Impressive Half Life 2 Case Mod
risinganger writes "Well it didn't take somebody too long to get all enthused over Half-Life 2 (hardly surprising?) and so they have decided to present their lovingly created case mod based on the game. " Very cool looking fake rust thing.
He only made the case mod 9 months ago and it's already on the front page
Slashdot: News for Nerds, Stuff that matters only to them
The date of its construction aside, I wish I had not only the skill and equipment required to do something like this, but the creative ability to even know where to begin!
He made a much newer one on Valve's request since. Way to go TACO! http://www.bit-tech.net/article/146/ http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/11/08/ 1438215&tid=222&tid=10
I took my Half Life 1 case, removed all the interesting content inside and covered it in bauble and visual enhancements.

Does it make his computer call home for authorization before it works?
...so it's an old link, but he's added a new addition to celebrate the release of HL2 - the case has a new motor built in that randomly vibrates the case, causing it so shudder and shake at intervals throughout the game. Now that's the real HL experience :)
[...in all fairness, I've had no problems with the skipping bug...]

This case was commissioned by Gabe Newell and will be inside Valve. Originally reported by Bit Tech.
Small potatoes make the steak look bigger.
not only that, I think this is the third time it has been featured on the front page... what do you call that?
Note to self: No more arguing with the faithful.
At least the title doesn't claim it to be a Halo 2 mod any longer... Maybe somebody does read email sent to daddypants?
Not a Twitter sockpuppet... but I wish I was.
Does he have to spend 2 hours fucking about on an airboat before he can do anything enjoyable?
Slashdot: News for Nerds, Stuff that matters only to them
...I particularly like the "no /. anymore" message at the bottom of the page - slightly optimistic - clearly, lighting does struck twice (or thrice?) for them...
I can't find the slashdot story quickly enough but this has been all over slashdot already, just look at the date in the forums; 24-02-2004, 15:42.
Not that it'd make the case mod less "attractive" -- great piece of work imho.
Here are the same pics with a bit more commentary.
not only that, I think this is the third time it has been featured on the front page... what do you call that?
SUPAH-DUPE!
I bet the keyboard & mouse are not very nice to use... Bumpy and horrid...
Wow, I should not post when knackered.
I bet that keyboard is pretty damn uncomfortable. He ripped some holes in the bezel right under the ZXCV keys. I'm a big fan of HL 2, but DO NOT mess with my QWERTY!

He underestimates the carelessness of /. editors.
The blackmesa case was made 9-10 months ago. And while it's a very nice and cool case indeed (and he has some other cool ones on the stock), and it rightfully deserves the /. public attention, reporting it like this kind of news here... ridiculous.
I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I can think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.
Judging by the harsh criticism of the timing of this post, I'd bet that the getting-a-piece-of-ass factor of /. readers is at an all-time low.
This should not be that offensive people.. it's not like he posted something on the latest in fashion in NYC
Like Ebaums World? You'll love Shizzville
Maybe it's just me, but it looks more inspired from Fallout, than HL2 (other than the huge logo, of course). Especially the front buttons, rust, and yellow/black warning lines.
Off-Topic is the answer.
How many people can read hex if only you and dead people can read hex?
If it was a Matrix Case Mod I'd say somebody had really fucked up ./ BIGTIME!
And also... what a crappy admin... I mean 1 month to correct the glitch?!? DAAM!
This guy is going to feel real dumb when HL 3 comes out.
word.
I personally prefer the Doom mod.
A black case.
how about... triplicate? :P
Taco appears to be "Trip"-ping.
There are lives at stake here!
a TRUPE!
^^
It isn't slashdotted. It's a hobby page. Something is very very wrong here.
"It is a greater offense to steal men's labor, than their clothes"
But it looks cool. Nice job all around!
Stuff that Matters.
Apparently this cosmetic tarting-up of one individual PC matters so much that it has been on the front page of Slashdot three times.

Just stick a couple of snotlings on top (or better yet, one underneath holding the case on a pole in total contravention of the laws of physics) and it could win a Golden demonaward.

Hey, down here, mod this one up. If you want a REAL HL2 mod, this is the Blackmesa 2 mod by the same guy. I believe this was a requisitioned mod from Valve, so this guy went all out to model it after real in-game models. I should note that parts 1, 2, and 3 for this mod are posted, and it's already been about a week since it was last on Bluesnews, so once again /. is behind the curve anyway.
Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.
my computer looks like that and I didn't do anything more than I normally do with it... and the keyboard and the mouse too...
You can't handle the truth.
check out this doom3 casemod.

the thread is 3 pages long, make sure you go to the end to see the current status. holy detail..
No star wars or LOTR?! What the fuck are you reading slashdot for ANYWAY!? You MUST know who shot first in the latest release, and you MUST be PISSED about it! Turn in your geek card, you sad pathetic excuse for a nerd.
stuff
7. Profit!
It's TRIPE!
That's not a Half Life 2 case mod! That's a Half Life case mod with 'Half Life' crossed out and 'Half Life 2' written in in crayon!
"You saved 1968." - Ms. Valerie Pringle to the crew of Apollo 8
...can it run DooM3?
Hack your mind out of its sandbox.
This is simply his Half-Life 1 mod with a 2 added. I've seen this case literally a year ago. Minus the 2 of course.
in the bonds, ppka
...and it was still done before Steam had his copy of HL2 unlocked.
ought to have hired somebody to make up a few hundred (or even a few dozen) machines similar to that, and then given them away as prizes. Maybe even had a Half Life 2 tournament with the computers as prizes.
The higher the technology, the sharper that two-edged sword.
Most often the are cool at the most.
But here the design in the game has been transferred to the casing. When I looked at the green water in the glass, I thought, "I hope it serves as cooling also". And it did.
Very nicely done.
Number 2 and 3 generate lots of revenue and are therefore not wastes of time. Proof of number 2 generating lucrative money. Proof of number 3 are online ads.
Number 1 could arguably be productive if you are practicing for tournaments where you can win tangible assets for being a good player.
As for number 4 being a waste of time. We can see it didn't stop you from wasting yours and ours.
Hyprocrite!

will auto-link a URL
isn't it funny that an "auto-link" doesn't actually link URLs automatically? in that it requires user specification of the link.
foreach $link(@storylinks)
{
if (LinkExistsInOtherStory($link))
{
print "Warning $link has been used in another story.";
}
}
Why is this so hard?
Yes, but for fridges and maybe toasters.
1/3 of jokes get modded OT. If you get the joke, mod 1 in 3 insightful/interesting/underrated to restore karma balance.
very well done. I bet that beast runs 50MHz faster now. I would put a few more stickers on it though, and push it up to 60.
I remember seeing this almost a year ago. Maybe longer. This is definitly very old news.
It is beautiful, yet it is ugly. Who would want a rusty looking thing around?
It's not that I don't care about my visual environment; I live in a nice house, which I take care of. I drive a nice car. But these are things which are seen by people all the time. My computers, on the other hand, stay in my study and are rarely seen by anyone. They are there for the sole purpose of computing, not fancy desk decorations to be ooohd and aaahd at by all and sundry. Sorry, but I just think casemodding to that degree is pointless.
Dear AC,
My poor speling may be attributed to reading too much slashdot from day-to-day.
/^([Ss]ame [Bb]at (time, |channel.)){2}$/
It just looks plain dirty.
..."no /. anymore"
Ignorance is curable, stupid is forever.
I think I might get hurt if I had to change anything on the inside of this beast. I bet he had to make an entirely NEW computer, since this one is so troublesome looking. I, for one, don't feel like getting cut and shocked everytime I want to install some RAM or something
..........FULL STOP.
Yeah, I have the MPC issue it was featured in. I'm suprised it took this long for /. to find it.
One man's selflessness is another man's annoyance.
Yeah, but you could argue that art doesn't really have much of a point - it just sits there and looks cool.
My way back has been erased.
actually the HL2-mod that Piloux built for Valve is IMHO quite a bit more impressive.

Summary, part one
Summary, part two
I enjoy large posteriors and I cannot prevaricate.
It contributes to the development and culture of humanity. Modding your case doesn't.
With all the free time this guy has, it looks like he just got fired from CompUSA or something. I'm surprised that someone could actually do that without the paint making everything (keys, fans, buttons, etc.) stick. The sad thing is, I can actually look at the thing and think to myself, "hmm, I want one."
Well, I believe, just as duke nukem forever this could become one of those *reminded to us by taco every three months* things.
/. frontpage indicates.
As the current track record of this project and
Needs to have one of those things that hangs from the ceiling and grabs ya with the long apendage that dangles down waiting for something. Could put it between the powersupply and the drives and have a little action figure snatched half way up by the neck.
~~ Behold the flying cow with a rail gun! ~~
I'm not necessarily saying that case modding should be considered "high art", but it is an artistic creation.
My way back has been erased.
Second time around, it's dupe.
Third time around, it's TRIPE.
I have seen lots of "High Art" that is lower in both creativity and technical skill than many case mods.
Snowden and Manning are heroes.
isn't news, i agree. 99% of everything else on /. is great but this stuff just annoys me.
Well this is a good 6 or 9 months late. This was posted on just about every gamer forum that had a HL2 section or Case Mods section out there all those months ago. Funny how its only now slashdot worthy.
I read your sig as if it was part of the original post. Nice touch.
That takes some serious time for someone to do. Nice work by him.
