Rise of the Triad's Christmas theme
Set 12/25 and you will get a Christmas theme in Rise of the Triad game. There are other Easter eggs for other holidays too!

3D Realms, You So Crayzay
dont ask me why i know this but that little pixelized naked woman they have pictured on that atari 2600 DNF link you posted is from a game called Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em. i hope this means the design team is putting in similar fantastic gameplay ideas into DNF.

Running Gag
Previously on Duke Nukem Forever: Penny Arcade, Atari 2600. The Atari 2000 version is actually a real cart.

Re: Racism vs. Violence
Or what about those games that depict World War II? Should the Germans or the Russians be pissed?
When I was looking up info on DukeNukem3D for a post, I noticed this nifty litte blurb for "Wolfenstein 3D":
Due to the game content, this game may not be ordered by residents of Germany.
I'm not going to look for other examples, but if they can't purchase the game... -
Re:Popular Media Topic
On Monday I saw that Fox 5 was running a story on
:: brace yourself :: Duke Nukem 3D!
I was laughing for about a minute when I saw the clips in the commercial previewing their 'news'.
Since when is EIGHT YEARS OLD considered new?
Also, if you look at the advisory label (about 2 screens down), it's rated 1 of 4 for "Nudity/Sex", an issue that Fox5 was pursuing (at least in the commercial I saw). At least use an example that's 2 or higher. Then again, the commercial wouldn't have been as funny. -
Great Q&A
... Putting a game through that one extra QA run probably means delaying the shipping date. Unfortunately the trend seems to be just that.. moving away from quality, towards 'assembly line' products
...
Three cheers for the developers of Duke Nukem Forever for choosing quality over 'assembly line' products! -
Re:Building a mod inside a level editor...
3D realms, provided a random level generator for Rise Of The Triad.
The utility came on the CD version of the game. It would work as advertised and generate random levels. Every now and then you'd get a good deathmatch level out of it.
So I would imagine that one could write an engine to generate a random level for any game. This would be a bit simpler probably for older 2 1/2 D games like Doom, ROTT and Descent, compared to full 3D engine games like the Quake and Unreal series. But definitely do-able I think.

Couple Observations...[The game name] should be non-generic (avoid overused words, like "warrior," "shadow," "dark,"
...I guess Shadow Warrior 2 is out of the question?
The game was originally titled Dark Justice, as this well describes the game's theme.
That's rather funny... Max Payne 2 had an episode of 'Dick Justice' on one of the TV's, where a fugitive cop went after the people who killed his wife. But instead of film noir style, it was like 70's.

Re:Heh...
Hey... that gives me an idea.... anyone interested in doing a rewrite of commander keen? How about Commander Gates: Goodbye Windows! for a title
:-) -
Raptor does this on designers' birthdays
If you play on the one of the designer's birthdays, Raptor: Call of the Shadows will give you a silly song for the beginning instead of the usual Apogee ditty.

Re:Theory #1
Does that mean that Longhorn is coming out for the Atari 2600 also?
-
Use of property rights?
[The game companies] label [efforts to make older games available through downloads and emulators] piracy that could undercut future efforts to reissue such games in the form of classic compilations or to update them as remakes.
Ok, so the plan is to bring out a collection of old games for the Atari XL or the ZX 81 or the C64 in the future? And there will be enough potential customers so that releasing the game into the public domain (or publishing the code) is a bad move financially??
I don't think so. And even if it was true, how many collections of old (8-Bit) games do you know? And how many follow-ups to a classic game have hit the market and made money?
I guess the real problem is that the old companies do not exist anymore, or have been bought out by other companies. And now nobody in the gaming industry knows or cares who has which rights to those games.
And with regard to 'remakes': the Duke Nukem 3D source code has been published under the GPL. Ports have been created. Will this hurt the sales of DNF? Go figure ;) -
Re:Only Indy until your successful!
Well, some companies like 3D Realms and id Software are still independent.
:) They employ publishers, but only for marketing, distribution, etc., not to to finance their development. If Duke Nukem Forever ever gets done, this will be an indie game. :) -

Re:But...
from 3DRealms max payne site:
Q: So let me get this straight, I've read articles on Max that mention Remedy, 3DRealms and The Gathering of Developers. Who's doing what?
A: Remedy is developing the game, all technology, editors, art, sounds, the story, etc. have been done at Remedy office. 3DRealms is taking part in that development by helping out on content and gameplay matters, Scott, George and everyone at 3DR are outstanding hardcore game developers and we really dig working with them. The Gathering is our publisher and will eventually ship all those Max Payne boxes to the shelves with Take2 handling European distribution. -
This ought to be good
For programming mods for Duke Nukem Forever for the 2600

Already found it
Didn't Commander Keen already discover life on Mars? I remember running all over that place.
Billy Blaze, eight year-old genius, working diligently in his backyard clubhouse has created an interstellar starship from old soup cans, rubber cement and plastic tubing. While his folks are out on the town and the babysitter has fallen asleep, Billy travels into his backyard workshop, dons his brother's football helmet, and transforms into... COMMANDER KEEN--defender of Earth! In his ship, the Bean-with-Bacon Megarocket, Keen dispenses galactic justice with an iron hand!

Re:Is Duke Nuke Em Forever Real?
It's actually in the works. Has been, since, uh 1997 (almost six years so far, and counting!) The webpage is here.
The DNF team started work with the Quake I engine, dumped it for the Quake II engine, dumped it for the Unreal engine...not sure what they're working on now, but it better not be the Unreal engine (the original one; not UT or UT23k), as that'd be hideously ancient by now too.
Still no release date set. But we're assured that they're still working on it. -
Not first non-x86 port
It was released for Macintosh.
The best selling game of 1996, 3D Realms' Duke Nukem 3D is coming to the Macintosh as MacSoft ships the title today
(Circa 1997) -
Re:Another new graphics engine..
of course they did, and they even have achived something
-
Re:Why theres no windows port
The win32 port here was released several hours before the linux port.
-
Win32 version is out, ignore the article's troll
a Win32 port HAS been released. Check this thread on the 3drealms forum. It supports all versions of duke (except the shareware), and you don't need to install it, you just need the
.grp file and the .cons that were released with the source. -
Re:So...
It's been released actually..
-
Re:Build Engine was Awesome
... or maybe Prey.Does anyone know what happened to Prey? I remember it was announced back when around the time Quake came out and KMFDM were supposed to provided the soundtrack.
The most I can find about it is this outdated FAQ.
Any info would be great!

Re:Hoax
Oh, haven't you heard?
They've delayed DNF due to a platform switch. This one looks REALLY good!

What about Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter?Arguably the best of the series, it looks from this site that it's pretty much a no-go as far as ever being published.
"The original Keen series was a trilogy of games. Keens 1-3 were collectively called "Invasion of the Vorticons". As Tom talks about above, the sequel was also to be a trilogy of games, but the id guys were convinced to break Keen 6 off and make it into an independent retail item. To this, the sequel that was distributed through Apogee was only two games. Episodes 4 & 5 were collectively called "Goodbye Galaxy", and Keen 6 was called "Aliens Ate My Babysitter". Keen 6 was sold by FormGen in retail, and since it was in retail, FormGen convinced the id guys to put in some off disk copy protection for the game. The fact that Keen 6 was broken off into it's own game, and the addition of the copy protection kind of made the "vibe" not the same as the original, but Keens 4-6 are awesome games, even if it's not a trilogy.
One last note about Keen 6. At the moment, there is no legal way to obtain the game - it was a retail game by FormGen that Apogee merely resold the title. As FormGen doesn't exist anymore, the game has been discontinued, and for now, there is no legal way to obtain Keen 6 (save for the 3 level demo which was created to promote Keen 6)."
I'm fortunate enough to have a copy (including the box!), but it's in 5 1/4 disk format and basically an item of nostalgia sitting on a shelf.

Re:Linus too Harsh
You remember somewhat wrong. Duke Nukem 3D was relased in '96. 3D Realms quotes the date to be January 29th. And 91 is a probably bit early for 486dx -100 to.
-
Explanation why duke nukem forever is so late
From The DNF product page:
"Job: Project Leader / Sh!t Filter (tm)
Spends all his available time (when not playing EverQuest) trying to decide what the team should focus on and accomplish next."
There you go, EverQuest is to blame. -
Re:Let me clarify
4. MORE years pass. Apogee is eventually bought out by 3D Realms, makers of (among other things) Duke Nukem, which is another "Doom Clone".
Uhh... 3D Realms is merely a division of Apogee...
At the bottom of 3drealms.com:

Not according to 3D Realms...
Link: "It's funny that our news piece a few days ago said "We're still here" when some game magazines think we're be dead. That's what it appears we are to Computer Gaming World. They have a monthly section in their magazine called "Pipeline" where they talk about their "educated guesses" on game release dates. As everyone knows (or should know) by now, the release date for Duke Nukem Forever is "When it's done".
Last month we were labeled "Never", and now we're labeled "RIP" by the article's author Rich Laporte. Be curious to see what Rich has to say when DNF is released (When it's done, of course). [Wink]"
-
The most vapourous of the vapourware...
The crown has to go to either Team Fortress 2 or Duke Nukem Forever. TF2 was being developed as far back as 1998! As for Duke Nukem Forever... hell, I remember when they were using the Quake 2 engine!

Duke Nukem
The Brits has bought Duke Nukem's digital DNA from 3D Realms. "We needed people who could protect our women from the aliens. Therefore we'll clone a bunch of human embryos with Duke's digital DNA, and get us some superhumans." said the British Defense Secretary, Geoff Hoon.
Now you all know that 3D Realms has been marketing Duke Nukem's DNA instead of working on Duke Nukem Forever... Well, it's coming "When it's done"... *yawn* -

Re:Non-threaded programs
Also, you claim this Half-Life (never heard of it) was more popular than Quake? I doubt that. You'd see it in stores or see it mentioned on Usenet if it was.
Where do you *live*?
Half-Life has been the foundation for the most popular FPS (unless UT took it away for a bit) for years. The original Half-Life was perhaps the first popular FPS to have a decent story (ignoring, of course, the elderly and much-revered Marathon (I challenge *anyone* to find a game that has developed a fan base as fanatical as the one that has developed the site at the other end of this link -- look at the "Facts and Puzzling things about..." sections)). Half-Life vastly changed the face of the FPS industry, and brought in much more scripting and plot work to FPSes, leading to impressive newer games like Max Payne.
Half-Life spawned two short sequels from Valve (Opposing Forces and Blue Shift). It is the game that the phenomonally popular Counterstrike mod was made for.
Half-Life is also notable for its very quick software renderer, its introduction of the newer "multiple weapons per slot" weapon inventory system, and popularizing manually-triggerable reloading. -
Commander KeenDon't forget the pong game on Commander Keen's wristwatch. I can't say I played it much while I was trying to rescue the babysitter, but it definitely impressed me at the time.
