  1. Start of a trend? on Japanese Stores Lowering PS3 Prices · · Score: 1

I wonder if this will get Sony thinking at all. Technically they won't make a difference in profit from stores loweing prices, but if all shops start doing that and refusing new ones, its got to be bad news.

However Sony saying they won't lower prices means the only way you'll get a reduction any time soon is shops acting independently.

This is rather similar to what I thought when I was watching a video at school once. The video claimed their was no life on Mars (Or any other planet for that matter) because they lacked the key conditions life needs. The lack of water, or stable temperature or decent atmosphere etc were all touted as being proof that life couldn't exist on these planets.

My immediate thought was Why are we deciding all life is the same here? There are different species on the earth who need different amounts of things, Just because we all need water and a regular-ish temperature doesn't make potential alien life follow that rule. This scientist seems to be agreeing with me. Which is more then my teacher did at the time.

I'd guess that the Currys group were less bowing to pressure and more trying for publicity. Most people when buying games would probably not think instantly of Currys, so the amount of units they'd sell of Bully, would likely be minimal. The fact they can get non-gamer readers of the Daily Mail to think they're a reputable store buy not stocking this 'vile and disgusting game' (guessing they said something like that) means they'll probably get more customers over their other items then they lost by not stocking that one game.

  7. Re:Let's Googlewhack! on Sony, Analysts React To PS3 Launch · · Score: 1

In fact Sony could probably have charged more then $600 for the PS3, still sold out and made more/lost less money. As shown by e-bay people are willing to pay large amounts of money because of the limited supply, so it could have made sense for Sony to make as much as possible on each system.

Of course such an action would have damaged their reputation badly, Sony are not exactly the first people you think of when it comes to 'value', and look how people reacted to the $600 price tag. Sony seem to be playing a 'long game' trying not to alienate people and make them think that they'll never afford a PS3 so might get another console.

This long game plan is proabally why they're still advertising, they want people to know its there, you might not be able to get one now, but with the price they'd probably need to save up anyway.

I suppose the advertising could be just because marketing believeing the numbers of PS3's Sony originally said, which would mean they're would have been more available (assuming they'd have released more before Christmas too).

As for the '30 game rate to break even' 30 games isn't that many (Should imagine they're are quite a number of people with 30+ ps2 games), and don't forget Sony get money on Blu-ray discs too.

Reading through the reasons given I noticed one person saying "I'm a pretty loyal Sony consumer, but as I did with the 360, I'll probably wait a while for them to work out the kinks." This was right after saying they'd pre-ordered a Wii.
This type of thing is something a number of people are saying; ' you should wait to get a 2nd gen PS3, because like the 360 it'll have problems'. Yet I've not heard anyone say anything like that about the Wii.

Is there a reason for this or just because of the PS3's has had manufacturing issues/delays. Assuming the PS3 might have problems might make some sense but why not assume the Wii might too? Is it because the Wii doesn't have all the HD chips and new processors bound to go wrong or because Nintendo have a better track record or something? Or is it simply that people care less about a $250 device breaking then a $600 one?

(NB - if I get anything it'll be a Wii.)

I wouldn't go as far to say a 10% share for Google video was unsuccessful, but getting a 50%+ share of the video market would be far more successful. So in that sense I say it would be worth quite a bit. I'd agree I can't see why they need to buy it, though I can see why they might want to...

The more important thing is if they are buying it for the name what would they do with it? Change the name, or leave it as it is? Change the URL or not? I'm just not sure how this could work myself.
