Yeah, but sometimes even that isn't enough to drown out the worst of dorm neighbors. During my freshman year, I go the priveledge of living next to 2 football players. They were loud (and that's ignoring the stange bumping and moaning when they were both home)...but one night they came home drunk and cranked their stereo with crappy rap music. Now I don't normally mind during the day, but waking up at 2:00 in the morning to aweful "music" is just plain grating. Then they passed out. Our RA was out of town that weekend, and the substitute RA didn't have the authority to enter the room without the concent of the occupants, who were passed out drunk. Needless to say the stereo played the rest of the night. Now that I look back, I wonder if they were ever even talked to about it.
And this was the same floor that the cleaning people refused to clean for a whole month. And the same floor where a bathroom stall was kicked in, the soap dispensor ripped off the wall, and the shower curtains and rods were stolen (not just broken). Ah the joys of a college education. Boy am I glad I moved off campus:)
While I agree that it is these entities right to choose what to allow or not to allow, that doesn't mean they can't be criticized for their choices about free speech. Free speech is not just a concept written into the Constitution, it's a fundamental human right. The 1st amendment is just a written interpretation of this right. A corporation can curtail free speech, legally, but legality does not argue morality.
"free speech can not be limited without being lost"...not a single reference to the Constitution, but rather a reference to the concept of free speech.

Though I disagree with your scorn to all of today's tuner scene (at least that's how I interpreted it), it is fun to harrass the heck out of 'em too. I especially like to make sure there is a cop sitting up ahead (pretty easy to do in a small town that has two large roads...speed limit 25...filled with teenagers on a Friday night), and pull up next to one of them....then make like I want to race. They race ahead and catch the attention of the cop...whirling blue and red...and I get a good laugh.
Mr. AC, quite frankly, go screw yourself. If I had mod points, I would bury your comment. Flaming is one thing, making personal attacks against somebody you don't know, about situations you weren't in, and doing it as an AC is something far more heinous.
I couldn't agree more with you. I am what I consider a well rounded gamer. I like consoles for some sects of games: simpiler RPGs, some action, fighting, racing, platformers. The controls just feel right. Then there's RTS and FPS for the computer, great controls for more complicated movements or more precise movements. Oh, and then there's Descent...I have never been able to play that game with less than 16 buttons, so I can never see something that complicated on a console.
The reason I put the spoiler notice in was more for the fact that I devulged a portion of the plot that may be different from what people expect. A lot of people think that Pontius Pilot was a complete bloodthirsty asshat, rather than how he was portreyed in the movie.
Now that I look back, the spoiler notice may have not been required.
I do agree with the Hollywoodification of the Passion
My interpretation of the the demons were that they WERE his guilt. I didn't think that they were ACTUAL demons sent by Satan to haunt him. My guess is that it would have been difficult to pull off such a horrible guilt without some sort of embodyment of it.
I agree that the Hollywoodifications did seem out of place, though I think that at least a couple of them were there to make the story a better movie rather than biblically accurate.
And, drat it, if I see that movie again, I will be humming that song!!
The whole group think thing is pretty much in every "group" out there. Take a look at skaters (those kids on skateboards)...most of them dress a certain way, why because they like it and it gives them something in common with others. Most of them watch the same videos, why because they like them and it gives them something in common.
I think a lot of it comes from the desire to fit in with the group of people one deems "cool" (in a sense). A lot of Christians base their beliefs of "cool" on religious beliefs, and therefore the more religious, the more "cool", and the more they want to be like them.
Another problem I have with the group-think of Christianity is usually judgement is improperly placed. Somebody sees a CD that looks "satanic" and tells their Christian friends...soon by word of mouth every "God-fearing" Christian avoids it for fear of being not "God-fearing".
With all that said, I am a practicing Christian, but cannot stand the hive mentality. I tend to think of myself as very openminded. Sure, there are things that I think are wrong that other people (and myself) do based on my faith, but I can't force those ideals on somebody else. If they ask me how I feel, I'm perfectly okay with saying that I disagree, but my primary concern is me doing what I feel is right. I guess my belief is that God would rather have us follow him on our own choice rather than having dogma-stuffed robots following him.
***Spoiler***
I didn't think the movie was anti-sematic, but I think where some people may have felt that Pontius Pilot was very hesitant to give the Jewish people what they wanted, the crucifiction of Jesus. But the Jewish didn't really come off as evil, just looked more like a bad case of group-think with a couple of key pharasees (sp??) pulling the strings.
Is it just me, or am I the only one who shudders at the thought of an optical disk based portable?? I've got my walkman, and it rips the shit out of my CDs...horribly. Granted I'm not kind to the machine (backpacks will do that), but the idea of a portable Mini-DVD concerns me. One little scratch and gobs of data are damaged, and in a portable optical, scratches will happen. I guess I'm happy with the cartridge system for portables.
I think you might be a little confused about clustering in general. There are several different types of clustering out there right now...beowulf clustering being the most commonly known. In a beowulf cluster the machines work as a whole and threads are shared across the machines. This is great for speed issues, but a fast network between the machines is nessesary. Also, it is infinatelly easier to get machines of the same architectures to work together because, with beowulf, each node needs to know each other node. This makes different architectures sometimes hard to work with. Beowulf clistering really is a specific way of clustering, not really concerned with homo/heterogeniality of the cluster itself (past the setup difficulty).
Another common clustering method is MOSIX. Mosix is great because it's really easy to set up (even with different architectures). You normally have a head node on which you start your application. The MOSIX kernel looks at load levels on the machine, and then if it feels that it is too high, delegates those processes to another node in the system (can either be random, or to a specific node in the cluster). Since MOSIX is process based (and controlled by the kernel), it makes integrating different architecture types so much easier, and it also allows the easy integration of new nodes. Since you have a leading node, really only the leading node needs to know about the new node, versus a beowulf cluster, in which each node needs to know about the new node.
There are quite a few other cluster architectures out there right now, but I don't know much about how they work.
Wow...freshman in high school...on slashdot...might I recommend unplugging:) Sounds a lot like the story of my life. I'm horribly shy...only have had one girlfriend (who I might add dumped my ass a couple of months short of three years for one of my "friends"...but I'm not bitter)...and have no self confidence. I wish I knew how to overcome my social, do I daresay anxiety...but I suppose we all learn in time (I'm a Junior in college...evidentally I'm a slow social learner). All I have to say is that maybe try getting into a geeky sport (fencing is my flavor). It seems to help me with my depressive state AND a way to meet other people...plus stab them in the chest repeatedly (and nobody get's hurt). If you find out the secret to sociality, let me know!!
I thought that I was the only one who felt this way. I had been tracking the making of LOTR for 6 years before it came out, and as every year got closer and closer to it, I started to get giddy. The for 3 years I rode on the high of finally seeing what I can been waiting for. Now I look back and wonder why I got so excited.
They are by no means bad movies, and I would much rather watch them than most others out there, but I have to say I look back, and if it weren't for Weta, I would have been horribly pissed off. Yeah, I'm a purist, and feel that some of the things he changed were a problem, but really the acting sometimes drug the series down. Specifically what ticked me off the most about the series isn't what Jackson removed, but rather what he changed. Sometimes it screwed with logic, and othertimes continuity.
And I totally agree, Jackson can have a hayday with the humor of the Hobbit without having it seem out of place (in fact I'd be dissapointed if he didn't include it).
I feel the same way. I also feel screwed over when rules that should apply to everybody involved end up only applying to the human player(s). I felt particularly upset with Soul Caliber 2 on the blade master missions. Some of the levels would have a combat rule in place, such as the edge of the arena supposidly sucks the fighters towards the end, or you and your enemy are sucked towards each other. Unfortunatelly, in the case of the arena edge, only YOU are sucked towards the edge. In the case of the fighters being sucked together, YOU are sucked towards the computer.
Another example that comes to mind is the computer players in older RTS games. Why should the computer start with 15x the money that I start out with?
I enjoy a challenge, but I do not enjoy a "oh, we need to make the game more difficult....well let's just add this here...oh...it's not fair for both sides....oh well, it's tougher" tactics.
Though I'd LOVE to see the Silmarillion on film (as illustrated by my name), I never see it happening. I think, while the Lord of the Rings is probably the better single story, the Silmarillion is more of a painting of Middle Earth. It greatly builds the culture, history, and background of all of Middle Earth.
Personally I feel that Beren and Luthien would probably have the best chance at a movie adaption, but I wonder if it could be properly done without explaining WHAT the simarils are and the bloody history behind them. I think that the story elements of the Silmarillion may be too interconnected to make an adequate movie without raping the storyline. Drat I hate being a fanboy. Not to say it couldn't be done, I just don't think it could be done easily.
Hopefully it won't fight to the death with other virus scanners. I've had people who think that two virus scanners are better than one (Norton and Mcafee)...I've never seen a system crash faster than when those two try to start. Had to help out at least two people with that problem. I can only imagine if one of them was built into the OS....
When will we stop hearing that excuse?? It's the potential for abuse that bothers me so much. Have you ever been harrassed by a police officer, even though you were not doing anything illegal?? There are always people who will abuse the system for their own personal ends. Laws like the Patriot Act remove the checks and balances to make these abuses more difficult. With these checks gone, the ease of abuse skyrockets.
This article isn't about CONSOLE history, but rather VIDEO GAME history. Classics like Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy...these games ARE about video gaming history. Yeah, the systems were mass produced for the home, but that doesn't make them worse. The NES, SNES, Genesis, they aren't all that old, but that doesn't mean they still aren't integral parts to video gaming history. I'd love to see where we would be today without these systems. Not to mention that in 30 years, these systems WILL be a huge part of video gaming history. I'll reiterate, just because they are fairly recent, that doesn't make them anyless important to history.
are you refering to Mindless Self Indulgence? If you're not, they've got a song called "I Hate Jimmy Page". I like 'em, though they are a little...different.
I have to say, I absolutally adore multiple screen setups. At home I have a 20" and a 17" display (the 20" is on a GeForce2MX and th 17" on a Matrox Millenium). One thing I've noticed, at least with me, is that having dual monitors has affected the amount I multitask. After coding/surfing at home on a dual-display setup, I go to a single display iMac and end up feeling horribly slowed down, just because I can't have a billion and a half windows open (okay...so maybe I exagerate). I also notice that it decreases my attention span. Oh, but you HAVE to try coding in java and having one window to code in, and a browser at the api's...and having both windows maximized...oh so sweet.
Cheers.
How is it that Darwinism (a theory) has to be proven wrong, yet Creationism (also a theory) has to be proven right. I call double standard. And don't try to give me the Darwinism is a theory in the mathematical sense and Creationism is a theory is a thory in the common sense. Evolution does have some evidence that SEEMS to suggest at it's correctness...but have you ever heard of epicycles?? Look it up. You'll see that the evidence fit the theory, but it was WRONG (at least we think now). Just because we have a suggestion of proof, doesn't make it true.
I think some of the problem is tha big artist's like Britney Spears don't "own" the copyright for their music. They sold their music, souls, among other things, to the RIAA, who then control the copyrights to the music. Basically, if the RIAA doesn't want it, any artist(s) associated with them cannot do something like this. (NOTE: this is based off of my own understanding of how the recording industry works...I am not a lawyer nor work with the music industry, so I just may be off my rocker, and if I am, feel free to tell me:-) ).
Yeah, but sometimes even that isn't enough to drown out the worst of dorm neighbors. During my freshman year, I go the priveledge of living next to 2 football players. I seriously doubt many...course the fact that it's in many languages OTHER than English might work against it in that respect.
