This is one of the most disgusting, flagrant abuses of corporate control over the US government that i have ever seen. I had to read the article twice, just to verify that it wasnt satire or the like. When stories such as this, and the recent crackdown on Kazaa users, i really have to wonder how exactly money could take something beautifull and free and stain it like this.
Im not trying to troll here, but doesnt this seem a little odd that behavior like this has multiplied 50 fold since our ever so wonderfull president stepped into office? I want clinton back.
Seriously, is there really a need for something like this to happen? At the risk of frowning on something that some guy did "just because he could", does anyone actually use these computers anymore? I deal with alot of users, and the OLDEST machine ive seen in years still being used as an internet capable machine is a 486/66DX. Those are few and far between. Im all for hobbys, (i recently spend a week learning how to program atari games) but is this really front page material? Arent there more

You could never know for sure with the/. crowd, but my sig is actually mocking the masses of "leet" indivuduals that believe everything that crosses the front page here. Nothing against OpenBSD of course, i do happen to use it for a firewall.:)

Do you have any idea how odd it is to explain to mom why people are trying to enlarge her "member"?
is that something works well, out of the box, without any extra configuration. Don't get me wrong, as a browser, Mozilla is leaps and bounds ahead of other browsers when it comes to plugin installation, etc, but its not quite as mindless as IE.
Trust me, i work at a small beige box company, and I've installed mozilla for customers (it does get to a point on a win98 box where IE just wont run without crashing ((as soon as you finish the installation:P))), and still the largest complaints are flash installation, streaming media not working properly, or sites just being incompatible with Moz.
Im actually quite obsessed with my Model M's;) On the 3 PC's i work with on the job, and on the 2 PC's at home, theyre all sporting good ol' clickies. I actually managed to find one IN THE BOX about 5 months ago, it was like a second X-Mas;). Completly unstaind, it even smelled new.
Im not sure how aware/. readers are of the
blackballing
THG is performing at the MML, but it absolutely sickens me. I've been reading Toms for a number of years, and this kind of control over the online media HAS to be stopped, before it becomes the defacto standard for events like this. Major props to amdmb.com for bringing this type of slime to our attention.
"ahhhh thats it! they reversed the access code!"

Video encoding (obviously) suffers the same fate. It wasnt long before i realized that plopping all my compressed videos into Adobe Prem and putting them through anothing encoding caused much suck. FYI, most video editing software supports loading frame by frame, and 3d max happily outputs video as a series of TGA's;)
revealed these guys (http://www.networkstl.com/whatisit.htm). They claim nationwide availablity, althought the monthly fee of $99 is somewhat high. It all depends on how much your internet is worth, i suppose.
Most games released today generally have a demo, usually available before the official release of the game. It either lets you know whether you want the game, or gets you hopelessly addicted...
Just like Doom....
Im not sure at which point this year he picked these machines up, but within the past month ive picked up a few of the walmart variety, and ive got to say that theyre fine. I purchased the 200 dollar model and i got a 1.2GHz Duron,128,nic,sound,video,20GB HD...(Ironically, im installing mandrake on one now).
For the low low price of just 217 (My shipping was much lower than his?), i got this guy shipped right to my doorstep. Honestly, theyre great. Fantastic.
Although i wasnt the biggest supporter of Lindows before, after seeing it in action, it really is what my grandmother would need to use Linux. (It even comes with a recovery CD)
Its also worth mentioning that for an extra couple hundred (was $397 for me with shipping) you can have a 14.1 inch flatpanel included with that. As far as the quality goes, its nothing id use for proffesional imaging, but for surfing and sims its more than fine.
Sounds like a deal to me.
And NO, i dont work for walmart.com:p
this is the pefect example of how technology is beginning to discreetly integrate itself into our world. Transparent transistors, mirroring tv screens... Tommorow might be coming sooner than we thought.
The days of having monitors that blend into the wallpaper, or keyboards that only appear as part of your desk when used arent far away.
The company i work for is contracted to deploy computers for schools, and i've deployed about 1500 computers with openoffice.org in the last year or so. Everyone involved (especially the superintendant of the most recent school) seemed thrilled at the idea. I hate to say it, but this really is a matter of exposure, and its up to US to create awareness of opensource software in the non-technical community.
On a different note, i've been including openoffice and the gimp in the images i use, is there any other software that might be fitting in the k-12 environment that im not aware of?
heh
or you could have a script do it for you.
instigating a full scale, all office FLOPPY DISK WAR!
It never fails to impress me how much the majorty of /. readers/moderators have absolutely no concept of sarcasm....:p

Takedown was much better, imho. Its a shame its only available via shady irc channels and perhaps kazaa.
You havent built robots to do all of this for you? phhht.
