  1. Re:Leave them "dead" on Abandoned Games · · Score: 1

Do you think it really rebalanced your karma to pay $5 or $10 for a game made 15 years ago that cost $40-$50 when you were actually playing it? Do you really think the people who worked on and made Gunship back then actually got any of the money you paid for your purchase?

  2. Re:Best solution? on Contact Lenses for Computer Professionals? · · Score: 1

I know your feeling... I sprung for it in September 2004, and probably not a day has gone by that I haven't noticed it or thought about my vision at some point since then.

After I got the surgery, both eyes ended up less than 20/20, one was about 20/30 and one was about 20/80. Walking around in big open stores like Target or Walmart was difficult because of the lighting, I couldn't tell who people were 20 feet away. I ended up having a retreatment on my left eye and it helped a lot, they said I could read 20/15 now, but I know that's not possible all of the time, and even then, it's not a sharp, clear 20/15, more like I can tell what the letters are.

Nightvision is not what it was, but not bad enough to keep me from driving. Actually, it helps me if there's traffic coming the other way, seems more light makes things sharper.

Opening my eyes the first time after sleeping in the Winter is a painful experience because they dry out. A humidifier helps some, and I don't have big problems with dry eyes otherwise.

I still have times when my vision fluctuates noticably, but again, it's not terrible, just kind of annoying sometimes. There's nothing that I really can't do now that I did before.

The worst part to me is not being able to see the night sky clearly anymore. Most of the stars are fuzzy and the moon is a big, semi-triple image mess. I miss that most.

I bought into it because everyone I know said it was the best thing they ever did and they wished they did it earlier. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone based on my experience.

  4. Re:Product Activation wouldn't be bad if... on Microsoft Genuine Advantage Cracked in 24 Hours · · Score: 1

This is the best idea I've seen on slashdot in a long while...

Remember when they announced XP and said there would be discounts for people who needed multiple copies? Then the discount turned out to be something like $5 or $10 depending on whether it was Home or Pro?

The drivers license thing sounds a little excessive, though. There's bound to be easier ways of doing it. I think something like how iTunes works would be better. Pay say $300 for up to 5 concurrent installations. Who cares how many times you format and reinstall or what hardware you change then.

To me, this whole thing is similar to the music industry and music swapping. If they and Microsoft give their customers what they really want at reasonable prices, then both would probably have a lot less problem from piracy.

I think I suggested something like this to Dave Matthews Band's website a couple of years ago after getting annoyed that yet another taper loser felt the need to setup a mic stand right in front of seats I just shelled out $120 for.

I was thinking cdr's or minidiscs, but I think it's a given that a band could make a lot of money selling the show at the show. I'd love to have copies of all the shows I've been too, but it's much too big of a hassle to find boots and when you do they generally sound like they were recorded in a tin can anyway.

Paying inflated concert prices for this sounds good too me!

  11. Re:For those who think PM was panned on 'Matrix Revolutions' Opens Today · · Score: 1

I'll back you up on the PM thing. Everyone applauded in the theatre when it was over here the first night it was out. I'll even admit to being one of the ones who said I liked it initially. I think I wanted to like it so much, but in the end, was very disappointed.

Reloaded to me just seemed forced. I still like the story, characters and universe, but it just seemed forced. I felt that after the first time I saw it, things just seemed to be happening in it to be happening, whether they were fights or whatever.

Revolutions, on the other hand, I enjoyed. I don't know what people wanted from it. I didn't expect it to answer everything. I find that I enjoy stories that leave me with some questions afteward to ponder even if I'll never know the "right" answer. If it had answered the questions everyone keeps complaining that it should have, those same people I think would be complaining about the answers they got. Maybe people were expecting something more profound. I've learned not to expect that from the entertainment industry in any way over the years. (I don't even hold out much hope for Return of the King after the Two Towers seemed to become something more akin to a Lorne Michaels SNL alumni flick with Gimli as the star comic).

"Always on", "100x faster than dialup" "Brings multimedia and games to a new level"

I'd have a lot more sympathy for these poor little cable conglomerates if they offered more honest advertising.

    How about:

"Always on, but prone to going down for days at a time for no apparent reason."

"100x faster than dialup, if your computer is rolling down a steep hill."

"Brings multimedia and games to a new level, but if you use either for an extended period of time, we'll ask you not to, or just cut you off altogether. Or we might just raise your rates through the roof!"

    and, my personal favorite:

wonder how hard it would be to mod a bios to let you boot up things like Office 2000 or something like that. Not that it would be particularly useful displaying to a TV. Something like geiss would be cool to run on a big screen hi-def tv, though.

Conversely, when will someone get me a program that will let me play DOA3 or other xgames on my PC? I wouldn't think that would be too hard. I think MS should even support it because if we can buy a program to let us buy and run games on our PC, they don't lose money on each console sold.

Did you even look at the list??? Some of the songs are on the list solely because they have the word crash in the title.

I've got a great idea!!! Let's all meet in Central Park and we'll burn every book, magazine, record, videotape, and computer game that has the word crash somewhere in it. This way we can be sure we'll never ever have to be faced with something that might remind us of this tragedy.

I'm sorry, but if someone's in downtown NYC, I'm sure there are plenty of other reminders to re-open wounds other than songs on the radio. Think about it.

This kind of behavior by CCC, I think, is one of the goal of the people who did this. They already have us giving up seemingly simple thing we take for granted, like being able to listen to what we want. Next time, what will we give up? Being able to travel to other states?

I spent the last two days trying to figure out how to keep my old C128, Intellivision and Atari 5200 machines from when I was a kid. There were a lot of great games for those systems. The AD&D games for the Intellivision could easily stand in the top 50, I think. Star Raiders for the 5200 as well. Overall, it's a predictable list of games, I think. The only real crime for me is that Grim Fandango didn't make it.
