      It's 9 hours into April 2nd here... meh. As the Wikipedia page mentions, April Fools actually lasts for 47 hours, if you count all of the time zones around the world. Just don't tell Taco this, or he'll pretend he's Japanese on March 31st and Alaskan on April 2nd.

      I've never understood that tradition. I mean, things with 'day' in the title usually are actually a day long. I'd be pretty annoyed if someone told me to stop celebrating my birthday at noon. That'd only give me an hour in the pub. Anyway, I think there are two possibilities here.

      I think the 'stopping at noon' thing was intended to be an April Fool's joke in itself that people fell for.

      Or. more likely, it was a desperate attempt to get people to stop playing stupid stupid jokes without resorting to violence.

      Either way, it didn't work. Bring on the violence. :-)

      Yeah, but it's complicated. Especially with a site based in a country that spans several timezones and read by people internationally.

      Even if the last gag was posted at the stroke of midday on the west coast of the US, that still means it's about 8pm over here in the UK.

      Basically, on the Internet the entire day is a dead loss if you want to try to avoid any gags.

      Now, I've ThinkGeek found some cool stuff on ThinkGeek now and then, but it ThinkGeekis getting a bit ridiculous ThinkGeek to have an article about ThinkGeek every couple of hours. I don't ThinkGeekknow about anyone else, but ThinkGeek I'll be glad when I can ThinkGeek click on my Slashdot bookmark knowing ThinkGeek I won't see a page ThinkGeek full of ads for ThinkGeek. :P

      In all seriousness, though (*gasp* BLASPHEMER!)... have a look at the comment counts in today's articles: a lot of them haven't even broken 50 comments, and except for this article and the one with no content at all, none of them have even broken 100. It's probably not the best way to judge how many people are reading Slashdot, but I'd be willing to bet that they're not making much from the ads today. How many of the people who looked at Slashdot, clicked on one of the, um, articles, and decided to buy something on ThinkGeek might be a different matter entirely, but I doubt it'd be enough to make up for their lost ad revenue.

    If that's the case, I'm amused that he'd spend the time giving a collective "Fuck you, it's my site" to the readers. If that's not the case, I'm honestly curious. Taco and associates can't be so clueless as to think that the majority of the readership is pleased with the day's stories.

      In an interview that Malda gave a few years back, he openly admitted that the worst part of running Slashdot was all the incessant complaints, questions, and suggestions from people who were under the delusion he actually cares what they thought. Someone once asked why readers shouldn't be able to moderate stories the same way they moderate comments and his response was simply that the editors picked the stories they liked and that the site would never change from that while he was in charge.

      I'm honestly curious. Taco and associates can't be so clueless as to think that the majority of the readership is pleased with the day's stories.

      People continue to read and comment in them, don't they? Most webmasters dream all day long about owning a site like Slashdot where you have this large captive user base (some with paid subscriptions) and all you have to do is hire a couple of desk jockeys to post moderately interesting stories every hour or so. Marketing? None. Improvements? Hahahah. Managing? There's nothing to manage, it's a damn blog.

      Admittedly, Slashdot April Fool's days have gone downhill every year. Next year, as an April Fool's gag, they should simply not post any April Fool's stories at all. Or even take the whole site down, not even under any humorous pretense or anything, just have a single page that says something like, "Sorry, we've all taken the day off.       Next year, as an April Fool's gag, they should simply not post any April Fool's stories at all. Or even take the whole site down, not even under any humorous pretense or anything, just have a single page that says something like, "Sorry, we've all taken the day off. Why don't you update your software or flip through a newspaper if you've got extra time to kill?"

      Actually that'd be amusing in itself. Plus lessen the task of trying to sift through stories trying to find out which, if any, were valid.

      It'd also probably take a little less effort than the usual approach. Although probably not totally trivial.

      Did some research today on previous April Fools' Days here at Slashdot. Slashdot has been deliberately posting dupes on April 1st in order to make fun of their tendency to post dupes since at least 1998 or 1999.

      And people were griping and missing the jokes back then, too. :)

    I just tried to order that free shirt from thinkgeek. aparently, i have to order another item more than 10 dollars as well. Ok i said, and i picked out a nice Network Security shirt. Then it came to select my shipping options and put in a credit card.

    Thats all good too, but when i put in my address, it tells me that because im in Canada, it will be 18 USD to ship!!! (that btw is the CHEAPEST shipping method)

    This is an order of two shirts with the first shirt costing 14.99. So basically, if im understanding this, I would have to pay more for shipping a light cloth shirt, than the actual shirt is worth. Obviously i would be a fool to do that as it just doesnt sit right in my head.

    So in conclusion, to fix think geek and get people to buy from there, LOWER YOUR INTERNANTIONAL SHIPPING

The admins at slashdot are just having some fun with their site. I think most of the stories are intended to be incredulous and humorous and I read them with that thought in mind- or I skip them. Typically I scan the comments looking for informative, anecdotal or humorous responses. What I don't expect to see are readers whining and complaining about the articles. So I guess you could construe this post as a complaint about complaining, but I'd like think it's at least a little bit constructive. If you're going to complain at least make it funny or sarcastic so that others get something out of reading it rather than just a few seconds ticked off their life? Please?
