And I think the author whom you stole it from was not the original author. Not the original author of the concept anyway. Scott Adams (the Dilbert creator) wrote a "thought experiment" which espouses this very concept, and he wrote it a number of years ago.

If anyone's interested, he gives it away as a free eBook.

The official statement is littered with phrases like "protect the lives of all civilians" and such. What the statement conveniently sidesteps is the fact that under strict Islamic law, almost anyone living in America (or most western nations) are not civilians. They (or we) are considered "infidels".

I've made the rounds with distributions, and I'd honestly have to say slackware is still the way to go.

I was going to do some hosting for a friend, so I figured it was a good excuse to do some benchmarking between my then two favorite ditros: slack and gentoo. I did a base slack install, compiled mysql, php, and apache from source, then ran apache's benchmarking tool. Next, I did a stage 1 gentoo installation, complete with compiler optimizations, and installed the exact same version of the three aforemention packages.
Results? Slackware, hands down. Slackware was approximately 10% more effecient taking things into consideration such as load, memory usage, and processor usage. (yes, both tests happened on the same server and sorry, I don't have exact numbers handy)

I just thought this information might be useful to anyone considering spending a week of their life watching 'make' do its thing.

I'm sitting on a brand new beautiful ipod, and all thanks to gratis. Me and five friends even made some money on it.

As of a month ago, they had an offer for circuit city's rewards program or something like that. I honestly don't know what it was for sure, but they gave everyone who signed up for a $1 trial offer a $20 gift card. So here's how it worked:

    1. Sign up for freeipods.com, make sure to UNCHECK all checkboxes regarding additional email.
    2. Spend literally two minutes clicking no to all of their questions
    3. Click on the link for circuit city, fill in legitmate information.
    4. Tell a bunch of friends about it, and ONLY EXPLAIN TO THE ONES WHO ARE INTERESTED how they can get $19 at circuit city. (Note: I'm not ruining friendships this way)
    5. Cancel the circuit city offer after the gift card comes.
    6. Wait a month
    7. I'm listening to music on my ipod, shall we say, "profit"

I made money, (at circuit city), so did my friends, and now I have a free ipod. I NEVER spammed my referral link, it was only word of mouth. Things like this can be a problem, but only for those of us without scruples.

FWIW, I've got very little spam, and I really didn't give away much personal info.

    YMMV.

Coffee roasting at home using one of these popcorn poppers is a great idea, and anyone serious about having access to good coffee should look into it.
Personally, I got completely sick of the taste of Starbucks, so I started looking online for some better beans. Coming accross some newsgroups, I found that many people would buy unroasted beans online, then simply roast them at home with a crude device, such as a popcorn popper. People were reporting tremendous results, and I just had to give it a shot
Truth be told, the worst tasting coffee that I have ever roasted by myself tasted leaps and bounds better than what I could get at my local startbucks. Not to mention that its the absolute cheapest way to get coffee.

I know this is going to sound like flaimbait, but I beg of you, hear me out on this one. In windows, its a known fact that very few people know how to use the automatic updates. Thankfully, when SP2 came around it became much easier. Now, whenever security holes are found, they eventually find their way onto a windows user's machine and thus patching IE. Now, lets take it for granted that there WILL be, at some point in the future, an exploit for firefox. Maybe not a huge one, but we all know that no program is perfect. How many people, when this bug comes out, will know to update firefox? I would venture to say that the same people who had troubles with windows's automatic updates are going to have a much more difficult time getting firefox to update. For the record, I use firefox exclusively, but I'm a bit cautious about switching my clients over for this very reason. Just my $0.02
