exam comparing the Matrix to the Bible. I just love pointing this stuff out, even if thousands of others have done it before) :)
"A signature always reveals a man's character - and sometimes even his name" - Evan Esar (1899-1995)
After watching the matrix many times I've come to the conclusion that there is no meaning that was supposed to be put into the movie. There are many little details thrown in to make people think about possible meanings, but there is no intentional meaning in the movie. Read some good literature and you'll find that there is an exact message the writer wants to convey. It seems to me that the matrix just uses some neato big words and a bit of confusion as a ploy. People want to find some meaning (and are too lazy to read a good book) so they obsess over the details of the movie and proclaim that the movie was intellectually deep and had lots of action.
:P

Much agreed on the human bodies as batteries, but otherwise thought it was excellent.
Already I'm not really sure if you're serious. Neo <-> one is hardly an impressive anagram, and I suspect neo is more often used to refer to something being relatively new or recent than to refer to Satan. Most Christians would hold that they are mono-theistic, I think, despite what the Jews or Muslims might say. Yes, he fights against order, and part of the order he fights against is ordered rows of human bodies used as batteries. More of a concern, I think, are all the people he kills along the way. (And here I could draw a parallel with either the Hebrew assult on the Canaanite people, or the Christian Crusades.) Lastly, you must realise that even within Christanity, there are widely different views on many moral issues. The search for absolute truth may well be a noble persuit, but the assumption that you already have it and everyone else is wrong is not.
A name can refer to more than one thing.
Don't believe everything you read, Nebukadnezar got a lot of bad press.
And since you're a member of Mensa, perhaps you can explain this. As you surely know, the god you worship made a covenant with the Israelites on Mount Sinai, and the English translation begins thus:
Note it does not say "There are no other gods besides me." It actually implies there are other gods. A god would not be likely to get that wrong. Of course, relative to the Israelite/Jewish view there are no other gods. But that's just their moral values. Why shouldn't other people be allowed to worship any god(s), or none, as they choose? Or, to get to the point, why should anyone else be bound by the morals that you have chosen? There are more references in the movie to Baudrillard's "Simulacra and Simulation." In fact, the entire movie is based on his world of signs without a reference ("the simulacra is the truth that hides the fact that there is none").
All through the movie signs are placed and later shown to be fake.
Furthermore Baudrillard advocates all out terrorism and violence to destroy the system (he does that in the last essay in the book), but admits that even terrorism will be assimilated into the system of simulacra by the simulators.
The gnostic and biblical references are just sugar coating.
I thought it was a reference to the legendary Brian Eno.
Actually, what I find problematic with the Matrix is it's open propagation of Christianity:
-Neo is a savior delivering his people from being slaves to their illusions.
Such is the infinite Grace of Popeye.
Go away religios troll idiot.
Bush and Blair ate my sig!
What you find problematic with the Matrix is a good example of what makes the story so great.
You can apply so many interpretations to the meanings of the story and its characters. And each interpretation can have an almost complete comparison to a philosophical analogy or school of thought.
Many people apply the hero journey as the correct interpretation. I find them all intriguing.

Just because someone posts a viewpoint far from the ordinary doesn't mean he's trolling or flaming.
I loved the part about the batteries -- "chaotic transcendence" and "brain exploding" -- that was pretty funny, and well put.
the rest of the post is pretty funny as well.
I would mod it up as funny, but those without a sense of humor would probably get scared by it and mod it back down. This has generated over 20 replies so far -- trolls just don't get that kind of play. If he is trolling, he did a darn good job. Mod posts down for being stupid or offensive, not for just thinking differently.
This post is interesting because it generates thought, and interest. There is no -1 (fundamentalist) option.
Another interesting biblical reference is the Merovingian. According to certain versions of history (which was first popularised by the book "holy blood, holy grail") the Merovingian kings were direct descendants of Jesus (who hadn't died at the cross and who fled Jerusalem with Mary Magdalene and later had a child with her) and that bloodline is the actual Holy Grail. One of the first things that hint at this possibility is the term Holy Grail, which come from the french "San Greal"; it's likely that it's a misstranslation of the term "Sang Real", which literally means Royal Blood.
This would mean that the Merovingian in the movie is a decendant of Christ, which adds an interesting twist to biblical interpretations of the movie.
People have always done these kinds of things for the films that they enjoy. Go to The Force.Net. All sorts of fan movies.
There was even an article here on slashdot about some KIDS that were remakng Indiana Jones (I can;t find it though. I'm sure someone will point it out for us)

There seem to be more and more of these kinds of ultra-independent movies coming out as the technology gets cheaper and the software more widespread. Is there a central rallying point for these kinds of zero-budget films? Some sort of collective or wiki or forum site or anything? This process of doing these movies really fascinates me, and I'd wonder what all these folks would say if they got themselves and their projects together in the same place. I mean, there's atomfilms, but that's even more more mainstream than this kind of stuff, IMHO. Anyone?
"The Matrix", "Star Wars", the Biblical Jesus story and the modern interpretation of the Jesus story all have the same ultimate basis, namely that each is another example of the hero-myth, of which there have been thousands and millions for as long as humans have had the ability to tell stories to each other.
:)
I believe (along with others) that the hero-myth has it's origins in our biological goals of learning and helping our children and community the best we know to succeed. This shouldn't be interpreted as saying that the author of the hero-myth is concious of these reasons (though there is plenty of evidence that the Gospel accounts were specifically written to fulfill earlier prophetical and mythical heroes such as those written about by Isaiah). Instead, we look for an example to use as a teaching and learning tool and if the available real examples aren't up to the task, we'll invent one or more characters who are.
Don't be upset that the Matrix draws upon the Christian mythos for much of its material. There's a rich history there and enough of our modern Western population knows that story to make this story culturally relevant on several levels. The good and evil symbols from Christianity are all part of a larger context that can be drawn upon by this storyteller without needing explicit reference. There is a natural-feeling rightness to the individual arrayed against seemingly overwhelming odds and finding a way to succeed that we wish for in our own struggles.
Life can be overwhelming if you sit down and consider all of the things you'll need to do to make a success of it. The hero myth simplifies the story of that struggle down to one gigantic challenge and provides a nice happy ending to help us get past the paralyzing analysis of our problems and just get to working on them.
As for the Jesus myth, I read it and see a philosophy very close to the Tao presented by Jesus, a philosophy that knowing Heaven during our lifetime is part of the potential and birthright of each person.
But then again, I could be wrong
Regards,
Ross
Do you mean this one?
which come from the french "San Greal"; it's likely that it's a misstranslation of the term "Sang Real", which literally means Royal Blood.
This doesn't make much sence linguistically. 'San Greal" has no meaning in French and even the term that it is supposedly misstranslated from (sang real) is not French. 'Real' is not French for 'royal' , it's Spanish. The French say "royale', which comes from 'roi' which means King. "Sang" is French for 'blood' (sangre in Spanish). So your phrase "sang real' , if it means anything, is a mix between French and Spanish, which doesn't seem to fit into the Francophilic theory about the Merovingian kings.

Actually, it does make sense; In medieval times the word Real was used as an adjective for royalty in certain circumstances, most notably when talking about the kings primary galley and the staff contained on it i.e. "La galere reale". Also, the name of the city Montreal quite obviously comes from Mont Real. I would know, I happen to live there, and am a native french speaker as well.
As for "San Greal", regardless of whether it actually means anything, that is the way it is most commonly written in most French Arthurian legends.

Being one of the fortunate (!) souls getting their butts kicked within this film, I would like to say that we're all very much ecstatic with the final result. Being a part of the engine, you never get to see the whole thing until it's done and everyone can see it. There were a bunch of questions I saw but I can't remember them all so I won't bother with any just now. I would like to mention that the imitation of the characters Neo and Trinity are purely incidental, err, I think. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have worked without a female in wet-look PVC and a male that can kick butt.

The first 45 seconds and last minute and a half is nothing but credits, disclaimers, and other BS. What a waste! This isn't a 2 hour movie guys, you don't need 2+ minutes for a 14:30 clip, especially when we're downloading it, adding an extra ~25 megs on the mpeg version. Besides that some of the fight scenes were a little slow and obviously choreographed, and the whole British theme is overdone since everyone knows every nationality will speak American English in the future...
